In the rapidly evolving area of integrated photonics, there is a growing need for materials that satisfy the particular requirements of increasingly complex and specialized devices and applications. Present photonic material platforms have made significant progress over the past years; however, each platform still faces specific material and performance challenges. We introduce a novel material for integrated photonics: Aluminum Gallium Nitride (AlGaN) on Aluminum Nitride (AlN) as a platform for develo** reconfigurable and nonlinear on-chip optical systems. AlGaN combines compatibility with standard semiconductor fabrication technologies, high electro-optic modulation capabilities, and large nonlinear coefficients while providing a broad and low-loss spectral transmission range, making it a viable material for advanced photonic applications. In this work, we design and grow AlGaN/AlN heterostructures and integrate fundamental photonic building blocks into these chips. In particular, we fabricate edge couplers, low-loss waveguides, directional couplers, and tunable high-quality factor ring resonators to enable nonlinear light-matter interaction and quantum functionality. The comprehensive platform we present in this work paves the way for nonlinear photon-pair generation applications, on-chip nonlinear quantum frequency conversion, and fast electro-optic modulation for switching and routing classical and quantum light fields.

Abstract:
We propose and analyze a new time-domain method for subcycle metrology of quantum electric fields using a combination of a 3rd order nonlinear optical process and homodyne detection with a local oscillator (LO) field. The new method enables isolation of intrinsically weak quantum noise contribution by subtraction of the shot noise of the LO on a pulse-by-pulse basis. Together with the centro-symme…

Together with the centro-symmetric character of the nonlinearity, our method unlocks novel opportunities toward terahertz and mid-infrared quantum field metrologies.

Tuning the values of artificial flux in the two-dimensional octagonal-diamond lattice drives topological phase transitions, including between singular and non-singular flatbands. We study the dynamical properties of nonlinear compact localized modes that can be continued from linear flatband modes. We show how the stability of the compact localized modes can be tuned by the nonlinearity strength or the applied artificial flux. Our model can be realized using ring resonator lattices or nonlinear waveguide arrays.

We study how the nonlinear propagation dynamics of bulk states may be used to distinguish topological phases of slowly-driven Floquet lattices. First, we show how instabilities of nonlinear Bloch waves may be used to populate Floquet bands and measure their Chern number via the emergence of nontrivial polarization textures in a similar manner to static (undriven) lattices. Second, we show how the nonlinear dynamics of non-stationary superposition states may be used to identify dynamical symmetry inversion points in the intra-cycle dynamics, thereby allowing anomalous Floquet phases to be distinguished from the trivial phase. The approaches may be readily implemented using light propagation in nonlinear waveguide arrays.

The rare earth magnetic order in pure and doped Er$_{(1-x)}$Ho$_{x}$Ni$_2$B$_2$C (x~=~0,~0.25,~0.50,~0.75,~1) single crystal samples was investigated using magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements. Superconducting quaternary borocarbides, $R$Ni$_2$B$_2$C where R~=~Er, Ho , are both magnetic intermetallic superconductors with the transition temperatures $\sim$ 10 K. These compounds also develop magnetic order in the vicinity of this temperature. Depending on the rare earth composition the coupling between superconductivity and magnetism creates several phases, ranging from a reentrant superconductor with a mixture of commensurate and incommensurate antiferromagnetism to a total incommensurate antiferromagnetic spin modulation with a weak ferromagnetic state. All of these phases coexist with superconductivity. RKKY magnetic interactions are used to describe the magnetic orders in the pure compounds. However, the do** of Ho on Er (or Er on Ho) sites which have two strong magnetic moments with two different easy directions creates new and complicated magnetic modulations with possible local disorder effects. One fascinating effect is the development of an induced magnetic state resembling the pure and doped $R_2$CuO$_4$, R~=~Nd and Pr.

Topological lasers are of growing interest as a way to achieve disorder-robust single mode lasing using arrays of coupled resonators. We study lasing in a two-dimensional coupled resonator lattice exhibiting transitions between trivial and topological phases, which allows us to systematically characterize the lasing modes throughout a topological phase. We show that, unlike conventional topological robustness that requires a sufficiently large bulk band gap, bifurcations in topological edge mode lasing can occur even when the band gap is maximized. We show that linear mode bifurcations from single mode to multi-mode lasing can occur deep within the topological phase, sensitive to both the pump shape and lattice geometry. We suggest ways to suppress these bifurcations and preserve single edge mode lasing.

Taking inspiration from NER systems for noisy text in social media, we implement a two-stage approach that is robust to computer transcription errors and does not require significant computational expense to accommodate new film titles/releases. Evaluating on a diverse set of podcasts, we demonstrate more than a 20% increase in F1 score across three baseline approaches when combining fuzzy-matching with a linear model aware of film-specific metadata.
