Abstract:
We report on the low-temperature ($T <$ 120 K) thermal expansion of the bismuth-based topological semimetal $β$-PtBi$_2$ and topological superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd candidates. The linear thermal-expansion coefficient of tetragonal $β$-Bi$_2$Pd shows a pronounced anisotropy between the $a$- and $c$-axis while the volume thermal-expansion coefficient $α_V$($β$-Bi$_2$Pd) is considerable larger than…

We report on the low-temperature ($T <$ 120 K) thermal expansion of the bismuth-based topological semimetal $β$-PtBi$_2$ and topological superconductor $β$-Bi$_2$Pd candidates. The linear thermal-expansion coefficient of tetragonal $β$-Bi$_2$Pd shows a pronounced anisotropy between the $a$- and $c$-axis while the volume thermal-expansion coefficient $α_V$($β$-Bi$_2$Pd) is considerable larger than $α_V$($β$-PtBi$_2$). The coefficient $α_V$($β$-PtBi$_2$) nearly matches the experimental specific heat, from which a Debye temperature $θ_D =$ 199 K is obtained. On the other hand, $α_V$($β$-Bi$_2$Pd) reasonably fits the Debye model with $θ_D =$ 138 K, extracted from the low-temperature specific heat. An almost constant Grüneisen parameter $Γ\approx$ 2 is obtained for both compounds. No magnetostriction is observed in any of both compounds up to $μ_0 H =$ 16 T. We compare our results with other Bi-based topological materials.

Abstract:
We present a theoretical analysis of the magnetocaloric effect in the frustrated antiferromagnet \Eu. We present a theoretical analysis of the magnetocaloric effect in the frustrated antiferromagnet \Eu. Monte Carlo simulations indicate a large magnetic entropy change $ΔS_M^{\text{max}} \sim 5.14$ J kg$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ at $T=2.45$K for a moderate change in the external magnetic field $ΔB=1.2$ Tesla. The highest value of $ΔS_M$ seems to be associated with the presence of a multicritical point in the magnetic field versus temperature phase diagram (at $B_m\sim 1.2$ Tesla and $T_m\sim 2.2$ K) but it persists with similar large values for a broad range of temperatures $T\lesssim T_m$. Single crystal \Eu~magnetization vs magnetic field experiments allowed us to obtain the magnetocaloric effect for $T>2$ K. The results are consistent with the theoretical analysis and show a large magnetocaloric effect for $T\sim 2.5$ K. Finally, we present a phenomenological Landau functional analysis that provides a simplified description of the phase diagram and of the magnetocaloric effect. Although the magnetic frustration in this system leads to a rich phase diagram, we found no clear indication that it plays a significant role enhancing the magneticaloric effect, other than by reducing the transition temperatures and fields.

We present a minimal model that provides a description of the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of \Eu. The model contains two exchange coupling parameters, which are calculated using Density Functional Theory, and a local easy axis magnetic anisotropy term. The classical ground state of the system is a generalization of the well known 120$^\circ$ structure observed in triangular antiferromagnets. Monte Carlo simulations show two phase transitions as a function of the temperature. With increasing temperature, the system transitions from the ground state into a high-entropy collinear antiferromagnet, which in turn at higher temperatures presents a second order transition to a paramagnetic state. A high enough external magnetic field parallel to the anisotropy axis produces a spin-flop transition at low temperatures. The field also reduces the temperature range of stability of the collinear antiferromagnet phase and leads to a single phase transition as a function of the temperature. The reported behavior of the specific heat, the magnetization, and the magnetic susceptibility is in agreement with the available experimental data. Finally, we present the magnetic phase diagrams for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the easy axis.

CeCoSi is an intermetallic antiferromagnet with a very unusual temperature-pressure phase diagram: at ambient pressure it orders below $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 8.8$ K, while application of hydrostatic pressure induces a new magnetically ordered phase with exceptionally high transition temperature of $\sim40$ K at 1.5 GPa. We studied the magnetic properties and the pressure-induced magnetic phase of CeCoSi by means of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and heat capacity measurements. At ambient pressure CeCoSi orders into a simple commensurate AFM structure with a reduced ordered moment of only $m_{\mathrm{Ce}} = 0.37(6)$ $μ_{\mathrm{B}}$. Specific heat and low-energy INS indicate a significant gap in the low-energy magnon excitation spectrum in the antiferromagnetic phase, with the CEF excitations located above 10 meV. Hydrostatic pressure gradually shifts the energy of the magnon band towards higher energies, and the temperature dependence of the magnons measured at 1.5 GPa is consistent with the phase diagram. Moreover, the CEF excitations are also drastically modified under pressure.

Abstract:
We studied $ab$-plane transport properties in single crystals of the superconductor $β$-FeSe up to 16 T. In the normal state, below 90 K, the crystals present a strongly anisotropic positive magnetoresistance that becomes negligible above that temperature. In the superconducting state (T$_c$=8.87(5) K) the upper critical field anisotropy $H$$_{c2}$$\parallel$$ab$ / $H$$_{c2}$$\parallel$$c$ changes…

We studied $ab$-plane transport properties in single crystals of the superconductor $β$-FeSe up to 16 T. In the normal state, below 90 K, the crystals present a strongly anisotropic positive magnetoresistance that becomes negligible above that temperature. In the superconducting state (T$_c$=8.87(5) K) the upper critical field anisotropy $H$$_{c2}$$\parallel$$ab$ / $H$$_{c2}$$\parallel$$c$ changes with temperature and the angular dependence of the dissipation for fixed temperatures and fields reflects a strongly anisotropic behavior. Our results make evident that multiband effects are needed to describe the measured transport properties. We model the magnetoresistance and upper critical field behavior with a two-band model showing that the diffusivities ratio parameter remains unchanged going from the normal to the superconducting state.

We found that this material is a ferrimagnet (Tc ~ 100 K) which possesses a very distinctive and uncommon feature in its virgin curve of the hysteresis loops. We observe that bellow 20 K it lies outside the hysteresis cycle, and this feature was found to be an indication of a microscopically irreversible process possibly involving the interplay of competing antiferromagnetic interactions that hinder the initial movement of domain walls. This initial magnetic state is overcome by applying a temperature dependent characteristic field. Above this field, an isothermal magnetic demagnetization of the samples yield a ground state different from the initial thermally demagnetized one.

All samples are monoclinic, space group P21/n, as obtained from Rietveld analysis of X-ray powder diffraction patterns. The distribution of M2+ and Sb5+ among the two octahedral sites have 3% of disorder for M2+ = Ni2+, whereas for M2+ = Mn2+ and Co2+ less disorder is found. The three samples have an antiferromagnetic transition, due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between M2+ through super-superexchange paths M2+ - O2- - Sb5+ - O2- - M2+. Transition temperatures are low: 8, 10 and 17 K for Mn2+, Co2+, and Ni2+ respectively, as a consequence of the relatively long distances between the magnetic ions M2+. Besides, for LaPbMnSbO6 a small transition at 45 K was found, with ferrimagnetic characteristics, possibly as a consequence of a small disorder between Mn2+ and Sb5+. This disorder would give additional and shorter interaction paths: superexchange Mn2+ - O2- - Mn2+.

We have performed a combined study of magnetization hysteresis loops and time dependence of the magnetization in a broad temperature range for the ferrimagnetic La2Ni(Ni1/3Sb2/3)O6 double perovskite. This material has a ferrimagnetic order transition at ~100 K and at lower temperatures (~ 20 K) shows the signature of a frustrated state due to the presence of two competing magnetic exchange interactions. The temperature dependence of the coercive field shows an important upturn below the point where the frustrated state sets in. The use of the magnetization vs. applied magnetic field hysteresis data, together with the magnetization vs. time data provides a unique opportunity to distinguish between different scenarios for the low temperature regime. From our analysis, a strong domain wall pinning results the best scenario for the low temperature regime. For temperatures larger than 20K the adequate scenario seems to correspond to a weak domain wall pinning.
