General Renewal Equations Motivated by Biology and Epidemiology
Abstract: We present a unified framework ensuring well posedness and providing stability estimates to a class of Initial Boundary Value Problems for renewal equations comprising a variety of biological or epidemiological models. This versatility is achieved considering fairly general -- possibly non linear and/or non local -- interaction terms, allowing both low regularity assumptions and independent variab… ▽ More

Autonomous Vehicles Driving Traffic: The Cauchy Problem
Abstract: This paper deals with the Cauchy Problem for a PDE-ODE model, where a system of two conservation laws, namely the Two-Phase macroscopic model, is coupled with an ordinary differential equation describing the trajectory of an autonomous vehicle (AV), which aims to control the traffic flow. Under suitable assumptions, we prove a global in time existence result.

Optimal control problems for a parabolic system modeling glioma therapy
Abstract: In this paper we consider optimal control problems for a parabolic system modeling a therapy, based on oncolytic viruses, for the glioma brain cancer. Using several techniques typical of functional analysis, we prove the global in time well posedness of the control model, the existence of optimal controls for specific objective functionals, which are natural for cancer therapies, and we derive nec… ▽ More

On the Coupling of Well Posed Differential Models -- Detailed Version
Abstract: Consider the coupling of $2$ evolution equations, each generating a global process. We prove that the resulting system generates a new global process. This statement can be applied to differential equations of various kinds. In particular, it also yields the well posedness of a predator-prey model, where the coupling is in the differential terms, and of an epidemiological model, which does not fit… ▽ More

Infectious Diseases Spreading Fought by Multiple Vaccines Having a Prescribed Time Effect
Abstract: We propose a framework for the description of the effects of vaccinations on the spreading of an epidemic disease. Different vaccines can be dosed, each providing different immunization times and immunization levels. Differences due to individuals' ages are accounted for through the introduction of either a continuous age structure or a discrete set of age classes. Extensions to gender differences… ▽ More

Well Posedness and Control in a NonLocal SIR Model
Abstract: SIR models, also with age structure, can be used to describe the evolution of an infective disease. A vaccination campaign influences this dynamics immunizing part of the susceptible individuals, essentially turning them into recovered individuals. We assume that vaccinations are dosed at prescribed times or ages which introduce discontinuities in the evolutions of the S and R populations. It is t… ▽ More

A multiscale model for traffic regulation via autonomous vehicles
Abstract: Autonomous vehicles (AVs) allow new ways of regulating the traffic flow on road networks. Most of available results in this direction are based on microscopic approaches, where ODEs describe the evolution of regular cars and AVs. In this paper, we propose a multiscale approach, based on recently developed models for moving bottlenecks. Our main result is the proof of existence of solutions for ope… ▽ More

On the optimization of conservation law models at a junction with inflow and flow distribution controls
Abstract: The paper proposes a general framework to analyze control problems for conservation law models on a network. Namely we consider a general class of junction distribution controls and inflow controls and we establish the compactness in $L^1$ of a class of flux-traces of solutions. We then derive the existence of solutions for two optimization problems: (I) the maximization of an integral functional… ▽ More

A Game Theoretic Approach to Hyperbolic Consensus Problems
Abstract: We introduce the use of conservation laws to develop strategies in multi-player consensus games. First, basic well posedness results provide a reliable analytic setting. Then, a general non anticipative strategy is proposed through its rigorous analytic definitions and then tested by means of numerical integrations.

A Riemann solver at a junction compatible with a homogenization limit
Abstract: We consider a junction regulated by a traffic lights, with n incoming roads and only one outgoing road. On each road the Phase Transition traffic model, proposed in [6], describes the evolution of car traffic. Such model is an extension of the classic Lighthill-Whitham-Richards one, obtained by assuming that different drivers may have different maximal speed. By sending to infinity the number of c… ▽ More

The Godunov Method for a 2-Phase Model
Abstract: We consider the Godunov numerical method to the phase-transition traffic model, proposed in [6], by Colombo, Marcellini, and Rascle. Numerical tests are shown to prove the validity of the method. Moreover we highlight the differences between such model and the one proposed in [1], by Blandin, Work, Goatin, Piccoli, and Bayen.

Polynomial Profits in Renewable Resources Management
Abstract: A system of renewal equations on a graph provides a framework to describe the exploitation of a biological resource. In this context, we formulate an optimal control problem, prove the existence of an optimal control and ensure that the target cost function is polynomial in the control. In specific situations, further information about the form of this dependence is obtained. As a consequence, in… ▽ More

Optimal strategies for a time-dependent harvesting problem
Abstract: We focus on an optimal control problem, introduced by Bressan and Shen as a model for fish harvesting. We consider the time-dependent case and we establish existence and uniqueness of an optimal strategy, and sufficient conditions for optimality. We also consider a related differential game that models the situation where there are several competing fish companies and we prove existence of Nash eq… ▽ More

Differential Equations Modeling Crowd Interactions
Abstract: Nonlocal conservation laws are used to describe various realistic instances of crowd behaviors. First, a basic analytic framework is established through an "ad hoc" well posedness theorem for systems of nonlocal conservation laws in several space dimensions interacting non locally with a system of ODEs. Numerical integrations show possible applications to the interaction of different groups of ped… ▽ More

Conservation laws in the modeling of moving crowds
Abstract: This paper is a proceeding of the conference hyp2012 that was held in Padova in June 2012. Models for crowd dynamics are presented and compared. Well posedness results allow to exhibit the existence of optimal controls in various situations. A new approach not based on partial differential equations is also briefly considered.

A Class of Non-Local Models for Pedestrian Traffic
Abstract: We present a new class of macroscopic models for pedestrian flows. Each individual is assumed to move towards a fixed target, deviating from the best path according to the instantaneous crowd distribution. The resulting equation is a conservation law with a nonlocal flux. Each equation in this class generates a Lipschitz semigroup of solutions and is stable with respect to the functions and parame… ▽ More

The Aw-Rascle traffic model with locally constrained flow
Abstract: We consider solutions of the Aw-Rascle model for traffic flow fulfilling a constraint on the flux at $x=0$. Two different kinds of solutions are proposed: at $x=0$ the first one conserves both the number of vehicles and the generalized momentum, while the second one conserves only the number of cars. We study the invariant domains for these solutions and we compare the two Riemann solvers in terms… ▽ More

Entropy type conditions for Riemann solvers at nodes
Abstract: This paper deals with conservation laws on networks, represented by graphs. Entropy-type conditions are considered to determine dynamics at nodes. Since entropy dispersion is a local concept, we consider a network composed by a single node $J$ with $n$ incoming and $m$ outgoing arcs. We extend at $J$ the classical Kružkov entropy obtaining two conditions, denoted by (E1) and (E2): the first… ▽ More

Abstract: Consider a fluid flowing through a junction between two pipes with different sections. Its evolution is described by the 2D or 3D Euler equations, whose analytical theory is far from complete and whose numerical treatment may be rather costly. This note compares different 1D approaches to this phenomenon.

Verification Theorems for Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations
Abstract: We study an optimal control problem in Bolza form and we consider the value function associated to this problem. We prove two verification theorems which ensure that, if a function $W$ satisfies some suitable weak continuity assumptions and a Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman inequality outside a countably $\mathcal H^n$-rectifiable set, then it is lower or equal to the value function. These results can b… ▽ More
