Interaction between electron and acoustic phonon in an in-plane magnetic field induced gapped quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit interaction is studied. We calculate acoustic phonon limited resistivity ($ρ$) and phonon-drag thermopower ($S_g$) due to two well known mechanisms of electron-phonon interaction namely, deformation potential (DP) and piezoelectric (PE) scattering. In the so called Bloch-Gruneisen temperature limit both $ρ$ and $S_g$ depend on temperature ($T$) in a power law fashion i.e. $ρ$ or $S_g\sim T^{ν_T}$. For resistivity, $ν_T$ takes the value $5$ and $3$ due to DP and PE scattering respectively. On the other hand, $ν_T$ is $4$ and $2$ due to DP and PE scattering, respectively for phonon-drag thermopower. Additionally, we find numerically that $ν_T$ depends on Rashba parameter ($α$) and electron density ($n$). The dependence of $ν_T$ on $α$ becomes more prominent at lower density. We also study the variations of $ρ$ and $S_g$ with carrier density in the Bloch-Gruneisen regime. Through a numerical analysis a similar power law dependence $ρ$ or $S_g\sim n^{-ν_n}$ is established in which the effective exponent $ν_n$ undergoes a smooth transition from a low density behavior to a high density behavior. At a higher density regime, $ν_n$ matches excellently with the value obtained from theoretical arguments. Approximate analytical expressions for both resistivity and phonon-drag thermopower in the Bloch-Gruneisen regime are given.

We delve into spin Hall effect in generic spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional fermionic systems. We derive analytically the spin-orbit force responsible for the spin Hall effect, and find that it has `Lorentz force'-like form. We also derive the pseudo magnetic field responsible for this force. We establish the relation between the spin Hall conductivity, flux quanta and this pseudo magnetic field, similar to the one between charge Hall conductivity, flux quanta and the external field. We also present an exact closed-form expression of the spin Hall conductivity in a generic spin-orbit coupled system. Depending on the dimensionality of the spin-orbit interactions, the spin Hall conductivity depends on different combinations of Rashba parameter and fermion density.

High-spin states in the doubly-odd $^{198}$Bi nucleus have been studied by using the $^{185,187}$Re($^{16}$O, xn) reactions at the beam energy of 112.5 MeV. $γ-γ$ coincidence were measured by using the INGA array with 15 Compton suppressed clover HPGe detectors. The observed levels have been assigned definite spin-parity. The high spin structure is grouped into three bands (B1, B2 and B3), of which two (B1 and B2) exhibit the properties of magnetic rotation (MR). Tilted axis cranking calculations were carried out to explain the MR bands having large multi-quasiparticle configurations. The calculated results explain the bands B1 and B2 very nicely, confirming the shears mechanism and suggest a crossing of two MR bands in both the cases. The crossing is from 6-qp to 8-qp in band B1 and from 4-qp to 6-qp in band B2, a very rare finding. A semiclassical model has also been used to obtain the particle-hole interaction strengths for the bands B1 and B2, below the band crossing.

The spin-orbit interaction in heavy hole gas formed at $p$-doped semiconductor heterojunctions and electron gas at {\mbox SrTiO}${}_3$ surfaces is cubic in momentum. Here we report magnetotransport properties of k-cubic Rashba spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional fermionic systems. We study longitudinal (Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations) and Hall component of the resistivity tensor analytically as well as numerically. The longitudinal resistivity shows beating pattern due to different SdH oscillation frequencies $ f_{\pm} $ for spin-up and spin-down fermions. We propose empirical forms of $ f_{\pm} $ as exact expressions are not available, which are being used to find location of the beating nodes. The beating nodes and the number of oscillations between any two successive nodes obtained from exact numerical results are in excellent agreement with those calculated from the proposed empirical form. In the Hall resistivity, an additional Hall plateau appears in between two conventional ones as spin-orbit coupling constant increases. The width of this additional plateau increases with spin-orbit coupling constant.

The combined effect of spin-orbit coupling and perpendicular electric field manifests through formation of regular beating pattern in Weiss and SdH oscillations. Analytical results, in addition to the numerical results, of the beating pattern formation are provided. The analytical results yield a beating condition which will be useful to determine the spin-orbit coupling constant by simply counting the number of oscillation between any two successive nodes. Moreover, the numerical results of modulation effect on collisional and Hall conductivities are presented.

We study the dynamics of electrons in monolayer Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS$_2$), in the absence as well as presence of a transverse magnetic field. Considering the initial electronic wave function to be a Gaussian wave packet, we calculate the time dependent expectation value of position and velocity operators. In the absence of the magnetic field, the time dependent average values of position and velocity show damped oscillations dependent on the width of the wave packet. In the presence of a transverse magnetic field, the wave packet amplitude shows oscillatory behaviour over short timescales associated with classical cyclotron orbit, followed by the phenomena of spontaneous collapse and revival over larger timescales. We relate the timescales of these effects and our results can be useful for the interpretation of experiments with trapped ions.

In this work we study wave packet dynamics and $zitterbewegung$, an oscillatory quantum motion, of heavy holes in III-V semiconductor quantum wells in presence of a quantizing magnetic field. It is revealed that a Gaussian wave-packet describing a heavy hole diffuses asymmetrically along the circular orbit while performing cyclotron motion. The wave packet splits into two peaks with unequal amplitudes after a certain time depending on spin-orbit coupling constant. This unequal splitting of the wave packet is attributed to the cubic Rashba interaction for heavy holes. The difference in the peak amplitudes disappears with time. At a certain time the two peaks diffuse almost along the entire cyclotron orbit. Then tail and head of the diffused wave packet interfere and as a result a completely randomized pattern of the wave packet is observed. The diffusion rate of the wave packet increases with increase of the spin-orbit interaction strength. Also strong spin-orbit coupling expedite the splitting and the randomization of the wave packet. We also study the $zitterbewegung$ in various physical observables such as position, charge current and spin angular momentum of the heavy hole. The $zitterbewegung$ oscillations are very much sensitive to the initial wave vector of the Gaussian wave packet and the strength of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

Thermoelectric coefficients of an ultra-thin topological insulator are presented here. The hybridization between top and bottom surface states of a topological insulator plays a significant role. In absence of magnetic field, thermopower increases and thermal conductivity decreases with increase of the hybridization energy. In presence of magnetic field perpendicular to the ultra-thin topological insulator, thermoelectric coefficients exhibit quantum oscillations with inverse magnetic field, whose frequency is strongly modified by the Zeeman energy and phase factor is governed by the product of the Lande g-factor and the hybridization energy. In addition to the numerical results, the low-temperature approximate analytical results of the thermoelectric coefficients are also provided. It is also observed that for a given magnetic field these transport coefficients oscillate with hybridization energy, whose frequency depends on the Lande g-factor.

It is observed that the peaks in the phonon-drag thermopower split into two when the Rashba spin-orbit coupling constant is strong. This splitting is a direct consequence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We show the dependence of phonon-drag thermopower on both magnetic field and temperature numerically. A power-law dependence of phonon-drag magnetothermopower on the temperature in the Bloch-Gruneisen regime is found. We also extract the exponent of the temperature dependence of phonon-drag thermopower for different parameters like electron density, magnetic field, and the spin-orbit coupling constant.

The effect of in-plane electric field on Landau level spacing, spin splitting energy, average spin polarization and average spin current in the bulk as well as at the edges of a two-dimensional electron system with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are presented here. The spin splitting energy for a particular magnetic field is found to be reduced by the external in-plane electric field. Unlike the case of a two-dimensional electron system without Rashba spin-orbit interaction, here the Landau level spacing is electric field dependent. This dependency becomes stronger at the edges in comparison to the bulk. The average spin polarization vector rotates anti-clockwise with the increase of electric field. The average spin current also gets influenced significantly by the application of the in-plane electric field.

We report final-state-exclusive measurements of the light charged fragments in coincidence with 26Ne residual nuclei following the direct two-proton removal from a neutron-rich 28Mg secondary beam. A Dalitz-plot analysis and comparisons with simulations show that a majority of the triple- coincidence events with two protons display phase-space correlations consistent with the (two-body) kinematics of a spatially-correlated pair-removal mechanism. The fraction of such correlated events, 56(12) %, is consistent with the fraction of the calculated cross section, 64 %, arising from spin S = 0 two-proton configurations in the entrance-channel (shell-model) 28Mg ground state wave function. This result promises access to an additional and more specific probe of the spin and spatial correlations of valence nucleon pairs in exotic nuclei produced as fast secondary beams.

The two-proton removal reaction from 28Mg projectiles has been studied at 93 MeV/u at the NSCL. First coincidence measurements of the heavy 26Ne projectile residues, the removed protons and other light charged particles enabled the relative cross sections from each of the three possible elastic and inelastic proton removal mechanisms to be determined. These more final-state-exclusive measurements are key for further interrogation of these reaction mechanisms and use of the reaction channel for quantitative spectroscopy of very neutron-rich nuclei. The relative and absolute yields of the three contributing mechanisms are compared to reaction model expectations - based on the use of eikonal dynamics and sd-shell-model structure amplitudes.

Thermoelectric coefficients of a two dimensional electron gas with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction are presented here. In absence of magnetic field, thermoelectric coefficients are enhanced due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. In presence of magnetic field, the thermoelectric coefficients of spin-up and spin-down electrons oscillate with different frequency and produces beating patterns in the components of the total thermoelectric power and the total thermal conductivity. We also provide analytical expressions of the thermoelectric coefficients to explain the beating pattern formation. We obtain a simple relation which determines the Rashba SOI strength if the magnetic fields corresponding to any two successive beat nodes are known from the experiment.

We study the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the zitterbewegung (ZB) of electrons in a semiconductor quantum well (QW) and in a quantum dot (QD) with the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. We obtain a general expression of the time-evolution of the position vector and current of the electron in a semiconductor quantum well. The amplitude of the oscillatory motion is directly related to the Berry connection in momentum space. We find that in presence of the magnetic field the ZB in a quantum well does not vanish when the strengths of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions are equal. The in-plane magnetic field helps to sustain the ZB in quantum wells even at low value of $k_0 d$ (where $d$ is the width of the Gaussian wavepacket and $k_0$ is the initial wave vector). The trembling motion of an electron in a semiconductor quantum well with high Lande g-factor (e.g. InSb) sustains over a long time, even at low value of $k_0 d$. Further, we study the ZB of an electron in quantum dots within the two sub-band model numerically. The trembling motion persists in time even when the magnetic field is absent as well as when the strengths of the SOI are equal. The ZB in quantum dots is due to the superposition of oscillatory motions corresponding to all possible differences of the energy eigenvalues of the system. This is an another example of multi-frequency ZB phenomenon.

We consider a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We derive analytical expressions of the density of states (DOS) of a 2DEG with the Rashba SOI in presence of magnetic field by using the Green's function technique. The DOS allows us to obtain the analytical expressions of the magnetoconductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons. The conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons oscillate with different frequencies and gives rise to the beating patterns in the amplitude of the Shubnikov de Hass (SdH) oscillations. We find a simple equation which determines the zero-field spin splitting energy if the magnetic field corresponding to any beat node is known from the experiment. Our analytical results reproduce well the experimentally observed non-periodic beating patterns, number of oscillations between two successive nodes and the measured zero-field spin splitting energy.

The present article discusses magnetic confinement of the Dirac excitations in graphene in presence of inhomogeneous magnetic fields. In the first case a magnetic field directed along the z axis whose magnitude is proportional to $1/r$ is chosen. In the next case we choose a more realistic magnetic field which does not blow up at the origin and gradually fades away from the origin. The magnetic fields chosen do not have any finite/infinite discontinuity for finite values of the radial coordinate. The novelty of the two magnetic fields is related to the equations which are used to find the excited spectra of the excitations. It turns out that the bound state solutions of the two-dimensional hydrogen atom problem are related to the spectra of graphene excitations in presence of the $1/r$ (inverse-radial) magnetic field. For the other magnetic field profile one can use the knowledge of the bound state spectrum of a two-dimensional cut-off Coulomb potential to dictate the excitation spectra of the states of graphene. The spectrum of the graphene excitations in presence of the inverse-radial magnetic field can be exactly solved while the other case cannot be. In the later case we give the localized solutions of the zero-energy states in graphene.

The effect of magnetic modulation on thermodynamic properties of a graphene monolayer in presence of a constant perpendicular magnetic field is reported here. One-dimensional spatial electric or magnetic modulation lifts the degeneracy of the Landau levels and converts into bands and their band width oscillates with magnetic field leading to Weiss-type oscillation in the thermodynamic properties. The effect of magnetic modulation on thermodynamic properties of a graphene sheet is studied and then compared with electrically modulated graphene and magnetically modulated conventional two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). We observe Weiss-type and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations at low and high magnetic field, respectively. There is a definite phase difference in Weiss-type oscillations in thermodynamic quantities of magnetically modulated graphene in compare to electrically modulated graphene. On the other hand, the phase remains same and amplitude of the oscillation is large when compared with the magnetically modulated 2DEG. Explicit asymptotic expressions of density of states and the Helmholtz free energy are provided to understand the phase and amplitude of the Weiss-type oscillations qualitatively. We also study thermodynamic properties when both electric and magnetic modulations are present. The Weiss-type oscillations still exist when the modulations are out-of-phase.

The conductivities for spin-up and spin-down electrons oscillate with different frequencies and produce beating patterns in the amplitude of the Weiss and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. We show that the Rashba strength can be determined by analyzing the beating pattern in the Weiss oscillation. We find a simple equation which determines the Rashba spin-orbit interaction strength if the number of Weiss oscillations between any two successive nodes is known from the experiment. We compare our results with the electrically modulated 2DEG with the Rashba interaction. For completeness, we also study the beating pattern formation in the collisional and the Hall conductivities.

The interactions of a E/A=70-MeV 9C beam with a Be target was used to populate levels in Be, B, and C isotopes which undergo decay into many-particle exit channels. The decay products were detected in the HiRA array and the level energies were identified from their invariant mass. Correlations between the decay products were examined to deduce the nature of the decays, specifically to what extent all the fragments were created in one prompt step or whether the disintegration proceeded in a sequential fashion through long-lived intermediate states. In the latter case, information on the spin of the level was also obtained. Of particular interest is the 5-body decay of the 8C ground state which was found to disintegrate in two steps of two-proton decay passing through the 6Beg.s. intermediate state. The isobaric analog of 8Cg.s. in 8B was also found to undergo two-proton decay to the isobaric analog of 6Beg.s. in 6Li. A 9.69-MeV state in 10C was found to undergo prompt 4-body decay to the 2p+2alpha exit channel. The two protons were found to have a strong enhancementin the diproton region and the relative energies of all four p-alpha pairs were consistent with the 5Lig.s. resonance.

In addition to the dominant Dyakonov-Perel (DP) mechanism for spin control and relaxation, we consider magnetic interaction between electrons which assumes importance due to high electronic Lande g-factor in the material. It is found that while the effect of magnetic interaction is not important at low densities, it reduces the spin relaxation length by as much as 50% at higher densities. We also present a calculation which elucidates the suppression of decoherence attributed to wave vector dependent magnetic field in the DP relaxation mechanism. We note that magnetic interaction is a general relaxation mechanism which may assume importance in materials with high electronic Lande g-factor.

Bragg spectroscopy can be used to probe the multibranch nature of the low energy bosonic excitations by measuring dynamic structure factor. Therefore, we calculate dynamic structure factor in those three different regimes. In the Bragg spectroscopy, an actual observable is momentum imparted to the superfluid due to the Bragg potential. Abstract:
A critical re-analysis of the experimental data to reject transfer fission component did not change the fragment mass widths and hence the conclusion regarding abrupt rise in mass widths with decreasing energy around Coulomb barrier remains unchanged

Microscopic effects in fragment mass distributions in fusion-fission reactions of light projectiles (C, O and F) on deformed thorium and spherical bismuth targets in near and below Coulomb barrier energies are investigated. Precisely measured mass distribution shows a sudden anomalous increase in variances of mass distributions ($σ_{m}^2$) near Coulomb barrier energies for all three projectiles with deformed thorium target, in contrast to a smooth variation of $σ_{m}^2$ with energy for spherical bismuth target. Macroscopic effects of change in mass flow or prolonged mass equilibration time can not explain the observed variation in $σ_{m}^2$ with energy. Microscopic effects due to change in entrance channel shape compactness for projectiles hitting the polar region of prolate thorium target is postulated to reach a almost symmetric saddle without complete fusion for events of anomalous fragment widths. Quantitative estimates of mass widths mixed for the two processes explains the observed variation of $σ_{m}^2$ with excitation energy.

We analyze experimental observation of stripes formation of a phase fluctuating Bose-Einstein condensates in a highly elongated 3D traps [Dettmer {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. We also predict that the stripes are present in quasi-1D Bose gas in the mean-field as well as in the hard-core bosons regimes. These stripes can be realized by measuring the axial two-point correlation functions by using the Bragg interferometric method which is similar to the original Hanbury Brown and Twiss experimental setup.

Steinhauer {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 90}, 060404 (2003)] where short wavelength axial phonons with different number of radial modes have been observed. We provide values of the momentum, energy and time duration of the two-photon Bragg pulse and also the two-body interaction strength which are needed in the Bragg scattering experiments in order to observe the long wavelength discrete axial modes. These discrete axial modes can be observed when the system is dilute and the time duration of the Bragg pulse is long enough.

We present a quantized hydrodynamic theory and its applications of one-dimensional hard-core bosons in a harmonic trap. Quantizing the Hamiltonian of a trapped hard-core bosons and diagonalize it in terms of the phase and density fluctuations associated with the Bose field operator. As an applications, we calculate discrete energy spectrum, dynamic structure factor, momentum transferred by a two-photon Bragg pulse, single-particle density matrix, momentum distribution, and two-particle correlation function. The dynamic structure factor has multiple peaks due to the discrete nature of the energy spectrum which can be observed by a two-photon Bragg pulse with long duration. The coherence length at zero temperature is very small due to the "fermionization" of the system. We also compute the momentum distributions which has oscillatory behavior at large momentum. The pair distribution function shows that there are many deep valleys at various relative separations which implies shell structure due to the Pauli blocking in real space.

Motivated by the MIT experiment [Gorlitz {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 130402 (2001)], we analytically study the effect of density and phase fluctuations on various observables in a quasi one-dimensional degenerate Bose gases. Quantizing the Gross-Pitaevskii Hamiltonian and diagonalize it in terms of the normal modes associated with the density and phase fluctuations of a quasi-one dimensional Bose gas. We calculate dynamic structure factor $S(q,ω)$ from low-energy condensate density fluctuations and find that there are multiple peaks in $S(q,ω)$ for a given momentum $q$ due to the discrete energy spectrum. These multiple peaks can be resolved by a two-photon Bragg pulse with a long duration which transfer the momentum to the system. We calculate the momentum transferred $ P_z(t)$ by using the phase-density representation of the Bose order parameter. We also calculate the single-particle density matrix, phase coherence length, and momentum distribution by taking care of the phase fluctuations upto fourth-order term as well as the density fluctuations. Our studies on coherence properties shows that 1D Bose gases of MIT experiment do not form a true condensate, but it can be obtained by a moderate changes of the current experimental parameters.

By adjusting the amplitude of the laser potential, one can make quadratic-plus-quartic potential, purely quartic potential, and quartic-minus-quadratic potential. We show that an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic-plus-gaussian laser trap breaks the rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian when rotational frequency is greater than one-half of the lowest energy surface mode frequency. We also show that by increasing the amplitude of the gaussian laser trap, a vortex appears in a slowly rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. Moreover, one can also create a vortex in non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate confined in harmonic-plus-gaussian laser potential.

We study rotational motion of an interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a quadratic-plus-quartic potential. We calculate the lowest energy surface mode frequency and show that a symmetric trapped (harmonic and quartic) Bose-Einstein condensate breaks the rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian when rotational frequency is greater than one-half of the lowest energy surface mode frequency. We argue that the formation of a vortex is not possible in a non-interacting as well as in an attractive Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic trap due to the absence of the spontaneous shape deformation, but it can occur which leads to the vortex formation if we add an additional quartic potential. Moreover, the spontaneous shape deformation and consequently the formation of a vortex in an attractive system depends on the strengths of the two-body interaction and the quartic potential.
