If we want to transform the quantum of state of a system to another using local processes, what is the probability of success? It turns out that this probability can be bounded by quantifying entanglement within both the states. In this paper, we construct a family of multipartite entanglement measures that are monotonic under local operations and classical communication on average. The measures are constructed out of local unitary invariant polynomials of the state and its conjugate, and hence are easy to compute for pure states. Using these measures we bound the success probability of transforming a given state into another state using local quantum operations and classical communication.

In this paper, we systematically study the measures of multi-partite entanglement with the aim of constructing those measures that can be computed in probe approximation in the holographic dual. We classify and count general measures as invariants of local unitary transformations. After formulating these measures in terms of permutation group elements, we derive conditions that a probe measure should satisfy and find a large class of solutions. These solutions are generalizations of the multi-entropy introduced in arXiv:2206.09723 . We derive their holographic dual with the assumption that the replica symmetry is unbroken in the bulk and check our prescription with explicit computations in $2d$ CFTs. Analogous to the multi-entropy, the holographic dual of these measures is given by the weighted area of the minimal brane-web but with branes having differing tensions. We discuss the replica symmetry assumption and also how the already known entanglement measures, such as entanglement negativity and reflected entropy fit in our framework.

In this paper, we use crossing symmetry and unitarity constraints to put a lower bound on the central charge of conformal field theories in large space-time dimensions $D$. Specifically, we work with the four-point function of identical scalars $φ$ with scaling dimension $Δ_φ$, and use a certain class of analytic functionals to show that the OPE coefficient squared $c^2_{φφT^{μν}}$ must be exponentially small in $D$. For this to hold, we need to make a mild assumption about the nature of the spectrum below $2Δ_φ$. Our argument is robust and can be applied to any OPE coefficient squared $c^2_{φφO}$ with $Δ_O< 2Δ_φ$. This suggests that conformal field theories in large dimensions (if they exist) must be exponentially close to generalized free field theories.

We present an efficient codec-agnostic method for bitrate allocation over a large scale video corpus with the goal of minimizing the average bitrate subject to constraints on average and minimum quality. Our method clusters the videos in the corpus such that videos within one cluster have similar rate-distortion (R-D) characteristics. We train a support vector machine classifier to predict the R-D cluster of a video using simple video complexity features that are computationally easy to obtain. The model allows us to classify a large sample of the corpus in order to estimate the distribution of the number of videos in each of the clusters. We use this distribution to find the optimal encoder operating point for each R-D cluster. Experiments with AV1 encoder show that our method can achieve the same average quality over the corpus with $22\%$ less average bitrate.

In this paper, we classify four-point local gluon S-matrices in arbitrary dimensions. This is along the same lines as \cite{Chowdhury:2019kaq} where four-point local photon S-matrices and graviton S-matrices were classified. We do the classification explicitly for gauge groups $SO(N)$ and $SU(N)$ for all $N$ but our method is easily generalizable to other Lie groups. The construction involves combining not-necessarily-permutation-symmetric four-point S-matrices of photons and those of adjoint scalars into permutation symmetric four-point gluon S-matrix. We explicitly list both the components of the construction, i.e permutation symmetric as well as non-symmetric four point S-matrices, for both the photons as well as the adjoint scalars for arbitrary dimensions and for gauge groups $SO(N)$ and $SU(N)$ for all $N$. In this paper, we explicitly list the local Lagrangians that generate the local gluon S-matrices for $D\geq 9$ and present the relevant counting for lower dimensions. Local Lagrangians for gluon S-matrices in lower dimensions can be written down following the same method. We also express the Yang-Mills four gluon S-matrix with gluon exchange in terms of our basis structures.

We discover a modular property of supersymmetric partition functions of supersymmetric theories with R-symmetry in four dimensions. This modular property is, in a sense, the generalization of the modular invariance of the supersymmetric partition function of two-dimensional supersymmetric theories on a torus i.e. of the elliptic genus. The partition functions in question are on manifolds homeomorphic to the ones obtained by gluing solid tori. Such gluing involves the choice of a large diffeomorphism of the boundary torus, along with the choice of a large gauge transformation for the background flavor symmetry connections, if present. Our modular property is a manifestation of the consistency of the gluing procedure. The modular property is used to rederive a supersymmetric Cardy formula for four-dimensional gauge theories that has played a key role in computing the entropy of supersymmetric black holes. To be concrete, we work with four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric theories but we expect versions of our result to apply more widely to supersymmetric theories in other dimensions.

In this paper, we analyze the constraints imposed by unitarity and crossing symmetry on conformal theories in large dimensions. In particular, we show that in a unitary conformal theory in large dimension $D$, the four-point function of identical scalar operators $φ$ with scaling dimension $Δ_φ$ such that $Δ_φ/D<3/4$, is necessarily that of the generalized free field theory. This result follows only from crossing symmetry and unitarity. In particular, we do not impose the existence of a conserved spin two operator (stress tensor). We also present an argument to extend the applicability of this result to a larger range of conformal dimensions, namely to $Δ_φ/D<1$. This extension requires some reasonable assumptions about the spectrum of light operators. Together, these results suggest that if there is a non-trivial conformal theory in large dimensions, not necessarily having a stress tensor, then its relevant operators must be exponentially weakly coupled with the rest.

We study the space of all kinematically allowed four photon and four graviton S-matrices, polynomial in scattering momenta. We demonstrate that this space is the permutation invariant sector of a module over the ring of polynomials of the Mandelstam invariants $s$, $t$ and $u$. We construct these modules for every value of the spacetime dimension $D$, and so explicitly count and parameterize the most general four photon and four graviton S-matrix at any given derivative order. We also explicitly list the local Lagrangians that give rise to these S-matrices. We then conjecture that the Regge growth of S-matrices in all physically acceptable classical theories is bounded by $s^2$ at fixed $t$. A four parameter subset of the polynomial photon S-matrices constructed above satisfies this Regge criterion. For gravitons, on the other hand, no polynomial addition to the Einstein S-matrix obeys this bound for $D \leq 6$. For $D \geq 7$ there is a single six derivative polynomial Lagrangian consistent with our conjectured Regge growth bound. Our conjecture thus implies that the Einstein four graviton S-matrix does not admit any physically acceptable polynomial modifications for $D\leq 6$. A preliminary analysis also suggests that every finite sum of pole exchange contributions to four graviton scattering also such violates our conjectured Regge growth bound, at least when $D\leq 6$, even when the exchanged particles have low spin.

An axiomatic approach to signal reconstruction is formulated, involving a sample consistent set and a guiding set, describing desired reconstructions. New frame-less reconstruction methods are proposed, based on a novel concept of a reconstruction set, defined as a shortest pathway between the sample consistent set and the guiding set. Existence and uniqueness of the reconstruction set are investigated in a Hilbert space, where the guiding set is a closed subspace and the sample consistent set is a closed plane, formed by a sampling subspace. Connections to earlier known consistent, generalized, and regularized reconstructions are clarified. New stability and reconstruction error bounds are derived, using the largest nontrivial angle between the sampling and guiding subspaces. Conjugate gradient iterative reconstruction algorithms are proposed and illustrated numerically for image magnification.

This paper studies graph-based active learning, where the goal is to reconstruct a binary signal defined on the nodes of a weighted graph, by sampling it on a small subset of the nodes. A new sampling algorithm is proposed, which sequentially selects the graph nodes to be sampled, based on an aggressive search for the boundary of the signal over the graph. The algorithm generalizes a recent method for sampling nodes in unweighted graphs. The generalization improves the sampling performance using the information gained from the available graph weights. An analysis of the number of samples required by the proposed algorithm is provided, and the gain over the unweighted method is further demonstrated in simulations. Additionally, the proposed method is compared with an alternative state of-the-art method, which is based on the graph's spectral properties. It is shown that the proposed method significantly outperforms the spectral sampling method, if the signal needs to be predicted with high accuracy. On the other hand, if a higher level of inaccuracy is tolerable, then the spectral method outperforms the proposed aggressive search method. Consequently, we propose a hybrid method, which is shown to combine the advantages of both approaches.

The stochastic block model (SBM) is an important generative model for random graphs in network science and machine learning, useful for benchmarking community detection (or clustering) algorithms. The symmetric SBM generates a graph with $2n$ nodes which cluster into two equally sized communities. Nodes connect with probability $p$ within a community and $q$ across different communities. We consider the case of $p=a\ln (n)/n$ and $q=b\ln (n)/n$. In this case, it was recently shown that recovering the community membership (or label) of every node with high probability (w.h.p.) using only the graph is possible if and only if the Chernoff-Hellinger (CH) divergence $D(a,b)=(\sqrt{a}-\sqrt{b})^2 \geq 1$. In this work, we study if, and by how much, community detection below the clustering threshold (i.e. $D(a,b)<1$) is possible by querying the labels of a limited number of chosen nodes (i.e., active learning). Our main result is to show that, under certain conditions, sampling the labels of a vanishingly small fraction of nodes (a number sub-linear in $n$) is sufficient for exact community detection even when $D(a,b)<1$. Furthermore, we provide an efficient learning algorithm which recovers the community memberships of all nodes w.h.p. as long as the number of sampled points meets the sufficient condition. We also show that recovery is not possible if the number of observed labels is less than $n^{1-D(a,b)}$. The validity of our results is demonstrated through numerical experiments.

In this paper we study the constraints imposed by conformal invariance on extended objects a.k.a defects in a conformal field theory. We identify a particularly nice class of defects that is closed under conformal transformations. Correlation function of the defect with a bulk local operator is fixed by conformal invariance up to an overall constant. This gives rise to the notion of defect expansion, where the defect itself is expanded in terms of local operators. This expansion generalizes the idea of the boundary state. We will show how one can fix the correlation function of two defects from the knowledge of the defect expansion. The defect correlator admits a number of conformal cross-ratios depending on their dimensionality. We find the differential equation obeyed by the conformal block and solve them in certain special cases.

We study the problem of selecting the best sampling set for bandlimited reconstruction of signals on graphs. A frequency domain representation for graph signals can be defined using the eigenvectors and eigenvalues of variation operators that take into account the underlying graph connectivity. Smoothly varying signals defined on the nodes are of particular interest in various applications, and tend to be approximately bandlimited in the frequency basis. Sampling theory for graph signals deals with the problem of choosing the best subset of nodes for reconstructing a bandlimited signal from its samples. Most approaches to this problem require a computation of the frequency basis (i.e., the eigenvectors of the variation operator), followed by a search procedure using the basis elements. This can be impractical, in terms of storage and time complexity, for real datasets involving very large graphs. We circumvent this issue in our formulation by introducing quantities called graph spectral proxies, defined using the powers of the variation operator, in order to approximate the spectral content of graph signals. This allows us to formulate a direct sampling set selection approach that does not require the computation and storage of the basis elements. We show that our approach also provides stable reconstruction when the samples are noisy or when the original signal is only approximately bandlimited. Furthermore, the proposed approach is valid for any choice of the variation operator, thereby covering a wide range of graphs and applications. We demonstrate its effectiveness through various numerical experiments.

We then show that a sampling set of given size with the largest associated cut-off frequency, which is optimal from a sampling theoretic point of view, minimizes the worst case predictive covariance of the MAP estimate on the GRF. This interpretation also gives an intuitive explanation for the superior performance of the sampling theoretic approach to active semi-supervised classification.

We consider the problem of offline, pool-based active semi-supervised learning on graphs. This problem is important when the labeled data is scarce and expensive whereas unlabeled data is easily available. The data points are represented by the vertices of an undirected graph with the similarity between them captured by the edge weights. Given a target number of nodes to label, the goal is to choose those nodes that are most informative and then predict the unknown labels. We propose a novel framework for this problem based on our recent results on sampling theory for graph signals. A graph signal is a real-valued function defined on each node of the graph. A notion of frequency for such signals can be defined using the spectrum of the graph Laplacian matrix. The sampling theory for graph signals aims to extend the traditional Nyquist-Shannon sampling theory by allowing us to identify the class of graph signals that can be reconstructed from their values on a subset of vertices. This approach allows us to define a criterion for active learning based on sampling set selection which aims at maximizing the frequency of the signals that can be reconstructed from their samples on the set. Experiments show the effectiveness of our method.

In particular, we present the phase diagram of N=(0,2) SQCD and determine its massive and low-energy spectrum. We find that the theory has no mass gap, a nearly constant distribution of massive states, and lots of massless states that in general flow to an interacting CFT. For a range of parameters where supersymmetry is not dynamically broken at low energies, we give a complete description of the low-energy physics in terms of 2d N=(0,2) SCFTs using anomaly matching and modular invariance. Our construction provides a vast landscape of new N=(0,2) SCFTs which, for small values of the central charge, could be used for building novel heterotic models with no moduli and, for large values of the central charge, could be dual to AdS_3 string vacua.

In this paper, we present two localized graph filtering based methods for interpolating graph signals defined on the vertices of arbitrary graphs from only a partial set of samples. The first method is an extension of previous work on reconstructing bandlimited graph signals from partially observed samples. The iterative graph filtering approach very closely approximates the solution proposed in the that work, while being computationally more efficient. As an alternative, we propose a regularization based framework in which we define the cost of reconstruction to be a combination of smoothness of the graph signal and the reconstruction error with respect to the known samples, and find solutions that minimize this cost. We provide both a closed form solution and a computationally efficient iterative solution of the optimization problem. The experimental results on the recommendation system datasets demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed methods.

We see that physics of such theories is very rich, much as the physics of 4d N=1 theories. We discover a new type of duality that is very reminiscent of the 4d Seiberg duality. Surprisingly, the new 2d duality is an operation of order three: it is IR equivalence of three different theories and, as such, is actually a triality. We also consider quiver theories and study their triality webs. Given a quiver graph, we find that supersymmetry is dynamically broken unless the ranks of the gauge groups and flavor groups satisfy stringent inequalities. In fact, for most of the graphs these inequalities have no solutions. This supports the folklore theorem that generic 2d N=(0,2) theories break supersymmetry dynamically.

In this paper we compute the superconformal index of 2d (2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories. The 2d superconformal index, a.k.a. flavored elliptic genus, is computed by a unitary matrix integral much like the matrix integral that computes 4d superconformal index. We compute the 2d index explicitly for a number of examples. In the case of abelian gauge theories we see that the index is invariant under flop transition and CY-LG correspondence. The index also provides a powerful check of the Seiberg-type duality for non-abelian gauge theories discovered by Hori and Tong.
In the later half of the paper, we study half-BPS surface operators in N=2 superconformal gauge theories. They are engineered by coupling the 2d (2,2) supersymmetric gauge theory living on the support of the surface operator to the 4d N=2 theory, so that different realizations of the same surface operator with a given Levi type are related by a 2d analogue of the Seiberg duality. The index of this coupled system is computed by using the tools developed in the first half of the paper. The superconformal index in the presence of surface defect is expected to be invariant under generalized S-duality. We demonstrate that it is indeed the case. In doing so the Seiberg-type duality of the 2d theory plays an important role.

The nodes of this graph represent the pixels in the image and a graph signal defined on the nodes represents the intensity values. Edge weights in the graph correspond to the bilateral filter coefficients and hence are data adaptive. Spectrum of a graph is defined in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian matrix. We use this spectral interpretation to generalize the bilateral filter and propose more flexible and application specific spectral designs of bilateral-like filters. We show that these spectral filters can be implemented with k-iterative bilateral filtering operations and do not require expensive diagonalization of the Laplacian matrix.

We investigate the superconformal index of four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories that arise on coincident M5 branes wrap** a holomorphic curve in a local Calabi-Yau three-fold. The structure of the index is very similar to that which appears in the special case preserving N=2 supersymmetry. We first compute the index for the fixed points that admit a known four-dimensional ultraviolet description and prove infrared equivalence at the level of the index for all such constructions. These results suggest a formulation of the index as a two-dimensional topological quantum field theory that generalizes the one that computes the N=2 index. The TQFT structure leads to an expression for the index of all class S fixed points in terms of the index of the N=2 theories. Calculations of spectral data using the index suggests a connection between these families of fixed points and the mathematics of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory on the wrapped curve.

In this paper we find preliminary evidence that N=2 superconformal QCD, the SU(N_c) SYM theory with N_f= 2 N_c fundamental hypermultiplets, might be integrable in the large N Veneziano limit. We evaluate the one-loop dilation operator in the scalar sector of the N=2 superconformal quiver with SU(N_c) X SU(N_{\check c}) gauge group, for N_c = N_{\check c}. Both gauge couplings g and \check g are exactly marginal. This theory interpolates between the Z_2 orbifold of N=4 SYM, which corresponds to \check g=g, and N=2 superconformal QCD, which is obtained for \check g -> 0. The planar one-loop dilation operator takes the form of a nearest-neighbor spin-chain Hamiltonian. For superconformal QCD the spin chain is of novel form: besides the color-adjoint fields φ^a_{b}, which occupy individual sites of the chain, there are "dimers" Q^a_{i} \bar Q^i_{b} of flavor-contracted fundamental fields, which occupy two neighboring sites. We solve the two-body scattering problem of magnon excitations and study the spectrum of bound states, for general \check g/g. The dimeric excitations of superconformal QCD are seen to arise smoothly for \check g -> 0 as the limit of bound wavefunctions of the interpolating theory. Finally we check the Yang-Baxter equation for the two-magnon S-matrix. It holds as expected at the orbifold point \check g = g. While violated for general \check g \neq g, it holds again in the limit \check g -> 0, hinting at one-loop integrability of planar N=2 superconformal QCD.

We attack the long-standing problem of finding the AdS dual of N = 2 superconformal QCD, the N=2 super Yang Mills theory with gauge group SU(N_c) and N_f = 2 N_c fundamental hyper multiplets. The theory admits a Veneziano expansion of large N_c and large N_f, with N_f/N_c and lambda = g^2 N_c kept fixed. The topological structure of large N diagrams motivates a general conjecture: the flavor-singlet sector of a gauge theory in the Veneziano limit is dual to a closed string theory; single closed string states correspond to "generalized single-trace" operators, where adjoint letters and flavor-contracted fundamental/antifundamental pairs are stringed together in a closed chain. We look for the string dual of N = 2 superconformal QCD from two fronts. From the bottom-up, we perform a systematic analysis of the protected spectrum using superconformal representation theory. We also evaluate the one-loop dilation operator in the scalar sector, finding a novel spin chain.
From the top-down, we consider the decoupling limit of known brane constructions. In both approaches, more insight is gained by viewing the theory as the degenerate limit of the N = 2 Z_2 orbifold of N = 4 SYM, as one of the two gauge couplings is tuned to zero. A consistent picture emerges. We conclude that the string dual is a sub-critical background with seven "geometric" dimensions, containing both an AdS_5 and an S^1 factor. The supergravity approximation is never entirely valid, even for large lambda, indeed the field theory has an exponential degeneracy of exactly protected states with higher spin, which must be dual to a sector of light string states.

We interpret the index of the 4d theory associated to an n-punctured Riemann surface as the n-point correlation function of a 2d topological QFT living on the surface. Invariance of the index under generalized S-duality transformations (the map** class group of the Riemann surface) translates into associativity of the operator algebra of the 2d TQFT. In the A_1 case, for which the 4d SCFTs have a Lagrangian realization, the structure constants and metric of the 2d TQFT can be calculated explicitly in terms of elliptic gamma functions. Associativity then holds thanks to a remarkable symmetry of an elliptic hypergeometric beta integral, proved very recently by van de Bult.

We consider a toroidal configuration of cosmic string in 3+1 dimensions in an abelian Higgs model, a compactification of the Nielsen-Olesen string. This object is classically unstable. We explicitly compute the number of permitted zero modes for majorana fermions coupled to such a string. As in the case of indefinitely long strings, there are |n| zero modes for winding number sector n, and correspondingly, induced fermionic charge n/2 which canbe fractional. According to a previously proved result, this implies quantum mechanical stability for objects with odd winding number. The result is of significance to cosmology in classes of unified theories permitting such cosmic strings.
