The G31.41+0.31 (G31) hot molecular core (HMC) is a high-mass protocluster showing accelerated infall and rotational spin-up that is well studied at high-angular resolution. To complement the accurate view of the small scale in G31, we have traced the kinematics of the large-scale material by carrying out N$_2$H$^+$\,(1--0) observations with the IRAM 30m telescope of an area of $\sim$6$\times6$\,arcmin$^2$ around the HMC. The N$_2$H$^+$ observations have revealed a large-scale (5\,pc) hub-filament system (HFS) composed by at least four filamentary arms and a NNE--SSW velocity gradient ($\sim$0.4\,km/s/pc) between the northern and southern filaments. The linewidth increases towards the hub at the center of the HFS reaching values of 2.5--3\,km\,s$^{-1}$ in the central 1\,pc. The origin of the large-scale velocity gradient is likely cloud-cloud collision. In this scenario, the filaments in G31 would have formed by compression resulting from the collision and the rotation of the HMC observed at scales of 1000\,au would have been induced by shear caused by the cloud-cloud collision at scales of a few pc. We conclude that G31 represents a HFS in a compressed layer with an orthogonal orientation to the plane of the sky, and represents a benchmark for the filaments-to-clusters paradigm of star formation.

We consider extensions of non-singular maps which are exact, respectively K-mixing, or at least have a decomposition into positive-measure exact, respectively K-mixing, components. The fibers of the extension spaces have countable (finite or infinite) cardinality and the action on them is assumed surjective or bijective. We call these systems, respectively, fiber-surjective and fiber-bijective extensions. Technically, they are skew products, though the point of view we take here is not the one generally associated with skew products. Our main results are an Exact and a K-mixing Decomposition Theorem. The latter can be used to show that a large number of periodic Lorentz gases (the term denoting here general group extensions of Sinai billiards, including Lorentz tubes and slabs, in any dimension) are K-mixing.

The first study of the angular distribution of $μ^+ μ^-$ pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction $pp \rightarrow γ^{*}/Z +X \rightarrow l^+ l^- + X$ is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the $Z$-boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton.

Pre-stellar cores represent the initial conditions in the process of star and planet formation. Their low temperatures ($<$10 K) allow the formation of thick icy dust mantles, which will be partially preserved in the future protoplanetary disks, ultimately affecting the chemical composition of planetary systems. Previous observations have shown that carbon- and oxygen-bearing species, in particular CO, are heavily depleted in pre-stellar cores due to the efficient molecular freeze-out onto the surface of cold dust grains. However, N-bearing species such as NH$_3$ and, in particular, its deuterated isotopologues, appear to maintain high abundances where CO molecules are mainly in solid phase. Thanks to ALMA, we present here the first clear observational evidence of NH$_2$D freeze-out toward the L1544 pre-stellar core, suggestive of the presence of a"complete-depletion zone" within a $\simeq$1800 au radius, in agreement with astrochemical pre-stellar core model predictions. Our state-of-the-art chemical model coupled with a non-LTE radiative transfer code demonstrates that NH$_2$D becomes mainly incorporated in icy mantles in the central 2000 au and starts freezing-out already at $\simeq$7000 au. Radiative transfer effects within the pre-stellar core cause the NH$_2$D(1$_{11}$-1$_{01}$) emission to appear centrally concentrated, with a flattened distribution within the central $\simeq$3000 au, unlike the 1.3 mm dust continuum emission which shows a clear peak within the central $\simeq$1800 au. This prevented NH$_2$D freeze-out to be detected in previous observations, where the central 1000 au cannot be spatially resolved.

Quantum simulations of the hydroxide anion and hydroxyl radical are reported, employing variational quantum algorithms for near-term quantum devices. The energy of each species is calculated along the dissociation curve, to obtain information about the stability of the molecular species being investigated. It is shown that simulations restricted to valence spaces incorrectly predict the hydroxyl radical to be more stable than the hydroxide anion. Inclusion of dynamical electron correlation from non-valence orbitals is demonstrated, through the integration of the variational quantum eigensolver and quantum subspace expansion methods in the workflow of N-electron valence perturbation theory, and shown to correctly predict the hydroxide anion to be more stable than the hydroxyl radical, provided that basis sets with diffuse orbitals are also employed. Finally, we calculate the electron affinity of the hydroxyl radical using an aug-cc-pVQZ basis on IBM's quantum devices.

The application of quantum algorithms to the study of many-particle quantum systems requires the ability to prepare wavefunctions that are relevant in the behavior of the system under study. Hamiltonian symmetries are an important instrument, to classify relevant many-particle wavefunctions, and to improve the efficiency of numerical simulations. In this work, quantum circuits for the exact and approximate preparation of total spin eigenfunctions on quantum computers are presented. Two different strategies are discussed and compared: exact recursive construction of total spin eigenfunctions based on the addition theorem of angular momentum, and heuristic approximation of total spin eigenfunctions based on the variational optimization of a suitable cost function. The construction of these quantum circuits is illustrated in detail, and the preparation of total spin eigenfunctions is demonstrated on IBM quantum devices, focusing on 3- and 5-spin systems on graphs with triangle connectivity.

The combination of the two measurements is $y_{CP} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.96 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-3}$, which is four times more precise than the previous world average.

Context. To better understand the formation of high-mass stars, it is fundamental to investigate how matter accretes onto young massive stars, how it is ejected, and how all this differs from the low-mass case. The massive protocluster G31.41+0.31 is the ideal target to study all these processes because observations at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths have resolved the emission of the Main core into at least four massive dust continuum sources, named A, B, C, and D, within 1" or 0.018 pc, and have identified signatures of infall and several outflows associated with the core. Aims. We study the interplay between infall and outflow in G31.41+0.31 by investigating at a spatial resolution of a few 100 au their properties and their possible impact on the core. Methods. We carried out molecular line observations of typical high-density tracers, such as CH3CN or H2CO, and shock and outflow tracers, such as SiO, with ALMA at 1.4 mm that achieved an angular resolution of 0.09" (340 au). Results. The observations have revealed inverse P-Cygni profiles in CH3CN and H2CO toward the four sources embedded in the Main core, suggesting that all of them are undergoing collapse. The infall rates, estimated from the red-shifted absorption are on the order of 1E-2 Msun/yr. The individual infall rates imply that the accretion timescale of the Main core is an order of magnitude smaller than its rotation timescale. This confirms that rotating toroids such as the G31 Main core are non-equilibrium, transient collapsing structures that need to be constantly replenished with fresh material from a large-scale reservoir. For sources B, C, and D, the infall could be accelerating inside the sources, while for source A, the presence of a second emission component complicates the interpretation. The SiO observations have revealed the presence of at least six outflows in the G31.41+0.31 star-forming region, ...

Cosmic rays (CRs) at sub-TeV energies play a fundamental role in the chemical and dynamical evolution of molecular clouds, as they control the ionisation, dissociation, and excitation of H$_{2}$. Their characterisation is important both for the interpretation of observations and for the development of theoretical models. The methods used so far for estimating the CR ionisation rate ($ζ$) in molecular clouds have several limitations due to uncertainties in the adopted chemical networks. We refine and extend the method proposed by Bialy (2020) to estimate $ζ$ by observing rovibrational transitions of H$_{2}$ at near-infrared wavelengths, which are mainly excited by secondary CR electrons. Combining models of interstellar CR propagation and attenuation with the calculation of the expected secondary electron spectrum and updated H$_{2}$ excitation cross sections by electron collisions, we derive the intensity of the four H$_{2}$ rovibrational transitions observable in dense, cold gas: (1-0)O(2), (1-0)Q(2), (1-0)S(0), and (1-0)O(4). The proposed method allows the estimation of $ζ$ for a given observed line intensity and H$_{2}$ column density. We are also able to deduce the shape of the low-energy CR proton spectrum im**ing upon the molecular cloud. We present a look-up plot and a web-based application that can be used to constrain the low-energy spectral slope of the interstellar CR proton spectrum. We comment on the capability of the James Webb Space Telescope to detect these near-infrared H$_{2}$ lines, making it possible to derive for the first time spatial variation of $ζ$ in dense gas. Besides the implications for the interpretation of the chemical-dynamic evolution of a molecular cloud, it will be possible to test competing models of CR propagation and attenuation in the interstellar medium, as well as compare CR spectra in different Galactic regions.

The first observation of the semileptonic $b$-baryon decay $ Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ τ^-\overlineν_τ$, with a significance of $6.1\,σ$, is reported using a data sample corresponding to 3 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV at the LHC. The $τ^-$ lepton is reconstructed in the hadronic decay to three charged pions. The branching fraction ${\mathcal{B}}(Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+τ^-\overlineν_τ) = (1.50 \pm 0.16\pm 0.25\pm 0.23)\%$ is obtained, where uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the external branching fraction of the normalisation channel $Λ_b^0\rightarrow Λ_c^+π^-π^+π^-$. The ratio of semileptonic branching fractions ${\mathcal{R}}( Λ_c^+)\equiv {\mathcal{B}}( Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ τ^-\overlineν_τ)/{\mathcal{B}}( Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ μ^-\overlineν_μ)$ is derived to be $0.242 \pm 0.026 \pm 0.040\pm 0.059$, where the external branching fraction uncertainty from the channel $Λ_b^0\rightarrow Λ_c^+μ^-\overlineν_μ$ contributes to the last term. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle $γ$ of the CKM unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of $γ$ from $B^{+}\rightarrow DK^{+}$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow DK^{+}π^{-}$ decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4 ~\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton--proton collision data at $13 ~\rm{TeV}$ centre-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The $\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}$ mesons are fully reconstructed in the $\overline{D}^{0}π^{0}$ and $\overline{D}^{0}γ$ channels, with the $\overline{D}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}$ decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays.

Abstract:
A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$ is used to measure eleven $CP$ violation observables in $B^\pm\to Dh^\pm$ decays, where $h$ is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral $D$ meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: $K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0$}; $π^+π^-π^0$; $K^+K^-π^0$ and the suppressed $π^\pm K^\mpπ^0$ combination. The mode where a large $CP$ asymmetry is expected, $B^\pm\to [π^\pm K^\mpπ^0]_DK^\pm$, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, $B^\pm\to [K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0]_D K^\pm$, is $R_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = (1.27\pm0.16\pm0.02)\times 10^{-2}$. Evidence for a large $CP$ asymmetry is also seen: $A_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = -0.38\pm0.12\pm0.02$. Constraints on the CKM angle $γ$ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

The performance of this method is determined using a dijet calibration dataset recorded by the LHCb detector and selected such that the jets are unbiased in quantities used in the tagging algorithm. The charm-tagging efficiency is reported as a function of the transverse momentum of the jet. The measured efficiencies are compared to those obtained from simulation and found to be in good agreement.

A precision measurement of the $Z$ boson production cross-section at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV in the forward region is presented, using $pp$ collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb$^{-1}$. The production cross-section is measured using $Z\rightarrowμ^+μ^-$ events within the fiducial region defined as pseudorapidity $2.0<η<4.5$ and transverse momentum $p_{T}>20$ GeV/$c$ for both muons and dimuon invariant mass $60<M_{μμ}<120$ GeV/$c^2$. The integrated cross-section is determined to be \begin{equation*} σ(Z\rightarrowμ^+μ^-) = 196.4 \pm 0.2 \pm 1.6 \pm 3.9~pb, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. The measured results are in agreement with theoretical predictions within uncertainties.

A data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $6\;fb^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in $pp$ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $13\;TeV$ is used. The photon polarization is measured to be $α_γ= 0.82^{\,+\,0.17\,+\,0.04}_{\,-\,0.26\,-\,0.13}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This result is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction and previous measurements in b-meson decays. Charge-parity breaking effects are studied for the first time in this observable and found to be consistent with $CP$ symmetry.

Hybrid quantum-classical algorithms based on variational circuits are a promising approach to quantum machine learning problems for near-term devices, but the selection of the variational ansatz is an open issue. Recently, tensor network-inspired circuits have been proposed as a natural choice for such ansatz. Their employment on binary classification tasks provided encouraging results. However, their effectiveness on more difficult tasks is still unknown. Here, we present numerical experiments on multi-class classifiers based on tree tensor network and multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz circuits. We conducted experiments on image classification with the MNIST dataset and on quantum phase recognition with the XXZ model by Cirq and TensorFlow Quantum. In the former case, we reduced the number of classes to four to match the aimed output based on 2 qubits. The quantum data of the XXZ model consist of three classes of ground states prepared by a checkerboard circuit used for the ansatz of the variational quantum eigensolver, corresponding to three distinct quantum phases. Test accuracy turned out to be 59%-93% and 82%-96% respectively, depending on the model architecture and on the type of preprocessing.

A search is performed for massive long-lived particles (LLP) decaying semileptonically into a muon and two quarks. Two kinds of LLP production processes were considered. In the first, a Higgs-like boson with mass from 30 to 200 GeV is produced by gluon fusion and decays into two LLPs. The analysis covers LLP mass values from 10 GeV up to about one half the Higgs-like boson mass. The second LLP production mode is directly from quark interactions, with LLP masses from 10 to 90 GeV. The LLP lifetimes considered range from 5 to 200 ps. This study uses LHCb data collected from proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 1/fb. No evidence of these long-lived states has been observed, and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching ratio have been set for each model considered.

The masses of the ${\itΞ}_b(6327)^0$ and ${\itΞ}_b(6333)^0$ states are $m({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0) = 6327.28 ^{\,+\,0.23}_{\,-\,0.21} \pm 0.12 \pm 0.24~{\rm MeV}$ and $m({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0) = 6332.69 ^{\,+\,0.17}_{\,-\,0.18} \pm 0.03 \pm 0.22~{\rm MeV}$, respectively, with a mass splitting of $Δm = 5.41 ^{\,+\,0.26}_{\,-\,0.27} \pm 0.12 ~{\rm MeV}$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the ${\itΛ}_b^0$ mass measurement. The measured natural widths of these states are consistent with zero, with upper limits of $Γ({\itΞ}_b(6327)^0)<2.20~(2.56) ~{\rm MeV}$ and $Γ({\itΞ}_b(6333)^0)<1.60~(1.92) ~{\rm MeV}$ at a $90\%~(95\%)$ credibility level. The significance of the two-peak hypothesis is larger than nine (five) Gaussian standard deviations compared to the no-peak (one-peak) hypothesis. The masses, widths and resonant structure of the new states are in good agreement with the expectations for a doublet of 1$D$ ${\itΞ}_b^0$ resonances.

A combination of measurements sensitive to the $CP$ violation angle $γ$ of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa unitarity triangle and to the charm mixing parameters that describe oscillations between $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$ mesons is performed. Results from the charm and beauty sectors, based on data collected with the LHCb detector at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, are combined for the first time. This method provides an improvement on the precision of the charm mixing parameter $y$ by a factor of two with respect to the current world average. The charm mixing parameters are determined to be $x = (0.400^{\,+0.052}_{\,-0.053})\%$ and $y = (0.630^{\,+0.033}_{\,-0.030})\%$. The angle $γ$ is found to be $γ= (65.4^{\,+3.8}_{\,-4.2})^\circ$ and is the most precise determination from a single experiment.

Context. Cosmic rays (CRs) play an important role in the chemistry and dynamics of the interstellar medium. In dense environments, they represent the main ionising agent, driving the rich chemistry of molecular ions and determining the ionisation fraction, which regulates the degree of coupling between the gas and magnetic fields. Estimates of the CR ionisation rate ($ζ_2$) span several orders of magnitude, depending on the targeted sources and on the used method.
Aims. Recent theoretical models have characterised the CR attenuation with increasing density. We aim to test these models for the attenuation of CRs in the low-mass pre-stellar core L1544.
Methods. We use a state-of-the-art gas-grain chemical model, which accepts the CR ionisation rate profile as input, to predict the abundance profiles of four ions: $\rm N_2H^+$, $\rm N_2D^+$, $\rm HC^{18}O^+$, and $\rm DCO^+$. Non-LTE radiative transfer is performed to produce synthetic spectra based on the derived abundances. These are compared with observations obtained with the Institut de Radioastronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) 30m telescope.
Results. Our results indicate that a model with $ζ_2 > 10^{-16} \rm \, s^{-1}$ is excluded by the observations. Also the model with the standard $ζ_2 = 1.3 \times 10^{-17} \rm \, s^{-1}$ produces a worse agreement with respect to the attenuation model based on Voyager observations, which has an average $ζ_2 = 3 \times 10^{-17} \rm \, s^{-1}$ at the column densities typical of L1544. The single-dish data, however, are not sensitive to the attenuation of the CR profile, which changes only by a factor of two in the range of column densities spanned by the core model. Interferometric observations at higher spatial resolution, combined with observations of transitions with lower critical density are needed to observe a decrease of $ζ_2$ with density.

In events with a $Z$ boson and a jet, the fraction of charm jets is determined in intervals of $Z$-boson rapidity in the range $2.0 < y(Z) < 4.5$. A sizable enhancement is observed in the forward-most $y(Z)$ interval, which could be indicative of a valence-like intrinsic-charm component in the proton wave function.

The two mesons are reconstructed in the $J/ψπ^{+}π^{-}$ final state. The ratios of the prompt and nonprompt $χ_{c1}(3872)$ to $ψ(2S)$ production cross-sections are measured as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and rapidity, $y$, in the kinematic range $4 < p_{\rm T} < 20$ GeV/$c$ and $2.0 < y < 4.5$. The prompt ratio is found to increase with $p_{\rm T}$ independently of $y$. The double-differential cross-section ratio of $χ_{c1}(3872)$ relative to $ψ(2S)$ mesons between 13 and 8 TeV is also measured for the prompt component and observed to be consistent with unity, independent of $p_{\rm T}$ and centre-of-mass energy.

A search for the doubly charmed baryon $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ is performed in the $\itΞ_{c}^{+} π^{-} π^{+}$ invariant-mass spectrum, where the $\itΞ_{c}^{+}$ baryon is reconstructed in the $p K^{-} π^{+}$ final state. The study uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13$\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}$, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 5.4$\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed in the invariant-mass range of 3.4$-$3.8$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$. Upper limits are set on the ratio of branching fractions multiplied by the production cross-section with respect to the $\itΞ_{cc}^{++} \rightarrow (\itΞ_{c}^{+} \rightarrow p K^{-} π^{+}) π^{+}$ decay for different $\itΞ_{cc}^{+}$ mass and lifetime hypotheses in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and the transverse momentum range from 2.5 to 25$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c$. The results from this search are combined with a previously published search for the $\itΞ_{cc}^{+} \rightarrow \itΛ_{c}^{+} K^{-} π^{+}$ decay mode, yielding a maximum local significance of 4.0 standard deviations around the mass of 3620$\mathrm{\,Me\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$, including systematic uncertainties. Taking into account the look-elsewhere effect in the 3.5$-$3.7$\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}/c^2$ mass window, the combined global significance is 2.9 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties.

Rubik's Cube is one of the most famous combinatorial puzzles involving nearly $4.3 \times 10^{19}$ possible configurations. Its mathematical description is expressed by the Rubik's group, whose elements define how its layers rotate. We develop a unitary representation of such group and a quantum formalism to describe the Cube from its geometrical constraints. Cubies are describedby single particle states which turn out to behave like bosons for corners and fermions for edges, respectively. When in its solved configuration, the Cube, as a geometrical object, shows symmetrieswhich are broken when driven away from this configuration. For each of such symmetries, we build a Hamiltonian operator. When a Hamiltonian lies in its ground state, the respective symmetry of the Cube is preserved. When all such symmetries are preserved, the configuration of the Cube matches the solution of the game. To reach the ground state of all the Hamiltonian operators, we make use of a Deep Reinforcement Learning algorithm based on a Hamiltonian reward. The Cube is solved in four phases, all based on a respective Hamiltonian reward based on its spectrum, inspired by the Ising model. Embedding combinatorial problems into the quantum mechanics formalism suggests new possible algorithms and future implementations on quantum hardware.

The $Ω^{0}_{c}$ and $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ baryons are produced directly from proton interactions and reconstructed in the $pK^{-}K^{-}π^{+}$ final state. The $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime is measured to be $276.5\pm13.4\pm4.4\pm0.7\text{ fs}$, and the $Ξ^{0}_{c}$ lifetime is measured to be $148.0\pm2.3\pm2.2\pm0.2\text{ fs}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to the uncertainty on the $D^{0}$ lifetime. These results confirm previous LHCb measurements based on semileptonic beauty-hadron decays, which disagree with earlier results of a four times shorter $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime, and provide the single most precise measurement of the $Ω^{0}_{c}$ lifetime.

The state is consistent with the ground isoscalar $T^+_{cc}$ tetraquark with a quark content of $cc\bar{u}\bar{d}$ and spin-parity quantum numbers $\mathrm{J}^{\mathrm{P}}=1^+$. Study of the $DD$ mass spectra disfavours interpretation of the resonance as the isovector state. The decay structure via intermediate off-shell $D^{*+}$ mesons is confirmed by the $D^0π^+$ mass distribution. The mass of the resonance and its coupling to the $D^{*}D$ system are analysed. Resonance parameters including the pole position, scattering length, effective range and compositeness are measured to reveal important information about the nature of the $T^+_{cc}$ state. In addition, an unexpected dependence of the production rate on track multiplicity is observed.

The production cross-sections of $J/ψ$ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=5$ TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9.13\pm0.18~\text{pb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, $p_{\text{T}}$, and rapidity, $y$, and separately for $J/ψ$ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised $J/ψ$ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range $0<p_{\text{T}}<20~\text{GeV}/c$ and $2.0<y<4.5$ are $8.154\pm0.010\pm0.283~μ\text{b}$ for prompt $J/ψ$ mesons and $0.820\pm0.003\pm0.034~μ\text{b}$ for nonprompt $J/ψ$ mesons, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV and $13$ TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for $J/ψ$ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5$ TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.

The production of prompt charged particles in proton-lead collisions and in proton-proton collisions at the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy ${\sqrt{s_{\scriptscriptstyle\mathrm{NN}}}=5\,\mathrm{TeV}}$ is studied at LHCb as a function of pseudorapidity ($η$) and transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}$) with respect to the proton beam direction. The nuclear modification factor for charged particles is determined as a function of $η$ between ${-4.8<η<-2.5}$ (backward region) and ${2.0<η<4.8}$ (forward region), and $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ between ${0.2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<8.0\,\mathrm{GeV}/c}$. The results show a suppression of charged particle production in proton-lead collisions relative to proton-proton collisions in the forward region and an enhancement in the backward region for $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ larger than $1.5\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$. This measurement constrains nuclear PDFs and saturation models at previously unexplored values of the parton momentum fraction down to $10^{-6}$.

The branching fraction ${\mathcal{B}}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=\left(3.09^{+0.46+0.15}_{-0.43-0.11}\right)\times 10^{-9}$ and the effective lifetime $τ(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-)=(2.07\pm 0.29\pm 0.03)$ are measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant signal for $B^0\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ$ decays is found and upper limits $\mathcal{B}(B^0\toμ^+μ^-)<2.6\times 10^{-10}$ and $\mathcal{B}(B^0_s\toμ^+μ^-γ)<2.0\times 10^{-9}$ at the 95% CL are determined, where the latter is limited to the range $m_{μμ} > 4.9$ GeV$/c^2$. The results are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

This article presents differential measurements of the asymmetry between $Λ_b^0$ and $\overlineΛ_b^0$ baryon production rates in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,\textrm{TeV}$ collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}$. The $Λ_b^0$ baryons are reconstructed through the inclusive semileptonic decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrowΛ_c^+μ^-\overlineν_μX$. The production asymmetry is measured both in intervals of rapidity in the range $2.15<y<4.10$ and transverse momentum in $2<p_T<27\,\textrm{GeV}/c$. The results are found to be incompatible with symmetric production with a significance of 5.8 standard deviations for both $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8\,\textrm{TeV}$ data, assuming no $C\!P$ violation in the decay. There is evidence for a trend as a function of rapidity with a significance of 4 standard deviations. Comparisons to predictions from hadronisation models in PYTHIA and heavy-quark recombination are provided. This result constitutes the first observation of a particle-antiparticle asymmetry in $b$-hadron production at LHC energies.

Four excited $Ω_c^0$ baryons are observed in the $Ξ_c^+ K^-$ mass projection of the $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ decays with the significance of each exceeding five standard deviations. They coincide with the states previously observed in prompt \proton\proton and $e^+e^-$ production. Relative production rates, masses and natural widths of the states are measured, and a test of spin hypotheses is performed. Moreover, the branching ratio of $Ω_b^- \to Ξ_c^+ K^- π^-$ is measured relative to the $Ω_b^- \to Ω_c^0 π^-$ decay mode and a precise measurement of the $Ω_b^-$ mass of \mbox{$6044.3 \pm 1.2 \pm 1.1^{\,+0.19}_{\,-0.22}\,\mathrm{MeV}$} is obtained.
