Understanding how the $\mathrm{H}_2$ molecule is formed under the chemical conditions of the interstellar media (ISM) is critical to the whole chemistry of it. Formation of $\mathrm{H}_2$ in the ISM requires a third body acting as a reservoir of energy. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH's) are excellent candidates to play that role. In this work we simulated the collisions of hydrogen atoms with coronene to form $\mathrm{H}_2$ via the Eley-Rideal mechanism. To do so, we used Born-Oppenheimer (ab initio) Molecular Dynamics simulations. Our results show that that adsorption of H atoms and subsequent release of $\mathrm{H}_2$ readily happen on coronene for H atoms with kinetic energy as large as 1 eV. Special attention is paid to dissipation and partition of the energy released in the reactions. The capacity of coronene to dissipate collision and reaction energies depends varies with the reaction site. Inner sites dissipate energy easier and faster than edge sites, thus evidencing an interplay between the potential energy surface around the reaction center and its ability to cool the projectile. As for the the recombination of H atoms and the subsequent formation of $\mathrm{H}_{2}$, it is observed that $\sim 15\%$ of the energy is dissipated by the coronene molecule as vibrational energy and the remaining energy is carried by $\mathrm{H}_{2}$. The $\mathrm{H}_{2}$ molecules desorb from coronene with an excited vibrational state ($\upsilon \geq 3$), a large amount of translational kinetic energy ($\geq$ 0.4 eV) and with a small activation of the rotational degree of freedom.

Atoms under pressure undergo a series of processes and modification of its electronic structure. Examples are the spontaneous ionization, stabilization of excited-state configurations that result in a level-crossing with the ground state of the free atom, and contraction of atomic shells. In this work, we do a systematic study of the effects of confinement with harmonic potential on the electronic structure of atoms from H to Ne. Dynamic and static correlation is taken into account by performing CCSD and CASSCF calculations, respectively. Because the strength of harmonic confinement cannot be translated into pressure, we envisioned a "calibration" method to transform confinement into pressure. We focused on the effect of confinement on: i) changes of electron distribution and localization within the $K$ and $L$ atomic shells, ii) confinement-induced ionization pressure, iii) level crossing of electronic states, and iv) the electron correlation energy. We found that contraction of valence and core shells are not negligible and that the use of standard pseudopotentials might be not adequate to study solids under extreme pressures. The critical pressure at which and atom ionizes follows a periodic trend, and it ranges from $28$ GPa for Li to $10.8$ TPa for Ne. In Li and a Be, pressure induces mixing of the ground state configuration with excited states. At high pressure, the ground state of Li and Be becomes a doublet and a triplet with configurations $1s^22p$ and $1s^22s2p$ respectively. The potential consequences of these changes of configuration on the chemistry of Be are discussed. Finally, the changes in the amount of electron correlation are characterized and analyzed in terms of the RPA approximation. For atoms with fewer electrons in the valence shell correlation increases, but for atoms with more electron, the increasing of kinetic energy dominates over electron correlation.

The stability and properties of the monovacancy and the divacancy in single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are addressed by spin-density functional calculations. We study these defects in four nanotubes, the armchair (6,6) and (8,8) and the zigzag (10,0) and (14,0), which have diameters of about 8 and 11 Å, respectively. We also study different defect concentrations along the tube axis by increasing the supercell in this direction in order to have one defect every 13 and 26 Åof CNT length. Our results show that in the equilibrium geometry CNTs with a monovacancy exhibit ferromagnetism with magnetic moments ranging from 0.3 to 0.8 $μ_{\rm B}$. On the other hand, CNTs with a divacancy do not exhibit magnetism due to the full reconstruction around the defect where all C atoms are three coordinated. We observe that the presence of a monovacancy does not change drastically the CNT electronic properties, preserving their corresponding metallic or semiconducting character. However, for the divacancy both armchair and zigzag CNT become semiconductors exhibiting a energy gap of about 0.15 eV.
