We construct a new type of holographic correspondence between non-relativistic string theory in String Newton-Cartan AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ and Galilean Electrodynamics supplemented with 5 uncharged massless free scalar fields living on the 3+1 dimensional Penrose conformal boundary. In our derivation, we start with Maldacena's setting of a stack of $N$ coincident D3-branes and we show that the near-horizon/decoupling limit commutes with the non-relativistic limit, giving a unique answer both from the gravity and gauge theory perspectives. As a first evidence, we systematically compute the Killing vectors on the string theory side, and find that they match the on-shell symmetries of the dual gauge theory.

Using carefully chosen projections, we consider different Carroll limits of relativistic Dirac fermions in any spacetime dimensions. These limits define Carroll fermions of two types: electric and magnetic. The latter type transforms as a reducible but indecomposable representation of the Carroll group. We also build action principles for all Carroll fermions we introduce; in particular, in even dimensions we provide an action principle for a minimal magnetic Carroll fermion, having the same number of components as a Dirac spinor. We then explore the coupling of these fermions to magnetic Carroll gravity in both its first-order and second-order formulations.

Computed Tomography (CT) is commonly used to image acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients, but its interpretation by radiologists is time-consuming and subject to inter-observer variability. Deep learning (DL) techniques can provide automated CT brain scan assessment, but usually require annotated images. Aiming to develop a DL method for AIS using labelled but not annotated CT brain scans from patients with AIS, we designed a convolutional neural network-based DL algorithm using routinely-collected CT brain scans from the Third International Stroke Trial (IST-3), which were not acquired using strict research protocols. The DL model aimed to detect AIS lesions and classify the side of the brain affected. We explored the impact of AIS lesion features, background brain appearances, and timing on DL performance. From 5772 unique CT scans of 2347 AIS patients (median age 82), 54% had visible AIS lesions according to expert labelling. Our best-performing DL method achieved 72% accuracy for lesion presence and side. Lesions that were larger (80% accuracy) or multiple (87% accuracy for two lesions, 100% for three or more), were better detected. Follow-up scans had 76% accuracy, while baseline scans 67% accuracy. Chronic brain conditions reduced accuracy, particularly non-stroke lesions and old stroke lesions (32% and 31% error rates respectively). DL methods can be designed for AIS lesion detection on CT using the vast quantities of routinely-collected CT brain scan data. Ultimately, this should lead to more robust and widely-applicable methods.

Despite the large amount of brain CT data generated in clinical practice, the availability of CT datasets for deep learning (DL) research is currently limited. Furthermore, the data can be insufficiently or improperly prepared for machine learning and thus lead to spurious and irreproducible analyses. This lack of access to comprehensive and diverse datasets poses a significant challenge for the development of DL algorithms. In this work, we propose a complete semi-automatic pipeline to address the challenges of preparing a clinical brain CT dataset for DL analysis and describe the process of standardising this heterogeneous dataset. Challenges include handling image sets with different orientations (axial, sagittal, coronal), different image types (to view soft tissues or bones) and dimensions, and removing redundant background. The final pipeline was able to process 5,868/10,659 (45%) CT image datasets. Reasons for rejection include non-axial data (n=1,920), bone reformats (n=687), separated skull base/vault images (n=1,226), and registration failures (n=465). Further format adjustments, including image crop**, resizing and scaling are also needed for DL processing. Of the axial scans that were not localisers, bone reformats or split brains, 5,868/6,333 (93%) were accepted, while the remaining 465 failed the registration process. Appropriate preparation of medical imaging datasets for DL is a costly and time-intensive process.

Segmentation masks of pathological areas are useful in many medical applications, such as brain tumour and stroke management. Moreover, healthy counterfactuals of diseased images can be used to enhance radiologists' training files and to improve the interpretability of segmentation models. In this work, we present a weakly supervised method to generate a healthy version of a diseased image and then use it to obtain a pixel-wise anomaly map. To do so, we start by considering a saliency map that approximately covers the pathological areas, obtained with ACAT. Then, we propose a technique that allows to perform targeted modifications to these regions, while preserving the rest of the image. In particular, we employ a diffusion model trained on healthy samples and combine Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Model (DDPM) and Denoising Diffusion Implicit Model (DDIM) at each step of the sampling process. DDPM is used to modify the areas affected by a lesion within the saliency map, while DDIM guarantees reconstruction of the normal anatomy outside of it. The two parts are also fused at each timestep, to guarantee the generation of a sample with a coherent appearance and a seamless transition between edited and unedited parts. We verify that when our method is applied to healthy samples, the input images are reconstructed without significant modifications. We compare our approach with alternative weakly supervised methods on IST-3 for stroke lesion segmentation and on BraTS2021 for brain tumour segmentation, where we improve the DICE score of the best competing method from $0.6534$ to $0.7056$.

Then, we consider the simplest non-relativistic vacuum, found in arXiv:2109.13240 (called BMN-like), and we identify its relativistic origin, namely a non-compact version of the folded string with zero spin, ignored in the past due to its infinite energy. We show that, once the critical closed B-field required by the non-relativistic limit is included, the total energy of such relativistic solution is finite, and in the large $c$ parameter it precisely matches the one of the BMN-like string. We also analyse the case with spin in the transverse AdS directions.

In some medical imaging tasks and other settings where only small parts of the image are informative for the classification task, traditional CNNs can sometimes struggle to generalise. Manually annotated Regions of Interest (ROI) are sometimes used to isolate the most informative parts of the image. However, these are expensive to collect and may vary significantly across annotators. To overcome these issues, we propose a framework that employs saliency maps to obtain soft spatial attention masks that modulate the image features at different scales. We refer to our method as Adversarial Counterfactual Attention (ACAT). ACAT increases the baseline classification accuracy of lesions in brain CT scans from 71.39% to 72.55% and of COVID-19 related findings in lung CT scans from 67.71% to 70.84% and exceeds the performance of competing methods. We investigate the best way to generate the saliency maps employed in our architecture and propose a way to obtain them from adversarially generated counterfactual images. They are able to isolate the area of interest in brain and lung CT scans without using any manual annotations. In the task of localising the lesion location out of 6 possible regions, they obtain a score of 65.05% on brain CT scans, improving the score of 61.29% obtained with the best competing method.

In this paper we initiate the study of the spectral curve for non-relativistic strings in AdS$_5\times S^5$. First we show that for string solutions whose Lax connection is independent of $σ$, the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix do not have any spectral parameter dependence. We remark that this particular behaviour also appears for relativistic strings in flat space. Second, for some simple non-relativistic string solutions where the path ordered exponential of the Lax connection can be computed, we show that the monodromy matrix is either diagonalisable with quasi-momenta independent of the spectral parameter, or non-diagonalisable. For the latter case, we propose a notion of generalised quasi-momenta, based on maximal abelian subalgebras, which retain a dependence on the spectral parameter.

When Gaussian null coordinates are adapted to a Killing horizon, the near-horizon limit is defined by a coordinate rescaling and then by taking the regulator parameter $\varepsilon$ to be small, as a way of zooming into the horizon hypersurface. In this coordinate setting, it is known that the metric of a non-extremal Killing horizon in the near-horizon limit is divergent, and it has been a common practice to impose extremality in order to set the divergent term to zero. Although the metric is divergent, we show for a class of Killing horizons that the vacuum Einstein's equations can be separated into a divergent and a finite part, leading to a well-defined minimal set of Einstein's equations one needs to solve. We extend the result to Einstein gravity minimally coupled to a massless scalar field. We also discuss the case of Einstein gravity coupled to a Maxwell field, in which case the separability holds if the Maxwell potential has non-vanishing components only in the directions of the horizon spatial cross section.

In particular, mooring line faults may lead to unacceptably high operation and maintenance costs due to the limited accessibility of FOWTs. Detecting the mooring line faults is therefore critical, but the application of Fault Detection (FD) techniques has not been investigated yet. In this paper, an FD scheme based on a wave-excited linear model is developed to detect in a reliable way critical mooring line faults occurring at the fairlead and anchor ends. To reach the goal, a linear model of the FOWT is obtained by approximating the wave radiation and incident wave forces. Based on this model, an observer is built to predict the rigid rotor and platform dynamics. The FD scheme is thus implemented by comparing the Mahalanobis Distance of the observer prediction error against a probabilistic detection threshold. Numerical simulations in some selected fault scenarios show that the wave-excited linear model can predict the FOWT dynamics with good accuracy. Based on this, the FD scheme capabilities are demonstrated, showing that it is able to effectively detect two critical mooring line faults.

Floating offshore wind turbines allow wind energy to be harvested in deep waters. However, additional dynamics and structural loads may result when the floating platform is being excited by wind and waves. In this work, the conventional wind turbine controller is complemented with a novel linear feedforward controller based on wave measurements. The objective of the feedforward controller is to attenuate rotor speed variations caused by wave forcing. To design this controller, a linear model is developed that describes the system response to incident waves. The performance of the feedback-feedforward controller is assessed by a high-fidelity numerical tool using the DTU 10MW turbine and the INNWIND.EU TripleSpar platform as references. Simulations in the presence of irregular waves and turbulent wind show that the feedforward controller effectively compensates the wave-induced rotor oscillations. The novel controller is able to reduce the rotor speed variance by 26%. As a result, the remaining rotor speed variance is only 4% higher compared to operation in still water.

We consider the effective action of the Heterotic Superstring to first order in alpha prime and derive the necessary and sufficient conditions that a field configuration has to satisfy in order to admit at least one Killing spinor using the spinor bilinear method and making minimal coordinate and frame choices. As a previous step in this derivation, we compute the complete spinor bilinear algebra using the Fierz identities, obtaining as a by-product the algebra satisfied by the Spin(7) structure contained in the bilinears in an arbitrary basis. We find the relations existing between the left-hand-sides of the bosonic equations of motion evaluated on supersymmetric field configurations using the Killing Spinor Identities instead of the (far more complicated) integrability conditions of the Killing Spinor Equations as it is common in the literature. We show how to include the Kalb-Ramond's Bianchi identity in the Killing Spinor Identities.

We consider the action of the $q$-deformed Poincaré superalgebra on the massless non-relativistic R-matrix in ordinary (undeformed) integrable $AdS_2 \times S^2 \times T^6$ type IIB superstring theory. The boost generator acts non-trivially on the R-matrix, confirming the existence of a non-relativistic rapidity $γ$ with respect to which the R-matrix must be of difference form. We conjecture that from a massless AdS/CFT integrable relativistic R-matrix one can obtain the parental massless non-relativistic R-matrix simply by replacing the relativistic rapidity with $γ$. We check our conjecture in ordinary (undeformed) $AdS_n \times S^n \times T^{10 - 2n}$, $n = 2, 3$. In the case $n=3$, we check that the matrix part and the dressing factor - up to numerical accuracy for real momenta - obey our prescription. In the $n=2$ case, we check the matrix part and propose the non-relativistic dressing factor. We then start a programme of classifying R-matrices in terms of connections on fibre bundles. The conditions obtained for the connection are tested on a set of known integrable R-matrices.

This thesis is devoted to the study of geometric aspects of black holes and integrable structures in string theory. In the first part, symmetries of the horizon and its bulk extension will be investigated. We investigate the horizon conjecture beyond the supergravity approximation, by considering α' corrections of heterotic supergravity in perturbation theory, and show that standard global techniques can no longer be applied. A sufficient condition to establish the horizon conjecture will be identified. As a consequence of our analysis, we find a no-go theorem for AdS2 backgrounds in heterotic theory. The bulk extension of a prescribed near-horizon geometry will then be considered in various theories. The horizon fields will be expanded at first order in the radial coordinate. The moduli space of radial deformations will be proved to be finite dimensional, by showing that the moduli must satisfy elliptic PDEs.
In the second part, geometric aspects and spectral properties of integrable anti-de Sitter backgrounds will be discussed. We formulate a Bethe ansatz in AdS2 x S2 x T6 type IIB superstring, overcoming the problem of the lack of pseudo-vacuum state affecting this background. In AdS3 x S3 x T4 type IIB superstring, we show that the S-matrix is annihilated by the boost generator of the q-deformed Poincaré superalgebra, and interpret this condition as a parallel equation for the S-matrix with respect to a connection on a fibre bundle. This hints that the algebraic problem associated with the scattering process can be geometrically rewritten. This allows us to propose a Universal S-matrix.

We first analyse the integrable scattering theory describing the massless excitations of $AdS_2 \times S^2 \times T^6$ superstrings in the relativistic limit. The matrix part of the S-matrix is obtained in the BMN limit from the conjectured exact expression, and compared with known S-matrices with N=1 supersymmetry. A dressing factor, yet unknown for the complete theory, is here constructed based on relativistic crossing symmetry. We derive a Bethe-ansatz condition by employing a transfer-matrix technique based on the so-called free-fermion condition. This is known to overcome the problem of lack of a reference state. We then generalise the method to the massless non-relativistic case, and compare the resulting Bethe-ansatz condition with a simple massless limit of the one conjectured by Sorokin, Tseytlin, Wulff and Zarembo.

Abstract:
We investigate deformations of extremal near-horizon geometries in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory, including various topological terms, and also in D=11 supergravity. By linearizing the field equations and Bianchi identities over the compact spatial cross-sections of the near-horizon geometry, we prove that the moduli associated with such deformations are constrained by elliptic systems of PDEs.…

We investigate deformations of extremal near-horizon geometries in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory, including various topological terms, and also in D=11 supergravity. By linearizing the field equations and Bianchi identities over the compact spatial cross-sections of the near-horizon geometry, we prove that the moduli associated with such deformations are constrained by elliptic systems of PDEs. The moduli space of deformations of near-horizon geometries in these theories is therefore shown to be finite dimensional.

Abstract:
We study the recently discovered q-deformed Poincare' supersymmetry of the AdS_3/CFT_2 integrable massless scattering, and demonstrate how the S-matrix is invariant under boosts. The boost generator has a non-local coproduct, which acts on the scattering matrix as a differential operator, annihilating it. We propose to reinterpret the boost action in terms of covariant derivatives on bundles, and…

We propose to reinterpret the boost action in terms of covariant derivatives on bundles, and derive an expression for the S-matrix as the path-ordered exponential of a flat connection. We provide a list of possible alternative interpretations of this emergent geometric picture, including a one-dimensional auxiliary Schroedinger problem. We support our claims by performing a simplified algebraic Bethe ansatz, which bears some resemblance to antiferromagnets.

We consider supersymmetric near-horizon geometries in heterotic supergravity up to two loop order in sigma model perturbation theory. We identify the conditions for the horizons to admit enhancement of supersymmetry. We show that solutions which undergo supersymmetry enhancement exhibit an sl(2,R) symmetry, and we describe the geometry of their horizon sections. We also prove a modified Lichnerowicz type theorem, incorporating $α'$ corrections, which relates Killing spinors to zero modes of near-horizon Dirac operators. Furthermore, we demonstrate that there are no AdS2 solutions in heterotic supergravity up to second order in $α'$ for which the fields are smooth and the internal space is smooth and compact without boundary. We investigate a class of nearly supersymmetric horizons, for which the gravitino Killing spinor equation is satisfied on the spatial cross sections but not the dilatino one, and present a description of their geometry.
