Simulations of Galactic Cosmic Ray Impacts on the Herschel/PACS bolometer Arrays with Geant4 Code
Abstract: The effects of the in-flight behaviour of the bolometer arrays of the Herschel/PACS instrument under impacts of Galactic cosmic rays are explored. This instrument is part of the ESA-Herschel payload, which will be launched at the end of 2008 and will operate at the Lagrangian L2 point of the Sun-Earth system. We find that the components external to the detectors (the spacecraft, the cryostat, th… ▽ More

Gleam: the GLAST Large Area Telescope Simulation Framework
Abstract: This paper presents the simulation of the GLAST high energy gamma-ray telescope. The simulation package, written in C++, is based on the Geant4 toolkit, and it is integrated into a general framework used to process events. A detailed simulation of the electronic signals inside Silicon detectors has been provided and it is used for the particle tracking, which is handled by a dedicated software.… ▽ More

The Use of HepRep in GLAST
Abstract: HepRep is a generic, hierarchical format for description of graphics representables that can be augmented by physics information and relational properties. It was developed for high energy physics event display applications and is especially suited to client/server or component frameworks. The GLAST experiment, an international effort led by NASA for a gamma-ray telescope to launch in 2006, chos… ▽ More

The FRED Event Display: an Extensible HepRep Client for GLAST
Abstract: A new graphics client prototype for the HepRep protocol is presented. Based on modern toolkits and high level languages (C++ and Ruby), Fred is an experiment to test applicability of scripting facilities to the high energy physics event display domain. Its flexible structure, extensibility and the use of the HepRep protocol are key features for its use in the astroparticle experiment GLAST.

XML for Detector Description at GLAST
Abstract: The problem of representing a detector in a form which is accessible to a variety of applications, allows retrieval of information in ways which are natural to those applications, and is maintainable has been vexing physicists for some time. Although invented to address an entirely different problem domain, the document markup meta-language XML is well-suited to detector description. This paper… ▽ More

Quantum Coordinates of an Event in Local Quantum Physics
Abstract: Recently it has been proposed, using the formalism of positive-operator-valued measures, a possible definition of quantum coordinates for events in the context of quantum mechanics. In this short note we analyze this definition from the point of view of local algebras in the framework of local quantum theories.

Positive-Operator-Valued Time Observable in Quantum Mechanics
Abstract: We examine the longstanding problem of introducing a time observable in Quantum Mechanics; using the formalism of positive-operator-valued measures we show how to define such an observable in a natural way and we discuss some consequences.
