Abstract:
The fractional quantum Hall states are non-Fermi liquids of electrons, in that their ground states and low energy excitations are described not in terms of electrons but in terms of composite fermions which are bound states of electrons and $2p$ quantized vortices. An electron or a hole at filling factor $ν=n/(2pn+1)$, where $p,n$ are integers, is a complex molecule of $2pn+ 1$ quasiparticles (exc…

The fractional quantum Hall states are non-Fermi liquids of electrons, in that their ground states and low energy excitations are described not in terms of electrons but in terms of composite fermions which are bound states of electrons and $2p$ quantized vortices. An electron or a hole at filling factor $ν=n/(2pn+1)$, where $p,n$ are integers, is a complex molecule of $2pn+ 1$ quasiparticles (excited composite fermions) or quasiholes (missing composite fermions) and has its own internal excitations. Recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments have succeeded in measuring the electron spectral functions of these states, which provides valuable information on the nature of these strongly correlated molecules and thereby on the short-distance correlations in the fractional quantum Hall liquids. These experiments exhibit several sharp peaks in the tunneling spectra. Detailed calculations based on the composite-fermion theory demonstrate multiple peaks in the local density of states, and we argue that the separation between the peaks represents interaction-corrected composite-fermion cyclotron energy. We discuss what aspects of experiments are explained by our model and which ones remain to be explained.

The unification of quantum theory and gravity is one of the central open problems in physics. While most of the effort in the literature is focused on the UV modifications of quantum theory due to gravity, in this work, we show that generic infrared (IR) modifications arise when we describe quantum theory in curved space-time. We explicitly demonstrate that the modifications to the position-momentum algebra are proportional to the curvature invariants (like Ricci scalar, Kretschmann scalar). Thus, our results show that infrared effects in quantum systems do not require any extra assumptions. We study particle dynamics in an arbitrary curved spacetime by embedding them in a higher-dimensional flat geometry. Dirac's quantization procedure allows us to completely capture the dynamics of a particle in 4-dimensional curved spacetime through the modified position-momentum algebra. We apply the method to a few spacetimes and show that the corrections due to the space-time curvature are generic. Furthermore, we compare our results with those derived using extended uncertainty principles. Finally, we discuss the implications of our work for black holes and entanglement.

Entity linking (or Normalization) is an essential task in text mining that maps the entity mentions in the medical text to standard entities in a given Knowledge Base (KB). This task is of great importance in the medical domain. It can also be used for merging different medical and clinical ontologies. In this paper, we center around the problem of disease linking or normalization. This task is executed in two phases: candidate generation and candidate scoring. In this paper, we present an approach to rank the candidate Knowledge Base entries based on their similarity with disease mention. We make use of the Triplet Network for candidate ranking. While the existing methods have used carefully generated sieves and external resources for candidate generation, we introduce a robust and portable candidate generation scheme that does not make use of the hand-crafted rules. Experimental results on the standard benchmark NCBI disease dataset demonstrate that our system outperforms the prior methods by a significant margin.

In recent years extracting relevant information from biomedical and clinical texts such as research articles, discharge summaries, or electronic health records have been a subject of many research efforts and shared challenges. Relation extraction is the process of detecting and classifying the semantic relation among entities in a given piece of texts. Existing models for this task in biomedical domain use either manually engineered features or kernel methods to create feature vector. These features are then fed to classifier for the prediction of the correct class. It turns out that the results of these methods are highly dependent on quality of user designed features and also suffer from curse of dimensionality. In this work we focus on extracting relations from clinical discharge summaries. Our main objective is to exploit the power of convolution neural network (CNN) to learn features automatically and thus reduce the dependency on manual feature engineering. We evaluate performance of the proposed model on i2b2-2010 clinical relation extraction challenge dataset. Our results indicate that convolution neural network can be a good model for relation exaction in clinical text without being dependent on expert's knowledge on defining quality features.
