Our understanding of quantum materials is commonly based on precise determinations of their electronic spectrum by spectroscopic means, most notably angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Both require atomically clean and flat crystal surfaces which traditionally are prepared by in-situ mechanical cleaving in ultrahigh vacuum chambers. We present a new approach that addresses three main issues of the current state-of-the-art methods: 1) Cleaving is a highly stochastic and thus inefficient process; 2) Fracture processes are governed by the bonds in a bulk crystal, and many materials and surfaces simply do not cleave; 3) The location of the cleave is random, preventing data collection at specified regions of interest. Our new workflow is based on Focused Ion Beam (FIB) machining of micro-stress lenses in which shape (rather than crystalline) anisotropy dictates the plane of cleavage, which can be placed at a specific target layer. As proof-of-principle we show ARPES results from micro-cleaves of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ along the ac plane and from two surface orientations of SrTiO$_3$, a notoriously difficult to cleave cubic perovskite.

Through a combination of atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffraction and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy studies, we find that above a certain critical thickness of the ferroelectric layer, the large structural distortions associated with the ferroelastic domains propagate through the top SrRuO$_3$ layer, locally modifying the orientation of the orthorhombic SrRuO$_3$ and creating a modulated structure that extends beyond the ferroelectric layer boundaries.

We study the complex ferroelastic/ferroelectric domain structure in the prototypical ferroelectric PbTiO3 epitaxially strained on (110)o-oriented DyScO3 substrates, using a combination of atomic force microscopy, laboratory and synchrotron x-ray diffraction and high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy. We observe that the anisotropic strain imposed by the orthorhombic substrate creates a large asymmetry in the domain configuration, with domain walls macroscopically aligned along one of the two in-plane directions. We show that the periodicity as a function of film thickness deviates from the Kittel law. As the ferroelectric film thickness increases, we find that the domain configuration evolves from flux-closure to a/c-phase, with a larger scale arrangement of domains into superdomains.

Ferroelectrics are technologically important, with wide application in micromechanical systems, nonlinear optics, and information storage. Recent discoveries of exotic polarisation textures in these materials, which can strongly influence their properties, have brought to the forefront questions about the nature of their domain walls -- long believed to be primarily Ising, with locally null polarisation. Here, combining three complementary techniques -- second harmonic generation microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy - to cover all the relevant lengthscales, we reveal the Néel character (non-Ising polarisation oriented perpendicular to the wall) of 180° domain walls in c-phase tetragonal ferroelectric lead titanate epitaxial thin films, for both artificial and intrinsic domains at room temperature. Furthermore, we show that variations in the domain density -- detected both optically and via local piezoresponse, then quantified by radial autocorrelation analysis -- can give us insight into the underlying defect potential present in these materials.

Artificially induced asymmetric tribological properties of ferroelectrics offer an alternative route to visualize and control ferroelectric domains. Here, we observe the switchable friction and wear behavior of ferroelectrics using a nanoscale scanning probe where down domains having lower friction coefficient than up domains can be used as smart masks as they show slower wear rate than up domains. This asymmetry is enabled by flexoelectrically coupled polarization in the up and down domains under a sufficiently high contact force. Moreover, we determine that this polarization-sensitive tribological asymmetry is universal across ferroelectrics with different chemical composition and crystalline symmetry. Finally, using this switchable tribology and multi-pass patterning with a domain-based dynamic smart mask, we demonstrate three-dimensional nanostructuring exploiting the asymmetric wear rates of up and down domains, which can, furthermore, be scaled up to technologically relevant (mm-cm) size. These findings establish that ferroelectrics are electrically tunable tribological materials at the nanoscale for versatile applications.

Electrochemical phenomena in ferroelectrics are of particular interest for catalysis and sensing applications, with recent studies highlighting the combined role of the ferroelectric polarisation, applied surface voltage and overall switching history. Here, we present a systematic Kelvin probe microscopy study of the effect of relative humidity and polarisation switching history on the surface charge dissipation in ferroelectric Pb(Zr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$)O$_3$ thin films. We analyze the interaction of surface charges with ferroelectric domains through the framework of physically constrained unsupervised machine learning matrix factorization, Dictionary Learning, and reveal a complex interplay of voltage-mediated physical processes underlying the observed signal decays. Additional insight into the observed behaviours is given by a Fitzhugh-Nagumo reaction-diffusion model, highlighting the lateral spread and charge passivation process contributors within the Dictionary Learning analysis.

Graphene is a mechanically robust 2D material promising for flexible optoelectronic applications. However, its electromagnetic properties under strain are experimentally poorly understood. Here we present the far-infrared transmission spectra of large-area chemical-vapor deposited monolayer graphene on a polyethylene terephthalate substrate subjected to uniaxial strain. The effective strain value is calibrated using the Raman spectroscopy and corrected for a relaxation of wrinkles and folds seen directly by atomic-force microscopy. We find that while the Drude weight and the Fermi level remain constant, the scattering rate increases by more than 10% per 1% of applied strain, showing a high level of reproducibility during strain cycling. As a result, the electronic mobility and optical absorption of graphene at terahertz and lower frequencies appear to also be sensitive to strain, which opens pathways to control these key parameters mechanically. We suggest that such a functionality can be potentially used in flexible optoelectronic and microelectromechanical systems based on graphene. By combining our findings with existing theoretical models, we discuss the possible mechanisms of strain-controlled Drude scattering.

Here we report an entirely unexpected phenomenon occurring in vacuum systems, namely strong n-do** of graphene due to chemical species generated by common ion high-vacuum gauges. The effect --reversible upon exposing graphene to air-- is significant, as do** rates can largely exceed 10^{12} cm^{-2}/hour, depending on pressure and the relative position of the gauge and the graphene device. It is important to be aware of the phenomenon, as its basic manifestation can be mistakenly interpreted as vacuum-induced desorption of p-dopants.

Here, we report evidence of electrical conduction also at 180° ferroelectric domain walls in the simpler tetragonal ferroelectric PZT thin films. The observed conduction shows nonlinear, asymmetric current-voltage characteristics, thermal activation at high temperatures and high stability. We relate this behavior to the microscopic structure of the domain walls, allowing local defects segregation, and the highly asymmetric nature of the electrodes in our local probe measurements.

Abstract:
Rare radiative decay $φ\toηπ^0γ$ was studied with SND detector at {VEPP-2M} electron-positron collider and its branching ratio was measured: $B(φ\toηπ^0γ)=(0.88\pm0.14\pm0.09)\cdot 10^{-4}$. Significant contribution of the $a_0(980)γ$ intermediate state was observed in the decay. The result is based on total integrated luminosity corresponding to $2\cdot10^7$ produced $φ$ mesons.

Abstract:
In the experiment with the SND detector at VEPP-2M e^+e^- collider the process $e^+e^-\toπ^+π^-π^0$ was studied in the energy range 2E_0 from 1.04 to 1.38 GeV. A broad peak was observed with the visible mass $M_{vis}=1220\pm 20$ MeV and cross section in the maximum $σ_0\simeq 4$ nb. The peak can be interpreted as a $ω$-like resonance $ω(1200)$.

Abstract:
In the SND experiment at the VEPP-2M electron-positron collider the PHI(1020)--->PI0+PI0+GAMMA decay was studied. The branching ratio B(PHI--->PI0+PI0+GAMMA)=(1.14+-0.10+-0.12)x10^{-4} was measured. It was shown, that the F0(980)GAMMA mechanism dominates in this decay and the 4-quark model of F0(980) describes our data most consistently.

Abstract:
Results from the Spherical Nonmagnetic Detector (SND) on $Δ(1232)$ isobar electroproduction in the collisions of beam electrons (positrons) and residual gas nuclei in the VEPP-2M $e^+e^-$ collider are presented. On the basis of the obtained data the expected counting rate of this process in future high luminosity $e^+e^-$ colliders (~$φ$-, $c$-$τ$- and $b$-factories) was estimated.

The total integrated luminosity of 6.4 pb^{-1} was collected in the energy range 2E=0.4-1.4 GeV (MHAD97 experiment), corresponding to 4*10^5 mu^+ mu^- pairs produced. Preliminary results of the 1996 phi-meson experiment (FI96) are presented. The total number of phi-mesons produced is 4*10^6. New data on rare decays of phi and eta (550) mesons, in particular
B(phi -> eta gamma) = (1.30+-0.06+-0.07)%,
B(phi -> pi^0 pi^0 gamma) = (1.1+-0.2)*10^{-4}, (M_{pi^0 pi^0} > 800 MeV),
B(phi -> f^0 gamma) = (4.7+-1.0)*10^{-4},
B(phi -> eta pi^0 gamma) = (1.3+-0.5)*10^{-4},
B(phi -> eta' gamma) < 1.7*10^{-4},
B(phi -> 2 pi^0 ) < 6*10^{-4} were obtained.
