Structural columns are the crucial load-carrying components of buildings and bridges. Early detection of column damage is important for the assessment of the residual performance and the prevention of system-level collapse. This research proposes an innovative end-to-end micro aerial vehicles (MAVs)-based approach to automatically scan and inspect columns. First, an MAV-based automatic image collection method is proposed. The MAV is programmed to sense the structural columns and their surrounding environment. During the navigation, the MAV first detects and approaches the structural columns. Then, it starts to collect image data at multiple viewpoints around every detected column. Second, the collected images will be used to assess the damage types and damage locations. Third, the damage state of the structural column will be determined by fusing the evaluation outcomes from multiple camera views. In this study, reinforced concrete (RC) columns are selected to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. Experimental results indicate that the proposed MAV-based inspection approach can effectively collect images from multiple viewing angles, and accurately assess critical RC column damages. The approach improves the level of autonomy during the inspection. In addition, the evaluation outcomes are more comprehensive than the existing 2D vision methods. The concept of the proposed inspection approach can be extended to other structural columns such as bridge piers.

Measurements of the ac response represent a widely-used method for probing the properties of superconductors. In the surface superconducting state (SSS), increase of the current beyond the surface critical current $I_c$ leads to breakdown of SSS and penetration of external magnetic field into the sample bulk. An interesting free-of-bulk system in SSS is offered by thin-walled superconducting cylinders. The critical state model (CSM) asserts the ac susceptibility $χ$ to exhibit jumps as a function of the external ac field amplitude $H_{ac}$, because of the periodic destruction and restoration of SSS in the cylinder wall. Here, we investigate experimentally the low-frequency (128-8192\,Hz) ac response of thin-walled superconducting cylinders in superimposed dc and ac magnetic fields applied parallel to the cylinder axis. Distinct from the CSM predictions, experiments reveal that $χ$ is a smooth function of $H_{ac}$. For the explanation of our observations we propose a phenomenological model of partial penetration of magnetic flux (PPMF). The PPMF model implies that after a restoration of the superconducting state, the magnetic fields inside and outside the cylinder are not equal, and the value of the penetrating flux is random for each penetration. This model fits very well to the experimental data on the temperature dependence of the first-harmonic $χ_1$ at any $H_{ac}$ and dc field magnitude. However, in a certain temperature range the values of physical parameters deduced within the framework of the PPMF model are questionable.

The dynamics of magnetic field penetration into thin-walled superconducting niobium cylinders is experimentally investigated. It is shown that magnetic field penetrates through the wall of a cylinder in a series of giant jumps with amplitude 10 - 20 Oe and duration of a few $μ$s. The jumps take place when the total current in the wall, not the current density, exceeds some critical value. In addition there are small jumps and/or smooth penetration, and their contribution can reach 20% of the total penetrating flux. It is demonstrated that the magnetic field inside the cylinder exhibits several oscillations. The number of giant jumps reduces with temperature.

dc and ac magnetic properties of two thin-walled superconducting Nb cylinders with a rectangular cross-section are reported. Magnetization curves and the ac response were studied on as-prepared and patterned samples in magnetic fields parallel to the cylinder axis. A row of micron-sized antidots (holes) was made in the film along the cylinder axis. Avalanche-like jumps of the magnetization are observed for both samples at low temperatures for magnetic fields not only above $H_{c1}$, but in fields lower than $H_{c1}$ in the vortex-free region. The positions of the jumps are not reproducible and they change from one experiment to another, resembling vortex lattice instabilities usually observed for magnetic fields larger than $H_{c1}$. At temperatures above $0.66T_c$ and $0.78T_c$ the magnetization curves become smooth for the patterned and the as-prepared samples, respectively. The magnetization curve of a reference planar Nb film in the parallel field geometry does not exhibit jumps in the entire range of accessible temperatures. The ac response was measured in constant and swept dc magnetic field modes. Experiment shows that ac losses at low magnetic fields in a swept field mode are smaller for the patterned sample. For both samples the shapes of the field dependences of losses and the amplitude of the third harmonic are the same in constant and swept field near $H_{c3}$. This similarity does not exist at low fields in a swept mode.

We investigate the complex conductivity of a highly disordered MoC superconducting film with $k_Fl\approx 1$, where $k_F$ is the Fermi wavenumber and $l$ is the mean free path, derived from experimental transmission characteristics of coplanar waveguide resonators in a wide temperature range below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. We find that the original Mattis-Bardeen model with a finite quasiparticle lifetime, $τ$, offers a perfect description of the experimentally observed complex conductivity. We show that $τ$ is appreciably reduced by scattering effects. Characteristics of the scattering centers are independently found by the scanning tunneling spectroscopy and agree with those determined from the complex conductivity.

We report the results of the measurement the ac conductivity of a Nb superconducting thin film in a swept dc magnetic field. In the mixed state the swept dc field creates vortices at the film surface which pass through the film and form the observed ac conductivity. Vortex rate generation does not depend on the value of the dc field and there is a large plateau-like region of dc magnetic fields where the dissipation is approximately constant. A proposed phenomenological model describes quite well the main features of the ac response in these fields including its dependency on the sweep rate, ac amplitude, frequency, and value of the second and third harmonics.

We have studied temperature and field dependencies of the critical current $I_{C}$ in the Nb-Fe$_{0.1}$Si$_{0.9}$-Nb Josephson junction with tunneling barrier formed by paramagnetic insulator. We demonstrate that in these junctions the co-existence of both the 0 and the $π$ states within one tunnel junction takes place which leads to the appearance of a sharp cusp in the temperature dependence $I_{C}(T)$ similar to the $I_{C}(T)$ cusp found for the $0-π$ transition in metallic $π$ junctions. This cusp is not related to the $0-π$ temperature induced transition itself, but is caused by the different temperature dependencies of the opposing 0 and $π$ supercurrents through the barrier.

Electrical properties of Josephson junctions Nb/FeSi/Nb with superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F)interfaces are presented. Due to Andreev reflection the nearly exact quadruple enhancement of the tunnel junction differential conductance compared with that of the normal state was achieved. The transparency of the S/F interfaces in our junctions was estimated to be close to unity. This almost ideal value is obtained due to the use of a very smooth amorphous magnetic FeSi alloy for the barrier preparation. The real structure of the Nb/FeSi/Nb tunnel junction is described as a S/F/I/F/S junction. Also Nb/FeSi/Si/Nb Josephson junctions were investigated and the results found on these junctions confirm the effects observed in Nb/FeSi/Nb.

A sensitive measurement of temperature dependence of microwave losses shows a presence of intergranular weak links close the superconducting transition only. The MgB2 films obtained, about 200 nm thick, exhibit a maximum zero resistance critical temperature of 36 K and critical current density of 3x10^7 A/cm^2 at 13.2 K

Temperature dependence of far-infrared transmission of NbN thin films deposited on MgO and Si substrates was measured at several frequencies from 0.4 up to 4.3 THz. Exponential increase of relative penetration depth at low temperatures and a peak in transmission near Tc was observed for frequencies below the optical gap. On the contrary, transmission measured at frequencies above the gap exhibits only flat, almost linear temperature dependence. This behavior is consistent with the BCS theory of superconductivity. Similar measurements were performed also on YBaCuO thin films deposited on MgO and sapphire substrates. Low-temperature variation of transmission is linear or constant and the peak below Tc predicted by the BCS theory is not observed. Flat temperature dependence at higher frequencies indicates that the photon energy was sufficient for excitation over the optical gap. The s-wave BCS theory is adequate for NbN films but not for the YBCO materials.

Thin films of MgB2 superconductor were prepared by three different procedures on sapphire and silicon substrates. Boron thin films, ex-situ annealed in magnesium vapour, resulted in textured polycrystalline films with crystal dimensions below about 1000 nm, onset critical temperature Tcon near 39 K and width of phase transition about 1 K. Both, ex-situ and in-situ annealed co-deposited boron and magnesium thin films on sapphire and silicon substrates give smooth nanocrystalline films. DC properties of nanocrystalline MgB2 films co-deposited on silicon substrate reached Tcon = 33 K and zero resistance Tco = 27 K, the highest values received until now on Si substrates. In addition, microwave analyses prove the existence of superconducting parts of the film below 39 K. This result confirms the possibility to synthesise nanocrystalline superconducting MgB2 thin films on silicon substrate with critical temperature near 39 K, prepared by vacuum co-deposition of boron and magnesium films.
