A CO Survey of Young Planetary Nebulae

We report the results of a sensitive survey of young planetary nebulae in the CO J=2-1 line that significantly increases the available data on warm, dense, molecular gas in the early phases of planetary nebula formation. The observations were made using the IRAM 30 m telescope with the 3 by 3 pixel Heterodyne Receiver Array (HERA). The array provides an effective means of discriminating the CO emission of planetary nebulae in the galactic plane from contaminating emission of interstellar clouds along the line of sight. 110 planetary nebulae were observed in the survey and 40 were detected. The results increase the number of young planetary nebulae with known CO emission by approximately a factor of two. The CO spectra yield radial velocities for the detected nebulae, about half of which have uncertain or no velocity measurements at optical wavelengths. The CO profiles range from parabolic to double-peaked, tracing the evolution of structure in the molecular gas. The line widths are significantly larger than on the Asymptotic Giant Branch, and many of the lines show extended wings, which probably result from the effects on the envelopes of high velocity jets.

LP 349-25: a new tight M8V binary

Abstract:
We present the discovery of a tight M8V binary, with a separation of only 1.2 astronomical units, obtained with the PUEO and NACO adaptive optics systems, respectively at the CFHT and VLT telescopes. The estimated period of LP 349-25 is approximately 5 years, and this makes it an excellent candidate for a precise mass measurement.

Metallicity of M dwarfs I. A photometric calibration and impact on the mass-luminosity relation at the bottom of the main sequence

We obtained high resolution ELODIE and CORALIE spectra for both components of 20 wide visual binaries composed of an F-, G- or K-dwarf primary and an M-dwarf secondary. We analyse the well understood spectra of the primaries to determine metallicities ([Fe/H]) for these 20 systems, and hence for their M dwarf components. We pool these metallicities with determinations from the literature to obtain a precise (+- 0.2 dex) photometric calibration of M dwarf metallicities. This calibration represents a breakthrough in a field where discussions have had to remain largely qualitative, and it helps us demonstrate that metallicity explains most of the large dispersion in the empirical V-band mass-luminosity relation. We examine the metallicity of the two known M-dwarf planet-host stars, Gl 876 (+0.02 dex) and Gl 436 (-0.03 dex), in the context of preferential planet formation around metal-rich stars. We finally determine the metallicity of the 47 brightest single M dwarfs in a volume limited sample, and compare the metallicity distributions of solar-type and M-dwarf stars in the solar neighbourhood.

We present a spectroscopic investigation of two hitherto unstudied galactic planetary nebulae (MeWe 1-10 and MeWe 1-11) and one candidate object (MeWe 2-5). The candidate object clearly has been identified as a bipolar hourglass shaped PN. The galactic foreground extinction was derived and using photoionization models with CLOUDY the two round objects were classified as highly evolved nebulae.

We present here the results of astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic observations leading to the determination of the orbit and dynamical masses of the binary L dwarf 2MASSW J0746425+2000321. High angular resolution observations spread over almost 4 years and obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), and a the W. M. Keck Observatory (Keck) allow us to cover 36% of the period, corresponding to 60% of the orbit, and, for the first time, to derive a precise estimate of the total and individual masses of such a late-type object. We find an orbital period of 3850.9$^{+904}_{-767}$ days. The corresponding total mass is 0.146$^{+0.016}_{-0.006}$ M$_{\sun}$, with uncertainties depending on the distance. Spatially resolved low resolution optical (550--1025 nm) spectra have been obtained with HST/STIS, allowing us to measure the spectral types of the two components (L0$\pm$0.5 for the primary and L1.5$\pm$0.5 for the secondary). We also present precise photometry of the individual components measured on the high angular resolution images obtained with HST/ACS and WFPC2 (visible), VLT/NACO (J, H and Ks bands) and Keck I (Ks) band). These spectral and photometric measurements enable us to estimate their effective temperatures and mass ratio, and to place the object accurately in a H--R diagram. The binary system is most likely formed by a primary with a mass of 0.085$\pm$0.010 M$_{\sun}$ and a secondary with a mass of 0.066$\pm$0.006 M$_{\sun}$, thus clearly substellar, for an age of approximately 300$\pm$150 Myr. H$α$ variability indicates chromospheric and/or magnetic activity.

The 2.1 mJy flux in the LW2 filter (5.0-8.5 microns) of the Infrared Space Observatory (see 1999A&A...350..883) likely corresponds to an infrared excess, suggesting the presence of circumstellar material. Proper motion and photometric measurements, as well as the Halpha activity, confirm membership in the R-CrA star forming region. If confirmed by further observations, DENIS-P J185950.9-370632 would be the first accreting sub-stellar multiple system observed to date.

Discovery of very nearby ultracool dwarfs from DENIS

We report new spectroscopic results, obtained with UKIRT/CGS4, of a sample of 14 candidate ultracool dwarfs selected from the DENIS (Deep Near-Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky) database. A further object, selected from the 2MASS Second Incremental Release, was observed at a later epoch with the same instrument. Six objects are already known in the literature; we re-derive their properties. A further four prove to be very nearby (~10 pc) mid-to-late L-dwarfs, three unknown hitherto, two of which are almost certainly substellar. These findings increase the number of L-dwarfs known within ~10 pc by ~25%. The remainder of the objects discussed here are early L or very late M-type dwarfs lying between ~45 and 15 pc and are also new to the literature. Spectral types have been derived by direct comparison with J-,H- and K- band spectra of known template ultracool dwarfs given by Leggett et al. (ftp://ftp.jach.hawaii.edu/pub/ukirt/skl/dL.spectra/) For the known objects, we generally find agreement to within ~1 subclass with previously derived spectral types. Distances are determined from the most recent M_J vs. spectral type calibrations, and together with our derived proper motions yield kinematics for most targets consistent with that expected for the disk population; for three probable late M-dwarfs, membership of a dynamically older population is postulated. The very nearby L-type objects discussed here are of great interest for future studies of binarity and parallaxes.

We report high resolution (1-2 arcsec) imaging of the CO 2-1 line and the millimeter continuum in the proto-planetary nebula He 3-1475. The observations reveal the presence of a massive (~0.6 M_sun} envelope of molecular gas around the origin of the remarkable bipolar jet system seen in optical images with the HST. The CO kinematics are well modeled by an expanding, bi-conical envelope: the prominent, high-velocity (~50 km/s) wings seen in single-dish CO spectra arise where the sides of the bi-cones are projected along the line of sight. The continuum is detected at 1.3 mm and 2.6 mm and is due to thermal emission from warm (~80 K) circumstellar dust. The structure, kinematics, and expansion time of the envelope provide strong evidence for entrainment of the molecular gas by the high velocity jets. The observations support an evolutionary scenario in which a period of enhanced mass loss by the central star is followed by the development of the bipolar jets which burst through the molecular envelope. The jet-envelope interactions play a crucial role in sha** the subsequent ionized nebula.

Main Sequence (MS) stars are by far the most numerous class in the Universe. They are often somewhat neglected as they are relatively quiet objects (but exceptions exist), though they bear testimony of the past and future of our Sun. An important characteristic of the MS stars, particularly the solar-type ones, is that they host the large majority of the known extrasolar planets. Moreover, at the bottom of the MS, the red M dwarfs pave the way to understanding the physics of brown dwarfs and giant planets. We have measured very precise angular diameters from recent VINCI/VLTI interferometric observations of a number of MS stars in the K band, with spectral types between A1V and M5.5V. They already cover a wide range of effective temperatures and radii. Combined with precise Hipparcos parallaxes, photometry, spectroscopy as well as the asteroseismic information available for some of these stars, the angular diameters put strong constraints on the detailed models of these stars, and therefore on the physical processes at play.

This paper reports updated results on our systematic mining of the DENIS database for nearby very cool M-dwarfs (M6V-M8V, 2.0<I-J<3.0, photometric distance within 30 pc), We calibrate the DENIS (M_I, I-J) colour-luminosity relationship from M dwarfs with well measured parallaxes (HIP, GCTP,...), obtaining distance errors for single dwarfs of 25%. Using proper motions measured on archive Schmidt plates for stars that meet the photometric selection criteria, we eliminate the giants by a Reduced Proper Motion cutoff, which is significantly more selective than a simple proper motion cutoff.
Here we present new data for 62 red dwarf candidates selected over 5700 square degrees in the DENIS database. 26 of those originate in the 2100 square degrees analysed in Paper I, with improved parameters here, and 36 were found in 3600 additional square degrees. 25 of those are new nearby dwarfs. We determine from that sample of 62 stars a stellar density for 12.0<M_I<14.0 of 2.2(+-0.4)E-3 stars/pc^3/mag. This value is consistent with photometric luminosity functions measured from deeper and smaller-field observations, but not with the nearby star luminosity function. In addition we cross-identified the NLTT and DENIS catalogues to find 15 similar stars, in parts of the sky not yet covered by the colour-selected search.

We report the first astrometrically determined mass of an extrasolar planet, a companion previously detected by Doppler spectroscopy. Radial velocities first provided an ephemeris with which to schedule a significant fraction of the {\it HST} observations near companion peri- and apastron. The astrometry residuals at these orbital phases exhibit a systematic deviation consistent with a perturbation due to a planetary mass companion. Combining {\it HST} astrometry with radial velocities, we solve for the proper motion, parallax, perturbation size, inclination, and position angle of the line of nodes, while constraining period, velocity amplitude, longitude of periastron, and eccentricity to values determined from radial velocities. We find a perturbation semi-major axis and inclination, $α$ = 0.25 $\pm$ 0.06 mas, $i$ = 84\arcdeg $\pm$6\arcdeg, and Gl 876 absolute parallax, $π_{abs}= 214.6 \pm$ 0.2 mas. Assuming that the mass of the primary star is $M_* = 0.32M_{\sun}$, we find the mass of the planet, Gl 876b, $M_b = 1.89\pm0.34M_{Jup}$.

We determine an empirical mass-radius relation for M dwarfs based on all available radius measurements. The observed relation agrees well with theoretical models at the present accuracy level, with possible discrepancy around 0.5-0.8 Msolar that needs to be confirmed. In the near future, dozens of M dwarfs radii will be measured with 0.1-1% accuracy, with the VLTI, thanks to the improvements expected from the near infrared instrument AMBER. This will bring strong observational constraints on both atmosphere and interior physics.

We report high resolution imaging of a prominent cometary globule in the Helix nebula in the CO J=1-0 (2.6 mm) and H2 v=1-0 S(1) (2.12 micron) lines. The observations confirm that globules consist of dense condensations of molecular gas embedded in the ionized nebula. The head of the globule is seen as a peak in the CO emission with an extremely narrow line width (0.5 km/s) and is outlined by a limb-brightened surface of H2 emission facing the central star and lying within the photo-ionized halo. The emission from both molecular species extends into the tail region. The presence of this extended molecular emission provides new constraints on the structure of the tails, and on the origin and evolution of the globules.

We identify 21 new components in solar neighbourhood systems, of which 13 were found while surveying a volume-limited sample of M dwarfs within 12pc. We are obtaining complete observations for this subsample, to derive unbiased multiplicity statistics for the very-low-mass disk population. Additionally, we resolve for the first time 6 known spectroscopic or astrometric binaries, for a total of 27 newly resolved companions. A fair fraction of the new binaries has favourable parameters for accurate mass determinations. The newly resolved companion of Gl120.1C had an apparent spectroscopic minimum mass in the brown-dwarf range (Duquennoy & Mayor 1991) and it contributed to the statistical evidence that a few percent of solar type stars might have close-in brown-dwarf companions. We find that Gl~120.1C actually is an unrecognised double-lined spectroscopic pair. Its radial-velocity amplitude had therefore been strongly underestimated by Duquennoy & Mayor, and it does not truly belong to their sample of single-lined systems with minimum spectroscopic mass below the substellar limit. We also present the first direct detection of Gl~494B, an astrometric brown-dwarf candidate. Its luminosity does straddle the substellar limit, and it is a brown dwarf if its age is less than 300Myr. A few more years of observations will ascertain its mass and status from first principles.

We present the discovery of a previously unknown member of the immediate solar neighbourhood, DENIS-P J104814.7-395606.1 (hereafter DENIS 1048-39), identified while mining the DENIS database for new nearby stars. A HIRES echelle spectrum obtained with the 10-m Keck telescope shows that it is an M9 dwarf. DENIS 1048-39 has a very bright apparent magnitude (I=12.67) for its spectral type and colour (I-J=3.07), and is therefore very nearby. If it is single its distance is only 4.1 +- 0.6pc, ranking it as between our twelfth and fortyth closest neighbour. It is also the closest star or brown dwarf with a spectral type later than M7V. Its proper motion was determined through comparison of Sky atlas Schmidt plates, scanned by the MAMA microdensitometer, with the DENIS images. At 1.53"/yr it further attests the closeness of DENIS 1048-39, and hence its dwarf status. These characteristics make it an obvious target for further detailed studies.

As predicted by stellar structure models, the metallicity dispersion of the field populations induces a large scatter around the mean V band relation, while the infrared relations are much tighter. The agreement of the observed infrared mass-luminosity relations with the theoretical relations of Baraffe et al. (1998) and Siess et al. (2000) is impressive, while we find an increasingly significant discrepancy in the V band for decreasing masses. The theoretical mass-luminosity relation which is insufficiently steep, and has introduced some errors in the local stellar mass functions derived from V band luminosity functions.

We have compiled the near infrared Point Source Catalogue (PSC) towards the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) extracted from the data obtained with the Deep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky - DENIS (Epchtein et al. 1997). The catalogue covers an area of of 19.87* 16 square degrees centered on (RA, DEC)=(5h27m20s, -69o00'00'') for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 14.7* 10 square degrees centered on (RA, DEC)=(h02m40s, -73o00'00'' for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) at the epoch J2000. It contains about 1300000 sources towards the LMC and 300000 sources towards the SMC each detected in at least 2 of the 3 photometric bands involved in the survey (I, J, Ks). 70% of the detected sources are true members of the Magellanic Clouds, respectively and consist mainly of red giants, asymptotic giant branch stars and super-giants. The observations have all been made with the same instrument and the data have been calibrated and reduced uniformly. The catalogue provides a homogeneous set of photometric data.

We present Keck HIRES spectra of 6 late-M dwarfs and 11 L dwarfs. Our goal is to assign effective temperatures to the objects using detailed atmospheric models and fine analysis of the alkali resonance absorption lines of CsI and RbI. These yield mutually consistent results (+-150 K) when we use ``cleared-dust'' models, which account for the removal of refractory species from the molecular states but do not include dust opacities. We find a tendency for the RbI line to imply a slightly higher temperature, which we ascribe to an incomplete treatment of the overlying molecular opacities. The final effective temperatures we adopt are based on the CsI fits alone, though the RbI fits support the CsI temperature sequence. This work, in combination with results from the infrared, hints that dust in these atmospheres has settled out of the high atmosphere but is present in the deep photosphere. We also derive radial and rotational velocities for all the objects, finding that the previously discovered trend of rapid rotation for very low mass objects is quite pervasive. To improve on our analysis, there is a clear need for better molecular line lists and a more detailed understanding of dust formation and dynamics.

Most of the T Tauri stars in our study show evidence of absorption by H2O vapor in their atmospheres; in addition, the low-mass brown dwarf candidate, TWA 5B, is brighter at 1.9 microns than predicted by cool star models that include the effects of H2O vapor but neglect dust. We conclude that the effect of atmospheric dust on the opacity is important at 1.9 microns for TWA 5B, the coolest object in our sample. The available evidence suggests that the TWA is 5-15 MY old. Comparison of the colors of TWA 5B with theoretical magnitudes as a function of age and mass then confirms previous claims that TWA 5B is substellar with a mass in the range 0.02-0.03 solar masses. The accurate single-epoch astrometry of the relative positions and separation of TWA 5A and TWA 5B reported here should permit the direct measurement of the orbital motion of TWA 5B within only a few years.

We present very accurate individual masses (1.2% relative accuracy) for the two components of Gl 570BC, an interferometric and double-lined spectroscopic binary system. They were obtained from new high accuracy radial velocity and angular separation measurements, analysed together with previously published measurements. From those data we determine a much improved orbit through a simultaneous least square fit to the radial velocity, visual, and parallax information. The derived masses and absolute magnitudes generally validate the theoretical and empirical mass-luminosity relations around 0.5 Msol, but point towards some low level discrepancies at the 0.1 to 0.15 magnitude level. Forthcoming results of this observing program will extend the comparison to much lower masses with similar accuracy.

We report the discovery of two L dwarfs (the new spectral class defined for dwarfs cooler than the M type) in a two-epoch CCD proper motion survey of 413 square degrees, complemented by infrared photometry from DENIS. One of them has a strong lithium line and is therefore a brown dwarf. The other is a common proper motion companion to the mid-M dwarf LHS 102 (GJ 1001), which has a well determined trigonometric parallax. LHS 102B is thus the coolest L dwarf of known distance and luminosity. Its infrared absolute photometry are very well reproduced by the Allard et al DUSTY models.

We present preliminary results of a radial-velocity search for companions to a volume limited sample of M dwarfs. Typical accuracy range between 10m/s for the brighter stars and 70m/s at our limiting magnitude. We complement the radial velocity monitoring with adaptive optics imaging to identify close visual companions in a larger volume-limited sample. For stellar companions the two techniques together cover the full separation range, to beyond the limiting distance of the sample. We will therefore eventually obtain a statistically meaningful inventory of the stellar multiplicity of nearby M-dwarf systems. We also have useful sensitivity to giant planets, as illustrated by our recent detection of a planetary companion to Gl 876.
After 2.5 years, we have discovered 12 previously unknown components in this 127 stars sample. 7 of these are actually beyond our 9 pc limit, and were included on the basis of photometric parallaxes which were biased-down by the unrecognized companion. The remaining 5 are true additions to the 9 pc inventory. More are certainly forthcoming, given our present selection bias towards short periods and relatively massive companions. We have derived orbital elements for 7 of the new systems, and for some previously known binaries. One system is a Post-Common-Envelope WD+M binary. Some of the new binaries have excellent prospects for an accurate mass determination over the next few years. Preliminary masses have accuracies of 2% at 0.4-0.6 \Msol and 10% at 0.1 \Msol.

We are able to confirm that the spectral types derived from the Mini-survey infrared spectroscopy are meaningful. We provide a spectral sequence which extends beyond the M-dwarf range and into the proposed ``L'' class of dwarfs. The dominant spectral features in the optical for these L-type dwarfs are resonance lines of Cs I and molecular band heads of CrH and FeH. The other dominant feature in these L-type spectra is a broad 600A absorption dip centered on 7700A, which we identify with extremely strong (equivalent width $\sim$ several hundred A) absorption associated with the 7664,7698A resonance doublet of K I. We find that model atmospheres which include the effects of molecular condensation without dust opacity (to simulate rapid gravitational settling of dust grains) produce significantly better agreement with observed optical spectra for L-type dwarfs, than models including dust opacity. This suggests gravitational settling of dust grains plays an important role in L-dwarf photospheres. The extreme strength of the K I resonance doublet, and disappearance of TiO and VO, and the consequent dominance of CrH and FeH in L-dwarf spectra offer considerable prospects as sensitive effective temperature diagnostics, even at low spectral resolution.

At the same position, we obtained high-quality CO(2-1) and 13CO(2-1) spectra and a 135" x 135" map in CO(2-1). The velocity distribution of CI shows six narrow (1 -> 2 km/sec) components which are associated with individual globules traced in CO. The CI column densities are 0.5 -> 1.2 x 10^16/cm^2. CI is found to be a factor of ~6 more abundant than CO. Our estimate for the mass of the neutral envelope is an order of magnitude larger than previous estimates. The large abundance of CI in the Helix can be understood as a result of the gradual photoionisation of the molecular envelope by the central star's radiation field.
