Perceptual decision-making frequently requires making rapid, reliable choices upon encountering noisy sensory inputs. To better define the statistical processes underlying perceptual decision-making, here we characterize the choices of human participants visualizing a system of nonequilibrium stationary physical dynamics and compare such choices to the performance of an optimal agent computing Wald's sequential probability ratio test (SPRT). Participants viewed movies of a particle endowed with drifted Brownian dynamics and had to judge the motion as leftward or rightward. Overall, the results uncovered fundamental performance limits, consistent with recently established thermodynamic trade-offs involving speed, accuracy, and dissipation. Specifically, decision times are sensitive to entropy production rates. Moreover, to achieve a given level of observed accuracy, participants require more time than predicted by SPRT, indicating suboptimal integration of available information. In view of such suboptimality, we develop an alternative account based on evidence integration with a memory time constant. Setting the time constant proportionately to the deviation from equilibrium in the stimuli significantly improved trial-by-trial predictions of decision metrics with respect to SPRT. This study shows that perceptual psychophysics using stimuli rooted in nonequilibrium physical processes provides a robust platform for understanding how the brain takes decisions on stochastic information inputs.

Robust inference of causality in high-dimensional dynamical processes from the Information Imbalance of distance ranks

We introduce an approach which allows detecting causal relationships between variables for which the time evolution is available. Causality is assessed by a variational scheme based on the Information Imbalance of distance ranks, a statistical test capable of inferring the relative information content of different distance measures. We test whether the predictability of a putative driven system Y can be improved by incorporating information from a potential driver system X, without explicitly modeling the underlying dynamics and without the need to compute probability densities of the dynamic variables. This framework makes causality detection possible even between high-dimensional systems where only few of the variables are known or measured. Benchmark tests on coupled chaotic dynamical systems demonstrate that our approach outperforms other model-free causality detection methods, successfully handling both unidirectional and bidirectional couplings. We also show that the method can be used to robustly detect causality in human electroencephalography data.

Wearing comfort of apparel is highly dependent on moisture management and respective transport properties of the textiles. In today's used textiles, the water vapor transmission (WVT) depends primarily on the porosity and the wettability of the clothing layer next to the skin and is not adapting or responsive on environmental conditions. The WVT is inevitably the same from both sides of the membrane. In this study, we propose a novel approach by development of a thermoresponsive Janus membrane using electrospinning procedures. We, therefore, targeted a membrane as a bilayer composite structure by use of PVDF as one layer and a blend of PVDF and PNIPAM as the second layer changing wettability properties in the range of physiological temperatures. Tailored electrospinning conditions led to a self-standing membrane incorporating fiber diameters of 400nm, porosities of 50% for both layers within the Janus membrane. The WVT studies revealed that the combined effects of the Janus membrane's directional wettability and the temperature-responsive property results in temperature-dependent vapor transport. The results show that the membrane offers minimum resistance to WVT when the PVDF side faces the skin, which depicts the side with high humidity, over a range of temperatures. However, the same membrane shows a temperature-dependent WVT behavior when the blend side faces the skin. From room temperature of 25 C to an elevated temperature of 35 C, there is a significant increase in the membrane's resistance to WVT. This behavior is attributed to the combined effect of the Janus construct and the thermoresponsive property. This temperature-controlled differential vapor transport offers ways to adapt vapor transport independence of environmental conditions leading to an enhanced wearing comfort and performance to be applied in fields such as apparel or the packaging industry.

In rubber friction studies it is often observed that the kinetic friction coefficient μ depends on the nominal contact pressure p. We discuss several possible origins of the pressure dependency of μ: (a) saturation of the contact area (and friction force) due to high nominal squeezing pressure, (b) non-linear viscoelasticity, (c) non-randomness in the surface topography, in particular the influence of the skewness of the surface roughness profile, (d) adhesion, and (e) frictional heating. We show that in most cases the non-linearity in the μ(p) relation is mainly due to process (e) (frictional heating), which softens the rubber, increases the area of contact, and (in most cases) reduces the viscoelastic contribution to the friction. In fact, since the temperature distribution in the rubber at time t depends on on the sliding history (i.e., on the earlier time t0 < t), the friction coefficient at time t will also depend on the sliding history, i.e. it is, strictly speaking, a time integral operator. The energy dissipation in the contact regions between solids in sliding contact can result in high local temperatures which may strongly affect the area of real contact and the friction force (and the wear-rate). This is the case for rubber sliding on road surfaces at speeds above 1 mm/s. In Ref. [14] we have derived equations which describe the frictional heating for solids with arbitrary thermal properties. In this paper the theory is applied to rubber friction on road surfaces. Numerical results are presented and compared to experimental data. We observe good agreement between the calculated and measured temperature increase.

Close inspection of the pre-edge in oxygen near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectra of single step, gas phase synthesized titanium oxynitride photocatalysts with 20 nm particle size reveals an additional eg resonance in the VB that went unnoticed in previous TiO2 anion do** studies. The relative spectral weight of this Ti(3d)-O(2p) hybridized state with respect to and located between the readily established t2g and eg resonances scales qualitatively with the photocatalytic decomposition power, suggesting that this extra resonance bears co-responsibility for the photocatalytic performance of titanium oxynitrides at visible light wavelengths.
