Within the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach we explore the impact of elastic anisotropy, electrostriction, flexoelectric couplings, and mismatch strain on the domain structure morphology in ferroelectric core-shell nanoparticles of spherical shape. We perform finite element modelling (FEM) for multiaxial ferroelectric nanoparticle cores covered with an elastically-isotropic soft or elastically-anisotropic rigid paraelectric shell, with and without mismatch strains. In the case of a core covered with a soft shell, the FEM results show that at room temperature a single polarization vortex with a dipolar kernel can be stable if the electrostriction coupling is weak. With increasing anisotropic electrostriction coupling, the vortex disappears and is replaced by complex flux-closure structures, which are formed in the equatorial plane and transform into an elongated vortex with a central 180-degree domain wall near the core poles. This complex domain morphology develops in the core due to the anisotropic electrostriction, and the flexoelectric coupling leads to an additional curvature and twist of the polarization isosurfaces. In contrast to this, FEM performed for a core covered with a rigid shell shows that, at room temperature, the anisotropic elastic properties of the shell can stabilize vortex-like structures with three flux-closure domains, which gradually cross in the equatorial plane of the core and transform into 120-degree domains near the core poles. The flexoelectric coupling leads to a noticeable curling of the flux-closure domain walls. A mismatch strain compensates the curling of the flux-closure domains in the core confined by the elastically-anisotropic rigid shell. Our analysis reveals different types of topological defects, namely Bloch point structures (BPS) and Ising lines, that form in a ferroelectric core covered with a soft or rigid shell.

The structure of 180-degree uncharged rotational domain wall in a multiaxial ferroelectric film is studied within the framework of analytical Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach. The Finite Element Modelling (FEM) is used to solve numerically the system of the coupled nonlinear Euler-Lagrange (EL) differential equations of the second order for two components of polarization. We show that the structure of the domain wall and corresponding (meta)stable phase of the film are controlled by a single master parameter, dimensionless ferroelectric anisotropy μ. We fitted the static profile of a solitary domain wall, calculated by FEM, with hyperbolic functions for polarization components, and extracted the five μ-dependent parameters from the fitting to FEM curves. The high accuracy of the fitting results allows us to conclude that the analytical functions can be treated as the high-accuracy variational solution of the static EL equations with cubic nonlinearity. We further derive the two-component analytical solutions of the static EL equations for a polydomain 180-degree domain structure in a multiaxial ferroelectric film. The analysis of the free energy dependence on the film thickness and boundary conditions at its surfaces allows to select the domain states corresponding to the minimal energy. The single-domain state is ground for zero polarization derivative at the surfaces, while the poly-domain states minimize the system energy for zero polarization at the surfaces. Counterintuitively, the energy of the polydomain states split into two levels 0 and 1 for zero polarization at the surfaces, and each of the levels is the infinite set of the close-energy sub-levels, which morphology is characterized by different structure of the two-component polarization nodes.

In the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach coupled with electrostatic equations, we performed finite element modeling of the polarization behavior in a ferroelectric barium titanate core covered with a tunable paraelectric strontium titanate shell placed in a polymer or liquid medium. A stable two-dimensional vortex is formed in the core after a zero-field relaxation of an initial random or poly-domain distribution of the polarization, where the vortex axis is directed along one of the core crystallographic axes. Subsequently, sinusoidal pulses of a homogeneous electric field with variable period, strength, and direction are applied. The field-induced changes of the vortex structure consist in the appearance of an axial kernel in the form of a prolate nanodomain, the kernel growth, an increasing orientation of the polarization along the field, and the onset of a single-domain state. We introduced the term "kernel" to name the prolate nanodomain developed near the vortex axis and polarized perpendicular to the vortex plane. In ferromagnetism, this region is generally known as the vortex core. The vortex states with a kernel possess a manifold degeneracy, appearing from three equiprobable directions of vortex axis, clockwise and counterclockwise directions of polarization rotation along the vortex axis, and two polarization directions in the kernel. This multitude of the vortex states in a single core are promising for applications of core-shell nanoparticles and their ensembles as multi-bit memory and related logic units. The rotation of a vortex kernel over a sphere, possible for the core-shell nanoparticles in a soft matter medium with controllable viscosity, may be used to imitate qubit features.

The possibility of controlling the domain structure in spherical nanoparticles of uniaxial and multiaxial ferroelectrics using a shell with tunable dielectric properties is studied in the framework of Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory. Finite element modeling and analytical calculations are performed for Sn2P2S6 and BaTiO3 nanoparticles covered with high-k polymer, temperature dependent isotropic paraelectric strontium titanate, or anisotropic liquid crystal shells with a strongly temperature dependent dielectric permittivity tensor. It appeared that the tunable paraelectric shell with a temperature dependent high dielectric permittivity (~300 - 3000) provides much more efficient screening of the nanoparticle polarization than the polymer shell with a much smaller (~10) temperature-independent permittivity. The tunable dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystal shell (~ 1 - 100) adds a new level of functionality for the control of ferroelectric domains morphology (including a single-domain state, domain stripes and cylinders, meandering and labyrinthine domains, and polarization flux-closure domains and vortexes) in comparison with isotropic paraelectric and polymer shells. The obtained results indicate the opportunities to control the domain structure morphology of ferroelectric nanoparticles covered with tunable shells, which can lead to the generation of new ferroelectric memory and advanced cryptographic materials.

Charge transport across the interfaces in complex oxides attracts a lot of attention because it allows creating novel functionalities useful for device applications. In particular, it has been observed that movable domain walls in epitaxial BiFeO3 films possess enhanced conductivity that can be used for read out in ferroelectric-based memories. In this work, the relation between the polarization and conductivity in sol-gel BiFeO3 films with special emphasis on grain boundaries as natural interfaces in polycrystalline ferroelectrics is investigated. The grains exhibit self-organized domain structure in these films, so that the "domain clusters" consisting of several grains with aligned polarization directions are formed. Surprisingly, grain boundaries between these clusters (with antiparallel polarization direction) have significantly higher electrical conductivity in comparison to "inter-cluster" grain boundaries, in which the conductivity was even smaller than in the bulk. As such, polarization-dependent conductivity of the grain boundaries was observed for the first time in ferroelectric thin films. The results are rationalized by thermodynamic modelling combined with finite element simulations of the charge and stress accumulation at the grain boundaries giving major contribution to conductivity. The observed polarization-dependent conductivity of grain boundaries in ferroelectrics opens up a new avenue for exploiting these materials in electronic devices.

When the fraction of KBr is rather small (less than 15 wt percent) the magnetic response of the composite is very weak and similar to that observed for the BLFO (pure KBr matrix without Bi1-xLaxFeO3 has no magnetic response as anticipated). However, when the fraction of KBr increases above 15percent, the magnetic response of the composite changes substantially and the field dependence of magnetization reveals ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loop with a remanent magnetization about 0.14 emu/g and coercive field about 1.8 Tesla (at room temperature). Nothing similar to the ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loop can be observed in BLFO ceramics, which magnetization quasi linearly increases with magnetic field. Different physical mechanisms were considered to explain the unusual experimental results for BLFO-KBr nanocomposites, but only those among them, which are highly sensitive to the interaction of antiferromagnetic Bi0.9La0.1FeO3 with ionic conductor KBr, can be relevant. An appropriate mechanism turned out to be ferro-magneto-ionic coupling.

Analytical description of domain structure morphology and phase diagrams of ferroelectric nanoparticles is developed in the framework of Landau Ginzburg Devonshire approach. To model realistic conditions of incomplete screening of spontaneous polarization at the particle surface, it was considered covered by an ultra-thin layer of screening charge with finite screening length. The phase diagrams, calculated for spherical Sn2P2S6 nanoparticles in coordinates "temperature vs surface screening length" by finite element modeling, demonstrate the emergence of polydomain region at the tricritical point and its broadening with increasing the screening length for the particle radius over a critical value. Metastable and stable labyrinthine domain structures exist in Sn2P2S6 nanoparticles with radius 8 and 10 nm and more, similarly to the case of CuInP2S6 nanoparticles considered previously. We derived simple analytical expressions for the boundaries between paraelectric, single-domain and poly-domain ferroelectric phases, tricritical point and the necessary condition for the appearance of labyrinthine domains, and demonstrated their high accuracy in comparison with finite element modeling results. Analytical description shows that phase diagrams and domain morphologies, which are qualitatively similar to the ones calculated in this work, can be expected in other ferroelectric nanoparticles covered by the screening charges, being rather different for the ferroelectrics with the first and second order ferroelectric-paraelectric transitions respectively.

Due to the possibility of their physical properties control by size effects, nanostructured and nanosized ferroics are among the most promising for advanced applications in nanoelectronics, nanoelectromechanics, optoelectronics, nonlinear optics and information technologies. The review discuss and analyze that the thickness of the strained films, the size and shape of the ferroic and multiferroic nanoparticles are unique tools for controlling their phase diagrams, long range order parameters, magnitude of susceptibility, magnetoelectric coupling and domain structure characteristics at fixed temperature. Significant influence of the flexochemical effect on the phase transition temperature, polar and dielectric properties is revealed for thin films and nanoparticles. Obtained results are important for understanding of the nonlinear physical processes in nanoferroics as well as for the advanced applications in nanoelectronics.

In the framework of the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) approach we studied finite size effects of the phase diagram and domain structure evolution in spherical nanoparticles of uniaxial ferroelectric. The particle surface is covered by a layer of screening charge characterized by finite screening length. The phase diagram, calculated in coordinates "particle radius vs. screening length" has a wide region of versatile poly-domain structures separating single-domain ferroelectric and nonpolar paraelectric phases. Unexpectedly, we revealed a region of stable irregular labyrinthine domains in the nanoparticles of uniaxial ferroelectric CuInP2S6 with the first order paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition. We established that the origin of labyrinthine domains is the mutual balance of LGD, polarization gradient and electrostatic energies. The branching of the domain walls appears and increases rapidly when the polarization gradient energy decreases below the critical value. Allowing for the generality of LGD approach, we expect that the gradient-induced morphological transition can be the source of labyrinthine domains appearance in many spatially-confined ferroics with long-range order parameter, including relaxors, ferromagnetics, antiferrodistortive materials and materials with incommensurate ferroic phases.

Distribution of aluminum and gallium atoms over the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the garnet structure was studied in the mixed Lu3Al5-xGaxO12 crystals using the 27Al and 71Ga MAS NMR together with the single crystal 71Ga NMR. The experimental study was accompanied by theoretical calculations based on the density functional theory in order to predict the tendency in substitutions of Al by Ga in the mixed garnets. Both experimental and theoretic results show a non-uniform distribution of Al and Ga over the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the garnet structure, with strong preferences for Ga, having larger ionic radius than Al, to occupy the tetrahedral site with smaller volume in the garnet structure. The quadrupole coupling constants and chemical shift parameters for Al and Ga nuclei have been determined for all the studied compounds as well as electric field gradients at Al and Ga nuclei were calculated in the framework of the density functional theory.

The distribution of Ga3+ and Al3+ ions in the crystal lattice is determined by the NMR method. The relative number of Ga3+ ions in the tetrahedral crystal lattice sites, the maxima positions of the TSL glow curve peaks and the corresponding trap depths are found to decrease linearly with the increasing Ga content. At the same time, the reduction of the activation energy Ea of the TSL glow curve peaks creation under irradiation in the 4f - 4d1 absorption band of Ce3+ is strongly nonlinear. To explain this effect, the suggestion is made that Ea is the energy distance between the excited 5d1 level of Ce3+ and a defect level located between the 5d1 level and the bottom of the conduction band and arising from the Ga3+ ion perturbed by the nearest neighboring Ce3+ ion. The electrons thermally released from the excited Ce3+ ions are suggested to be trapped at the perturbed Ga3+ ions resulting in the appearance of electron Ga2+ centers. In spite of the fact that the paramagnetic Ga2+ ions were not detected by EPR, the described above process was found for Fe3+ impurity ions, namely the electron transfer from the 5d1 excited levels of Ce3+ to Fe3+ was directly detected by EPR.

Using Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, we considered the impact of the flexoelectro-chemical coupling on the size effects inpolar properties and phase transitions of thin ferroelectric films with a layer of elastic defects. We investigated a typical case, when defects fill a thin layer below the top film surface with a constant concentration creating an additional gradient of elastic fields. The defective surface of the film is not covered with an electrode, but instead with an ultra-thin layer of ambient screening charges, characterized by a surface screening length. This geometry is typical for the scanning probe piezoelectric force microscopy. Obtained results revealed an unexpectedly strong effect of the joint action of Vegard stresses and flexoelectric effect (shortly flexo-chemical coupling) on the ferroelectric transition temperature, distribution of the spontaneous polarization and elastic fields, domain wall structure and period in thin PbTiO3 films containing a layer of elastic defects. A nontrivial result is the ferroelectricity persisting at film thicknesses below 4 nm, temperatures lower than 350 K and relatively high surface screening length (~0.1 nm). The origin of this phenomenon is the re-building of the domain structure in the film (namely the cross-over from c-domain stripes to a-type closure domains) when its thickness decreases below 4 nm, conditioned by the flexoelectric coupling and facilitated by negative Vegard effect. For positive Vegard effect, thicker films exhibit the appearance of pronounced maxima on the thickness dependence of the transition temperature, whose position and height can be controlled by the defect type and concentration. The revealed features may have important implications for miniaturization of ferroelectric-based devices.

For advanced applications in modern industry it is very important to reduce the volume of ferroelectric nanoparticles without serious deterioration of their polar properties. In many practically important cases fixed volume (rather than fixed size) corresponds to realistic technological conditions of nanoparticles fabrication. The letter is focused on the theoretical study of the behavior of ferroelectric polarization, paramagnetoelectric coefficient and phase diagrams of semi-ellipsoidal nanoparticles with fixed volume V. Our approach combines the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire phenomenology, classical electrostatics and elasticity theory. Our results show that the size effects of the phase diagrams and polarization of semi-ellipsoidal BiFeO3 nanoparticles nontrivially depends on V. These findings provide a path to optimize the polar properties of nanoparticles by controlling their phase diagrams at a fixed volume.

In the framework of the thermodynamic approach Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) combined with the equations of electrostatics, we investigated the effect of polarization surface screening on finite size effects of the phase diagrams, polar and dielectric properties of ferroelectric nanoparticles of different shapes. We obtained and analyzed the analytical results for the dependences of the ferroelectric phase transition temperature, critical size, spontaneous polarization and thermodynamic coercive field on the shape and size of nanoparticles. The pronounced size effect of these characteristics on the scaling parameter, the ratio of the particle characteristic size to the length of the surface screening, was revealed. Also our modeling predicts a significant impact of the flexo-chemical effect (that is a joint action of flexoelectric effect and chemical pressure) on the temperature of phase transition, polar and dielectric properties of nanoparticles when their chemical composition deviates from the stoichiometric one. We showed on the example of the stoichiometric nanosized and fine SrBi2Ta2O9 particles that except the vicinity of the critical size, where the system splitting into domains has an important role, results of analytical calculation of the spontaneous polarization have little difference from the numerical ones. We revealed a strong impact of the flexo-chemical effect on the phase transition temperature, polar and dielectric properties of SryBi2+xTa2O9 nanoparticles when the ratio Sr/Bi deviates from the stoichiometric value of 0.5 from 0.35 to 0.65. From the analysis of experimental data we derived the parameters of the theory, namely coefficients of expansion of the LGD functional, contribution of flexo-chemical effect and the length of the surface screening.

We propose a self-consistent theoretical approach capable to describe the peculiarities of the anisotropic nanodomain formation induced by a charged AFM probe on non-polar cuts of ferroelectrics. The proposed semi-phenomenological approach accounts for the difference of the threshold fields required for the domain wall motion along non-polar X- and Y - cuts, and polar Z - cut of LiNbO3. The effect steams from the fact, that the minimal distance between the equilibrium atomic positions of domain wall and the profile of lattice pinning barrier appeared different for different directions due to the crystallographic anisotropy. Using relaxation-type equation with cubic nonlinearity we calculated the polarization reversal dynamics during the probe-induced nanodomain formation for different threshold field values. The different velocity of domain growth and consequently equilibrium domain sizes on X-, Y- and Z-cuts of LiNbO3 originate from the anisotropy of the threshold field. Note that the smaller is the threshold field the larger are the domain sizes, and the fact allows explaining several times difference in nanodomain length experimentally observed on X- and Y-cuts of LiNbO3. Obtained results can give insight into the nanoscale anisotropic dynamics of polarization reversal in strongly inhomogeneous electric field.
