Atomic and molecular layer deposition (ALD/MLD) coatings are promising solutions for preventing dendrite formation in aqueous and non-aqueous Li/Na/Zn metal batteries. Notably, alumina and alucone coatings have emerged as highly effective against dendrite formation in Zn anodes. Despite their demonstrated efficacy, a comprehensive understanding of their chemo-mechanical impact on anodes remains elusive. In this study, we take a bottom-up framework to these coatings on Zn foils, employing an approach that integrates \textit{ab initio} simulations with continuum theories to elucidate lattice misfit and chemical bonding. We use this insight to develop a macroscopic model to predict the epitaxial residual stresses generated during thin-film deposition. Our findings reveal a robust chemical bonding between the hydroxylated Zn surface and the thin film. This, in turn, generates large misfit strains that result in significant interfacial stresses during deposition. These results are then compared to experiments by measuring the curvature of the coated thin films, finding good agreement between experiments and theory. This novel understanding sheds light on the fundamental mechanisms underpinning the development of chemo-mechanical stresses in thin films, which impact dendrite suppression in anodes, offering valuable insights for the design of new coatings.

Aqueous zinc (Zn)-ion batteries (AZIB) are promising candidates for the next-generation energy store systems due to their high capacity and low cost. Despite their nominal performance, Zn anodes tend to rapidly develop dendrite and fracture, leading to substantial capacity loss and cycling stability failure. Well-controlled coating using organic-inorganic hybrid molecules is highly promising to substantially improve their chemo-mechanical stability without compromising their performance. We herein present a critical assessment of the chemical and mechanical stability of alucone-coated Zn surfaces using first-principles simulations. Negative adsorption energies indicate strong cohesive strengths between alucone and the selected Zn surfaces. Energetically favorable alucone coatings are further verified by charge transfer at interfaces as seen through Bader charge analysis. Negative surface stress profiles at alucone coated interface are mostly responsible for surface reconstruction. The contributions of surface elastic constants are dependent on the selection of slip planes and the thickness of the thin film. By considering plane stress conditions, we calculate the mechanical properties which indicate the ductility of the alucone-coated basal thin film.

As the demand for high-performance microprocessors increases, the circuit complexity and the rate of data transfer increases resulting in higher power consumption. We propose a clocking architecture that uses a series LC resonance and inductor matching technique to address this bottleneck. By employing pulsed resonance, the switching power dissipated is recycled back. The inductor matching technique aids in reducing the skew, increasing the robustness of the clock network. This new resonant architecture saves over 43% power and 91% skew clocking a range of 1--5 GHz, compared to a conventional primary-secondary flip-flop-based CMOS architecture.

By adopting a perspective informed by contemporary liquid state theory, we consider how to train an artificial neural network potential to describe inhomogeneous, disordered systems. We find that neural network potentials based on local representations of atomic environments are capable of describing some properties of liquid-vapor interfaces, but typically fail for properties that depend on unbalanced long-ranged interactions which build up in the presence of broken translation symmetry. These same interactions cancel in the translationally invariant bulk, allowing local neural network potentials to describe bulk properties correctly. By incorporating explicit models of the slowly-varying long-ranged interactions and training neural networks only on the short ranged components, we can arrive at potentials that robustly recover interfacial properties. We find that local neural network models can sometimes approximate a local molecular field potential to correct for the truncated interactions, but this behavior is variable and hard to learn. Generally, we find that models with explicit electrostatics are easier to train and have higher accuracy. We demonstrate this perspective in a simple model of an asymmetric dipolar fluid where the exact long-ranged interaction is known, and in an ab initio water model where it is approximated.

Accurate building energy prediction is useful in various applications starting from building energy automation and management to optimal storage control. However, vulnerabilities should be considered when designing building energy prediction models, as intelligent attackers can deliberately influence the model performance using sophisticated attack models. These may consequently degrade the prediction accuracy, which may affect the efficiency and performance of the building energy management systems. In this paper, we investigate the impact of bi-level poisoning attacks on regression models of energy usage obtained from household appliances. Furthermore, an effective countermeasure against the poisoning attacks on the prediction model is proposed in this paper. Attacks and defenses are evaluated on a benchmark dataset. Experimental results show that an intelligent cyber-attacker can poison the prediction model to manipulate the decision. However, our proposed solution successfully ensures defense against such poisoning attacks effectively compared to other benchmark techniques.

Since the dawn of mankind's introduction to powered flights, there have been multiple incidents which can be attributed to aircraft stalls. Most modern-day aircraft are equipped with advanced warning systems to warn the pilots about a potential stall, so that pilots may adopt the necessary recovery measures. But these warnings often have a short window before the aircraft actually enters a stall and require the pilots to act promptly to prevent it. In this paper, we propose a deep learning based approach to predict an Impending stall, well in advance, even before the stall-warning is triggered. We leverage the capabilities of long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural networks (RNN) and propose a novel approach to predict potential stalls from the sequential in-flight sensor data. Three different neural network architectures were explored. The neural network models, trained on 26400 seconds of simulator flight data are able to predict a potential stall with > 95% accuracy, approximately 10 seconds in advance of the stall-warning trigger. This can significantly augment the Pilot's preparedness to handle an unexpected stall and will add an additional layer of safety to the traditional stall warning systems.

Nearly one third of all nitrogen oxides are removed from the atmosphere through the reactive uptake of N$_2$O$_5$ into aqueous aerosol. The primary step in reactive uptake is the rapid hydrolysis of N$_2$O$_5$, yet despite significant study, the mechanism and rate of this process are unknown. Here we use machine learning-based reactive many body potentials and methods of importance sampling molecular dynamics simulations to study the solvation and subsequent hydrolysis of N$_2$O$_5$. We find that hydrolysis to nitric acid proceeds through the coordinated fluctuation of intramolecular charge separation and solvation, and its characteristic rate is 4.1 ns$^{-1}$, orders of magnitude faster than traditionally assumed. This large rate calls into question standard models of reactive uptake that envision local equilibration between the gas and the bulk solution. We propose an alternative model based on interfacial reactivity that can explain existing experimental observations and is corroborated by explicit simulations.

Drowsiness can put lives of many drivers and workers in danger. It is important to design practical and easy-to-deploy real-world systems to detect the onset of drowsiness. In this paper, we address early drowsiness detection, which can provide early alerts and offer subjects ample time to react. We present a large and public real-life dataset of 60 subjects, with video segments labeled as alert, low vigilant, or drowsy. This dataset consists of around 30 hours of video, with contents ranging from subtle signs of drowsiness to more obvious ones. We also benchmark a temporal model for our dataset, which has low computational and storage demands. The core of our proposed method is a Hierarchical Multiscale Long Short-Term Memory (HM-LSTM) network, that is fed by detected blink features in sequence. Our experiments demonstrate the relationship between the sequential blink features and drowsiness. In the experimental results, our baseline method produces higher accuracy than human judgment.

First principles molecular dynamics simulation protocol is established using revised functional of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (revPBE) in conjunction with Grimme's third generation of dispersion (D3) correction to describe properties of water at ambient conditions. This study also demonstrates the consistency of the structure of water across both isobaric (NpT) and isothermal (NVT) ensembles. Going beyond the standard structural benchmarks for liquid water, we compute properties that are connected to both local structure and mass density uctuations that are related to concepts of solvation and hydrophobicity. We directly compare our revPBE results to the Becke-Lee-Yang-Parr (BLYP) plus Grimme dispersion corrections (D2) and both the empirical fixed charged model (SPC/E) and many body interaction potential model (MB-pol) to further our understanding of how the computed properties herein depend on the form of the interaction potential.
