Abstract:
This work provides five explicit constructions of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{e}_8$, based on its semisimple subalgebras of maximal rank. Each of these models is graded by an abelian group, namely, $\mathbb{Z}_4$, $\mathbb{Z}_5$, $\mathbb{Z}_6$, $\mathbb{Z}_3^2$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_4$; the neutral component is direct sum of special linear algebras and the remaining homogen…

Electrons accelerated on Earth by a rich variety of wave scattering or stochastic processes generate hard non-thermal X-ray bremsstrahlung up to >~ 1 MeV and power Earth's various types of aurorae. Although Jupiter's magnetic field is an order of magnitude larger than Earth's, space-based telescopes have previously detected X-rays only up to ~7 keV. On the basis of theoretical models of the Jovian auroral X-ray production, X-ray emission in the ~2-7 keV band has been interpreted as thermal (arising from electrons characterized by a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution) bremsstrahlung. Here we report the observation of hard X-rays in the 8-20 keV band from the Jovian aurorae, obtained with the NuSTAR X-ray observatory. The X-rays fit to a flat power-law model with slope 0.60+/-0.22 - a spectral signature of non-thermal, hard X-ray bremsstrahlung. We determine the electron flux and spectral shape in the keV to MeV energy range using coeval in situ measurements by the Juno spacecraft's JADE and JEDI instruments. Jovian electron spectra of the form we observe have previously been interpreted to arise in stochastic acceleration, rather than coherent acceleration by electric fields. We reproduce the X-ray spectral shape and approximate flux observed by NuSTAR, and explain the non-detection of hard X-rays by Ulysses, by simulating the non-thermal population of electrons undergoing precipitating electron energy loss, secondary electron generation and bremsstrahlung emission in a model Jovian atmosphere. The results highlight the similarities between the processes generating hard X-ray auroras on Earth and Jupiter, which may be occurring on Saturn, too.

Abstract:
We classify 7-dimensional nilpotent Lie groups, decomposable or of nilpotency step at most 4, endowed with left-invariant purely coclosed $G_2$-structures. A Si(Li) detector fabrication procedure has been developed with the aim of satisfying the unique requirements of the GAPS (General Antiparticle Spectrometer) experiment. Si(Li) detectors are particularly well-suited to the GAPS detection scheme, in which several planes of detectors act as the target to slow and capture an incoming antiparticle into an exotic atom, as well as the spectrometer and tracker to measure the resulting decay X-rays and annihilation products. These detectors must provide the absorption depth, energy resolution, tracking efficiency, and active area necessary for this technique, all within the significant temperature, power, and cost constraints of an Antarctic long-duration balloon flight. We report here on the fabrication and performance of prototype 2"-diameter, 1-1.25 mm-thick, single-strip Si(Li) detectors that provide the necessary X-ray energy resolution of $\sim$4 keV for a cost per unit area that is far below that of previously-acquired commercial detectors. This fabrication procedure is currently being optimized for the 4"-diameter, 2.5 mm-thick, multi-strip geometry that will be used for the GAPS flight detectors.

Rational maps from Euclidean Configuration Spaces to Spheres
Authors:

Abstract:
In this note we give an algorithm to determine the rational homotopy type of the free and pointed map** spaces $ map(F(\mathbb R^m,k), S^n)$ and $ map^*(F(\mathbb R^m,k), S^n)$. An explicit description of these spaces is given for $k=3$. The general case for $n$ odd is also presented as an immediate consequence of the rational version of a classical result of Thom.

We present a hard X-ray observation of the TeV gamma-ray binary candidate HESS J1832-093 coincident with supernova remnant (SNR) G22.7-0.2 using the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). Non-thermal X-ray emission from XMMU J183245-0921539, the X-ray source associated with HESS J1832-093, is detected up to ~30 keV and is well-described by an absorbed power-law model with the best-fit photon index $Γ= 1.5\pm0.1$. A re-analysis of archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data finds that the long-term X-ray flux increase of XMMU J183245-0921539 is $50^{+40}_{-20}$% (90% C.L.), much less than previously reported. A search for a pulsar spin period or binary orbit modulation yields no significant signal to a pulse fraction limit of fp < 19% in the range 4 ms < P < 40 ks. No red noise is detected in the FFT power spectrum to suggest active accretion from a binary system. While further evidence is required, we argue that the X-ray and gamma-ray properties of XMMU J183245-0921539 are most consistent with a non-accreting binary generating synchrotron X- rays from particle acceleration in the shock formed as a result of the pulsar and stellar wind collision. We also report on three nearby hard X-ray sources, one of which may be associated with diffuse emission from a fast-moving supernova fragment interacting with a dense molecular cloud.

The invariant metric affine connections on Berger spheres which are Einstein with skew torsion are determined in both Riemannian and Lorentzian signature. Expressions of such connections are explicitly given. In particular, every Berger sphere with Lorentzian signature admits invariant metric affine connections Einstein with skew-torsion up to $\mathbb{S}^3$. For Riemannian signature, the existence of such connections strongly depends on the dimension of the sphere and on the scale of the deformation used for the Berger metric. In particular, there are Riemaniann Berger spheres, not Einstein, which admit invariant metric affine connections Einstein with skew-torsion.

A Riemann-Cartan manifold is a Riemannian manifold endowed with an affine connection which is compatible with the metric tensor. This affine connection is not necessarily torsion free. Under the assumption that the manifold is a homogeneous space, the notion of homogeneous Riemann-Cartan space is introduced in a natural way. For the case of the odd dimensional spheres $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}$ viewed as homogeneous spaces of the special unitary groups, the classical Nomizu's Theorem on invariant connections has permitted to obtain an algebraical description of all the connections which turn the spheres $\mathbb{S}^{2n+1}$ into homogeneous Riemann-Cartan spaces. The expressions of such connections as covariant derivatives are given by means of several invariant tensors: the ones of the usual Sasakian structure of the sphere; an invariant 3-differential form coming from a $3$-Sasakian structure on $\mathbb{S}^7$; and the involved ones in the almost contact metric structure of $\mathbb{S}^5$ provided by its natural embedding into the nearly Kähler manifold $\mathbb{S}^6$. Furthermore, the invariant connections sharing geodesics with the Levi-Civita one have also been completely described. Finally, $\mathbb{S}^3$ and $\mathbb{S}^7$ are characterized as the unique odd-dimensional spheres which admit nontrivial invariant connections satisfying an Einstein-type equation.
