Abstract:
Effects of Single Event Upsets (SEU) and Single Event Transients (SET) are studied in the FE-I4B chip of the innermost layer of the ATLAS pixel system. SEU/SET affect the FE-I4B Global Registers as well as the settings for the individual pixels, causing, among other things, occupancy losses, drops in the low voltage currents, noisy pixels, and silent pixels. Quantitative data analysis and simulations indicate that SET dominate over SEU on the load line of the memory. Operational issues and mitigation techniques are presented.

A two-dimensional electrostatic model of interdigitated comb drive in longitudinal mode
Authors:

Abstract:
A periodic homogenization model of the electrostatic equation is constructed for a comb drive with a large number of fingers and whose mode of operation is in-plane and longitudinal. The model is obtained in the case where the distance between the rotor and the stator is of an order $\varepsilon ^{α}$, $α\geq 2$, where $\varepsilon$ denotes the period of distribution of the fingers. The model derivation uses the two-scale convergence technique.\ Strong convergences are also established. This allows us to find, after a proper scaling, the limit of the electrostatic force applied to the rotor in the longitudinal direction.

During the shutdown of the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2013-2014, an additional pixel layer was installed between the existing Pixel detector of the ATLAS experiment and a new, smaller radius beam pipe. The motivation for this new pixel layer, the Insertable B-Layer (IBL), was to maintain or improve the robustness and performance of the ATLAS tracking system, given the higher instantaneous and integrated luminosities realised following the shutdown. Because of the extreme radiation and collision rate environment, several new radiation-tolerant sensor and electronic technologies were utilised for this layer. This paper reports on the IBL construction and integration prior to its operation in the ATLAS detector.

Abstract:
We report on the 3-year INFN ATLAS-CMS joint research activity in collaboration with FBK, started in 2014, and aimed at the development of new thin pixel detectors for the High Luminosity LHC Phase-2 upgrades. The program is concerned with both 3D and planar active-edge pixel sensors to be made on 6-inch p-type wafers. The technology and the design will be optimized and qualified for extreme radia…

The technology and the design will be optimized and qualified for extreme radiation hardness (2e16 neq cm-2). Pixel layouts compatible with present (for testing) and future (RD53 65nm) front-end chips of ATLAS and CMS are considered. The paper covers the main aspects of the research program, from the sensor design and fabrication technology, to the results of initial tests performed on the first prototypes.

In this paper, starting from the classical 3D non-convex and nonlocal micromagnetic energy for ferromagnetic materials, we determine, via an asymptotic analysis, the free energy of a multi-structure consisting of a nano-wire in junction with a thin film and of a multi-structure consisting of two joined nano-wires. We assume that the volumes of the two parts composing each multi-structure vanish with same rate. In the first case, we obtain a 1D limit problem on the nano-wire and a 2D limit problem on the thin film, and the two limit problems are uncoupled. In the second case, we obtain two 1D limit problems coupled by a junction condition on the magnetization. In both cases, the limit problem remains non-convex, but now it becomes completely local.

Asymptotic Analysis of the Eigenvalues of a Laplacian Problem in a Thin Multidomain
Authors:

Abstract:
We consider a thin multidomain of $R^N$, N>1, consisting of two vertical cylinders, one placed upon the other: the first one with given height and small cross section, the second one with small thickness and given cross section. In this multidomain we study the asymptotic behavior, when the volumes of the two cylinders vanish, of a Laplacian eigenvalue problem and of a $L^2$-Hilbert orthonormal…

We consider a thin multidomain of $R^N$, N>1, consisting of two vertical cylinders, one placed upon the other: the first one with given height and small cross section, the second one with small thickness and given cross section. In this multidomain we study the asymptotic behavior, when the volumes of the two cylinders vanish, of a Laplacian eigenvalue problem and of a $L^2$-Hilbert orthonormal basis of eigenvectors. We derive the limit eigenvalue problem (which is well posed in the union of the limit domains, with respective dimension 1 and N-1) and the limit basis. We discuss the limit models and we precise how these limits depend on the dimension N and on limit of the ratio between the volumes of the two cylinders.

Abstract:
We consider the linearized elasticity system in a multidomain of the three dimensional space. This multidomain is the union of a horizontal plate, with fixed cross section and small thickness "h", and of a vertical beam with fixed height and small cross section of radius "r". The lateral boundary of the plate and the top of the beam are assumed to be clamped. When "h" and "r" tend to zero simult…

When "h" and "r" tend to zero simultaneously, with "r" much greater than the square of "h", we identify the limit problem. This limit problem involves six junction conditions.
