Wiener-Hopf indices of unimodular functions on the imaginary axis
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the Wiener-Hopf indices of unimodular rational matrix functions on the imaginary axis. These indices play a role in the Fredholm theory for Wiener-Hopf integral operators. Our main result gives formulas for the Wiener-Hopf indices in terms of the matrices appearing in realizations of the factors in a Douglas-Shapiro-Shields factorization of the unimodular function. Two… ▽ More

Wiener-Hopf indices of unimodular functions on the unit circle, revisited
Abstract: Inspired by the paper of Groenewald, Kaashoek and Ran (Wiener-Hopf indices of unitary functions on the unit circle in terms of realizations and related results on Toeplitz operators. \emph{Indag. Math.} 28, (2017), 649-710), we present an operator-theoretic approach to provide further insight and simpler computational formulas for the Wiener-Hopf indices of a rational matrix valued function taking… ▽ More

All solutions to an operator Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem
Abstract: The main results presented in this paper provide a complete and explicit description of all solutions to the left tangential operator Nevanlinna- Pick interpolation problem assuming the associated Pick operator is strictly positive. The complexity of the solutions is similar to that found in descriptions of the sub-optimal Nehari problem and variation on the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem i… ▽ More

State space formulas for a suboptimal rational Leech problem II: Parametrization of all solutions
Abstract: For the strictly positive case (the suboptimal case), given stable rational matrix functions $G$ and $K$, the set of all $H^\infty$ solutions $X$ to the Leech problem associated with $G$ and $K$, that is, $G(z)X(z)=K(z)$ and $\sup_{|z|\leq 1}\|X(z)\|\leq 1$, is presented as the range of a linear fractional representation of which the coefficients are presented in state space form. The matrices inv… ▽ More

State space formulas for a suboptimal rational Leech problem I: Maximum entropy solution
Abstract: For the strictly positive case (the suboptimal case) the maximum entropy solution $X$ to the Leech problem $G(z)X(z)=K(z)$ and $\|X\|_\infty=\sup_{|z|\leq 1}\|X(z)\|\leq 1$, with $G$ and $K$ stable rational matrix functions, is proved to be a stable rational matrix function. An explicit state space realization for $X$ is given, and $\|X\|_\infty$ turns out to be strictly less than one. The matrice… ▽ More

State space formulas for stable rational matrix solutions of a Leech problem
Abstract: Given stable rational matrix functions $G$ and $K$, a procedure is presented to compute a stable rational matrix solution $X$ to the Leech problem associated with $G$ and $K$, that is, $G(z)X(z)=K(z)$ and $\sup_{|z|\leq 1}\|X(z)\|\leq 1$. The solution is given in the form of a state space realization, where the matrices involved in this realization are computed from state space realizations of the… ▽ More

Coupling and relaxed commutant lifting
Abstract: A Redheffer type description of the set of all contractive solutions to the relaxed commutant lifting problem is given. The description involves a set of Schur class functions which is obtained by combining the method of isometric coupling with results on isometric realizations. For a number of special cases, including the case of the classical commutant lifting theorem, the description yields a p… ▽ More

Optimal solutions to matrix-valued Nehari problems and related limit theorems
Abstract: In a 1990 paper Helton and Young showed that under certain conditions the optimal solution of the Nehari problem corresponding to a finite rank Hankel operator with scalar entries can be efficiently approximated by certain functions defined in terms of finite dimensional restrictions of the Hankel operator. In this paper it is shown that these approximants appear as optimal solutions to restricted… ▽ More

PageRank for ranking authors in co-citation networks
Abstract: Google's PageRank has created a new synergy to information retrieval for a better ranking of Web pages. It ranks documents depending on the topology of the graphs and the weights of the nodes. PageRank has significantly advanced the field of information retrieval and keeps Google ahead of competitors in the search engine market. It has been deployed in bibliometrics to evaluate research impact, ye… ▽ More

A time-variant norm constrained interpolation problem arising from relaxed commutant lifting
Abstract: A time-variant analogue of an interpolation problem equivalent to the relaxed commutant lifting problem is introduced and studied. In a somewhat less general form the problem already appears in the analysis of the set of all solutions to the three chain completion problem. The interpolants are upper triangular operator matrices of which the columns induce contractive operators. The set of all so… ▽ More

Relaxed commutant lifting: an equivalent version and a new application
Abstract: This paper presents a few additions to commutant lifting theory. An operator interpolation problem is introduced and shown to be equivalent to the relaxed commutant lifting problem. Using this connection a description of all solutions of the former problem is given. Also a new application, involving bounded operators induced by $H^2$ operator-valued functions, is presented.
