The present Lecture Notes have been prepared to back up a series of a few seminars given by the author at the Albert Einstein Institute in Potsdam. These Notes aim at reviewing a research project conducted over the last six years about a quite interesting and challenging topic, namely the use of the generalized Kronheimer construction and the generalized McKay correspondence for the crepant resolution $Y^Γ_{[3]} \to \frac{\mathbb{C}^3}Γ$ of orbifold singularities, $Γ$ being s finite subgroup of $\mathrm{SU(3)}$, as a strategic tool to construct holographic dual pairs of $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories in $D=4$ and D3-brane solutions of type IIB supergravity. The project, developed by Ugo Bruzzo with the present author, in various co-authorships with Massimo Bianchi, Anna Fino, Pietro Antonio Grassi, Dimitry Markushevich, Dario Martelli, Mario Trigiante and Umar Shahzad, is still going on and there are a lot of interesting unanswered questions that are illustrated throughout these Lecture Notes and particularly emphasized in its last chapter. The mathematical roots of this project are very robust and ramified in differential geometry, group theory and algebraic geometry. A particularly challenging issue is that of constructing Ricci flat metrics on the total space of line-bundles over compact Kähler manifolds of real dimension four. In that direction the symplectic action/angle formalism turns out to be a winning weapon. The ultimate goal is that of deducing all the aspects of holographic duality from finite group theory or, to be more precise, SU(3) finite subgroups

D3-brane solutions of type IIB supergravity can be obtained by means a classical ansatz involving a harmonic warp factor and two summands, the first being the flat Minkowskian metric of the D3 brane world-sheet and the second a Ricci flat metric on a suitable 6-dimensional transverse space, both twisted by the warp factor. Of particular interest is the case of the total space of thecanonical bundle over a complex Kähler 2-fold. This situation emerges in many cases while considering the resolution of finite quotient singulaties. When the group is $\mathbb{Z}_4$, the complex 2-fold is the second Hirzebruch surface endowed with a Kähler metric having SU(2)xU(1) isometry. There is actually an entire class of such metrics parameterized by a single function, and best described in the AMSY symplectic formalism. We recover the existence of a two parameter subclass of Kähler-Einstein metrics on manifolds that are homeorphic to $S^2\times S^2$, and study in detail this class. The K"ahler-Einstein nature of these manifolds allows the construction of the Ricci flat metric on their canonical bundle via the Calabi Ansatz, which we recast in the AMSY formalism deriving some new elegant formulae. Furthermore we show the full integrability of the differential system of geodesics equations thanks to an additional conserved quantity that we unveil and which is similar to the Carter constant in the case of the Kerr metric.

We analyze the vacuum structure of $\mathcal{N}=3,D=4$ supergravity coupled to 9 vector multiplets with gauge group ${\rm SO}(3)\times {\rm SU}(3)$. Aside from the central $\mathcal{N}=3$ AdS$_4$ vacuum at the origin, on which the supermultiplet structure reproduces the massless sector of M-theory compactified on $\mathrm{N^{0,1,0}}$, we find a rich structure of AdS$_4$ vacua preserving $\mathcal{N}=0,1,2,3$ supersymmetry. These new vacua are arranged in a manifold spanned by scalar fields corresponding to exactly marginal deformations of the dual CFT. This manifold has the form $T^3/K$, where $K$ is a discrete subgroup of the gauge group: $\mathcal{N}=3,2$ and $1$ vacua correspond, respectively, to a point, a line and a surface in the three-dimensional vacuum manifold. We study RG flows from the central $\mathcal{N}=3$ vacuum and elaborate on the possible higher dimensional origin of the new vacua. For the reader's convenience we also provide a review of the embedding tensor formulation of $D=4$, $\mathcal{N}=3$ gauged supergravities. In particular we provide formulas involving the fermion shift tensors and mass matrices in $\mathcal{N}=3$ theories, which can be applied to a generic gauging.

The core of this paper is a novel group-theoretical approach, initiated in 2015 by one of the present authors in collaboration with Alexander Sorin, which allows for a more systematic classification and algorithmic construction of Beltrami flows on torii $\mathbb{R}^3/Λ$ where $Λ$ is a crystallographic lattice. The new hydro-theory, based on the idea of a Universal Classifying Group $\mathfrak{UG}_Λ$, is here revised. We construct the so far missing $\mathfrak{UG}_{Λ_{Hex}}$ for the hexagonal lattice. Mastering the cubic and hexagonal instances, we can cover all cases. The classification relation between Beltrami Flows and contact structures is enlightened. The most promising research direction opened by the present work streams from the fact that the Fourier series expansion of a generic Navier-Stokes solution can be regrouped into an infinite sum of contributions $\mathbf{W}_r$, each associated with a spherical layer of quantized radius $r$ in the momentum lattice and consisting of a superposition of a Beltrami and an anti-Beltrami field, with an analogous decomposition into irreps of the group $\mathfrak{UG}_Λ$ that are variously repeated on higher layers. This crucial property enables the construction of generic Fourier series with prescribed hidden symmetries as candidate solutions of the NS equations.
As a further result of this research programme a complete and versatile system of MATHEMATICA Codes named \textbf{AlmafluidaNSPsystem} has been constructed and is now available through the site of the Wolfram Community. The main message streaming from our constructions is that the more symmetric the Beltrami Flow the highest is the probability of the onset of chaotic trajectories.

We analyze the relevance of the generalized Kronheimer construction for the gauge-gravity correspondence. We study the general structure of IIB supergravity D3-brane solutions on crepant resolutions $Y$ of singularities $\mathbb{C}^3/Γ$ with $Γ$ a finite subgroup of $SU(3)$. Next we concentrate on another essential item for the D3-brane construction, i.e., the existence of a Ricci-flat metric on $Y$, with particular attention to the case $Γ=\mathbb{Z}_4$. We conjecture that on the exceptional divisor the Kronheimer Kähler metric and the Ricci-flat one, that is locally flat at infinity, coincide. The conjecture is shown to be true in the case of the Ricci-flat metric on ${\rm tot} K_{{\mathbb WP}[112]}$ that we construct, which is a partial resolution of $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_4$. For the full resolution we have $Y=\operatorname{tot} K_{\mathbb{F}_{2}}$, where $\mathbb{F}_2$ is the second Hizebruch surface. We try to extend the proof of the conjecture to this case using the one-parameter Kähler metric on $\mathbb{F}_2$ produced by the Kronheimer construction as initial datum in a Monge-Ampère (MA) equation. We exhibit three formulations of this MA equation, one in terms of the Kähler potential, the other two in terms of the symplectic potential; in all cases one can establish a series solution in powers of the fiber variable of the canonical bundle. The main property of the MA equation is that it does not impose any condition on the initial geometry of the exceptional divisor, but uniquely determines all the subsequent terms as local functionals of the initial datum. While a formal proof is still missing, numerical and analytical results support the conjecture. As a by-product of our investigation we have identified some new properties of this type of MA equations that we believe to be so far unknown.

Considering matter coupled supersymmetric Chern-Simons theories in three dimensions we extend the Gaiotto-Witten mechanism of supersymmetry enhancement $\mathcal{N}_3=3\to \mathcal{N}_3=4$ from the case where the hypermultiplets span a flat HyperKähler manifold to that where they live on a curved one. We derive the precise conditions of this enhancement in terms of generalized Gaiotto-Witten identities to be satisfied by the tri-holomorphic moment maps. An infinite class of HyperKähler metrics compatible with the enhancement condition is provided by the Calabi metrics on $T^\star \mathbb{P}^{n}$. In this list we find, for $n=2$ the resolution of the metric cone on $\mathrm{N}^{0,1,0}$ which is the unique homogeneous Sasaki Einstein 7-manifold leading to an $\mathcal{N}_4=3$ compactification of M-theory. This leads to challenging perspectives for the discovery of new relations between the enhancement mechanism in $D=3$, the geometry of M2-brane solutions and also for the dual description of super Chern Simons theories on curved HyperKähler manifolds in terms of gauged fixed supergroup Chern Simons theories. The relevant supergroup is in this case $\mathrm{SU(3|N)}$ where $\mathrm{SU(3)}$ is the flavor group and $\mathrm{U(N)}$ is the color group.

As a continuation of a general program started in two previous publications, in the present paper we study the Kähler quotient resolution of the orbifold $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_4$, comparing with the results of a toric description of the same. In this way we determine the algebraic structure of the exceptional divisor, whose compact component is the second Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb F_2$. We determine the explicit Kähler geometry of the smooth resolved manifold $Y$, which is the total space of the canonical bundle of $\mathbb F_2$. We study in detail the chamber structure of the space of stability parameters (corresponding in gauge theory to the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters) that are involved in the construction of the desingularizations either by generalized Kronheimer quotient, or as algebro-geometric quotients. The walls of the chambers correspond to two degenerations; one is a partial desingularization of the quotient, which is the total space of the canonical bundle of the weighted projective space $\mathbb P[1,1,2]$, while the other is the product of the ALE space $A_1$ by a line, and is related to the full resolution in a subtler way. These geometrical results will be used to look for exact supergravity brane solutions and dual superconformal gauge theories.

The aforementioned embedding is singled out by the identification of $\mathrm{PSL(2,7)}$ with the automorphism group of the Fano plane. Relying on the revealed intrinsic PSL(2,7) symmetry of Englert equation and on the new algorithm we present an exhaustive classification of Englert fluxes. The residual supersymmetries of the corresponding M2-brane solutions associated with the first of the 8 classes into which we have partitioned Englert fluxes are exhaustively analyzed and we show that all residual d=3 supersymmetries with $\mathcal{N} \in \left\{1,2,3,4,5,6\right\}$ are available. Our constructions correspond to a particular case in the category of M2-brane solutions with transverse self-dual fluxes.

We consider super Yang-Mills theory on supermanifolds $\mathcal{M}^{(D|m)}$ using integral forms. The latter are used to define a geometric theory of integration and are essential for a consistent action principle. The construction relies on Picture Changing Operators $\mathbb{Y}^{(0|m)}$, analogous to those introduced in String Theory, that admit the geometric interpretation of Poincaré duals of closed submanifolds of superspace $\mathcal{S}^{(D|0)} \subset \mathcal{M}^{(D|m)}$ having maximal bosonic dimension $D$. We discuss the case of Super-Yang-Mills theory in $D=10$ with $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry and we show how to retrieve its pure-spinor formulation from the rheonomic lagrangian $\mathcal{L}_{rheo}$ of D'Auria, Fré and Da Silva, choosing a suitable $\mathbb{Y}^{(0|m)}_{ps}$. From the same lagrangian $\mathcal{L}_{rheo}$, with another choice $\mathbb{Y}^{(0|m)}_{comp}$ of the PCO, one retrieves the component form of the SYM action. Equivalence of the formulations is ensured when the corresponding PCO.s are cohomologous, which is true, in this case, of $\mathbb{Y}^{(0|m)}_{ps}$ and $\mathbb{Y}^{(0|m)}_{comp}$.

We advocate that a generalized Kronheimer construction of the Kähler quotient crepant resolution $\mathcal{M}_ζ\longrightarrow \mathbb{C}^3/Γ$ of an orbifold singularity where $Γ\subset \mathrm{SU(3)}$ is a finite subgroup naturally defines the field content and interaction structure of a superconformal Chern-Simons Gauge Theory. This is supposedly the dual of an M2-brane solution of $D=11$ supergravity with $\mathbb{C}\times\mathcal{M}_ζ$ as transverse space. We illustrate and discuss many aspects of this of constructions emphasizing that the equation $\pmb{p}\wedge\pmb{p}=0$ which provides the Kähler analogue of the holomorphic sector in the hyperKähler moment map equations canonically defines the structure of a universal superpotential in the CS theory. The kernel of the above equation can be described as the orbit with respect to a quiver Lie group $\mathcal{G}_Γ$ of a locus $L_Γ\subset \mathrm{Hom}_Γ(\mathcal{Q}\otimes R,R)$ that has also a universal definition. We discuss the relation between the coset manifold $\mathcal{G}_Γ/\mathcal{F}_Γ$, the gauge group $\mathcal{F}_Γ$ being the maximal compact subgroup of the quiver group, the moment map equations and the first Chern classes of the tautological vector bundles that are in a one-to-one correspondence with the nontrivial irreps of $Γ$. These first Chern classes provide a basis for the cohomology group $H^2(\mathcal{M}_ζ)$. We discuss the relation with conjugacy classes of $Γ$ and provide the explicit construction of several examples emphasizing the role of a generalized McKay correspondence. The case of the ALE manifold resolution of $\mathbb{C}^2/Γ$ singularities is utilized as a comparison term and new formulae related with the complex presentation of Gibbons-Hawking metrics are exhibited.

We consider D=3 supersymmetric Chern-Simons gauge theories both from the point of view of their formal structure and of their applications to the $\mathrm{AdS_4/CFT_3}$ correspondence. From the structural view-point, we use the new formalism of integral forms in superspace that utilizes the rheonomic Lagrangians and the Picture Changing Operators, as an algorithmic tool providing the connection between different approaches to supersymmetric theories. We provide here the generalization to an arbitrary Kähler manifold with arbitrary gauge group and arbitrary superpotential of the rheonomic lagrangian of D=3 matter coupled gauge theories constructed years ago. From the point of view of the $\mathrm{AdS_4/CFT_3}$ correspondence and more generally of M2-branes we emphasize the role of the Kähler quotient data in determining the field content and the interactions of the Cherns Simons gauge theory when the transverse space to the brane is a non-compact Kähler quotient $K_4$ of some flat variety with respect to a suitable group. The crepant resolutions of ${\mathbb C}^n/Γ$ singularities fall in this category. In the present paper we anticipate the general scheme how the geometrical data are to be utilized in the construction of the D=3 Chern-Simons Theory supposedly dual to the corresponding M2-brane solution.

A simple criterion for the existence of Killing spinors in such backgrounds is established. Englert equation is viewed as the generalization to d=7 of Beltrami equation defined in d=3 and it is trated accordingly. All 2-brane solutions of minimal d=7 supergracity can be uplifted to d=11 and have N > 4 or N = 4 supersymmetry. It is shown that the simple group PSL(2,7) is crystallographic in d=7 having an integral action on the A7 root lattice. By means of this point-group and of the T7 torus obtained quotiening R7 with the A7 root lattice we were able to construct new M2 branes with Englert fluxes and N < 4. In particular we exhibit here an N=1 solution depending on 4-parameters and admitting a large non abelian discrete symmetry, namely G21 = Z3 semidirect product with Z7 = subgroup of PSL(2,7). The dual d=3 field theories have the same symmetries and have complicated non linear interactions.

The latter are the equations of motion for an ${\cal N}=2$ sigma model on 4-dimensional worldvolume (which is taken locally HyperKähler) with a 4-dimensional HyperKähler target space. By means of the 4D twisting procedure originally introduced by Witten for gauge theories and later generalized to 4D sigma-models by Anselmi and Fré, we show that the equations of motion describe triholomophic maps between the worldvolume and the target space. Therefore, the classification of the solutions to the 3-dimensional Beltrami equation can be performed by counting the triholomorphic maps. The counting is easily obtained by using several discrete symmetries. Finally, the similarity with holomorphic maps for ${\cal N}=2$ sigma on Calabi-Yau space prompts us to reformulate the problem of the enumeration of triholomorphic maps in terms of a topological sigma model.

The rich variety of discrete groups that classify the solutions of Beltrami equation, namely the eigenfunctions of the *d operator on a three-torus, are by this newly discovered token injected into the brane world. In the context of mathematical hydrodynamics, we consider the group theory structure which underlies the ABC-flow introduced by Beltrami, Arnold and Childress. Beltrami equation is the eigenstate equation for the first order Laplace-Beltrami operator *d, which we solve by using harmonic analysis. Taking torus T^3 constructed as R^3/L, where L is a crystallographic lattice, we present a general algorithm to construct solutions of Beltrami equation which utilizes as main ingredient the orbits under the action of the point group P_L of three-vectors in the momentum lattice L*. We introduce the new notion of a Universal Classifying Group GU_L which contains all crystallographic space groups as proper subgroups. We show that the *d-eigenfunctions are naturally arranged into irreducible representations of GU_L and by means of a systematic use of the branching rules with respect to various possible subgroups H of GU_L we search and find Beltrami fields with non trivial hidden symmetries. In the case of the cubic lattice the point group P_L is the proper octahedral group O_24 and the Universal Classifying Group is finite group G_1536 of order 1536 which we study in full detail deriving all of its 37 irreducible representations and the associated character table. We show that the O_24 orbits in the cubic lattice are arranged into 48 equivalence classes, the parameters of the corresponding Beltrami vector fields filling all the 37 irreducible representations of G_1536. In this way we obtain an exhaustive classification of all generalized ABC-flows and of their hidden symmetries. We make several conceptual comments about the possible relation of Arnold-Beltrami flows with (supersymmetric) Chern-Simons gauge theories. We also suggest linear generalizations of Beltrami equation to higher odd-dimensions that possibly make contact with M-theory and the geometry of flux-compactifications.

In this paper we address the general problem of including inflationary models exhibiting Starobinsky-like potentials into (symmetric) $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravities. This is done by gauging suitable abelian isometries of the hypermultiplet sector and then truncating the resulting theory to a single scalar field. By using the characteristic properties of the global symmetry groups of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravities we are able to make a general statement on the possible $α$-attractor models which can obtained upon truncation. We find that in symmetric $\mathcal{N}=2$ models group theoretical constraints restrict the allowed values of the parameter $α$ to be $α=1,\,\frac{2}{3},\, \frac{1}{3}$. This confirms and generalizes results recently obtained in the literature. Our analysis heavily relies on the mathematical structure of symmetric $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravities, in particular on the so called $c$-map connection between Quaternionic Kähler manifolds starting from Special Kähler ones. A general statement on the possible consistent truncations of the gauged models, leading to Starobinsky-like potentials, requires the essential help of Tits Satake universality classes. The paper is mathematically self-contained and aims at presenting the involved mathematical structures to a public not only of physicists but also of mathematicians. To this end the main mathematical structures and the general gauging procedure of $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravities is reviewed in some detail.

In this paper we address the question how to discriminate whether the gauged isometry group G_Sigma of the Kahler manifold Sigma that produces a D-type inflaton potential in a Minimal Supergravity Model is elliptic, hyperbolic or parabolic. We show that the classification of isometries of symmetric cosets can be extended to non symmetric Sigma.s if these manifolds satisfy additional mathematical restrictions. The classification criteria established in the mathematical literature are coherent with simple criteria formulated in terms of the asymptotic behavior of the Kahler potential K(C) = 2 J(C) where the real scalar field C encodes the inflaton field. As a by product of our analysis we show that phenomenologically admissible potentials for the description of inflation and in particular alpha-attractors are mostly obtained from the gauging of a parabolic isometry, this being, in particular the case of the Starobinsky model. Yet at least one exception exists of an elliptic alpha-attractor, so that neither type of isometry can be a priori excluded. The requirement of regularity of the manifold Sigma poses instead strong constraints on the alpha-attractors and reduces their space considerably. Curiously there is a unique integrable alpha-attractor corresponding to a particular value of this parameter.

Five distinct models arise, two flat models with respectively a quadratic and a quartic potential and three based on the SU(1,1)/U(1) space where its distinct isometries, elliptic, hyperbolic and parabolic are gauged. Fayet-Iliopoulos terms are introduced in a geometric way and they turn out to be a crucial ingredient in order to describe the de Sitter inflationary phase of the Starobinsky model.

The question whether the integrable one-field cosmologies classified in a previous paper by Fre, Sagnotti and Sorin can be embedded as consistent one-field truncations into Extended Gauged Supergravity or in N=1 supergravity gauged by a superpotential without the use of D-terms is addressed in this paper. The answer is that such an embedding is very difficult and rare but not impossible. Indeed we were able to find two examples of integrable models embedded in Supergravity in this way. Both examples are fitted into N=1 Supergravity by means of a very specific and interesting choice of the superpotential W(z). The question whether there are examples of such an embedding in extended Gauged Supergravity remains open. In the present paper, relying on the embedding tensor formalism we classified all gaugings of the N=2 STU model, confirming, in the absence on hypermultiplets, the uniqueness of the stable de Sitter vacuum found several years ago by Fre, Trigiante and Van Proeyen and excluding the embedding of any integrable cosmological model. A detailed analysis of the space of exact solutions of the first Supergravity embedded integrable cosmological model revealed several new features worth an in depth consideration. When the scalar potential has an extremum at a negative value, the universe necessarily collapses into a Big Crunch notwithstanding its spatial flatness. The causal structure of these universes is quite different from that of the closed, positive curved, universe: indeed in this case the particle and event horizons do not coincide and develop complicated patterns. The cosmological consequences of this unexpected mechanism deserve careful consideration.

In this paper we provide a definition of the D-map, namely of the mathematical construction implicitly utilized by supergravity that associates an axial symmetric Kahler surface to every positive definite potential function V(phi). The properties of the D-map are discussed in general. Then the D-map is applied to the list of integrable cosmological potentials classified by us in a previous publication with A. Sagnotti. Several interesting geometrical and analytical properties of the manifolds in the image of this D-map are discovered and illustrated. As a by-product of our analysis we demonstrate the existence of (integrable) Starobinsky-like potentials that can be embedded into supergravity. Some of them follow from constant curvature Kahler manifolds. In the quest for a microscopic interpretation of inflaton dynamics we present the Ariadne's thread provided by a new mathematical concept that we introduce under the name of axial symmetric descendants of one dimensional special Kahler manifolds. By means of this token we define a clearcut algorithm that to each potential function V(phi) associates a unique 4th order Picard-Fuchs equation of restricted type. Such an equation encodes information on the chiral ring of a superconformal field theory to be sought for, unveiling in this way a microscopic interpretation of the inflaton potential. We conjecture that the physical mechanism at the basis of the transition from a special manifold to its axial symmetric descendant is probably the construction of an Open String descendant of a Closed String model.

In this paper we show that the new approach to the embedding of the inflationary potentials into supergravity, presented in a quite recent paper [11] of Ferrara, Kallosh, Linde and Porrati can be formulated within the framework of standard matter coupled supergravity, without the use of the new minimal auxiliary set and of conformal compensators. The only condition is the existence of a translational Peccei Quinn isometry of the scalar Kahler manifold. We suggest that this embedding strategy based on a nilpotent gauging amounts to a profound Copernican Revolution. The properties of the inflaton potential are encoded in the geometry of some homogeneous one-dimensional Kahler manifolds that now should be regarded as the primary object, possibly providing a link with microscopic physics. We present a simple and elegant formula for the curvature of the Kahler manifold in terms of the potential. Most relevant consequence of the new strategy is that all the integrable potentials quite recently classified in a paper [7] that we have coauthored, are automatically embedded into supergravity and their associated Kahler manifolds demand urgent study. In particular one integrable potential that provides the best fit to PLANCK data seems to have inspiring geometrical properties deserving further study.

We build a number of integrable one--scalar spatially flat cosmologies, which play a natural role in inflationary scenarios, examine their behavior in several cases and draw from them some general lessons on this type of systems, whose potentials involve combinations of exponential functions, and on similar non--integrable ones. These include the need for the scalar to emerge from the initial singularity while climbing up sufficiently steep exponential potentials ("climbing phenomenon") and the inevitable collapse in a big Crunch whenever the scalar tries to settle at negative extrema of the potential. We also elaborate on the links between these types of potentials and "brane supersymmetry breaking", a mechanism that ties together string scale and scale of supersymmetry breaking in a class of orientifold models. We show that, under some assumptions that are spelled out in the text, the extended objects of these vacua can inject inflationary phases with discrete values of the spectral index that are determined by the number of unwrapped dimensions of the branes and by the inverse power with which the string coupling $g_s$ enters their world--volume actions. An NS fivebrane, which is interestingly unstable in this class of models, when wrapped on a small internal cycle would yield a spectral index that is amusingly close to the experimentally favored PLANCK value ns ~ 0.96.

Four dimensional supergravity theories whose scalar manifold is a symmetric coset manifold U[D=4]/Hc are arranged into a finite list of Tits Satake universality classes. Stationary solutions of these theories, spherically symmetric or not, are identified with those of an euclidian three-dimensional sigma-model, whose target manifold is a Lorentzian coset U[D=3]/H* and the extremal ones are associated with H* nilpotent orbits in the K* representation emerging from the orthogonal decomposition of the algebra U[D=3] with respect to H*. It is shown that the classification of such orbits can always be reduced to the Tits-Satake projection and it is a class property of the Tits Satake universality classes. The construction procedure of Bossard et al of extremal multicenter solutions by means of a triangular hierarchy of integrable equations is completed and converted into a closed algorithm by means of a general formula that provides the transition from the symmetric to the solvable gauge. The question of the relation between H* orbits and charge orbits W of the corresponding black holes is addressed and also reduced to the corresponding question within the Tits Satake projection. It is conjectured that on the vanishing locus of the Taub-NUT current the relation between H*-orbit and W-orbit is rigid and one-to-one. All black holes emerging from multicenter solutions associated with a given H* orbit have the same W-type. For the S^3 model we provide a complete survey of its multicenter solutions associated with all of the previously classified nilpotent orbits of sl(2) x sl(2) within g[2,2]. We find a new intrinsic classification of the W-orbits of this model that might provide a paradigm for the analogous classification in all the other Tits Satake universality classes.

In this paper we consider the problem of classification of nilpotent orbits for the pseudo-quaternionic coset manifolds U/H* obtained in the time-like dimensional reduction of N = 2 supergravity models based on homogeneous symmetric special geometries. Within the D=3 approach this classification amounts to a classification of regular and singular extremal black hole solutions of supergravity. We show that the pattern of such orbits is a universal property depending only on the Tits-Satake universality class of the considered model, the number of such classes being five. We present a new algorithm for the classification and construction of the nilpotent orbits for each universality class which is based on an essential use of the Weyl group W of the Tits Satake subalgebra U_{TS} of U and on a certain subgroup W_H thereof. The splitting of orbits of the full group Uinto suborbits with respect to the stability subgroup H* is shown to be governed by the structure of the discrete coset W/W_H. For the case of the universality class SO(4,5) /[SO(2,3) x SO(2,2)] we derive the complete list of nilpotent orbits which happens to contain 37 elements. We also show how the universal orbits are regularly embedded in all the members of the class that are infinite in number. As a matter of check we apply our new algorithm also to the Tits Satake class G_(2,2)/[SL(2)x SL(2)] confirming the previously obtained result encompassing 7 nilpotent orbits. Perspectives for future developments based on the obtained results are outlined.

In this paper we apply in a systematic way a previously developed integration algorithm of the relevant Lax equation to the construction of spherical symmetric, asymptotically flat black hole solutions of N=2 supergravities with symmetric Special Geometry. Our main goal is the classification of these black-holes according to the H*-orbits in which the space of possible Lax operators decomposes, H* being the isotropy group of scalar manifold originating from time-like dimensional reduction of supergravity from D=4 to D=3 dimensions. The main result of our investigation is the construction of three universal tensors, extracted from quadratic and quartic powers of the Lax operator, that are capable of classifying both regular and nilpotent H* orbits of Lax operators. Our tensor based classification is compared, in the case of the simple one-field model S^3, to the algebraic classification of nilpotent orbits and it is shown to provide a simple and practical discriminating method. We present a detailed analysis of the S^3 model and its black hole solutions, discussing the Liouville integrability of the corresponding dynamical system. By means of the Kostant-representation of a generic Lie algebra element, we were able to develop an algorithm which produces the necessary number of hamiltonians in involution required by Liouville integrability of generic orbits. The degenerate orbits correspond to extremal black-holes and are nilpotent. We analyze these orbits in some detail working out different representatives thereof and showing that the relation between H* orbits and critical points of the geodesic potential is not one-to-one. Finally we present the conjecture that our newly identified tensor classifiers are universal and able to label all regular and nilpotent orbits in all homogeneous symmetric Special Geometries.

Stationary black holes of massless supergravity theories are described by certain geodesic curves on the target space that is obtained after dimensional reduction over time. When the target space is a symmetric coset space we make use of the group-theoretical structure to prove that the second order geodesic equations are integrable in the sense of Liouville, by explicitly constructing the correct amount of Hamiltonians in involution. This implies that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism can be applied, which proves that all such black hole solutions, including non-extremal solutions, possess a description in terms of a (fake) superpotential. Furthermore, we improve the existing integration method by the construction of a Lax integration algorithm that integrates the second order equations in one step instead of the usual two step procedure. We illustrate this technology with a specific example.

Hereby we complete the proof of integrability of the Lax systems, based on pseudo-Riemannian coset manifolds G/H^{*}, we recently presented in a previous paper [arXiv:0903.2559]. Supergravity spherically symmetric black hole solutions have been shown to correspond to geodesics in such manifolds and, in our previous paper, we presented the proof of Liouville integrability of such differential systems, their integration algorithm and we also discussed the orbit structure of their moduli space in terms of conserved hamiltonians. There is a singular cuspidal locus in this moduli space which needs a separate construction. This locus contains the orbits of Nilpotent Lax operators corresponding to extremal Black Holes. Here we intrinsically characterize such a locus in terms of the hamiltonians and we present the complete integration algorithm for the Nilpotent Lax operators. The algorithm is finite, requires no limit procedure and it is solely defined in terms of the initial data. For the SL(3;R)/SO(1,2) coset we give an exhaustive classification of all orbits, regular and singular, so providing general solutions for this case. Finally we show that our integration algorithm can be generalized to generic non-diagonalizable (in particular nilpotent) Lax matrices not necessarily associated with symmetric spaces.

As a by product we derive the explicit integration algorithm associated with all symmetric spaces U/H^{*} relevant to the description of time-like and space-like p-branes. The most important consequence of our approach is the explicit construction of a complete set of conserved involutive hamiltonians h_α that are responsible for integrability and provide a new tool to classify flows and orbits. They are obtained by "ghostifying" the MC forms and extending the differential d to a BRST differential. From the superalgebras G =Osp(N|4) we single out different subalgebras H contained in G associated with the different cosets G/H: each choice of H leads to a different weakening of the pure spinor constraints. In each case, the number of parameter is counted and we show that in the cases of Osp(6|4)/U(3) x SO(1,3), Osp(4|4)/SO(3) x SO(1,3) and finally Osp(4|4) U(2)} x SO(1,3) the bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom match in order to provide a c=0 superconformal field theory. The key point in establishing the integration algorithm is provided by an upper triangular embedding of the solvable Lie algebra associated with U/H into SL(N,R) which always exists. In this context we establish a remarkable relation between the arrow of time and the properties of the Weyl group. The asymptotic states of the develo** Universe are in one-to-one correspondence with the elements of the Weyl group which is a property of the Tits Satake universality classes and not of their single representatives. Furthermore the Weyl group admits a natural ordering in terms of L(T), the number of reflections with respect to the simple roots and the direction of time flows is always towards increasing L(T), which plays the unexpected role of an entropy.

In the case where the effective sigma model is on a maximally split non--compact coset U/H (maximal supergravity or subsectors of lower supersymmetry supergravities) we are also able to construct a completely explicit analytic integration algorithm, adapting a method introduced by Kodama et al in a recent paper. The properties of the general integral are particularly suggestive. Initial data are represented by a pair C_0, h_0 where C_0 is in the CSA of the Lie algebra of U and h_0 in H/W is in the compact subgroup H modded by the Weyl group of U. At asymptotically early and asymptotically late times the Lax operator is always in the Cartan subalgebra and due to the iso-spectral property the two limits differ only by the action of some element of the Weyl group. Hence the entire cosmic evolution can be seen as a billiard scattering with quantized angles defined by the Weyl group. The solution algorithm realizes a map from H}/W into W.

In this paper we pursue further a programme initiated in a previous work and aimed at the construction, classification and property investigation of time dependent solutions of supergravity (superstring backgrounds) through a systematic exploitation of U-duality hidden symmetries. This is done by first reducing to D=3 where the bosonic part of the theory becomes a sigma model on E_{8(8)}/SO(16), solving the equations through an algorithm that produces general integrals for any chosen regular subalgebra G_r of E_{8(8)} and then oxiding back to D=10. Different oxidations and hence different physical interpretations of the same solutions are associated with different embeddings of G_r. We show how such embeddings constitute orbits under the Weyl group and we study the orbit space. This is relevant to associate candidate superstring cosmological backgrounds to space Dp-brane configurations that admit microscopic descriptions. In particular in this paper we show that there is just one Weyl orbit of A_r subalgebras for r < 6$. The orbit of the previously found A_2 solutions, together with space--brane representatives contains a pure metric representative that corresponds to homogeneous Bianchi type 2A cosmologies in D=4 based on the Heisenberg algebra. As a byproduct of our methods we obtain new exact solutions for such cosmologies with and without matter. We present a thorough investigation of their properties.

The new first order, rheonomic, kappa-supersymmetric formalism recently introduced by us for the world-volume action of the D3-brane is extended to the case of D5-branes. This extension requires the dual formulation of the Free Differential Algebra of type IIB supergravity in terms of 6-form gauge potentials which was so far missing and is given here. Furthermore relying on our new approach we are able to write the D5-world volume action in a manifestly SL(2,R) covariant form. This is important in order to solve the outstanding problem of finding the appropriate boundary actions of D3-branes on smooth ALE manifolds with twisted fields. The application of our results to this problem is however postponed to a subsequent publication.

We introduce a new first order formulation of world-volume actions for p-branes with k-supersymmetry. In this language, which involves more auxiliary fields compensated by more local symmetries, the action is provided by a very compact, simple and elegant formula applicable to any supergravity background. The k-supersymmetry variation against which it is invariant is obtained from the bulk supersymmetries by means of a projector that has a simple expression in terms of the auxiliary fields. The distinctive feature of our formalism is that all fermion fields are hidden into the definition of the curvatures and the action is formally the same, in terms of these differential forms as it would be in a purely bosonic theory. Typically our new formulation enables one to discuss the correct boundary actions for non trivial supergravity Dp-brane bulk solutions like the D3-brane solution on smooth ALE manifolds with flux recently constructed in the literature

These solutions have two Killing spinors and thus preserve $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. They are expressed in terms of a quasi harmonic function $H$ (the ``warp factor''), whose properties was studied in detail in the case of the simplest ALE, namely the Eguchi-Hanson manifold. The equation for $H$ was identified as an instance of the confluent Heun equation.

We construct a new family of classical BPS solutions of type IIB supergravity describing 3-branes transverse to a 6-dimensional space with topology R^2*ALE. They are characterized by a non-trivial flux of the supergravity 2-forms through the homology 2-cycles of a generic smooth ALE manifold. Our solutions have two Killing spinors and thus preserve N=2 supersymmetry. They are expressed in terms of a quasi harmonic function H (the ``warp factor''), whose properties we study in the case of the simplest ALE, namely the Eguchi-Hanson manifold. The equation for H is identified as an instance of the confluent Heun equation. We write explicit power series solutions and solve the recurrence relation for the coefficients, discussing also the relevant asymptotic expansions. While, as in all such N=2 solutions, supergravity breaks down near the brane, the smoothing out of the vacuum geometry has the effect that the warp factor is regular in a region near the cycle. We interpret the behavior of the warp factor as describing a three-brane charge ``smeared'' over the cycle and consider the asymptotic form of the geometry in that region, showing that conformal invariance is broken even when the complex type IIB 3-form field strength is assumed to vanish. We conclude with a discussion of the basic features of the gauge theory dual.

In this series of lectures I present a review of the geometric structures of supergravity in diverse dimensions mostly relevant to p-brane physics and to pinpoint the correspondence between the macroscopic and microscopic description of branes. In particular I review duality transformations, coset manifold structures and the general steps involved by the process of gauging supergravity lagrangians both with respect to compact, non compact and non semisimple groups. I focus specifically on the issue of the Domain Wall field theory correspondence and its relation with the gaugings of supergravity in p+2 dimensions. A complete review of the geometries involved by D=5, N=2 supergravity and of its most general form is given with emphasis on the problem of finding smooth supersymmetric realizations of the Randall Sundrum scenarios. I also give a general review of the algebraic machinery involved by the Solvable Lie algebra description of the scalar manifolds of supergravity and I emphasize its distinguished role in pinpointing the superstring interpretation of supergravity p brane solutions and the macroscopic/microscopic correspondence.

We discuss a general feature of Freund Rubin compactifications that was previously overlooked. It consist in a curious pairing, which we call a shadow relation, of completely different (in terms of spin and mass) fields of the dimensionally reduced theory. Particularly interesting is the case where the compactification preserves a certain amount of supersymmetry, giving rise to a shadowing phenomenon between whole supermultiplets of fields. In particular, there are strong suggestions about the consistency of a massive truncation of 11D supergravity to the massless modes of the graviton supermultiplet plus the massive modes of its shadow partner. This fact has important consequences in the ${\cal N}=2$ and ${\cal N}=3$ cases, which seem to realize respectively a Higgs or a superHiggs phenomenon. In other words, we are led to reinterpret the dimensionally reduced theory as a spontaneously broken phase of some higher (super)symmetric theory.

We discuss a general pairing that occurs in compactifications of M-theory on AdS_4 x X^7 backgrounds between massless ultra short multiplets and their massive shadows, namely certain universal long multiplets with fixed protected dimensions. In particular we consider the shadow of the short graviton multiplet in N=3 compactifications. It turns out to be a massive spin 3/2 multiplet with scale dimension E_0=3 and with the quantum numbers of a super-Higgs multiplet. Hence each N=3 AdS_4 x X^7 vacuum is actually to be interpreted as a spontaneously broken phase of an N=4 theory. Comparison with standard gauged N=4 supergravity in 4 dimensions reveals the unexpected bound E_0<3 on the dimension of the broken gravitino multiplet. This hints to the existence of new versions of extended supergravities, in particular N=4 where such upper bounds are evaded and where all possible vacua have a reduced supersymmetry N_0<N. We name them shadow supergravities. In particular, using arguments based on the solvable Lie algebra parametrization of the scalar manifold, we discuss the possible structure of shadow N=4 supergravity. Using our previous results on the SCFT dual of the AdS_4 x N^{0,1,0} vacuum we discuss the SCFT realization of the universal N=3 shadow multiplet. RG flows from an N=4 to an N=3 phase are ruled out by the fact that the N=4 vacuum is at infinite distance in moduli space, denoting the presence of a topology change.

In this paper we investigate three-dimensional superconformal gauge theories with N=3 supersymmetry. Independently from specific models, we derive the shortening conditions for unitary representations of the Osp(3|4) superalgebra and we express them in terms of differential constraints on three dimensional N=3 superfields. We find a ring structure underlying these short representations, which is just the direct generalization of the chiral ring structure of N=2 theories. When the superconformal field theory is realized on the world-volume of an M2-brane such superfield ring is the counterpart of the ring defined by the algebraic geometry of the 8-dimensional cone transverse to the brane. This and other arguments identify the N=3 superconformal field theory dual to M-theory compactified on AdS_4 x N^{0,1,0}. It is an N=3 gauge theory with SU(N) x SU(N) gauge group coupled to a suitable set of hypermultiplets, with an additional Chern Simons interaction. The AdS/CFT correspondence can be directly verified using the recently worked out Kaluza Klein spectrum of N^{0,1,0} and we find a perfect match. We also note that besides the usual set of BPS conformal operators dual to the lightest KK states, we find that the composite operators corresponding to certain massive KK modes are organized into a massive spin 3/2 N=3 multiplet that might be identified with the super-Higgs multiplet of a spontaneously broken N=4 theory. We investigate this intriguing and inspiring feature in a separate paper.

On the algebraic side we consider the superalgebra Osp(N|4) and we study the double interpretation of its irreducible representations either as supermultiplets of particle states in the bulk or as conformal superfields on the boundary. On the lagrangian field theory side we construct, using rheonomy rather than superfield techniques, the generic form of an N=2, d=3 gauge theory. Indeed the superconformal multiplets are supposed to be composite operators in a suitable gauge theory.

We reconsider the Kaluza Klein compactifications of D=11 supergravity on AdS_4x(G/H)_7 manifolds that were classified in the eighties, in the modern perspective of AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence. We focus on one of the three N=2 cases: (G/H)_7=M^{111}=SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)/SU(2)xU(1)'xU(1)''. Relying on the systematic use of the harmonic analysis techniques developed in the eighties by one of us (P. Fre') with R. D'Auria, we derive the complete spectrum of long, short and massless Osp(2|4)xSU(3)xSU(2) unitary irreducible representations obtained in this compactification. Our result also provides a general scheme for the other N=2 compactifications. Furthermore, it is a necessary comparison term in the AdS_4/CFT_3 correspondence: the complete AdS/CFT match of the spectra that we obtain will provide a much more stringent proof of the AdS/CFT correspondence than in the S^7 case, since the structure of the superconformal field theory on the M2-brane world volume must be such as to reproduce, at the level of composite operators, the flavor group representations, the conformal dimensions and the hypercharges that we obtain in the present article. The investigation of the match is left to future publications. Here we provide an exhaustive construction of the Kaluza Klein side of our spectroscopy.
