Abstract:
Dispersion management of few-cycle pulses is crucial for ultrafast optics and photonics. Often, nontrivial dispersion is compensated using complex optical systems or minimized through careful design of waveguides. Dispersion management of few-cycle pulses is crucial for ultrafast optics and photonics. Often, nontrivial dispersion is compensated using complex optical systems or minimized through careful design of waveguides. Here, we present dispersion-managed adiabatic frequency conversion enabling efficient downconversion of an 11.1-fs near-IR pulse to an 11.6-fs mid-IR pulse spanning an octave of bandwidth from 2-4 $μ$m. The adiabatic frequency converter is designed to impart a constant group delay over the entire bandwidth, eliminating the need for complex dispersion management and opening a new avenue for dispersion engineering in ultrafast optics and photonics. Notably, dispersion engineering through the position-dependent conversion position of an adiabatic conversion device constitutes an additional mechanism for dispersion control in ultrafast optics and photonics while maintaining high conversion efficiency for broadband pulses.

Abstract:
We investigate a new mode-locking regime in the singly-resonant OPO employing simultaneous amplitude- and frequency-modulation of the intracavity field. This OPO exhibits deterministic, "turn-key" formation of a stable, broadband, chirped frequency comb with high conversion efficiency. Comb-forming dynamics follow a simple phase-space dynamical model, governed by cavity dispersion and modulator ch…

Comb-forming dynamics follow a simple phase-space dynamical model, governed by cavity dispersion and modulator chirp, which agrees closely with full numerical simulations. The comb exhibits fast, mode-hop-free tuning over the full gain window of the OPA crystal, controlled by the modulator frequency. Conditions for comb stability, and techniques to enhance comb bandwidth through intentional phase-mismatch and chir**, are investigated.

Parametric amplifiers have allowed breakthroughs in ultrafast, strong-field, and high-energy density laser science and are an essential tool for extending the frequency range of powerful emerging diode-pumped solid-state laser technology. However, their impact is limited by inherently low quantum efficiency due to nonuniform light extraction. Here we demonstrate a new type of parametric amplifier based on hybridized nonlinear optics. Hybridization of parametric amplification with idler second harmonic generation induces unusual evolution dynamics for a fully parametric amplifier - with saturating rather than cyclic gain - observed here for the first time. This allows highly uniform light extraction enabling unprecedented efficiency for a lossless amplifier with Gaussian-like intensity profiles - a 48-dB single-stage gain with 68% quantum efficiency and 44% pump-to-signal energy conversion - a several-fold improvement over the standard. Possessing both laser-like high quantum efficiency and the advantages of thermal-loading free parametric systems, this simple approach can be implemented widely and have significant impact by increasing several-fold the power available for science and industry.

While non-Hermitian systems are normally constructed through incoherent coupling to a larger environment, recent works have shown that under certain conditions coherent couplings can be used to similar effect. We show that this new paradigm enables the behavior associated with the PT- symmetric phase of a non-Hermitian subsystem to control the containing Hermitian system through the coherent couplings. This is achieved in parametric nonlinear wave mixing where simultaneous second harmonic generation replaces the role of loss to induce non-Hermitian behavior that persists through a full exchange of power within the Hermitian system. These findings suggest a new approach for the engineering of dynamics where energy recovery and sustainability are of importance that could be of significance for photonics and laser science.

We illustrate that a Hermitian nonlinear optical system consisting of hybridized parametric amplification and second harmonic generation mimics non-Hermitian evolution dynamics. Oscillation dam**, evolution to a static steady state, and exceptional points arise from the use of second harmonic generation as an irreversible loss mechanism. The investigated system can be used to solve problems of inefficiency in parametric amplifier systems used widely in laser science and industrial applications. More generally, these findings suggest a new paradigm for the engineering of system dynamics where energy recovery and system sustainability are of importance.
