Gravitating vortices and Symplectic Reduction by Stages
Abstract: We undertake a novel approach to the existence problem for gravitating vortices on a Riemann surface based on symplectic reduction by stages, which seems to be new in the PDE as well as the gauge theory literature. The main technical tool for our study is the reduced $α$-K-energy, for which we establish convexity properties by means of finite-energy pluripotential theory, as recently applied to th… ▽ More

Kähler-Yang-Mills Equations and Vortices
Abstract: The Kähler-Yang-Mills equations are coupled equations for a Kähler metric on a compact complex manifold and a connection on a complex vector bundle over it. After briefly reviewing the main aspects of the geometry of the Kähler-Yang-Mills equations, we consider dimensional reductions of the equations related to vortices - solutions to certain Yang-Mills-Higgs equations.

Abstract: In this note we present an obstruction to the existence of solutions to the self-dual Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs equations on a compact surface, which depends on the multiplicities of the zeroes of the \emph{Higgs field} and the \emph{vortex number} $N$. In particular, we exhibit infinitely many examples of Higgs fields for which solutions cannot exist.

Higgs bundles over elliptic curves for complex reductive Lie groups
Abstract: We study Higgs bundles over an elliptic curve with complex reductive structure group, describing the (normalization of) its moduli spaces and the associated Hitchin fibration. The case of trivial degree is covered by the work of Thaddeus in 2001. Our arguments are different from those of Thaddeus and cover arbitrary degree.

Higgs bundles for the non-compact dual of the special orthogonal group
Abstract: Higgs bundles over a closed orientable surface can be defined for any real reductive Lie group G. In this paper we examine the case G=SO*(2n). We describe a rigidity phenomenon encountered in the case of maximal Toledo invariant. Using this and Morse theory in the moduli space of Higgs bundles, we show that the moduli space is connected in this maximal Toledo case. The Morse theory also allows us… ▽ More

Higgs bundles over elliptic curves
Abstract: In this paper we study $G$-Higgs bundles over an elliptic curve when the structure group $G$ is a classical complex reductive Lie group. Modifying the notion of family, we define a new moduli problem for the classification of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles of a given topological type over an elliptic curve and we give an explicit description of the associated moduli space as a finite quotient of a p… ▽ More

Pseudo-real principal Higgs bundles on compact Kaehler manifolds
Abstract: Let $X$ be a compact connected Kähler manifold equipped with an anti-holomorphic involution which is compatible with the Kähler structure. Let $G$ be a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group equipped with a real form $σ_G$. We define pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles on $X$; these are generalizations of real algebraic principal $G$--bundles over a real algebraic variety. Next we defin… ▽ More

Connectedness of the moduli of Sp(2p,2q)-Higgs bundles
Abstract: Using the Morse-theoretic techniques introduced by Hitchin, we prove that the moduli space of $\Sp(2p,2q)$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$ is connected. In particular, this implies that the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of the surface in $\Sp(2p,2q)$ is connected.

The y-genus of the moduli space of PGL_n-Higgs bundles on a curve (for degree coprime to n)
Abstract: Building on our previous joint work with A. Schmitt [7] we explain a recursive algorithm to determine the cohomology of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on any given curve (in the coprime situation). As an application of the method we compute the y-genus of the space of PGL_n-Higgs bundles for any rank n, confirming a conjecture of T. Hausel.

On the motives of moduli of chains and Higgs bundles
Abstract: We take another approach to Hitchin's strategy of computing the cohomology of moduli spaces of Higgs bundles by localization with respect to the circle-action. Our computation is done in the dimensional completion of the Grothendieck ring of varieties and starts by describing the classes of moduli stacks of chains rather than their coarse moduli spaces. As an application we show that the n-torsi… ▽ More

Coupled equations for Kähler metrics and Yang-Mills connections
Abstract: We study equations on a principal bundle over a compact complex manifold coupling a connection on the bundle with a Kahler structure on the base. These equations generalize the conditions of constant scalar curvature for a Kahler metric and Hermite-Yang-Mills for a connection. We provide a moment map interpretation of the equations and study obstructions for the existence of solutions, generalizin… ▽ More

A Milnor-Wood inequality for complex hyperbolic lattices in quaternionic space
Abstract: We prove a Milnor-Wood inequality for representations of the fundamental group of a compact complex hyperbolic manifold in the group of isometries of quaternionic hyperbolic space. Of special interest is the case of equality, and its application to rigidity. We show that equality can only be achieved for totally geodesic representations, thereby establishing a global rigidity theorem for totally g… ▽ More
