We present the first results from a proof-of-concept search for dark sectors via invisible decays of pseudoscalar $η$ and $η'$ mesons in the NA64h experiment at the CERN SPS. Our novel technique uses the charge-exchange reaction of 50 GeV $π^-$ on nuclei of an active target as the source of neutral mesons. The $η, η' \to invisible$ events would exhibit themselves via a striking signature - the complete disappearance of the incoming beam energy in the detector. No evidence for such events has been found with $2.9\times10^{9}$ pions on target accumulated during one day of data taking. This allows us to set a stringent limit on the branching ratio ${\rm Br}(η' \to invisible) < 2.1 \times 10^{-4}$ improving the current bound by a factor of $\simeq3$. We also set a limit on ${\rm Br}(η\to invisible) < 1.1 \times 10^{-4}$ comparable with the existing one. These results demonstrate the great potential of our approach and provide clear guidance on how to enhance and extend the sensitivity for dark sector physics from future searches for invisible neutral meson decays.

The $L_μ-L_τ$ model can also explain the Dark Matter relic abundance, by assuming that the $Z'$ boson acts as a ``portal'' to a new Dark Sector of particles in Nature, not charged under known interactions. In this work we present the results of the $Z'$ search performed by the NA64-$e$ experiment at CERN SPS, that collected $\sim 9\times10^{11}$ 100 GeV electrons im**ing on an active thick target. Despite the suppressed $Z'$ production yield with an electron beam, NA64-$e$ provides the first accelerator-based results excluding the $g-2$ preferred band of the $Z'$ parameter space in the 1 keV $ < m_{Z'} \lesssim 2$ MeV range, in complementarity with the limits recently obtained by the NA64-$μ$ experiment with a muon beam.

Many dynamical systems exhibit oscillatory behavior that can be modeled with differential equations. Recently, these equations have increasingly been derived through data-driven methods, including the transparent technique known as Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy). This paper illustrates the importance of accurately determining the system's limit cycle position in phase space for identifying sparse and effective models. We introduce a method for identifying the limit cycle position and the system's nullclines by applying SINDy to datasets adjusted with various offsets. This approach is evaluated using three criteria: model complexity, coefficient of determination, and generalization error. We applied this method to several models: the oscillatory FitzHugh-Nagumo model, a more complex model consisting of two coupled cubic differential equations with a single stable state, and a multistable model of glycolytic oscillations. Our results confirm that incorporating detailed information about the limit cycle in phase space enhances the accuracy of model identification in oscillatory systems.e space can improve the success of model identification efforts in oscillatory systems.

Self-organized bistability (SOB) stands as a critical behavior for the systems delicately adjusting themselves to the brink of bistability, characterized by a first-order transition. Its essence lies in the inherent ability of the system to undergo enduring shifts between the coexisting states, achieved through the self-regulation of a controlling parameter. Recently, SOB has been established in a scale-free network as a recurrent transition to a short-living state of global synchronization. Here, we embark on a theoretical exploration that extends the boundaries of the SOB concept on a higher-order network (implicitly embedded microscopically within a simplicial complex) while considering the limitations imposed by coupling constraints. By applying Ott-Antonsen dimensionality reduction in the thermodynamic limit to the higher-order network, we derive SOB requirements under coupling limits that are in good agreement with numerical simulations on systems of finite size. We use continuous synchronization diagrams and statistical data from spontaneous synchronized events to demonstrate the crucial role SOB plays in initiating and terminating temporary synchronized events. We show that under weak coupling consumption, these spontaneous occurrences closely resemble the statistical traits of the epileptic brain functioning.

We report on a search for a new $Z'$ ($L_μ-L_τ$) vector boson performed at the NA64 experiment employing a high energy muon beam and a missing energy-momentum technique. Muons from the M2 beamline at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron with a momentum of 160 GeV/c are directed to an active target. A signal event is a single scattered muon with momentum $<$ 80 GeV/c in the final state, accompanied by missing energy, i.e. no detectable activity in the downstream calorimeters. For a total statistic of $(1.98\pm0.02)\times10^{10}$ muons on target, no event is observed in the expected signal region. This allows us to set new limits on part of the remaining $(m_{Z'},\ g_{Z'})$ parameter space which could provide an explanation for the muon $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly. Additionally, our study excludes part of the parameter space suggested by the thermal Dark Matter relic abundance. Our results pave the way to explore Dark Sectors and light Dark Matter with muon beams in a unique and complementary way to other experiments.

We present the results of a missing-energy search for Light Dark Matter which has a new interaction with ordinary matter transmitted by a vector boson, called dark photon $A^\prime$. For the first time, this search is performed with a positron beam by using the significantly enhanced production of $A^\prime$ in the resonant annihilation of positrons with atomic electrons of the target nuclei, followed by the invisible decay of $A^\prime$ into dark matter. No events were found in the signal region with $(10.1 \pm 0.1)~\times~10^{9}$ positrons on target with 100 GeV energy. This allowed us to set new exclusion limits that, relative to the collected statistics, prove the power of this experimental technique. This measurement is a crucial first step toward a future exploration program with positron beams, whose estimated sensitivity is here presented.

Thermal dark matter models with particle $χ$ masses below the electroweak scale can provide an explanation for the observed relic dark matter density. This would imply the existence of a new feeble interaction between the dark and ordinary matter. We report on a new search for the sub-GeV $χ$ production through the interaction mediated by a new vector boson, called the dark photon $A'$, in collisions of 100 GeV electrons with the active target of the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS. With $9.37\times10^{11}$ electrons on target collected during 2016-2022 runs NA64 probes for the first time the well-motivated region of parameter space of benchmark thermal scalar and fermionic dark matter models. No evidence for dark matter production has been found. This allows us to set the most sensitive limits on the $A'$ couplings to photons for masses $m_{A'} \lesssim 0.35$ GeV, and to exclude scalar and Majorana dark matter with the $χ-A'$ coupling $α_D \leq 0.1$ for masses $0.001 \lesssim m_χ\lesssim 0.1$ GeV and $3m_χ\leq m_{A'}$.

In this study, we present the measurement of the intrinsic hadronic contamination at the CERN SPS H4 beamline configured to transport electrons and positrons at 100 GeV/c momentum. The analysis was performed using data collected by the NA64-$e$ experiment in 2022. Our study is based on calorimetric measurements, exploiting the different interaction mechanisms of electrons and hadrons in the NA64-ECAL and NA64-HCAL detectors. We determined the intrinsic hadronic contamination by comparing the results obtained using the nominal electron/positron beamline configuration with those obtained in a dedicated setup, in which only hadrons im**ed on the detector. The significant differences in the experimental signatures of electrons and hadrons motivated our approach, resulting in a small and well-controlled systematic uncertainty for the measurement. Our study allowed us to precisely determine the intrinsic hadronic contamination, which represents a crucial parameter for the NA64 experiment in which the hadron contaminants may result in non-trivial backgrounds. Moreover, we performed dedicated Monte Carlo simulations for the hadron production induced by the primary T2 target. We found a good agreement between measurements and simulation results, confirming the validity of the applied methodology and our evaluation of the intrinsic hadronic contamination.

Microtubules self-organize to form part of the cellular cytoskeleton. They give cells their shape and play a crucial role in cell division and intracellular transport. Strikingly, microtubules driven by motor proteins reorganize into stable mitotic/meiotic spindles with high spatial and temporal precision during successive cell division cycles. Although the topic has been extensively studied, the question remains: What defines such microtubule networks' spatial order and robustness? Here, we aim to approach this problem by analyzing a simplified computational model of radial microtubule self-organization driven by a single type of motor protein -- dyneins. We establish that the spatial order of the steady-state pattern is likely associated with the dynein-driven microtubule motility. At the same time, the structure of the microtubule network is likely linked to its connectivity at the beginning of self-organization. Using the continuous variation of dynein concentration, we reveal hysteresis in microtubule self-organization, ensuring the stability of radial filament structures.

A dynamical system approaching the first-order transition can exhibit a specific type of critical behavior known as self-organized bistability (SOB). It lies in the fact that the system can permanently switch between the coexisting states under the self-tuning of a control parameter. Many of these systems have a network organization that should be taken into account to understand the underlying processes in detail. In the present paper, we theoretically explore an extension of the SOB concept on the scale-free network under coupling constraints. As provided by the numerical simulations and mean-field approximation in the thermodynamic limit, SOB on scale-free networks originates from facilitated criticality reflected on both macro- and mesoscopic network scales. We establish that the appearance of switches is rooted in spatial self-organization and temporal self-similarity of the network's critical dynamics and replicates extreme properties of epileptic seizure recurrences. Our results, thus, indicate that the proposed conceptual model is suitable to deepen the understanding of emergent collective behavior behind neurological diseases.

The extension of Standard Model made by inclusion of additional $U(1)$ gauge $L_μ-L_τ$ symmetry can explain the difference between the measured and the predicted value of the muon magnetic moment and solve the tension in $B$ meson decays. This model predicts the existence of a new, light $Z^\prime$ vector boson, predominantly coupled to second and third generation leptons, whose interaction with electrons is due to a loop mechanism involving muons and taus. In this work, we present a rigorous evaluation of the upper limits in the $Z^\prime$ parameter space, obtained from the analysis of the data collected by the NA64-$e$ experiment at CERN SPS, that performed a search for light dark matter with $2.84\times10^{11}$ electrons im**ing with 100 GeV on an active thick target. The resulting limits, despite being included in a region already investigated by neutrino experiments, touch the muon $g-2$ preferred band for values of the $Z^\prime$ mass of order of 1 MeV. The sensitivity projections for the future high-statistics NA64-$e$ runs demonstrate the power of the electrons/positron beam approach in this theoretical scenario.

We employ here a picosecond ultrasonic technique to study Van der Waals heterostructures. Temporal variation of the reflection coefficient of the Al film that covers Van der Waals hBN/WSe$_2$/hBN heterostructures on a sapphire substrate after the femtosecond laser pulse excitation is carefully measured using an interferometric technique with spatial resolution. The laser pulse generates a broadband sound wave packet in aluminum film propagating perpendicular to the plane direction and partially reflecting from the heterostructural interfaces. The demonstrated technique has enough sensitivity to resolve a WSe$_2$ monolayer embedded in hBN. We apply a multilayered model of the optical and acoustical response that allows to evaluate the mechanical parameters, in particular, rigidity of interfaces, inaccessible from the other measurements. Map** of the Fourier spectra of the response clearly visualizes different composition regions and can therefore serve as an acoustic tomography tool. Our findings demonstrate almost zero acoustic phonon dissipation below 150 GHz at the interfaces and in the layers that makes Van der Waals heterostructures perspective for nano-acoustical applications.

We report the results of a search for a new vector boson ($A'$) decaying into two dark matter particles $χ_1 χ_2$ of different mass. The heavier $χ_2$ particle subsequently decays to $χ_1$ and $A' \to e^- e^+$. For a sufficiently large mass splitting, this model can explain in terms of new physics the recently confirmed discrepancy observed in the muon anomalous magnetic moment at Fermilab. Remarkably, it also predicts the observed yield of thermal dark matter relic abundance. A detailed Monte-Carlo simulation was used to determine the signal yield and detection efficiency for this channel in the NA64 setup. The results were obtained re-analyzing the previous NA64 searches for an invisible decay $A'\to χ\overlineχ$ and axion-like or pseudo-scalar particles $a \to γγ$. With this method, we exclude a significant portion of the parameter space justifying the muon g-2 anomaly and being compatible with the observed dark matter relic density for $A'$ masses from 2$m_e$ up to 390 MeV and mixing parameter $ε$ between $3\times10^{-5}$ and $2\times10^{-2}$.

We report the results of a search for a light pseudoscalar particle $a$ that couples to electrons and decays to $e^+e^-$ performed using the high-energy CERN SPS H4 electron beam. If such pseudoscalar with a mass $\simeq 17$ MeV exists, it could explain the ATOMKI anomaly. We used the NA64 data samples collected in the "visible mode" configuration with total statistics corresponding to $8.4\times 10^{10}$ electrons on target (EOT) in 2017 and 2018. In order to increase sensitivity to small coupling parameter $ε$ we used also the data collected in 2016-2018 in the "invisible mode" configuration of NA64 with a total statistics corresponding to $2.84\times 10^{11}$ EOT. A thorough analysis of both these data samples in the sense of background and efficiency estimations was already performed and reported in our previous papers devoted to the search for light vector particles and axion-like particles (ALP). In this work we recalculate the signal yields, which are different due to different cross section and life time of a pseudoscalar particle $a$, and perform a new statistical analysis. As a result, the region of the two dimensional parameter space $m_a - ε$ in the mass range from 1 to 17.1 MeV is excluded. At the mass of the ATOMKI anomaly the values of $ε$ in the range $2.1 \times 10^{-4} < ε< 3.2 \times 10^{-4}$ are excluded.

We place new bounds on the $S, P, V, A$ coupling strengths to electrons, and set constraints on their contributions to the electron anomalous magnetic moment $a_e$, $|Δa_{X}| \lesssim 10^{-15} - 10^{-13}$ for the $X$ mass region $m_X\lesssim 1$ GeV. These results are an order of magnitude more sensitive compared to the current accuracy on $a_e$ from the electron $g-2$ experiments and recent high-precision determination of the fine structure constant.

The Spin Physics Detector, a universal facility for studying the nucleon spin structure and other spin-related phenomena with polarized proton and deuteron beams, is proposed to be placed in one of the two interaction points of the NICA collider that is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia). At the heart of the project there is huge experience with polarized beams at JINR.
The main objective of the proposed experiment is the comprehensive study of the unpolarized and polarized gluon content of the nucleon. Spin measurements at the Spin Physics Detector at the NICA collider have bright perspectives to make a unique contribution and challenge our understanding of the spin structure of the nucleon. In this document the Conceptual Design of the Spin Physics Detector is presented.

Interaction within an ensemble of coupled nonlinear oscillators induces a variety of collective behaviors. One of the most fascinating is a chimera state which manifests the coexistence of spatially distinct populations of coherent and incoherent elements. Understanding of the emergent chimera behavior in controlled experiments or real systems requires a focus on the consideration of heterogeneous network models. In this study, we explore the transitions in a heterogeneous Kuramoto model under the monotonical increase of the coupling strength and specifically find that this system exhibits a frequency-modulated chimera-like pattern during the explosive transition to synchronization. We demonstrate that this specific dynamical regime originates from the interplay between (the evolved) attractively and repulsively coupled subpopulations. We also show that the above mentioned chimera-like state is induced under weakly non-local, small-world and sparse scale-free coupling and suppressed in globally coupled, strongly rewired and dense scale-free networks due to the emergence of the large-scale connections.

We carried out a model-independent search for light scalar (s) and pseudoscalar axionlike (a) particles that couple to two photons by using the high-energy CERN SPS H4 electron beam. The new particles, if they exist, could be produced through the Primakoff effect in interactions of hard bremsstrahlung photons generated by 100 GeV electrons in the NA64 active dump with virtual photons provided by the nuclei of the dump. The a(s) would penetrate the downstream HCAL module, serving as shielding, and would be observed either through their $a(s)\toγγ$ decay in the rest of the HCAL detector or as events with large missing energy if the a(s) decays downstream of the HCAL. This method allows for the probing the a(s) parameter space, including those from generic axion models, inaccessible to previous experiments. No evidence of such processes has been found from the analysis of the data corresponding to $2.84\times10^{11}$ electrons on target allowing to set new limits on the $a(s)γγ$-coupling strength for a(s) masses below 55 MeV.

A search is performed for a new sub-GeV vector boson ($A'$) mediated production of Dark Matter ($χ$) in the fixed-target experiment, NA64, at the CERN SPS. The $A'$, called dark photon, could be generated in the reaction $ e^- Z \to e^- Z A'$ of 100 GeV electrons dumped against an active target which is followed by the prompt invisible decay $A' \to χ\overlineχ$. The experimental signature of this process would be an event with an isolated electron and large missing energy in the detector. From the analysis of the data sample collected in 2016 corresponding to $4.3\times10^{10}$ electrons on target no evidence of such a process has been found. New stringent constraints on the $A'$ mixing strength with photons, $10^{-5}\lesssim ε\lesssim 10^{-2}$, for the $A'$ mass range $m_{A'} \lesssim 1$ GeV are derived. For models considering scalar and fermionic thermal Dark Matter interacting with the visible sector through the vector portal the 90% C.L. limits $10^{-11}\lesssim y \lesssim 10^{-6}$ on the dark-matter parameter $y = ε^2 α_D (\frac{m_χ}{m_{A'}})^4 $ are obtained for the dark coupling constant $α_D = 0.5$ and dark-matter masses $0.001 \lesssim m_χ\lesssim 0.5 $ GeV. The lower limits $α_D \gtrsim 10^{-3} $ for pseudo-Dirac Dark Matter in the mass region $m_χ\lesssim 0.05 $ GeV are more stringent than the corresponding bounds from beam dump experiments. The results are obtained by using tree level, exact calculations of the $A'$ production cross-sections, which turn out to be significantly smaller compared to the one obtained in the Weizsäcker-Williams approximation for the mass region $m_{A'} \gtrsim 0.1$ GeV.

We present the performance of multiplexed XY resistive Micromegas detectors tested in the CERN SPS 100 GeV/c electron beam at intensities up to 3.3 $\times$ 10$^5$ e$^- $/(s$\cdot$cm$^2$). So far, all studies with multiplexed Micromegas have only been reported for tests with radioactive sources and cosmic rays. The use of multiplexed modules in high intensity environments was not explored due to the effect of ambiguities in the reconstruction of the hit point caused by the multiplexing feature. At the beam intensities analysed in this work and with a multiplexing factor of 5, more than 50% level of ambiguity is introduced. Our results prove that by using the additional information of cluster size and integrated charge from the signal clusters induced on the XY strips, the ambiguities can be reduced to a level below 2%. The tested detectors are used in the CERN NA64 experiment for tracking the incoming particles bending in a magnetic field in order to reconstruct their momentum. The average hit detection efficiency of each module was found to be $\sim$ 96% at the highest beam intensities. By using four modules a tracking resolution of 1.1% was obtained with $\sim$ 85% combined tracking efficiency.

In this paper we present a technique to reject heavy charged particle contamination in the 100 GeV electron beam of the H4 beam line at CERN SPS. The method is based on the detection with BGO scintillators of the synchrotron radiation emitted by the electrons passing through a bending dipole magnet. A 100 GeV $π^-$ beam is used to test the method in the NA64 experiment resulting in a suppression factor of $10^{-5}$ while the efficiency for electron detection is $\sim$95%. The spectra and the rejection factors are in very good agreement with the Monte Carlo simulation. The reported suppression factors are significantly better than previously achieved.

The new conformal Weyl-Dirac theory of gravitation is proposed, which is a gravitational theory in Cartan-Weyl space-time with the Dirac scalar field representing the dark matter model. A static spherically symmetric solution of the field equations in vacuum for a central compact mass is obtained as the metrics conformal to the Yilmaz-Rosen metrics. On the base of this solution one considers a radial movement of an interplanetary spacecraft starting from the Earth. Using the Newton approximation one obtains that the asymptotic line-of-sight velocity in this case depends from the parameters of the solution, and therefore one can obtain on basis of the observable data the values of these parameters.

The A's would decay invisibly into dark matter particles resulting in events with large missing energy. No evidence for such decays was found with 2.75\cdot 10^{9} electrons on target. We set new limits on the γ-A' mixing strength and exclude the invisible A' with a mass < 100 MeV as an explanation of the muon g_μ-2 anomaly.

We obtain new lower and upper bounds for probabilities of unions of events. These bounds are sharp. They are stronger than earlier ones. General bounds maybe applied in arbitrary measurable spaces. We have improved the method that has been introduced in previous papers. We derive new generalizations of the first and second part of the Borel--Cantelli lemma.

In this article a new analytical description of the effective interaction potential for a charged particle in the field of two interfering laser beams is presented. The potential dependence on the lasers intensities, orientation and parameters of the particle entering the considered system is analyzed. It is shown for the case of arbitrary lasers crossing angle that for different values of projectile velocity the attracting potential becomes a scattering one so that the channel axes and borders interchange each other. In addition the projectile radiation spectral distribution is given and general estimations on the expected beam radiation yield are outlined.

The direct interaction of the 4-rotational (Lorentzian) gauge field with the angular orbital momentum of an external field is considered. This interaction appears in a new Poincaré gauge theory of gravitation, in which tetrads are not true gauge fields, but represent some functions of the translational and 4-rotational gauge fields. The given interaction leads to a new effect: the existence of an electronic orbits precession under the action of an intensive external gravitational field (gravidiamagnetic effect), and also substantiates the existence of the direct interaction of the proper angular momentum of a gyroscope with the torsion field, which theoretically can be generated by the rotational angular momentum of the planet the Earth. The latter interaction can be detected by the experiment Gravity Probe B on the satellite orbit.

The results of the complex study of galactic open cluster Trumpler 2 are presented. In order to obtain the proper motions the positions of 2600 stars up to the limit magnitude B ~ 16.25 mag in the area 80x80 arcmin around the cluster were measured on 6 plates with the maximal epoch difference of 63 years. The root-mean error of the relative proper motions is 4.2 mas/yr. The catalogue of BV magnitudes of all the stars in the investigated area was compiled. Astrometric selection of the cluster members within the region of R<16 arcmin from the center of the cluster was made by means of the W.Sanders method. In that field 192 stars were found to have the individual membership probability greater then 85%, 148 of them are situated within the +/-3sigma_(B-V) band around the main sequence of the cluster. They are considered to be cluster members by two criteria. The U-B ~ B-V diagram plotted for the astrometrical cluster members by the data taken from the Washington catalogue of the UBV photometry in the galactic cluster fields (Hoag et al.1961) made it possible to redefine the value of the color excess E(B-V)=0.40 mag. The superposition of the MS of the cluster with the ZAMS Schmidt-Kaler leads to the coincidence at the value of the apparent distance module (V-Mv)=10.50 which corresponds to the distance r=725 pc. The luminosity and mass functions of the Trumpler 2 were constructed and the value of the slope Gamma=-1.90+/-0.22 was determined. The cluster age of 8.913x10^7 yr was determined. It is shown that the red giant on the late stage of the evolution (st N.1095) belongs to cluster and indicates the brightness variability. The possibility that the number of both known and recently discovered variables are cluster members was considered. Tables 2,3,3A,5 will be only available in the electronic form.

The equations of gauge fields which sources are an energy-momentum tensor, orbital and spin momemta, and also a dilatational current of an external field are obtained. A new direct interaction of the Lorentzian gauge field with the orbital momentum of an external field appears, which describes some new effects. Geometrical interpretation of the theory is developed and it is shown that as a result of localization of the Poincaré-Weyl group spacetime becomes a Weyl-Cartan space. Also the geometrical interpretation of a dilaton field as a component of the metric tensor of a tangent space in Weyl-Cartan geometry is proposed.

This equation is used to obtain a self-consistent set of equations of motion for a classical test particle with a spin and a color charge in a color field combined with a gravitational field characterized by curvature and torsion. The resulting equations generalize the Wong equation, which describes the motion of a particle with an isospin, and the Tamm-Good and Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equations, which describe the evolution of a charged-particle spin in an electromagnetic field.
