We theoretically investigate the ground states of a chiral magnet with a square anisotropy and show that it supports domain wall networks as stable ground states. A domain wall junction in the domain wall network turns out to be a skyrmion with half topological charge and, therefore, the found domain wall network has a second topological nature, a skyrmion crystal. More specifically, we present a ground-state phase diagram of the chiral magnet with varying anisotropy parameters consisting of skyrmion lattices, chiral soliton lattices, and ferromagnetic states. In the presence of the square anisotropy, the skyrmion crystal forms a domain wall network. The size of domains in the domain wall network is shown to be tunable by an external magnetic field, offering a way to realize experimentally detectable domain wall networks.

Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM.

Such a Kähler flag manifold, which takes the form $\frac{U(n_1+\cdots+ n_{L+1})}{U(n_1) \times \cdots \times U(n_{L+1})}$, can be realized as a vacuum moduli space of a $U(N_1) \times \cdots \times U(N_L)$ quiver gauged linear sigma model. When the gauge coupling constants are finite, the gauged linear sigma model admits BPS vortex configurations, which reduce to BPS lumps in the low energy effective sigma model in the large gauge coupling limit. We derive an ADHM-like quotient construction of the moduli space of BPS vortices and lumps by generalizing the quotient construction in $U(N)$ gauge theories by Hanany and Tong. As an application, we check the dualities of the 2d models by computing the vortex partition functions using the quotient construction.

We study resurgence in the context of the partition function of 2-dimensional $SU(N)$ and $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory on a surface of genus $h$. After discussing the properties of the transseries in the undeformed theory, we add a term to the action to deform the theory. The partition function can still be calculated exactly, and the deformation has the effect of analytically continuing the effective genus parameter in the exact answer to be non-integer. In the deformed theory we find new saddle solutions and study their properties. In this context each saddle contributes an asymptotic series to the transseries which can be analysed using Borel-Ècalle resummation. For specific values of the deformation parameter we find Cheshire cat points where the asymptotic series in the transseries truncate to a few terms. We also find new partial differential equations satisfied by the partition function, and a number of applications of these are explained, including low-order/low-order resurgence.

We discuss all-order transseries in one of the simplest quantum mechanical systems: a U(1) symmetric single-degree-of-freedom system with a first-order time derivative term. Following the procedure of the Lefschetz thimble method, we explicitly evaluate the path integral for the generating function of the Noether charge and derive its exact transseries expression. Using the conservation law, we find all the complex saddle points of the action, which are responsible for the non-perturbative effects and the resurgence structure of the model. The all-order power-series contributions around each saddle point are generated from the one-loop determinant with the help of the differential equations obeyed by the generating function. The transseries are constructed by summing up the contributions from all the relevant saddle points, which we identify by determining the intersection numbers between the dual thimbles and the original path integration contour. We confirm that the Borel ambiguities of the perturbation series are canceled by the non-perturbative ambiguities originating from the discontinuous jumps of the intersection numbers. The transseries computed in the path-integral formalism agrees with the exact generating function, whose explicit form can be obtained in the operator formalism thanks to the integrable nature of the model. This agreement indicates the non-perturbative completeness of the transseries obtained by the semi-classical expansion of the path integral based on the Lefschetz thimble method.

The resurgence structure of the 2d $O(N)$ sigma model at large $N$ is studied with a focus on an IR momentum cutoff scale $a$ that regularizes IR singularities in the semiclassical expansion. Transseries expressions for condensates and correlators are derived as series of the dynamical scale $Λ$ (nonperturbative exponential) and coupling $λ_μ$ renormalized at the momentum scale $μ$. While there is no ambiguity when $a > Λ$, we find for $a < Λ$ that the nonperturbative sectors have new imaginary ambiguities besides the well-known renormalon ambiguity in the perturbative sector. These ambiguities arise as a result of an analytic continuation of transseries coefficients to small values of the IR cutoff $a$ below the dynamical scale $Λ$. We find that the imaginary ambiguities are cancelled each other when we take all of them into account. By comparing the semiclassical expansion with the transseries for the exact large-$N$ result, we find that some ambiguities vanish in the $a \rightarrow 0$ limit and hence the resurgence structure changes when going from the semiclassical expansion to the exact result with no IR cutoff. An application of our approach to the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ sigma model is also discussed. We find in the compactified model with the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ twisted boundary condition that the resurgence structure changes discontinuously as the compactification radius is varied.

We study a resurgence structure of a quantum field theory with a phase transition to uncover relations between resurgence and phase transitions. In particular, we focus on three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics (SQED) with multiple hypermultiplets, where a second-order quantum phase transition has been recently proposed in the large-flavor limit. We provide interpretations of the phase transition from the viewpoints of Lefschetz thimbles and resurgence. For this purpose, we study the Lefschetz thimble structure and properties of the large-flavor expansion for the partition function obtained by the supersymmetric localization. We show that the second-order phase transition is understood as a phenomenon where a Stokes and anti-Stokes phenomenon occurs simultaneously. The order of the phase transition is determined by how saddles collide at the critical point. In addition, the phase transition accompanies an infinite number of Stokes phenomena due to the supersymmetry. These features are appropriately mapped to the Borel plane structures as the resurgence theory expects. Given the lessons from the SQED, we provide a more general discussion on the relationship between the resurgence and phase transitions. In particular, we show how the information on the phase transition is decoded from the Borel resummation technique.

We study the vacuum pair production by a time-dependent strong electric field based on the exact WKB analysis. We identify the generic structure of a Stokes graph for systems with the vacuum pair production and show that the number of produced pairs is given by a product of connection matrices for Stokes segments connecting pairs of turning points. We derive an explicit formula for the number of produced pairs, assuming the semi-classical limit. The obtained formula can be understood as a generalization of the divergent asymptotic series method by Berry, and is consistent with other semi-classical methods such as the worldline instanton method and the steepest descent evaluation of the Bogoliubov coefficients done by Brezin and Izykson. We also use the formula to discuss effects of time-dependence of the applied strong electric field including the interplay between the perturbative multi-photon pair production and non-peturbative Schwinger mechanism, and the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism.

We develop the effective field theoretical descriptions of spin systems in the presence of symmetry-breaking effects: the magnetic field, single-ion anisotropy, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Starting from the lattice description of spin systems, we show that the symmetry-breaking terms corresponding to the above effects can be incorporated into the effective field theory as a combination of a background (or spurious) $\SO(3)$ gauge field and a scalar field in the symmetric tensor representation, which are eventually fixed at their physical values. We use the effective field theory to investigate mode spectra of inhomogeneous ground states, with focusing on one-dimensionally inhomogeneous states, such as helical and spiral states. Although the helical and spiral ground states share a common feature of supporting the gapless Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the translational symmetry breaking, they have qualitatively different dispersion relations: isotropic in the helical phase while anisotropic in the spiral phase. We also discuss the magnon production induced by an inhomogeneous magnetic field, and find a formula akin to the Schwinger formula. Our formula for the magnon production gives a finite rate for antiferromagnets, and a vanishing rate for ferromagnets, whereas that for ferrimagnets interpolates between the two cases.

We investigate the lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small) with the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetric twisted boundary condition, where a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences ($L_{s}\gg L_τ$) is taken to approximate ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. We find that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop, which is an order parameter of the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetry, remains consistent with zero ($|\langle P\rangle|\sim 0$) from small to relatively large inverse coupling $β$ (from large to small $L_τ$). As $β$ increases, the distribution of the Polyakov loop on the complex plane, which concentrates around the origin for small $β$, isotropically spreads and forms a regular $N$-sided-polygon shape (e.g. pentagon for $N=5$), leading to $|\langle P\rangle| \sim 0$. By investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, we also verify the existence of fractional instantons and bions, which cause tunneling transition between the classical $N$ vacua and stabilize the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry. Even for quite high $β$, we find that a regular-polygon shape of the Polyakov-loop distribution, even if it is broken, tends to be restored and $|\langle P\rangle|$ gets smaller as the number of samples increases. To discuss the adiabatic continuity of the vacuum structure from another viewpoint, we calculate the $β$ dependence of ``pseudo-entropy" density $\propto\langle T_{xx}-T_{ττ}\rangle$. The result is consistent with the absence of a phase transition between large and small $β$ regions.

We take a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences to approximate the model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. For periodic boundary condition imposed in the $S_τ^{1}$ direction, we show that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop undergoes a deconfinement crossover as the compactified circumference is decreased, where the peak of the associated susceptibility gets sharper for larger $N$. For ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition, we find that, even at relatively high $β$ (small circumference), the regular $N$-sided polygon-shaped distributions of Polyakov loop leads to small expectation values of Polyakov loop, which implies unbroken ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry if sufficient statistics and large volumes are adopted. We also argue the existence of fractional instantons and bions by investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, which causes transition between ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ vacua.

We find that the global PSU($N$)=SU($N$)$/{\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry remains unbroken at "quantum" and "classical" levels for the small and large $L_τ$, respectively: in the small $L_τ$ region for finite $N$, the order parameter fluctuates extensively with its expectation value consistent with zero after taking an ensemble average, while in the large $L_τ$ region the order parameter remains small with little fluctuations. We also calculate the thermal entropy and find that the degrees of freedom in the small $L_τ$ regime are consistent with $N-1$ free complex scalar fields, thereby indicating a good agreement with the prediction from the large-$N$ study for small $L_τ$.

We exhaustively construct instanton solutions and elucidate their properties in one-dimensional anti-ferromagnetic chiral magnets based on the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model description of spin chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. By introducing an easy-axis potential and a staggered magnetic field, we obtain a phase diagram consisting of ground-state phases with two points (or one point) in the easy-axis dominant cases, a helical modulation at a fixed latitude of the sphere, and a tricritical point allowing helical modulations at an arbitrary latitude. We find that instantons (or skyrmions in two-dimensional Euclidean space) appear as composite solitons in different fashions in these phases: temporal domain walls or wall-antiwall pairs (bions) in the easy-axis dominant cases, dislocations (or phase slips) with fractional instanton numbers in the helical state, and isolated instantons and calorons living on the top of the helical modulation at the tricritical point. We also show that the models with DM interaction and an easy-plane potential can be mapped into those without them, providing a useful tool to investigate the model with the DM interaction.

We derive the semiclassical contributions from the real and complex bions in the two-dimensional $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ sigma model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^{1}$ with a twisted boundary condition. The bion configurations are saddle points of the complexified Euclidean action, which can be viewed as bound states of a pair of fractional instantons with opposite topological charges. We first derive the bion solutions by solving the equation of motion in the model with a potential which simulates an interaction induced by fermions in the $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ quantum mechanics. The bion solutions have quasi-moduli parameters corresponding to the relative distance and phase between the constituent fractional instantons. By summing over the Kaluza-Klein modes of the quantum fluctuations around the bion backgrounds, we find that the effective action for the quasi-moduli parameters is renormalized and becomes a function of the dynamical scale (or the renormalized coupling constant). Based on the renormalized effective action, we obtain the semiclassical bion contribution in a weak coupling limit by making use of the Lefschetz thimble method. We find that the non-perturbative contribution vanishes in the supersymmetric case and it has an imaginary ambiguity which is consistent with the expected infrared renormalon ambiguity in non-supersymmetric cases. This is the first explicit result indicating the relation between the complex bion and the infrared renormalon.

We study a certain class of supersymmetric (SUSY) observables in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY Chern-Simons (CS) matter theories and investigate how their exact results are related to the perturbative series with respect to coupling constants given by inverse CS levels. We show that the observables have nontrivial resurgent structures by expressing the exact results as a full transseries consisting of perturbative and non-perturbative parts. As real mass parameters are varied, we encounter Stokes phenomena at an infinite number of points, where the perturbative series becomes non-Borel-summable due to singularities on the positive real axis of the Borel plane. We also investigate the Stokes phenomena when the phase of the coupling constant is varied. For these cases, we find that the Borel ambiguities in the perturbative sector are canceled by those in nonperturbative sectors and end up with an unambiguous result which agrees with the exact result even on the Stokes lines. We also decompose the Coulomb branch localization formula, which is an integral representation for the exact results, into Lefschetz thimble contributions and study how they are related to the resurgent transseries. We interpret the non-perturbative effects appearing in the transseries as contributions of complexified SUSY solutions which formally satisfy the SUSY conditions but are not on the original path integral contour.

We discuss a supersymmetric extension of a non-relativistic Chern-Simons matter theory, known as the SUSY Jackiw-Pi model, in a harmonic trap. We show that the non-relativistic version of the superconformal symmetry, called the super-Schrödinger symmetry, is not spoiled by an external field including the harmonic potential. It survives as a modified symmetry whose generators have explicit time dependences determined by the strength of the trap, the rotation velocity of the system and the fermion number chemical potential. We construct 1/3 BPS states of trapped Jackiw-Pi vortices preserving a part of the modified superconformal symmetry and discuss fluctuations around static BPS configurations. In addition to the bosonic massive Nambu-Goldstone modes, we find that there exist massive Nambu-Goldstone fermions associated with broken modified super-Schrödinger symmetry generators. Furthermore, we find that eigenmodes form supermultiplets of a modified supersymmetry preserved by the static BPS backgrounds. As a consequence of the modified supersymmetry, infinite towers of explicit spectra can be found for eigenmodes correspond- ing to bosonic and fermionic lowest Landau levels.

We dub this method as the ghostbuster mechanism~\cite{Fujimori:2016udq}. We show that the mechanism removes the ghost supermultiplet but also terms including $R^n$ with $n\geq3$, after integrating out auxiliary degrees of freedom. For pure supergravity case, there appears an instability in the resultant scalar potential. We then show that the instability of the scalar potential can be cured by introducing matter couplings in such a way that the system has a stable potential.

We systematically construct ghost-free higher-derivative actions of Abelian vector supermultiplets in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ global supersymmetric theories. After giving a simple example which illustrates that a naive introduction of a higher-derivative term gives rise to a ghost, we discuss possible building blocks for a ghost-free action and explicitly show that their bosonic parts have no ghost mode and the auxiliary field $\boldsymbol{D}$ does not propagate. Higher-derivative terms yield higher powers of the auxiliary field $\boldsymbol{D}$ in the actions, and the D-term equations of motion consequently admit multiple solutions in general. We confirm that the well-known supersymmetric Dirac-Born-Infeld action falls into this class. We further give another example in which the standard quadratic kinetic term (Maxwell term) is corrected by a quartic term of the field strength. We also discuss possible couplings to matter fields and a deformed D-term potential.

Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in a two-dimensional (2D) harmonic trap are known to possess a hidden 2D Schrödinger symmetry, that is, the Schrödinger symmetry modified by a trap** potential. Spontaneous breaking of this symmetry gives rise to a breathing motion of the BEC, whose oscillation frequency is robustly determined by the strength of the harmonic trap. In this paper, we demonstrate that the concept of the 2D Schrödinger symmetry can be applied to predict the nature of three dimensional (3D) collective modes propagating along a condensate confined in an elongated trap. We find three kinds of collective modes whose existence is robustly ensured by the Schrödinger symmetry, which are physically interpreted as one breather mode and two Kelvin-ripple complex modes, i.e., composite modes in which the vortex core and the condensate surface oscillate interactively. We provide analytical expressions for the dispersion relations (energy-momentum relation) of these modes using the Bogoliubov theory [D. A. Takahashi and M. Nitta, Ann. Phys. 354, 101 (2015)]. Furthermore, we point out that these modes can be interpreted as "quasi-massive-Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes", that is, they have the properties of both quasi-NG and massive NG modes: quasi-NG modes appear when a symmetry of a part of a Lagrangian, which is not a symmetry of full a Lagrangian, is spontaneously broken, while massive NG modes appear when a modified symmetry is spontaneously broken.

We investigate the resurgence structure in quantum mechanical models originating in 2d non-linear sigma models with emphasis on nearly supersymmetric and quasi-exactly solvable parameter regimes. By expanding the ground state energy in powers of a supersymmetry-breaking deformation parameter $δε$, we derive exact results for the expansion coefficients. In the class of models described by real multiplets, the ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy has a non-Borel summable asymptotic series, which gives rise to imaginary ambiguities leading to rich resurgence structure. We discuss the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics (QM) as an example and show that the semiclassical contributions from complex multi-bion solutions correctly reproduce the corresponding part in the exact result including the imaginary ambiguities. As a typical model described by chiral multiplets, we discuss the $\mathbb C P^{N-1}$ QM and show that the exact ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy can be completely reconstructed from the semiclassical multi-bion contributions. Although the ${\mathcal O}(δε)$ ground state energy has trivial resurgence structure, a simple but rich resurgence structure appears at ${\mathcal O}(δε^{2})$. We show the complete cancellation between the ${\mathcal O}(δε^{2})$ imaginary ambiguities arising from the non-Borel summable perturbation series and those in the semiclassical contributions of $N-1$ complex bion solutions. We also discuss the resurgence structure of a squashed ${\mathbb C}P^1$ QM.

We find that a variance and a center of a trapped gas with or without a vorticity can be regarded as massive Nambu-Goldstone (NG) modes associated with spontaneous breaking of the modified Schrödinger symmetry. We show that the Noether theorem for the modified Schrödinger symmetry gives universal equations of motion which describe exact time-evolutions of the trapped gases such as a harmonic oscillation, a cyclotron motion and a breathing oscillation with frequencies determined by the symmetry independently of the details of the system. We obtain this model by removing a ghost in a higher derivative chiral model, with Higgsing it in terms of an auxiliary vector superfield. Depending on the sign of the quadratic derivative term of the chiral superfield, the model contains two ghost free branches of the parameter regions. We find that supersymmetry is spontaneously broken in one branch while it is preserved in the other branch. As a consequence of dynamical F-term field, a conserved U(1) charge corresponding to the number density of $F$ appears, which can be regarded as a generalization of the R-symmetry.

We discuss the non-perturbative contributions from real and complex saddle point solutions in the $\mathbb{C}P^1$ quantum mechanics with fermionic degrees of freedom, using the Lefschetz thimble formalism beyond the gaussian approximation. We find bion solutions, which correspond to (complexified) instanton-antiinstanton configurations stabilized in the presence of the fermionic degrees of freedom. By computing the one-loop determinants in the bion backgrounds, we obtain the leading order contributions from both the real and complex bion solutions. To incorporate quasi zero modes which become nearly massless in a weak coupling limit, we regard the bion solutions as well-separated instanton-antiinstanton configurations and calculate a complexified quasi moduli integral based on the Lefschetz thimble formalism. The non-perturbative contributions from the real and complex bions are shown to cancel out in the supersymmetric case and give an (expected) ambiguity in the non-supersymmetric case, which plays a vital role in the resurgent trans-series. For nearly supersymmetric situation, evaluation of the Lefschetz thimble gives results in precise agreement with those of the direct evaluation of the Schrödinger equation. We also perform the same analysis for the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics and point out some important differences showing that the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics does not correctly describe the 1d limit of the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ field theory of $\mathbb{R} \times S^1$.

Multi-layered Josephson junctions are modeled in the context of a field theory, and dynamics of Josephson vortices trapped inside insulators are studied. Starting from a theory consisting of complex and real scalar fields coupled to a U(1) gauge field which admit parallel $N-1$ domain-wall solutions, Josephson couplings are introduced weakly between the complex scalar fields. The $N-1$ domain walls behave as insulators separating $N$ superconductors, where one of the complex scalar fields has a gap. We construct the effective Lagrangian on the domain walls, which reduces to a coupled sine-Gordon model for well-separated walls We then construct sine-Gordon solitons emerging in an effective theory in which we identify Josephson vortices carrying singly quantized magnetic fluxes. When two neighboring superconductors tend to have the same phase, the ground state does not change with the positions of domain walls. On the other hand, when two neighboring superconductors tend to have $π$-phase differences, the ground state has a phase transition depending on the positions of domain walls; when the two walls are close to each other, frustration occurs because of the coupling between the two superconductors besides the thin superconductor. Focusing on the case of three superconductors separated by two insulators, we find for the former case that the interaction between two Josephson vortices on different insulators changes its nature, i.e., attractive or repulsive, depending on the positions of the domain walls. In the latter case, there emerges fractional Josephson vortices when two degenerate ground states appear due to spontaneous charge-symmetry breaking, and the number of the Josephson vortices varies with the position of the domain walls. Our predictions should be verified in multilayered Josephson junctions.

Due to the lack of the Lorentz symmetry, the conditions for both unitarity and renormalizability are modified from those in relativistic theories. For renormalizability, the conventional discussion of the power counting conditions has to be extended. Because of the dependence of $S$-matrix elements on the reference frame, unitarity requires stronger conditions than those in relativistic cases. We show that the conditions for unitarity and renormalizabilty are identical as in relativistic theories. We discuss the importance of symmetries for a theory to be renormalizable.

Without the Lorentz symmetry, both the unitarity and the renormalizability conditions are modified from those in relativistic theories. We show that for renormalizability, an extended version of the power counting condition is required in addition to the conventional one. The unitarity bound for S-matrix elements also gives stronger constraints on interaction terms because of the reference frame dependence of scattering amplitudes. We prove that both unitarity and renormalizability require identical conditions as in the case of conventional relativistic theories.

The anisotropic Weyl rescaling and the coset space dimensional reduction are used to map rotationally symmetric instantons to vortices in two-dimensional anisotropic systems on the hyperbolic plane. As examples, we study anisotropic BPS baby Skyrmion 1+1 dimensions and BPS Skyrmion in 2+1 dimensions, for which we take Kahler 1-form and the Wess-Zumiono-Witten term as the superpotentials, respectively, and an anisotropic generalized Yang-Mills instanton in 4+1 dimensions, for which we take the Chern-Simons term as the superpotential.

The appearance of the Y-junction (but not a Delta-junction) implies that in both cases of superconductors and QCD, the bound state is described by a genuine three-body interaction (but not by the sum of two-body interactions). We also discuss a confinement/deconfinement phase transition.

We investigate the structure of the moduli space of multiple BPS non-Abelian vortices in U(N) gauge theory with N fundamental Higgs fields, focusing our attention on the action of the exact global (color-flavor diagonal) SU(N) symmetry on it. The moduli space of a single non-Abelian vortex, CP(N-1), is spanned by a vector in the fundamental representation of the global SU(N) symmetry. The moduli space of winding-number k vortices is instead spanned by vectors in the direct-product representation: they decompose into the sum of irreducible representations each of which is associated with a Young tableau made of k boxes, in a way somewhat similar to the standard group composition rule of SU(N) multiplets. The Kähler potential is exactly determined in each moduli subspace, corresponding to an irreducible SU(N) orbit of the highest-weight configuration.

The BPS equations are classified in terms of the number of preserved supercharges and remaining subgroups of the SU(4)_R symmetry. We study structures of a map between projection conditions for the supercharges in eleven dimensions and those in the ABJM model. The BPS configurations in the ABJM model can be interpreted as known BPS objects in eleven-dimensional Mtheory, such as intersecting M2, M5-branes, M-waves, KK-monopoles and M9-branes. We also show that these BPS conditions reduce to those in N = 8 super Yang-Mills theory via the standard D2-reduction procedure in a consistent way with the M-theory interpretation of the BPS conditions.

Domain walls with non-Abelian orientational moduli are constructed in U(N) gauge theories coupled to Higgs scalar fields with degenerate masses. The associated global symmetry is broken by the domain walls, resulting in the Nambu-Goldstone (and quasi-Nambu-Goldstone) bosons, which form the non-Abelian orientational moduli. As walls separate, the wave functions of the non-Abelian orientational moduli spread between domain walls. By taking the limit of Higgs mass differences to vanish, we clarify the convertion of wall position moduli into the non-Abelian orientational moduli. The moduli space metric and its Kahler potential of the effective field theory on the domain walls are constructed. We consider two models: a U(1) gauge theory with several charged Higgs fields, and a U(N) gauge theory with 2N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. More details are found in our paper published in Phys. Rev. D77 (2008) 125008 [arXiv:0802.3135 [hep-th]].

We study what might be called fractional vortices, vortex configurations with the minimum winding from the viewpoint of their topological stability, but which are characterized by various notable substructures in the transverse energy distribution. The fractional vortices occur in diverse Abelian or non-Abelian generalizations of the Higgs model. The global and local features characterizing these are studied, and we identify the two crucial ingredients for their occurrence - the vacuum degeneracy leading to non-trivial vacuum moduli M, and the BPS nature of the vortices. Fractional vortices are further classified into two kinds. The first type of such vortices appear when M has orbifold Z_n singularities; the second type occurs in systems in which the vacuum moduli space M possesses either a deformed geometry or some singularity. These general features are illustrated with several concrete models.

The structure of the moduli spaces turns out in fact to be considerably richer here than what was found in the U(N) theories. We find that vortices are generally of the semi-local type, with power-like tails of profile functions.

Among zero modes of string positions, the center of mass of strings in each region between two adjacent domain walls is shown to be non-normalizable whereas the rests are normalizable. We study dynamics of vortex-strings stretched between separated domain walls by using two methods, the moduli space (geodesic) approximation of full 1/4 BPS states and the charged particle approximation for string endpoints in the wall effective action. In the first method we obtain the effective Lagrangian explicitly and find the 90 degree scattering for head-on collision. In the second method the domain wall effective action is assumed to be U(1)^N gauge theory, and we find a good agreement between two methods for well separated strings. Abstract:
Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) vortices in U(N) gauge theories have two layers corresponding to non-Abelian and Abelian fluxes, whose widths depend nontrivially on the ratio of U(1) and SU(N) gauge couplings. We find numerically and analytically that the widths differ significantly from the Compton lengths of lightest massive particles with the appropriate quantum number.

We study a class of classical solutions of three-dimensional N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory coupled with U(N) \times U(N) bi-fundamental matter fields. Especially, time evolutions of fuzzy spheres are discussed for both massless and massive cases. For the massive case, there are a variety of solutions having different behaviors according to the value of the mass. In addition to the time-dependent solutions, we analyze non-BPS static solutions which represent parallel M5/M5 or M5/anti-M5-branes suspended by multiple M2-branes. These solutions are similar to the fundamental strings connecting two parallel (anti) Dp-branes in perturbative string theory. A moving M5-brane and domain wall solutions with constant velocity that are obtained by the Lorentz boost of the known BPS solutions are briefly addressed.
