Generation of high-fidelity amplified pulse bursts with a regular interpulse interval yields, in the spectral domain, an equidistant pattern of narrowband spectral modes, similar to frequency combs produced by cw mode-locked lasers, but with greatly increased pulse energy. Despite their great potential for nonlinear spectroscopy, material processing, etc., such long frequency-stable bursts are difficult to generate and amplify because of prominent temporal intensity modulation even after strong dispersive pulse stretching. This study presents a burst generation method based on a master-oscillator regenerative-amplifier system that allows for chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) with high scalability in pulse number. A gradual smoothing of temporal intensity profiles at an increasing number of pulses is discovered, demonstrating an unexpected recovery of the CPA performance at terahertz (THz) intraburst repetition rates. In consequence, a self-referenced stable burst spectral peak structure with megahertz (MHz) peak width is generated, without risk of amplifier damage caused by interference of chirped pulses. This result eliminates limitations in burst amplification and paves the way for advancements in ultrashort-pulse burst technology, particularly for its use in nonlinear optical applications.

We demonstrate a novel technique for producing high-order harmonics with designer spectral combs in the extreme ultraviolet-soft X-ray range for resonance applications using spectrally controlled visible lasers. Our approach enables continuous tunability of the harmonic peaks while maintaining superb laser-like features such as coherence, narrow bandwidth, and brightness. The harmonics are conveniently shifted towards lower or higher energies by varying the infrared pulse parameters, second harmonic generation phase-matching conditions, and gas density inside a spectral-broadening waveguide. In the time domain, the X-rays are estimated to emerge as a train of sub-300 attosecond pulses, making this source ideal for studying dynamic processes in ferromagnetic nanostructures and other materials through resonant multidimensional coherent diffractive imaging or other X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques. Moreover, the visible driving laser beams exhibit an ultrashort sub-10 fs pulse dues to nonlinear self-compression with a more than 30-fold enhancement in peak intensity that also extends the tunability of the linewidth of the harmonic combs.

We demonstrate a versatile technique for generating continuously wavelength-tunable laser waveforms, with mJ pulse energies and ultrashort pulse durations down to few-cycle in the ultraviolet C and visible spectral ranges. Using the processes of self-phase modulation or Raman-induced spectral broadening, we substantially expand the spectrum of a femtosecond 1030 nm Yb:CaF$_{2}$ laser, allowing for an extensive wavelength-tunability of the second and fourth harmonics of the laser within the visible and ultraviolet C spectral regions at 460-580 nm and 230-290 nm. In addition, our approach exploits nonlinearly assisted self-compression in the second harmonic upconversion of the spectrally broadened infrared pulses with high-order dispersion. This results in 8-30 femtosecond pulses in the visible with an intensity enhancement of up to 30 times. Such an ultrashort visible and ultraviolet C source is ideal for investigating ultrafast dynamics in molecules, solids, and bio and nano systems. Furthermore, this tunable light source enables the generation of bright, narrow-bandwidth, continuously wavelength-tunable, coherent light in the extreme ultraviolet to soft X-ray spectral region. Theoretically, the X-ray pulse structure can consist of sub-200 as pulse trains, making such a source highly suitable for dynamic multidimensional imaging. This includes coherent diffractive imaging of ferromagnetic nanostructures where resonant X-ray scattering is essential, as well as X-ray absorption spectroscopies of advanced quantum materials at pico-nanometer spatial and atto-femtosecond temporal scales.

We present a novel approach to achieve hyper spectral resolution, high sensitive detection, and high speed data acquisition Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy by employing amplified offset-phase controlled fs-pulse bursts. In this approach, the Raman-shift spectrum is obtained through the direct map** between the bursts offset phase and the Raman-shift frequency, which requires neither wavelength-detuning as in the long-pulse method nor precise dispersion management and delay scanning with movable parts as in the spectral focusing technique. This method is demonstrated numerically by solving the coupled non-linear Schroedinger equations and the properties of this approach are systematically investigated. The product of the spectral resolution and the pixel dwell time in this work is below 2 microsiemens/centimeter, which is at least an order of magnitude lower than previous methods. This previously untouched area will greatly expand the applications of SRS and holds the potential for discovering new science.

Multi-photon resonant spectroscopies require tunable narrowband excitation to deliver spectral selectivity and, simultaneously, high temporal intensity to drive a nonlinear-optical process. These contradictory requirements are achievable with bursts of ultrashort pulses, which provides both high intensity and tunable narrowband peaks in the frequency domain arising from spectral interference. However, femtosecond pulse bursts need special attention during their amplification [Optica 7, 1758 (2020)], which requires spectral peak suppression to increase the energy safely extractable from a chirped-pulse amplifier (CPA). Here, we present a method combining safe laser CPA, relying on spectral scrambling, with a parametric frequency converter that automatically restores the desired spectral peak structure and delivers narrow linewidths for bursts of ultrashort pulses at microjoule energies. The shown results pave the way to new high-energy ultrafast laser sources with controllable spectral selectivity.

Femtosecond dual-comb lasers have revolutionized linear Fourier-domain spectroscopy by offering a rapid motion-free, precise and accurate measurement mode with easy registration of the combs beat note in the RF domain. Extensions of this technique found already application for nonlinear time-resolved spectroscopy within the energy limit available from sources operating at the full oscillator repetition rate. Here, we present a technique based on time filtering of femtosecond frequency combs by pulse gating in a laser amplifier. This gives the required boost to the pulse energy and provides the flexibility to engineer pairs of arbitrarily delayed wavelength-tunable pulses for pump-probe techniques. Using a dual-channel millijoule amplifier, we demonstrate programmable generation of both extremely short, fs, and extremely long (>ns) interpulse delays. A predetermined arbitrarily chosen interpulse delay can be directly realized in each successive amplifier shot, eliminating the massive waiting time required to alter the delay setting by means of an optomechanical line or an asynchronous scan of two free-running oscillators. We confirm the versatility of this delay generation method by measuring chi^(2) cross-correlation and chi^(3) multicomponent population recovery kinetics.

In this paper, we present a novel stochastic and spatially lumped multi-mode model to describe the nonlinear dynamics of actively Q-switched lasers and random perturbations due to amplified spontaneous emission. This model will serve as a basis for the design of (nonlinear) control and estimation strategies and thus a high value is set on its computational efficiency. Therefore, a common traveling-wave model is chosen as a starting point and a number of model-order reduction steps are performed. As a result, a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations for the dynamic behavior of the laser during a switching cycle is obtained. A semi-analytic solution of these differential equations yields expressions for the population inversion after a switching cycle and for the output energy, which are then used to formulate a nonlinear discrete-time model for the pulse-to-pulse dynamics. Simulation studies including models with different levels of complexity and first experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Amplified bursts of laser pulses are sought for various machining, deposition, spectroscopic and strong-field applications. Standard frequency- and time-domain techniques for pulse division become inadequate when intraburst repetition rates reach the terahertz (THz) range as a consequence of inaccessible spectral resolution, requirement for interferometric stability, and collapse of the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) concept due to the loss of usable bandwidth needed for safe temporal stretching. Avoiding the burst amplification challenge and resorting to a lossy post-division of an isolated laser pulse after CPA leaves the limitations of frequency- and time-domain techniques unsolved. In this letter, we demonstrate an approach that successfully combines amplitude and phase sha** of THz bursts, formed using the Vernier effect, with active stabilization of spectral modes and efficient energy extraction from a CPA regenerative amplifier. As proof of concept, the amplified bursts of femtosecond near-infrared pulses are down-converted into tunable THz-frequency pulses via optical rectification.

Filamentation of ultrashort laser pulses in the atmosphere offers unique opportunities for long-range transmission of high-power laser radiation and standoff detection. With the critical power of self-focusing scaling as the laser wavelength squared, the quest for longer-wavelength drivers, which would radically increase the peak power and, hence, the laser energy in a single filament, has been ongoing over two decades, during which time the available laser sources limited filamentation experiments in the atmosphere to the near-infrared and visible ranges. Here, we demonstrate filamentation of ultrashort mid-infrared pulses in the atmosphere for the first time. We show that, with the spectrum of a femtosecond laser driver centered at 3.9 um, right at the edge of the atmospheric transmission window, radiation energies above 20 mJ and peak powers in excess of 200 GW can be transmitted through the atmosphere in a single filament. Our studies reveal unique properties of mid-infrared filaments, where the generation of powerful mid-infrared supercontinuum is accompanied by unusual scenarios of optical harmonic generation, giving rise to remarkably broad radiation spectra, stretching from the visible to the mid-infrared.
