This work presents a polyelectrolyte (PE) model based on a freely jointed chain (FJC) in which the beads are ionizable and the bonds are rigid. Electrostatic interactions considered are of the short range type up to next-nearest neighbours using a Debye-Hückel (DH) potential. Exact expressions for the conformational and protonation properties are obtained as a function of the pH using the transfer matrix method and the integration of the angular variables. For the finite cases with low N values, relevant differences arise on both the protonation curve and the end to end distance due to the end effects. However, when increasing N a rather rapid convergence is observed to the infinite chain limiting case.

In case that a C$^*$-algebra $A$ is regarded as a JB$^*$-algebra, the J-strict topology of $M(A)$ is precisely the well-studied C$^*$-strict topology. We prove that every JB$^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ is J-strict dense in its multipliers algebra $M(\mathfrak{A})$, and that latter algebra is J-strict complete. We show that continuous surjective Jordan homomorphisms, triple homomorphisms, and orthogonality preserving operators between JB$^*$-algebras admit J-strict continuous extensions to the corresponding type of operators between the multipliers algebras. We characterize J-strict continuous functionals on the multipliers algebra of a JB$^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$, and we establish that the dual of $M(\mathfrak{A})$ with respect to the J-strict topology is isometrically isomorphic to $\mathfrak{A}^*$. We also present a first applications of the J-strict topology of the multipliers algebra, by showing that under the extra hypothesis that $\mathfrak{A}$ and $\mathfrak{B}$ are $σ$-unital JB$^*$-algebras, every surjective Jordan $^*$-homomorphism (respectively, triple homomorphism or continuous orthogonality preserving operator) from $\mathfrak{A}$ onto $\mathfrak{B}$ admits an extension to a surjective J-strict continuous Jordan $^*$-homomorphism (respectively, triple homomorphism or continuous orthogonality preserving operator) from $M(\mathfrak{A})$ onto $M(\mathfrak{B})$.

In order to study the physics of the accretion process in greater detail, along with the structure and dynamics of the circumstellar matter in the system, we supplement our previous results obtained from photometry with an analysis of the spectra of UU Cas. Methods. We collected all available spectra used in previous publications on UU Cas and we acquired new ones. The method of disentangling was applied to this set of spectra spanning the years 2008-2021. The orbital parameters were disentangled and a fit of the separated component spectra by synthetic ones has been used to determine the physical parameters of the component stars. We compared the results to models of the evolution of interacting binaries. Results. We found that in addition to the dominant role of the donor star and a weak contribution of the gainer, the line profiles are strongly influenced by the circumstellar matter. The absorption lines reveal a presence of a disk wind emanating above the orbital plane. The variability of Hα emission yields evidence of changes in the structure of the circumstellar matter on a timescale of several orbital periods.

We present the results of the study of the close binary UU Cassiopeiae based on previously published multi wavelength photometric and spectroscopic data. Based on eclipse timings of the last 117 years, we find an improved orbital period of $\rm P_{o} = 8.519296(8)$ d. In addition, we find a long cycle of length $T$ $\sim$ 270 d in the $I_c$-band data. There is no evidence for orbital period change during the last century, suggesting that the rate of mass loss from the system or mass exchange between the stars should be small. Sporadic and rapid brightness drops of up to $Δ$$V$ = 0.3 mag are detected during the whole orbital cycle and infrared photometry clearly suggests the presence of circumstellar matter. We model the orbital light curve of 11 published datasets fixing the mass ratio and cool star temperature from previous spectroscopic work; $q$= 0.52 and $T_c$= 22 700 K. We find a system seen at angle 74 degrees with a stellar separation of 52 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$, a temperature for the hotter star $T_h$= 30 200 $K$ and stellar masses 17.4 and 9 ${\rm M_{\odot}}$ , radii 7.0 and 16.9 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$ and surface gravities log g = 3.98 and 2.94, for the hotter and cooler star, respectively. We find an accretion disk surrounding the more massive star, with a radius of 21 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$ and vertical thickness in its outer edge of 6.5 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$, mostly occulting the hotter star. Two active regions hotter than the surrounding disk are found, one located roughly in the expected position where the stream impacts the disk and the other one in the opposite side of the disk. Changes are observed in parameters of the disk and spots in different datasets.

The subtype of hot algol semidetached binaries dubbed Double Periodic Variables (DPVs) are characterized by a photometric cycle longer than the orbital one, whose nature has been related to a magnetic dynamo in the donor component controlling the mass transfer rate. We aim to understand the morphologic changes observed in the light curve of OGLE-BLG-ECL-157529 that are linked to the long cycle. In particular, we want to explain the changes in relative depth of primary and secondary eclipses. We analyze $I$ and $V$-band OGLE photometric times series spanning 18.5 years and model the orbital light curve. We find that OGLE-BLG-ECL-157529 is a new eclipsing Galactic DPV of orbital period 24\fd8, and that its long cycle length decreases in amplitude and length during the time baseline. We show that the changes of the orbital light curve can be reproduced considering an accretion disk of variable thickness and radius, surrounding the hottest stellar component. Our models indicate changes in the temperatures of hot spot and bright spot during the long cycle, and also in the position of the bright spot. This, along with the changes in disk radius might indicate a variable mass transfer in this system.

We establish a more precise description of those surjective or bijective continuous linear operators preserving orthogonality between C$^*$-algebras. The new description is applied to determine all uniformly continuous one-parameter semigroups of orthogonality preserving operators on an arbitrary C$^*$-algebra. We prove that given a family $\{T_t: t\in \mathbb{R}_0^{+}\}$ of orthogonality preserving bounded linear bijections on a general C$^*$-algebra $A$ with $T_0=Id$, if for each $t\geq 0,$ we set $h_t = T_t^{**} (1)$ and we write $r_t$ for the range partial isometry of $h_t$ in $A^{**},$ and $S_t$ stands for the triple isomorphism on $A$ associated with $T_t$ satisfying $h_t^* S_t(x)$ $= S_t(x^*)^* h_t$, $h_t S_t(x^*)^* =$ $ S_t(x) h_t^*$, $h_t r_t^* S_t(x) =$ $S_t(x) r_t^* h_t$, and $T_t(x) = h_t r_t^* S_t(x) = S_t(x) r_t^* h_t, \hbox{ for all } x\in A,$ the following statements are equivalent:
$(a)$ $\{T_t: t\in \mathbb{R}_0^{+}\}$ is a uniformly continuous one-parameter semigroup of orthogonality preserving operators on $A$;
$(b)$ $\{S_t: t\in \mathbb{R}_0^{+}\}$ is a uniformly continuous one-parameter semigroup of surjective linear isometries (i.e. triple isomorphisms) on $A$ (and hence there exists a triple derivation $δ$ on $A$ such that $S_t = e^{t δ}$ for all $t\in \mathbb{R}$), the map** $t\mapsto h_t $ is continuous at zero, and the identity $ h_{t+s} = h_t r_t^* S_t^{**} (h_s),$ holds for all $s,t\in \mathbb{R}.$

The ground state of the U-Mo system is studied in this work using an evolutionary algorithm coupled with \textit{ab initio} calculations. This methodology is applied to several compositions, with a more detailed examination at the U-rich side. A new ground state is identified within an approach that considers structures for up to 3 formula units per cell. A supercell scheme based on the pure phase structure of each element is used for dilute compositions. The ground state at a pressure of 1 atm. is characterized by only two stable compounds: $Ω$-phase and a new phase, named $α$-U$_{15}$Mo in this work, with a structure determined by adding a substitutional Mo impurity to a $1\times 2\times 2$ supercell of $α$-U. A range of immiscibility of U in bcc-Mo based structures is extended from 0 to nearby 50 at. \% of U. The new $α$-U$_{15}$Mo phase comprising the ground state has similar features to those of the $α'$-phase formed in quenched samples at room temperature. The internal relaxation of U atoms in this phase resembles the movements due to charge density waves observed in orthorhombic $α_1$-U. The ground state of the U$_{15}$Mo compound at T=0 K can not be fully identified due to the charge density wave associated with $α$-U. That structure could be a supercell based on the structurally undefined $α_3$-U phase.

The repulsive term of Van der Waals equation of state has been deduced and improved in this work using a probabilistic description of the configurational entropy. The aim is to find out whether its physical basis is suitable for the study of dense fluids like liquids and glasses. The extended Van der Waals model accurately describes a system composed of independent Hard Spheres below packing fraction η < 0.3, giving a pole at η ~ 0.51 in close agreement with Molecular Dynamic simulation results. The inclusion of holes in the configurational entropy description improves the model but only below η < 0.2, precluding its application to high density fluids and glasses. In addition, neither local nor global clustering of Hard Spheres can be described using this approach. A physical model other than Van der Waals equation of state is required to accurately describe the continuity of gaseous and liquid states with the same expression. In this work, a model for the configurational entropy of mixing is proposed which could reveal whether such continuity really exists.

Abstract:
We prove that every surjective isometry between the unit spheres of two trace class spaces admits a unique extension to a surjective complex linear or conjugate linear isometry between the spaces. This provides a positive solution to Tingley's problem in a new class of operator algebras.

Antiferromagnets (AFs) are remarkable magnetically ordered materials that due to the absence of a net magnetic moment do not generate dipolar fields and are insensitive to external magnetic field perturbations. However, it has been notoriously difficult to control antiferromagnetic moments by any practical means suitable for device applications. This has left AFs over their hundred years history virtually unexploited and only poorly explored, in striking contrast to the thousands of years of fascination and utility of ferromagnetism. Very recently it has been predicted and experimentally confirmed that relativistic spin-orbit torques can provide the means for efficient electrical control of an AF. Here we place the emerging field of antiferromagnetic spintronics on the map of non-volatile solid state memory technologies. We demonstrate the complete write/store/read functionality in an antiferromagnetic CuMnAs bit cell embedded in a standard printed circuit board communicating with a computer via a USB interface. We show that the elementary-shape bit cells fabricated from a single-layer AF are electrically written on timescales ranging from milliseconds to nanoseconds and we demonstrate their deterministic multi-level switching. The multi-level cell characteristics, reflecting series of reproducible, electrically controlled domain reconfigurations, allow us to integrate memory and signal counter functionalities within the bit cell.

Instead of the unstable $I4/mmm$ structure, in this work the $P6/mmm$ ($\# 191$) space group, usually called $Ω$-phase, is proposed as the fundamental state. Electronic and elastic properties are studied in this work in order to characterize the physical properties of the new ground state. The stability of the $Ω$-phase is studied by means of its elastic constants calculation and phonon dispersion spectrum. Analysis of isotropic indices shows that the new phase is a ductile material with a minimal degree of anisotropy, suggesting that U$_2$Mo in the $P6/mmm$ structure is an elastic isotropic material. Analysis of charge density, density of electronic states (DOS) and the character of the bands revealed a high level of hybridization between $d$-molybdenum electronic states and $d$- and $f$-uranium ones.

Abstract:
Let $X$ be a finite, simple graph with vertex set $V(X)$. The $2$-distance graph $T_2(X)$ of $X$ is the graph with the same vertex set as $X$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance in $X$ is exactly $2$. A graph $G$ is a $2$-distance graph if there exists a graph $X$ such that $T_2(X)=G$. In this paper, we give three characterizations of $2$-distance graphs, and find all graph…

This work reports the structural instability at T=0 K of the U2Mo compound in the structure C11b under the distortion related to the C66 elastic constant. The electronic properties of U2Mo such density of states (DOS), bands and Fermi surface (FS) are studied to understand the source of the instability. The C11b structure can be interpreted as formed by parallel linear chains along the z-directions each one composed by successive U-Mo-U blocks. The hybridization due to electronic interactions inside the U-Mo-U blocks is slightly modified under the D6 distortion. The change in distance among chains modifies the U-U interaction and produces the split of f-states. The distorted structure is stabilized by the energy lowering of the hybridized states, mainly between d-Mo and f-U states, together with the f-band split. Consequently, an induced Peierls distortion is produced in U2Mo due to the D6 distortion. In addition, the results of this work remarks that the structure of the ground state of the U2Mo compound is other than the assumed C11b structure.

This work presents a simple model for describing the interstitials behavior in solid solutions enlarging the current random interstitial atoms paradigm. A general and parameter-free analytical expression to compute the configurational entropy, valid for any tetrahedral or octahedral interstitial solutions and suitable for the treatment of interstitials clustering, is deduced for that purpose. The effect of interstitials clustering on the configurational entropy is shown by applying the methodology to the Nb-H and bcc Zr-H solid solutions. The model for Nb-H presented in this work, based on the existence of H pairs in the αphase and double pairs in the α'phase, provides the basis to explain the unsolved controversies in this system. The unusual shape of the partial configurational entropy measured in bcc Zr-H can be accurately described if a small amount of H clusters are included in the solution.
