Let $Γ$ be a finite set of Jordan curves in the plane. For any curve $γ\in Γ$, we denote the bounded region enclosed by $γ$ as $\tildeγ$. We say that $Γ$ is a non-piercing family if for any two curves $α, β\in Γ$, $\tildeα \setminus \tildeβ$ is a connected region. A non-piercing family of curves generalizes a family of $2$-intersecting curves in which each pair of curves intersect in at most two points. Snoeyink and Hershberger (``Swee** Arrangements of Curves'', SoCG '89) proved that if we are given a family $\mathcal{C}$ of $2$-intersecting curves and a fixed curve $C\in\mathcal{C}$, then the arrangement can be \emph{swept} by $C$, i.e., $C$ can be continuously shrunk to any point $p \in \tilde{C}$ in such a way that the we have a family of $2$-intersecting curves throughout the process. In this paper, we generalize the result of Snoeyink and Hershberger to the setting of non-piercing curves. We show that given an arrangement of non-piercing curves $Γ$, and a fixed curve $γ\in Γ$, the arrangement can be swept by $γ$ so that the arrangement remains non-piercing throughout the process. We also give a shorter and simpler proof of the result of Snoeyink and Hershberger and cite applications of their result, where our result leads to a generalization.

A scale-independent energy-momentum squared gravity (EMSG) allows different gravitational couplings for different types of sources and has been proven to have interesting implications in cosmology. In this paper, the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) formalism and the latest observational constraints are being used in order to extract constraints on this class of modified gravity models. The model has been constrained using the light element reaction rates. Using the tight constraint from BBN on the correction term in the Friedman equation due to EMSG, we find a significant deviation in the matter power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) even for a very small allowed value of the modification parameter, thus pointing out the sensitivity of the matter power spectrum at the small scales.

The ability to associate touch with other modalities has huge implications for humans and computational systems. However, multimodal learning with touch remains challenging due to the expensive data collection process and non-standardized sensor outputs. We introduce UniTouch, a unified tactile model for vision-based touch sensors connected to multiple modalities, including vision, language, and sound. We achieve this by aligning our UniTouch embeddings to pretrained image embeddings already associated with a variety of other modalities. We further propose learnable sensor-specific tokens, allowing the model to learn from a set of heterogeneous tactile sensors, all at the same time. UniTouch is capable of conducting various touch sensing tasks in the zero-shot setting, from robot gras** prediction to touch image question answering. To the best of our knowledge, UniTouch is the first to demonstrate such capabilities. Project page: https://cfeng16.github.io/UniTouch/

We show that the recently reported cosmic gravitational wave background by the NANOGrav 15-year collaboration may be the result of resonant particle creation during inflation. For the appropriate amplitude and particle mass an enhancement of the primordial scalar power spectrum could induce Secondary Induced Gravitational Waves (SIGW) which will appear on a scale corresponding to the frequency of the NANOGrav detection. Since the resonant creation will have an effect comparable to that of a delta function increment as studied by the NANOGrav 15-year collaboration, our study indicates that the low-frequency Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) data could reveal the aspects of the physics during inflation through the detection of a cosmic background of Gravitational Waves (GW).

Here we show that models which solve the dark-matter production also produce a contribution to the cosmic gravitational wave background that satisfies current constraints from pulsar timing and big bang nucleosynthesis. More importantly, this gravitational wave background may be observable in the next generation of space-based and ground-based gravitational wave interferometers.

The model-independent approach also enables us to examine the combined background and perturbative history, where tensions are reduced. Moreover, from a statistical perspective, we have shown that our results exhibit a better fit to the data when compared to the $Λ$CDM model.

We examine the possibility of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) formation in single-field models of inflation. Using the adiabatic or wave function renormalization scheme in the short-range modes, we show that one-loop correction to the power spectrum is free from quadratic UV divergence. We consider a framework in which PBHs are produced during the transition from Slow Roll (SR) to Ultra Slow Roll (USR) followed by the end of inflation. We demonstrate that the renormalized power spectrum softens the contribution of the logarithmic IR divergence and severely restricts the possible mass range of produced PBHs in the said transition, namely, $M_{\rm PBH}\sim 10^{2}{\rm gm}$ ala a no-go theorem. In particular, we find that the produced PBHs are short-lived ($t^{\rm evap}_{\rm PBH}\sim 10^{-20}{\rm sec}$) and the corresponding number of e-folds in the USR region is restricted to $ΔN_{\rm USR}\approx 2$.

We consider a scenario of large-scale modification of gravity that does not invoke extra degrees of freedom but includes coupling between baryonic matter and dark matter in the Einstein frame. The total matter energy density follows the standard conservation, and evolution has the character of deceleration in this frame. The model exhibits interesting features in the Jordan frame realized by virtue of a disformal transformation where individual matter components adhere to standard conservation but gravity is modified. A generic parametrization of disformal transformation leaves thermal history intact. It gives rise to late time acceleration in the Jordan frame, which necessarily includes phantom crossing, which, in the standard framework, can be realized using at least two scalar fields. This scenario is embodied by two distinguishing features, namely, acceleration in the Jordan frame and deceleration in the Einstein frame, and the possibility of resolution of the Hubble tension thanks to the emergence of the phantom phase at late times.

A pseudo-Nambu Goldstone Boson (pNGB) arising from the breaking of a global symmetry ($G\rightarrow H$) can be one of the most promising candidates for the quintessence model, to explain the late-time acceleration of our universe. Motivated from the Composite Higgs scenario, we have investigated the case where the pNGB associated with $SO(N)/ SO(N-1)$ develops a potential through its couplings with the particles that do not form the complete representations of $G$. The Coleman Weinberg (CW) potential is generated via the external particles in the loop which are linked with the strongly interacting dynamics and can be computed predicatively. The model of Dark Energy (DE) is tested against several latest cosmological observations such as supernovae data of Pantheon, Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO), Redshift-space distortion (RSD) data, etc. We have found that the fit prefers the sub-Planckian value of the pNGB field decay constant. Moreover, we have found that the model predicts cosmological parameters well within the allowed range of the observation and thus gives a well-motivated model of quintessence.

In this paper, we consider a scenario of spontaneous baryogenesis in a framework of warm quintessential inflation where the residual inflaton field, left out after warm inflation, plays the role of quintessence field at late times and is coupled to a non-conserved baryonic current. Assuming a four fermion $(B-L)$ violating effective interaction, we have demonstrated that the required baryon asymmetry can be produced successfully in this case. We show that the post-inflationary evolution, with the underlying scalar field potential, $V(φ)=V^4_0 \exp{(-αφ^n/M_{\rm Pl}^4 ) }$, $n>1$ well suited to warm inflation, exhibits scaling behaviour soon after a brief kinetic regime. We show that the coupling of the scalar field to massive neutrino matter can give rise to exit from the scaling regime to cosmic acceleration at late times as massive neutrinos turn non-relativistic. The proposed model is shown to successfully describe the cosmic history from inflation to late-time acceleration, with the evolution independent of initial conditions, along with the generation of baryon asymmetry during the post-inflationary era. A brief analysis of relic gravity waves produced in the scenario is presented.

In a class of single field models of inflation, the idea of Primordial Black holes(PBHs) production is studied. In this case, the dynamics on small cosmological scales differs significantly from that of the large scales probed by the observations of cosmic microwave background(CMB). This difference becomes a virtue in producing correct physical ambiance for the seeds required to produce PBHs. Thus, once the perturbed scales renter the horizon of our Universe during the later epochs of radiation domination and subsequent matter domination, these seeds collapses to produce PBHs. We have shown, in this class of model, depending on the model parameters and the class defining set parameters, one can have PBHs formed for a vast mass ranges from $10^{-18}$ to $10^{-6}$ solar mass(\(\textup{M}_\odot\)). We have also shown, for a particular class of model, the total dark matter density today can be attributed to the PBHs density. The vast range of the mass depending on the class parameter, gives ample opportunity to study enriched phenomenological implications associated with this model to probe the nascent Universe dynamics.

We study crossing-free grid morphs for planar tree drawings using 3D. A morph consists of morphing steps, where vertices move simultaneously along straight-line trajectories at constant speeds. A crossing-free morph is known between two drawings of an $n$-vertex planar graph $G$ with $\mathcal{O}(n)$ morphing steps and using the third dimension it can be reduced to $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$ for an $n$-vertex tree [Arseneva et al.\ 2019]. However, these morphs do not bound one practical parameter, the resolution. Can the number of steps be reduced substantially by using the third dimension while kee** the resolution bounded throughout the morph? We answer this question in an affirmative and present a 3D non-crossing morph between two planar grid drawings of an $n$-vertex tree in $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n} \log n)$ morphing steps. We consider a scenario of modified gravity, which is generic to late-time acceleration, namely, acceleration in the Jordan frame and no acceleration in the Einstein frame. The possibility is realized by assuming an interaction between dark matter and the baryonic component in the Einstein frame which is removed by going to the Jordan frame using a disformal transformation giving rise to an exotic effective fluid responsible for causing phantom crossing at late times. In this scenario, past evolution is not distinguished from $Λ$CDM but late time dynamics is generically different due to the presence of phantom crossing that causes a monotonous increase in the expansion rate giving rise to distinctive late-time cosmic feature. The latter can play a crucial role in addressing the tension between the observed value of Hubble parameter by CMB (Cosmic Microwave Background) measurements and the local observations. We demonstrate that the Hubble tension significantly reduces in the scenario under consideration for the chosen scale factor parametrizations. The estimated age of the universe in the model is well within the observational bounds in the low and high red-shift regimes.

We consider the framework of quintessential inflation in the warm background which is caused by the dissipation of the scalar field energy density into relativistic degrees of freedom. The dissipation process has important consequences for the evolution both at the levels of background as well as perturbation and allows us to easily satisfy the observational constraints.~Our numerical analysis confirms that the model conforms to observational constraints even if the field-radiation coupling strength is weak. In the warm background, we investigate the post inflationary evolution of relic gravity waves produced during inflation whose amplitude is constrained by the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis constraint. Further, we investigate the effect of coupling on the amplitude of gravity waves and obtain the allowed phase space between the model parameters. The mechanism of quintessential inflation gives rise to the blue spectrum of gravitational wave background at high frequencies. We discuss the perspectives of detection of the signal of relic gravity waves by future proposed missions. Improvements of their sensitivities in the high-frequency regime, in the future, might allow us to probe the blue tilt of the spectrum caused by the presence of a kinetic regime in the underlying framework of inflation.

We consider non-thermal sterile dark matter particles produced as decay product during such transitions. The particles have a characteristic energy distribution - that associated with decays taking place in a matter dominated universe evolving to radiation domination. We primarily focus on the case when the particles are hot dark matter, and study their effects on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Large Scale Structure (LSS), explicitly taking into account their non-thermal momentum distribution. Our results for CMB angular power and linear matter power spectra reveal interesting features - such as an order of magnitude higher values of hot dark matter mass in comparison to the thermal case being consistent with the present data. We observe that this is related to the fact that $ΔN_{\rm eff}$ and the hot DM energy density can be independent of each other unlike the case of thermal or non-resonantly produced sterile hot DM. We also find features in the CMB at low $\ell$ angular power potentially related to supersonic transmission of hot dark matter through the photon-baryon plasma.

In the model under consideration, the inflaton field is non-minimally coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant, so that the latter appears to be dynamically important. We consider a quartic potential for the inflaton field, in particular the one asymptotically connected to the Higgs inflation, and a wider class of coupling functions not considered in the earlier work. Kee** in mind the observational bounds on the parameters - the amplitude of scalar perturbations $A_s$, spectral index $n_s$ and tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$, we demonstrate that the model a quartic potential and the proposed coupling function is in agreement with observation.

Generic features of models of inflation obtained from string compactifications are the correlations between the model parameters and the postinflationary evolution of the universe. Thus, the postinflationary evolution depends on the inflationary model parameters and accurate inflationary predictions require that this be incorporated in the evolution of the primordial spectrum. The fibre inflation model is a promising model of inflation constructed in type IIB string theory. This model has two interesting features in its postinflationary evolution. The reheating temperature of the model is directly correlated with the model parameters. The model also necessarily predicts some dark radiation, which can be sizable for certain choices of discrete parameters in the model. We analyze this model in detail using publicly available codes - ModeChord and CosmoMC with the latest Planck+BICEP2/Keck array data to constrain the model parameters and $N_{\rm pivot}$ (the number of $e$-foldings between horizon exit of the CMB pivot mode and the end of inflation). We also carry out the same analysis using the publicly available code Cobaya. We find the results of both the analysis to be in agreement. Our analysis provides the basic methods necessary to extract precise inflationary prediction in string models incorporating correlations between model parameters and postinflationary evolution.

In the recent time, inflationary cosmology is facing an existential crisis due to the proposed Swampland criterion which aims to evade any (meta-)stable de Sitter construction within the String landscape. It is been realised that a single field slow roll inflation is inconsistent with the Swampland criterion unless the inflationary model in realised in some non standard scenario such as Warm inflation or the Braneworld scenario. In \cite{Dimopoulos}, Dimopoulos and Owen introduced a new class of model of inflation dubbed as the power law plateau inflation in the standard cold inflationary scenario. But to realise this model in the standard scenario consistent with observation, they had to introduce a phase of thermal inflation. In this paper we have analysed this model in the braneworld scenario to show that for some choice of the parameters defining the model class, one can have an observationally consistent power law plateau without any phase of thermal inflation. We have also shown that, for the correct choice of model parameters, one can easily satisfy the Swampland criterion. Besides, for a particular choice of the potential one can also satisfy the recently proposed Trans-Planckian Censorship Conjecture.

A scalar potential obtained from the $D$-term in the Supergravity models, which dominates over $F$ term and is mainly responsible for the inflationary phase in the early universe, is studied. The potential with canonical kinetic terms for scalar fields in the Lagrangian, has a very slow roll feature in comparison to various other plateau type inflationary potentials. In this case, a much lower tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$) of $\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$ is achievable. The requirement of slow roll condition for the inflation potential implies that the up type neutral scalar and the down type neutral scalar in Supergravity models are with equal field strength at the time of inflation. If this relationship holds down to the electroweak scale for the corresponding $vev$ values of these fields, then it will indicate a higher SUSY breaking scale around 100 TeV. The predicted values of the inflationary observables are well within the 1-$σ$ bounds of the recent constraints from {\it Planck'18} observations. The era of reheating after the inflationary phase, is also studied and the bounds on the reheating temperature ($T_{re}$) is calculated for a different equation of states during reheating ($w_{re}$) for the {\it Planck'18} allowed values of the scalar spectral index ($n_s$). For our model with $w_{re}=2/3$ and $w_{re}=1$, after satisfying all the bounds due to gravitino overproduction, we can have big parameter space for $T_{re}$ which is well inside {\it Planck'18} 1-$σ$ bound on $n_s$.

We also establish that the $3$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of a complete $3$-uniform hypergraph having $n \geq 9$ vertices is at least $\dfrac{43}{42}\dbinom{n}{6}$.
We prove that the maximum number of crossing pairs of hyperedges in a $4$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of the complete $4$-uniform hypergraph having $n$ vertices is $13\dbinom{n}{8}$. We also prove that among all $4$-dimensional rectilinear drawings of a complete $4$-uniform hypergraph having $n$ vertices, the number of crossing pairs of hyperedges is maximized if all its vertices are placed at the vertices of a $4$-dimensional neighborly polytope. Our result proves the conjecture by Anshu et al. [Anshu, Gangopadhyay, Shannigrahi, and Vusirikala, 2017] for $d=4$.
We prove that the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of a complete $d$-partite $d$-uniform balanced hypergraph is $(2^{d-1}-1){\dbinom{n}{2}}^d$. We then prove that finding the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of an arbitrary $d$-uniform hypergraph is NP-hard.
We give a randomized scheme to create a $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of a $d$-uniform hypergraph $H$ such that, in expectation the total number of crossing pairs of hyperedges is a constant fraction of the maximum $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of $H$.

We analyse the epoch of reheating after an inflationary phase in the Randal Sundrum(RS) Type-$\rm II$ braneworld, where we did not consider any particular model of inflation, but rather reconstructed the inflationary potential solving the flow equations using Monte Carlo (MC) approach. It is shown numerically that a potential conceived through the MC reconstruction technique can be represented by an effective potential as a function of the number of e-foldings($N$). Then, the epoch of reheating is studied for this reconstructed potential. The relation between the reheating temperature ($T_{\rm reh}$) and the 5-dimensional Planck mass($M_5$) is established. Moreover, it is argued that there is a stringent bound on the critical reheating temperature that also translates to a tight bound on $M_5$ .

Recent observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) indicate that a successful theory of cosmological inflation needs to have flat potential of the inflaton scalar field. Realizing the inflaton to be a pseudo-Nambu Goldstone boson (pNGB) could ensure the flatness and the sub-Planckian scales related to the dynamics of the paradigm. In this work, we have taken the most general form of such a scenario: Goldstone inflation, and studied the model in the noncanonical domain. Natural inflation is a limiting case of this model, which is also studied here in the noncanonical regime. Our result is compared with the recent release by Planck collaboration and it is shown that for some combination of the model parameters, a Goldstone inflationary model in the noncanonical realisation obeys the current observational bounds. Then, we studied the era of reheating after the end of inflation. For different choice of model parameters, constraints on the reheating temperature ($T_{\rm re}$) and number of e-folds during reheating($N_{\rm re}$) for the allowed inflationary observables (e.g. scalar spectral index($n_s$) and tensor to scalar ratio($r$)) are predicted for this model.

We present an exquisite, 30-min cadence Kepler (K2) light curve of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2018oh (ASASSN-18bt), starting weeks before explosion, covering the moment of explosion and the subsequent rise, and continuing past peak brightness. These data are supplemented by multi-color Pan-STARRS1 and CTIO 4-m DECam observations obtained within hours of explosion. The K2 light curve has an unusual two-component shape, where the flux rises with a steep linear gradient for the first few days, followed by a quadratic rise as seen for typical SNe Ia. This "flux excess" relative to canonical SN Ia behavior is confirmed in our $i$-band light curve, and furthermore, SN 2018oh is especially blue during the early epochs. The flux excess peaks 2.14$\pm0.04$ days after explosion, has a FWHM of 3.12$\pm0.04$ days, a blackbody temperature of $T=17,500^{+11,500}_{-9,000}$ K, a peak luminosity of $4.3\pm0.2\times10^{37}\,{\rm erg\,s^{-1}}$, and a total integrated energy of $1.27\pm0.01\times10^{43}\,{\rm erg}$. We compare SN 2018oh to several models that may provide additional heating at early times, including collision with a companion and a shallow concentration of radioactive nickel. While all of these models generally reproduce the early K2 light curve shape, we slightly favor a companion interaction, at a distance of $\sim$$2\times10^{12}\,{\rm cm}$ based on our early color measurements, although the exact distance depends on the uncertain viewing angle. Additional confirmation of a companion interaction in future modeling and observations of SN 2018oh would provide strong support for a single-degenerate progenitor system.

Supernova (SN) 2018oh (ASASSN-18bt) is the first spectroscopically-confirmed type Ia supernova (SN Ia) observed in the $Kepler$ field. The $Kepler$ data revealed an excess emission in its early light curve, allowing to place interesting constraints on its progenitor system (Dimitriadis et al. 2018, Shappee et al. 2018b). Here, we present extensive optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared photometry, as well as dense sampling of optical spectra, for this object. SN 2018oh is relatively normal in its photometric evolution, with a rise time of 18.3$\pm$0.3 days and $Δ$m$_{15}(B)=0.96\pm$0.03 mag, but it seems to have bluer $B - V$ colors. We construct the "uvoir" bolometric light curve having peak luminosity as 1.49$\times$10$^{43}$erg s$^{-1}$, from which we derive a nickel mass as 0.55$\pm$0.04M$_{\odot}$ by fitting radiation diffusion models powered by centrally located $^{56}$Ni. Note that the moment when nickel-powered luminosity starts to emerge is +3.85 days after the first light in the Kepler data, suggesting other origins of the early-time emission, e.g., mixing of $^{56}$Ni to outer layers of the ejecta or interaction between the ejecta and nearby circumstellar material or a non-degenerate companion star. The spectral evolution of SN 2018oh is similar to that of a normal SN Ia, but is characterized by prominent and persistent carbon absorption features. The C II features can be detected from the early phases to about 3 weeks after the maximum light, representing the latest detection of carbon ever recorded in a SN Ia. This indicates that a considerable amount of unburned carbon exists in the ejecta of SN 2018oh and may mix into deeper layers.

On 2018 Feb. 4.41, the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) discovered ASASSN-18bt in the K2 Campaign 16 field. With a redshift of z=0.01098 and a peak apparent magnitude of B_{max}=14.31, ASASSN-18bt is the nearest and brightest SNe Ia yet observed by the Kepler spacecraft. Here we present the discovery of ASASSN-18bt, the K2 light curve, and pre-discovery data from ASAS-SN and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS). The K2 early-time light curve has an unprecedented 30-minute cadence and photometric precision for an SN~Ia light curve, and it unambiguously shows a ~4 day nearly linear phase followed by a steeper rise. Thus, ASASSN-18bt joins a growing list of SNe Ia whose early light curves are not well described by a single power law. We show that a double-power-law model fits the data reasonably well, hinting that two physical processes must be responsible for the observed rise. However, we find that current models of the interaction with a non-degenerate companion predict an abrupt rise and cannot adequately explain the initial, slower linear phase. Instead, we find that existing, published models with shallow 56Ni are able to span the observed behavior and, with tuning, may be able to reproduce the ASASSN-18bt light curve. Regardless, more theoretical work is needed to satisfactorily model this and other early-time SNe~Ia light curves. Finally, we use Swift X-ray non-detections to constrain the presence of circumstellar material (CSM) at much larger distances and lower densities than possible with the optical light curve. For a constant density CSM these non-detections constrain rho<4.5 * 10^5 cm^-3 at a radius of 4 *10^15 cm from the progenitor star. Assuming a wind-like environment, we place mass-loss limits of Mdot< 8 * 10^-6 M_sun yr^-1 for v_w=100 km s^-1, ruling out some symbiotic progenitor systems.

We assume that the set of vertices is partitioned into $d$ disjoint sets, each of size $n$, such that each of the vertices in a hyperedge is from a different set. Two hyperedges are said to be crossing if they are vertex disjoint and contain a common point in their relative interiors. Using the Generalized Colored Tverberg Theorem, we observe that such an embedding of a complete balanced $d$-partite $d$-uniform hypergraph with $nd$ vertices contains $Ω\left((8/3)^{d/2}\right){\left({n/2}\right)^d{\left((n-1)/2\right)}^d}$ crossing pairs of hyperedges for sufficiently large $n$ and $d$. This effect leads to a modification in the number of $e$-foldings ($N_{\rm pivot}$) between horizon exit of the CMB modes and the end of inflation. Taking Kähler moduli inflation as a prototype, the shift in $e$-foldings turns out to be a function of the model parameters which also determines the inflationary observables. We analyse this scenario numerically using publicly available {\sc{ModeChord}} and {\sc{CosmoMC}} with the latest \emph{Planck+BICEP2/Keck array} data to constrain the model parameters and $N_{\rm pivot}$. We summarize the derivation of the finite temperature, finite chemical potential thermodynamic potential in the bag-model approximation to quantum chromodynamics (QCD) that includes a finite $s$-quark mass in the Feynman diagram contributions for both zero-order and two-loop corrections to the quark interaction. The thermodynamic potential for quarks in QCD is a desired ingredient for computations of the equation of state in the early universe, supernovae, neutron stars, and heavy-ion collisions. The 2-loop contributions are normally divergent and become even more difficult in the limit of finite quark masses and finite chemical potential. We introduce various means to interpolate between the low and high chemical potential limits. Although physically well motivated, we show that the infinite series Padé rational polynomial interpolation scheme introduces spurious poles. Nevertheless, we show that lower order interpolation schemes such as polynomial interpolation reproduce the Padé result without the presence of spurious poles. We propose that in this way one can determine the equation of state for the two-loop corrections for arbitrary chemical potential, temperature and quark mass. This provides a new realistic bag-model treatment of the QCD equation of state. We compute the QCD phase diagram with up to the two-loop corrections. We show that the two-loop corrections decrease the pressure of the quark-gluon plasma and therefore increase the critical temperature and chemical potential of the phase transition. We also show, however, that the correction for finite $s$-quark mass in the two-loop correction serves to decrease the critical temperature for the quark-hadron phase transition in the early universe.

We confront the warm inflation observational predictions directly with the latest CMB data. We focus on a linear temperature (T) dissipative coefficient combined with the simplest model of inflation, a quartic chaotic potential. Although excluded in its standard cold inflation version, dissipation reduces the tensor-to-scalar ratio and brings the quartic chaotic model within the observable allowed range. We will use the CosmoMC package to derive constraints on the model parameters: the combination of coupling constants giving rise to dissipation, the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom contributing to the thermal bath, and the quartic coupling in the inflaton potential. We do not assume a priori a power-law primordial spectrum, neither we fix the no. of e-folds at the horizon exit. The relation between the no. of e-folds and the comoving scale at horizon crossing is derived from the dynamics, depending on the parameters of the model, which allows us to obtain the $k$-dependent primordial power spectrum. We study the two possibilities considered in the literature for the spectrum, with the inflaton fluctuations having a thermal or a non-thermal origin, and discuss the ability of the data to constraint the model parameters.

The term dark radiation is used both to describe a noninteracting neutrino species and as a correction to the Friedmann Equation in the simplest five-dimensional RS-II brane-world cosmology. In this paper we consider the constraints on both meanings of dark radiation based upon the newest results for light-element nuclear reaction rates, observed light-element abundances and the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Adding dark radiation during big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) alters the Friedmann expansion rate causing the nuclear reactions to freeze out at a different temperature. This changes the final light element abundances at the end of BBN. Its influence on the CMB is to change the effective expansion rate at the surface of last scattering. We find that the BBN constraint reduces the allowed range for both types of dark radiation at 10 Mev to between $-12.1\%$ and $+6.2\%$ of the {\bf total} background energy density at 10 Mev. Combining this result with fits to the CMB power spectrum, produces different results for particle vs. brane-world dark radiation. In the brane-world, the range decreases to $-6.0\%$ to $+6.2\%$. Thus, we find, that the ratio of dark radiation to the background total relativistic mass energy density $ρ_{\rm DR}/ρ$ is consistent with zero although there remains a very slight preference for a positive (rather than negative) contribution.

We explore the possibility that both the suppression of the $\ell = 2$ multipole moment of the power spectrum of cosmic microwave background temperature fluctuations and the possible dip for $\ell = 10-30$ can be explained as well as a possible new dip for $\ell \approx 60$ as the result of the resonant creation of sequential excitations of a fermionic (or bosonic) closed superstring that couples…

We explore the possibility that both the suppression of the $\ell = 2$ multipole moment of the power spectrum of cosmic microwave background temperature fluctuations and the possible dip for $\ell = 10-30$ can be explained as well as a possible new dip for $\ell \approx 60$ as the result of the resonant creation of sequential excitations of a fermionic (or bosonic) closed superstring that couples to the inflaton field. We consider a D=26 closed bosonic string with one toroidal compact dimension as an illustration of how string excitations might imprint themselves on the CMB. We analyze the existence of successive momentum states, winding states or oscillations on the string as the source of the three possible dips in the power spectrum. Although the evidence of these dips are of marginal statistical significance, this might constitute the first observational evidence of successive superstring excitations in Nature.

We analyze the Randal Sundrum brane-world inflation scenario in the context of the latest CMB constraints from Planck. We summarize constraints on the most popular classes of models and explore some more realistic inflaton effective potentials. The constraint on standard inflationary parameters changes in the brane-world scenario. We confirm that in general the brane-world scenario increases the tensor-to-scalar ratio, thus making this paradigm less consistent with the Planck constraints. Indeed, when the BICEP2/Keck constraints are included, all monomial potentials in the brane-world scenario become disfavored compared to the standard scenario. However, for natural inflation the brane-world scenario fits the constraints better due to larger allowed values of the number of e-foldings N before the end of inflation in the brane-world.

Adding dark radiation during big bang nucleosynthesis alters the Friedmann expansion rate causing the nuclear reactions to freeze out at a different temperature. This changes the final light element abundances at the end of BBN. Its influence on the CMB is to change the effective expansion rate at the surface of last scattering. We find that our adopted BBN constraints reduce the allowed range for dark radiation to between $-12.1\%$ and $+6.2\%$ of the ambient background energy density. Combining this result with fits to the CMB power spectrum, the range decreases to $-6.0\%$ to $+6.2\%$. Thus, we find, that the ratio of dark radiation to the background total relativistic mass energy density $ρ_{\rm DR}/ρ$ is consistent with zero although in the BBN analysis there could be a slight preference for a negative contribution. However, the BBN constraint depends strongly upon the adopted primordial helium abundance.

The power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background from both the {\it Planck} and {\it WMAP} data exhibits a slight dip for multipoles in the range of $l= 10-30$. We show that such a dip could be the result of the resonant creation of massive particles that couple to the inflaton field. For our best-fit models, the epoch of resonant particle creation reenters the horizon at a wave number of $k_* \sim 0.0011 \pm 0.0004 $ ($h$ Mpc$^{-1}$). The amplitude and location of this feature corresponds to the creation of a number of degenerate fermion species of mass $\sim (8-11) /λ^{3/2} $ $m_{pl}$ during inflation where $λ\sim (1.0 \pm 0.5) N^{-2/5}$ is the coupling constant between the inflaton field and the created fermion species, while $N$ is the number of degenerate species. Although the evidence is of marginal statistical significance, this could constitute new observational hints of unexplored physics beyond the Planck scale

In this paper, we consider a generalized version of the rectilinear crossing number problem of drawing complete graphs on a plane. The minimum number of crossing pairs of hyperedges in the $d$-dimensional rectilinear drawing of a $d$-uniform hypergraph is known as the $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of the hypergraph. The currently best-known lower bound on the $d$-dimensional rectilinear crossing number of a complete $d$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is $Ω(\frac{2^d}{\sqrt{d}} \log d) {n \choose 2d}$. In this paper, we improve this lower bound to $Ω(2^d) {n \choose 2d}$. We also consider the special case when all the vertices of a $d$-uniform hypergraph are placed on the $d$-dimensional moment curve. For such complete $d$-uniform hypergraphs with $n$ vertices, we show that the number of pairwise crossing hyperedges is $Θ(\frac{4^d}{\sqrt{d}}) {n \choose 2d}$.

We consider two means to explain a slight dip in the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background for multipoles in the range of $\ell= 10-30$ from both the {\it Planck} and {\it WMAP} data. We show that such a dip could be the result of resonant creation of a massive particle that couples to the inflaton field. For best-fit models, the epoch of resonant particle creation reenters the horizon at wave numbers of $k_* \sim 0.00011 \pm 0.0004 $ ($h$ Mpc$^{-1}$). The amplitude and location of these features correspond to the creation of a number of degenerate fermion species of mass $\sim 15/λ^{3/2} $ $m_{pl}$ during inflation where $λ$ is the coupling constant between the inflaton field and the created fermion species. Alternatively, one can explain the existence of such a dip as due to a jump in the inflation generating potential. We show that such a jump can also resolve the excessively large dark flow predicted from the M-theory landscape. Finally, we summarize our efforts to quantify constraints on the cosmic dark flow from a new analysis of the Type Ia supernova distance-redshift relation.

The amplitude and location of these features correspond to the creation of a number of degenerate fermion species of mass ~ 15 times the planck mass during inflation with a coupling constant between the inflaton field and the created fermion species of near unity. Although the evidence is marginal, if this interpretation is correct, this could be one of the first observational hints of new physics at the Planck scale.
