As more distributed energy resources become part of the demand-side infrastructure, it is important to quantify the energy flexibility they provide on a community scale, particularly to understand the impact of geographic, climatic, and occupant behavioral differences on their effectiveness, as well as identify the best control strategies to accelerate their real-world adoption. CityLearn provides an environment for benchmarking simple and advanced distributed energy resource control algorithms including rule-based, model-predictive, and reinforcement learning control. CityLearn v2 presented here extends CityLearn v1 by providing a simulation environment that leverages the End-Use Load Profiles for the U.S. Building Stock dataset to create virtual grid-interactive communities for resilient, multi-agent distributed energy resources and objective control with dynamic occupant feedback. This work details the v2 environment design and provides application examples that utilize reinforcement learning to manage battery energy storage system charging/discharging cycles, vehicle-to-grid control, and thermal comfort during heat pump power modulation.

Intelligent energy management strategies, such as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V) emerge as a potential solution to the Electric Vehicles' (EVs) integration into the energy grid. These strategies promise enhanced grid resilience and economic benefits for both vehicle owners and grid operators. Despite the announced prospective, the adoption of these strategies is still hindered by an array of operational problems. Key among these is the lack of a simulation platform that allows to validate and refine V2G and G2V strategies. Including the development, training, and testing in the context of Energy Communities (ECs) incorporating multiple flexible energy assets. Addressing this gap, first we introduce the EVLearn, a simulation module for researching in both V2G and G2V energy management strategies, that models EVs, their charging infrastructure and associated energy flexibility dynamics; second, this paper integrates EVLearn with the existing CityLearn framework, providing V2G and G2V simulation capabilities into the study of broader energy management strategies. Results validated EVLearn and its integration into CityLearn, where the impact of these strategies is highlighted through a comparative simulation scenario.

This paper investigates the increasing roles of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Electric Vehicles (EVs). While indicating a new era of sustainable energy, these also introduce complex challenges, including the need to balance supply and demand and smooth peak consumptions amidst rising EV adoption rates. Addressing these challenges requires innovative solutions such as Demand Response (DR), energy flexibility management, Renewable Energy Communities (RECs), and more specifically for EVs, Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G). However, existing V2G approaches often fall short in real-world adaptability, global REC optimization with other flexible assets, scalability, and user engagement. To bridge this gap, this paper introduces EnergAIze, a Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) energy management framework, leveraging the Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) algorithm. EnergAIze enables user-centric and multi-objective energy management by allowing each prosumer to select from a range of personal management objectives, thus encouraging engagement. Additionally, it architects' data protection and ownership through decentralized computing, where each prosumer can situate an energy management optimization node directly at their own dwelling. The local node not only manages local energy assets but also fosters REC wide optimization. The efficacy of EnergAIze was evaluated through case studies employing the CityLearn simulation framework. These simulations were instrumental in demonstrating EnergAIze's adeptness at implementing V2G technology within a REC and other energy assets. The results show reduction in peak loads, ram**, carbon emissions, and electricity costs at the REC level while optimizing for individual prosumers objectives.

The emergence of smart cities demands harnessing advanced technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) and promises to unlock cities' potential to become more sustainable, efficient, and ultimately livable for their inhabitants. This work introduces an intelligent city management system that provides a data-driven approach to three use cases: (i) analyze traffic information to reduce the risk of traffic collisions and improve driver and pedestrian safety, (ii) identify when and where energy consumption can be reduced to improve cost savings, and (iii) detect maintenance issues like potholes in the city's roads and sidewalks, as well as the beginning of hazards like floods and fires. A case study in Aveiro City demonstrates the system's effectiveness in generating actionable insights that enhance security, energy efficiency, and sustainability, while highlighting the potential of AI and IoT-driven solutions for smart city development.

Every novel technology adds hidden vulnerabilities ready to be exploited by a growing number of cyber-attacks. Automated software testing can be a promising solution to quickly analyze thousands of lines of code by generating and slightly modifying function-specific testing data to encounter a multitude of vulnerabilities and attack vectors. This process draws similarities to the constrained adversarial examples generated by adversarial learning methods, so there could be significant benefits to the integration of these methods in automated testing tools. Therefore, this systematic review is focused on the current state-of-the-art of constrained data generation methods applied for adversarial learning and software testing, aiming to guide researchers and developers to enhance testing tools with adversarial learning methods and improve the resilience and robustness of their digital systems. The found constrained data generation applications for adversarial machine learning were systematized, and the advantages and limitations of approaches specific for software testing were thoroughly analyzed, identifying research gaps and opportunities to improve testing tools with adversarial attack methods.

Using the formalism of bar complexes and their relative versions, we give a new, purely algebraic, construction of the so-called universal elliptic KZB connection in arbitrary level. We compute explicit analytic formulae, and we compare our results with previous approaches to elliptic KZB equations and multiple elliptic polylogarithms in the literature.
Our approach is based on a number of results concerning logarithmic differential forms on universal vector extensions of elliptic curves. Let $S$ be a scheme of characteristic zero, $E \to S$ be an elliptic curve, $f:E^{\natural} \to S$ be its universal vector extension, and $π:E^{\natural} \to E$ be the natural projection. Given a finite subset of torsion sections $Z\subset E(S)$, we study the dg-algebra over $\mathcal{O}_S$ of relative logarithmic differentials $\mathcal{A} = f_*Ω^{\bullet}_{E^{\natural}/S}(\log π^{-1}Z)$. In particular, we prove that the residue exact sequence in degree one splits canonically, and we derive the formality of $\mathcal{A}$. When $S$ is smooth over a field $k$ of characteristic zero, we also prove that sections of $\mathcal{A}^1$ admit canonical lifts to absolute logarithmic differentials in $f_*Ω^1_{E^{\natural}/k}(\log π^{-1}Z)$, which extends a well known property for regular differentials given by the `crystalline nature' of universal vector extensions.

Big data is generating increasing interest in a wide range of industries. Once data is analyzed through compute-intensive Machine Learning (ML) methods, it can derive critical business value for organizations. Powerfulplatforms are essential to handle and process such massive collections of information cost-effectively and conveniently. This work introduces a distributed and scalable platform architecture that can be deployed for efficient real-world big data collection and analytics. The proposed system was tested with a case study for Predictive Maintenance of Home Appliances, where current and vibration sensors with high acquisition frequency were connected to washing machines and refrigerators. Modern organizations face numerous physical security threats, from fire hazards to more intricate concerns regarding surveillance and unauthorized personnel. Conventional standalone fire and intrusion detection solutions must be installed and maintained independently, which leads to high capital and operational costs. Nonetheless, due to recent developments in smart sensors, computer vision techniques, and wireless communication technologies, these solutions can be integrated in a modular and low-cost manner. This work introduces Integrated Physical Security System (IP2S), a multi-agent system capable of coordinating diverse Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and actuators for an efficient mitigation of multiple physical security events. The proposed system was tested in a live case study that combined fire and intrusion detection in an industrial shop floor environment with four different sectors, two surveillance cameras, and a firefighting robot. The experimental results demonstrate that the integration of several events in a single automated system can be advantageous for the security of smart buildings, reducing false alarms and delays.

This paper focuses on modelling surrender time for policyholders in the context of life insurance. In this setup, a large lapse rate at the first months of a contract is often observed, with a decrease in this rate after some months. The modelling of the time to cancellation must account for this specific behaviour. Another stylised fact is that policies which are not cancelled in the study period are considered censored. To account for both censuring and heterogeneous lapse rates, this work assumes a Bayesian survival model with a mixture of regressions. The inference is based on data augmentation allowing for fast computations even for data sets of over a million clients. Moreover, scalable point estimation based on EM algorithm is also presented. An illustrative example emulates a typical behaviour for life insurance contracts and a simulated study investigates the properties of the proposed model. In particular, the observed censuring in the insurance context might be up to 50% of the data, which is very unusual for survival models in other fields such as epidemiology. This aspect is exploited in our simulated study.

Connectivity plays an ever-increasing role in modern society, with people all around the world having easy access to rapidly disseminated information. However, a more interconnected society enables the spread of intentionally false information. To mitigate the negative impacts of fake news, it is essential to improve detection methodologies. This work introduces Multi-Policy Statement Checker (MPSC), a framework that automates fake news detection by using deep learning techniques to analyze a statement itself and its related news articles, predicting whether it is seemingly credible or suspicious. The proposed framework was evaluated using four merged datasets containing real and fake news. Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM), Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) and Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) models were trained to utilize both lexical and syntactic features, and their performance was evaluated. The obtained results demonstrate that a multi-policy analysis reliably identifies suspicious statements, which can be advantageous for fake news detection.

Spatio-temporal processes in environmental applications are often assumed to follow a Gaussian model, possibly after some transformation. However, heterogeneity in space and time might have a pattern that will not be accommodated by transforming the data. In this scenario, modelling the variance laws is an appealing alternative. This work adds flexibility to the usual Multivariate Dynamic Gaussian model by defining the process as a scale mixture between a Gaussian and log-Gaussian processes. The scale is represented by a process varying smoothly over space and time which is allowed to depend on covariates. State-space equations define the dynamics over time for both mean and variance processes resulting infeasible inference and prediction. Analysis of artificial datasets show that the parameters are identifiable and simpler models are well recovered by the general proposed model. The analyses of two important environmental processes, maximum temperature and maximum ozone, illustrate the effectiveness of our proposal in improving the uncertainty quantification in the prediction of spatio-temporal processes.

This paper presents an integrating decision support system to model food security in the UK. In ever-larger dynamic systems, such as the food system, it is increasingly difficult for decision-makers to effectively account for all the variables within the system that may influence the outcomes of interest under enactments of various candidate policies. Each of the influencing variables is likely, themselves, to be dynamic sub-systems with expert domains supported by sophisticated probabilistic models. Recent increases in food poverty the UK raised the questions about the main drivers to food insecurity, how this may be changing over time and how evidence can be used in evaluating policy for decision support. In this context, an integrating decision support system is proposed for household food security to allow decision-makers to compare several candidate policies which may affect the outcome of food insecurity at household level.

We propose a new method for clustering multivariate time-series data based on Dynamic Linear Models. Whereas usual time-series clustering methods obtain static membership parameters, our proposal allows each time-series to dynamically change their cluster memberships over time. In this context, a mixture model is assumed for the time series and a flexible Dirichlet evolution for mixture weights allows for smooth membership changes over time. Posterior estimates and predictions can be obtained through Gibbs sampling, but a more efficient method for obtaining point estimates is presented, based on Stochastic Expectation-Maximization and Gradient Descent. Finally, two applications illustrate the usefulness of our proposed model to model both univariate and multivariate time-series: World Bank indicators for the renewable energy consumption of EU nations and the famous Gapminder dataset containing life-expectancy and GDP per capita for various countries.

This paper proposes an alternative approach for constructing invariant Jeffreys prior distributions tailored for hierarchical or multilevel models. In particular, our proposal is based on a flexible decomposition of the Fisher information for hierarchical models which overcomes the marginalization step of the likelihood of model parameters. The Fisher information matrix for the hierarchical model is derived from the Hessian of the Kullback-Liebler (KL) divergence for the model in a neighborhood of the parameter value of interest. Properties of the KL divergence are used to prove the proposed decomposition. Our proposal takes advantage of the hierarchy and leads to an alternative way of computing Jeffreys priors for the hyperparameters and an upper bound for the prior information. While the Jeffreys prior gives the minimum information about parameters, the proposed bound gives an upper limit for the information put in any prior distribution. A prior with information above that limit may be considered too informative. From a practical point of view, the proposed prior may be evaluated computationally as part of a MCMC algorithm. This property might be essential for modeling setups with many levels in which analytic marginalization is not feasible. We illustrate the usefulness of our proposal with examples in mixture models, in model selection priors such as lasso and in the Student-t model.

We describe higher dimensional generalizations of Ramanujan's classical differential relations satisfied by the Eisenstein series $E_2$, $E_4$, $E_6$. Such "higher Ramanujan equations" are given geometrically in terms of vector fields living on certain moduli stacks classifying abelian schemes equipped with suitable frames of their first de Rham cohomology. These vector fields are canonically constructed by means of the Gauss-Manin connection and the Kodaira-Spencer isomorphism. Using Mumford's theory of degenerating families of abelian varieties, we construct remarkable solutions of these differential equations generalizing $(E_2,E_4,E_6)$, which are also shown to be defined over $\mathbf{Z}$.
This geometric framework taking account of integrality issues is mainly motivated by questions in Transcendental Number Theory regarding an extension of Nesterenko's celebrated theorem on the algebraic independence of values of Eisenstein series. In this direction, we discuss the precise relation between periods of abelian varieties and the values of the above referred solutions of the higher Ramanujan equations, thereby linking the study of such differential equations to Grothendieck's Period Conjecture. Working in the complex analytic category, we prove "functional" transcendence results, such as the Zariski-density of every leaf of the holomorphic foliation induced by the higher Ramanujan equations.

By inferring the high-frequency content of low-resolution frames based on the similarities between adjacent full-resolution frames, the proposed framework achieves an average 1.18 dB gain over low-pass versions of the point-cloud, for a projection-based distortion metric[1-2].

The problem of validating or criticising models for georeferenced data is challenging, since the conclusions can vary significantly depending on the locations of the validation set. This work proposes the use of cross-validation techniques to assess the goodness of fit of spatial models in different regions of the spatial domain to account for uncertainty in the choice of the validation sets. An obvious problem with the basic cross-validation scheme is that it is based on selecting only a few out of sample locations to validate the model, possibily making the conclusions sensitive to which partition of the data into training and validation cases is utilized. A possible solution to this issue would be to consider all possible configurations of data divided into training and validation observations. From a Bayesian point of view, this could be computationally demanding, as estimation of parameters usually requires Monte Carlo Markov Chain methods. To deal with this problem, we propose the use of estimated discrepancy functions considering all configurations of data partition in a computationally efficient manner based on sampling importance resampling. In particular, we consider uncertainty in the locations by assigning a prior distribution to them. Furthermore, we propose a stratified cross-validation scheme to take into account spatial heterogeneity, reducing the total variance of estimated predictive discrepancy measures considered for model assessment. We illustrate the advantages of our proposal with simulated examples of homogeneous and inhomogeneous spatial processes to investigate the effects of our proposal in scenarios of preferential sampling designs. The methods are illustrated with an application to a rainfall dataset.

We prove a transcendence theorem concerning values of holomorphic maps from a disk to a quasi-projective variety over $\overline{\mathbf{Q}}$ that are integral curves of some algebraic vector field (defined over $\overline{\mathbf{Q}}$). These maps are required to satisfy some integrality property, besides a growth condition and a strong form of Zariski-density that are natural for integral curves of algebraic vector fields. This result generalizes a theorem of Nesterenko concerning algebraic independence of values of the Eisenstein series $E_2,E_4,E_6$. The main technical improvement in our approach is the replacement of a rather restrictive hypothesis of polynomial growth on Taylor coefficients by a geometric notion of moderate growth formulated in terms of Value Distribution Theory.

In this work we present full Bayesian inference for a new flexible nonseparable class of cross-covariance functions for multivariate spatial data. A Bayesian test is proposed for separability of covariance functions which is much more interpretable than parameters related to separability. Spatial models have been increasingly applied in several areas, such as environmental science, climate science and agriculture. These data are usually available in space, time and possibly for several processes. In this context the modeling of dependence is crucial for correct uncertainty quantification and reliable predictions. In particular, for multivariate spatial data we need to specify a valid cross-covariance function, which defines the dependence between the components of a response vector for all locations in the spatial domain. However, cross-covariance functions are not easily specified and the computational burden is a limitation for model complexity. In this work, we propose a nonseparable covariance function that is based on the convex combination of separable covariance functions and on latent dimensions representation of the vector components. The covariance structure proposed is valid and flexible. We simulate four different scenarios for different degrees of separability and compute the posterior probability of separability. It turns out that the posterior probability is much easier to interpret than actual model parameters. We illustrate our methodology with a weather dataset from Ceará, Brazil.

In the first part of this work, we have considered a moduli space $B_g$ classifying principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ endowed with a symplectic-Hodge basis, and we have constructed the higher Ramanujan vector fields $(v_{kl})_{1\le k\le l \le g}$ on it. In this second part, we study these objects from a complex analytic viewpoint. We construct a holomorphic map $\varphi_g : \mathbf{H}_g \to B_g(\mathbf{C})$, where $\mathbf{H}_g$ denotes the Siegel upper half-space of genus $g$, satisfying the system of differential equations $\frac{1}{2πi}\frac{\partial \varphi_g}{\partial τ_{kl}}=v_{kl}\circ \varphi_g$, $1\le k\le l \le g$. When $g=1$, we prove that $\varphi_1$ may be identified with the triple of Eisenstein series $(E_2,E_4,E_6)$, so that the previous differential equations coincide with Ramanujan's classical relations concerning Eisenstein series. We discuss the relation between the values of $\varphi_g$ and the fields of periods of abelian varieties, and we explain how this relates to Grothendieck's periods conjecture. Finally, we prove that every leaf of the holomorphic foliation on $B_g(\mathbf{C})$ induced by the vector fields $v_{kl}$ is Zariski-dense in $B_{g,\mathbf{C}}$. This last result implies a "functional version" of Grothendieck's periods conjecture for abelian varieties.

We describe a higher dimensional generalization of Ramanujan's differential equations satisfied by the Eisenstein series $E_2$, $E_4$, and $E_6$. This will be obtained geometrically as follows. For every integer $g\ge 1$, we construct a moduli stack $\mathcal{B}_g$ over $\mathbf{Z}$ classifying principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ equipped with a suitable additional structure: a symplectic-Hodge basis of its first algebraic de Rham cohomology. We prove that $\mathcal{B}_g$ is a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack over $\mathbf{Z}$ of relative dimension $2g^2 + g$ and that $\mathcal{B}_g\otimes \mathbf{Z}[1/2]$ is representable by a smooth quasi-projective scheme over $\mathbf{Z}[1/2]$. Our main result is a description of the tangent bundle $T_{\mathcal{B}_g/\mathbf{Z}}$ in terms of the cohomology of the universal abelian scheme over the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties $\mathcal{A}_g$. We derive from this description a family of $g(g+1)/2$ commuting vector fields $(v_{ij})_{1\le i \le j \le g}$ on $\mathcal{B}_g$; these are the higher Ramanujan vector fields. In the case $g=1$, we show that $v_{11}$ coincides with the vector field associated to the classical Ramanujan equations.
This geometric framework taking account of integrality issues is mainly motivated by questions in transcendental number theory. In the upcoming second part of this work, we shall relate the values of a particular analytic solution to the differential equations defined by $v_{ij}$ with Grothendieck's periods conjecture on abelian varieties.

We apply them to the classification achieved in arXiv:1306.6303, on three state $U(1)$-invariant Hamiltonians solvable by CBA, focusing on models for which the $S$-matrix is not trivial.
For the 19-vertex solutions, we recover the $R$-matrices of the well-known Zamolodchikov--Fateev and Izergin--Korepin models. We point out that the generalized Bariev Hamiltonian is related to both main and special branches studied by Martins in arXiv:1303.4010, that we prove to generate the same Hamiltonian. The 19-vertex SpR model still resists to the analysis, although we are able to state some no-go theorems on its $R$-matrix.
For 17-vertex Hamiltonians, we produce a new $R$-matrix.

A determinantal formula of Gekhtman and Kasman involving exponentials of finite dimensional matrices is shown to follow naturally from such reductions. All reduced flows of exponential type generated by matrices with arbitrary nondegenerate Jordan forms are derived, both in the Grassmannian setting and within the fermionic operator formalism. A slightly more general determinantal formula involving resolvents of the matrices generating the flow, valid on the big cell of the Grassmannian, is also derived. An explicit expression is deduced for the Plücker coordinates appearing as coefficients in the Schur function expansion of the τ-function.

When considering matchings with p nested arches these quantities are known to be polynomials. In a recent article, Fonseca and Nadeau conjectured some unexpected properties of these polynomials, suggesting that these quantities could be combinatorially interpreted even for negative p. Here, we prove some of these conjectures. Notably, we prove that for negative p we can factor the polynomials into two parts a "positive" one and a "negative" one. Also, a sum rules of the negative part is proven.

We are interested in the enumeration of Fully Packed Loop configurations on a grid with a given noncrossing matching. By the recently proved Razumov--Stroganov conjecture, these quantities also appear as groundstate components in the Completely Packed Loop model. When considering matchings with p nested arches, these numbers are known to be polynomials in p. In this article, we present several conjectures about these polynomials: in particular, we describe all real roots, certain values of these polynomials, and conjecture that the coefficients are positive. The conjectures, which are of a combinatorial nature, are supported by strong numerical evidence and the proofs of several special cases. We also give a version of the conjectures when an extra parameter tau is added to the equations defining the groundstate of the Completely Packed Loop model.

The processes of coherent bremsstrahlung (CB) and coherent pair production (CPP) based on aligned crystal targets have been studied in the energy range 20-170 GeV. The experimental arrangement allowed for measurements of single photon properties of these phenomena including their polarization dependences. This is significant as the theoretical description of CB and CPP is an area of active theoretical debate and development. With the theoretical approach used in this paper both the measured cross sections and polarization observables are predicted very well. This indicates a proper understanding of CB and CPP up to energies of 170 GeV. Birefringence in CPP on aligned crystals is applied to determine the polarization parameters in our measurements. New technologies for high energy photon beam optics including phase plates and polarimeters for linear and circular polarization are demonstrated in this experiment. Coherent bremsstrahlung for the strings-on-strings (SOS) orientation yields a larger enhancement for hard photons than CB for the channeling orientations of the crystal. Our measurements and our calculations indicate low photon polarizations for the high energy SOS photons.

The CERN-NA-59 experiment examined a wide range of electromagnetic processes for multi-GeV electrons and photons interacting with oriented single crystals. The various types of crystals and their orientations were used for producing photon beams and for converting and measuring their polarisation.
The radiation emitted by 178 GeV unpolarised electrons incident on a 1.5 cm thick Si crystal oriented in the Coherent Bremsstrahlung (CB) and the String-of-Strings (SOS) modes was used to obtain multi-GeV linearly polarised photon beams.
A new crystal polarimetry technique was established for measuring the linear polarisation of the photon beam. The polarimeter is based on the dependence of the Coherent Pair Production (CPP) cross section in oriented single crystals on the direction of the photon polarisation with respect to the crystal plane. Both a 1 mm thick single crystal of Germanium and a 4 mm thick multi-tile set of synthetic Diamond crystals were used as analyzers of the linear polarisation.
A birefringence phenomenon, the conversion of the linear polarisation of the photon beam into circular polarisation, was observed. This was achieved by letting the linearly polarised photon beam pass through a 10 cm thick Silicon single crystal that acted as a "quarter wave plate" (QWP) as suggested by N. Cabibbo et al.

This concerns a special case of coherent bremsstrahlung where the electron interacts with the strong fields of successive atomic strings in a plane and for which the largest enhancement of the highest energy photons is expected. The polarization of the resulting photon beam was measured by the asymmetry of electron-positron pair production in an aligned diamond crystal analyzer. By the selection of a single pair the energy and the polarization of individual photons could be measured in an the environment of multiple photons produced in the radiator crystal. We present the first experimental results on the use of a thick aligned Si crystal acting as a quarter wave plate to induce a degree of circular polarisation in a high energy linearly polarised photon beam. The linearly polarised photon beam is produced from coherent bremsstrahlung radiation by 178 GeV unpolarised electrons incident on an aligned Si crystal, acting as a radiator. The linear polarisation of the photon beam is characterised by measuring the asymmetry in electron-positron pair production in a Ge crystal, for different crystal orientations. The Ge crystal therefore acts as an analyser. The birefringence phenomenon, which converts the linear polarisation to circular polarisation, is observed by letting the linearly polarised photons beam pass through a thick Si quarter wave plate crystal, and then measuring the asymmetry in electron-positron pair production again for a selection of relative angles between the crystallographic planes of the radiator, analyser and quarter wave plate. The systematics of the difference between the measured asymmetries with and without the quarter wave plate are predicted by theory to reveal an evolution in the Stokes parameters from which the appearance of a circularly polarised component in the photon beam can be demonstrated. The measured magnitude of the circularly polarised component was consistent with the theoretical predictions, and therefore is in indication of the existence of the birefringence effect.

The cross section for coherent pair production by linearly polarised photons in the 20-170 GeV energy range was measured for photon aligned incidence on ultra-high quality diamond and germanium crystals. The theoretical description of coherent bremsstrahlung and coherent pair production phenomena is an area of active theoretical debate and development. However, under our experimental conditions, the theory predicted the combined cross section and polarisation experimental observables very well indeed. In macroscopic terms, our experiment measured a birefringence effect in pair production in a crystal. This study of this effect also constituted a measurement of the energy dependent linear polarisation of photons produced by coherent bremsstrahlung in aligned crystals. New technologies for manipulating high energy photon beams can be realised based on an improved understanding of QED phenomena at these energies. In particular, this experiment demonstrates an efficient new polarimetry technique. The pair production measurements were done using two independent methods simultaneously. The more complex method using a magnet spectrometer showed that the simpler method using a multiplicity detector was also viable.
