We use holography to study the large spin $J$ limit of the spectrum of low energy states with charge $Q$ under a $U(1)$ conserved current in CFTs in $d>2$ dimensions, with a focus on $d=3$ and $d=4$. For $Q=2$, the spectrum of such states is known to be universal and properly captured by the long-distance limit of holographic theories, regardless of whether the CFT itself is holographic. We study in detail the holographic description of such states at $Q>2$, by considering the contribution to the energies of $Q$ scalar particles coming from single photon and graviton exchange in the bulk of AdS; in some cases, scalar exchange and bulk contact terms are also included. For a range of finite values of $Q$ and $J$, we numerically diagonalize the Hamiltonian for such states and examine the resulting spectrum and wavefunctions as a function of the dimension $Δ$ of the charge-one operator and the central charges $c_{\mathcal{T}}, c_{\mathcal{J}}$ of the stress tensor and U(1) current, finding multiple regions in parameter space with qualitatively different behavior. We discuss the extension of these results to the regime of parametrically large charge $Q$, as well as to what extent such results are expected to hold universally, beyond the limit of holographic CFTs. We compare our holographic computations to results from the conformal bootstrap for the $3d$ O(2) model at $Q=3$ and $Q=4$ and find excellent agreement.

We study 2d Ising Field Theory (IFT) in the low-temperature phase in lightcone quantization, and show that integrating out zero modes generates a very compact form for the effective lightcone interaction that depends on the finite volume vacuum expectation value of the $σ$ operator. This form is most naturally understood in a conformal basis for the lightcone Hilbert space. We further verify that this simple form reproduces to high accuracy results for the spectra, the $c$-function, and the form-factors from integrability methods for the magnetic deformation of IFT. For generic non-integrable values of parameters we also compute the above observables and compare our numeric results to those of equal-time truncation. In particular, we report on new measurements of various bound-state form-factors as well as the stress-tensor spectral density. We find that the stress tensor spectral density provides additional evidence that certain resonances of IFT are surprisingly narrow, even at generic strong coupling. Explicit example code for constructing the effective Hamiltonian is included in an appendix.

We implement methods that efficiently impose integrality -- i.e., the condition that the coefficients of characters in the partition function must be integers -- into numerical modular bootstrap. We demonstrate the method with a number of examples where it can be used to strengthen modular bootstrap results. First, we show that, with a mild extra assumption, imposing integrality improves the bound on the maximal allowed gap in dimensions of operators in theories with a $U(1)^c$ symmetry at $c=3$, and reduces it to the value saturated by the $SU(4)_1$ WZW model point of $c=3$ Narain lattices moduli space. Second, we show that our method can be used to eliminate all but a discrete set of points saturating the bound from previous Virasoro modular bootstrap results. Finally, when central charge is close to $1$, we can slightly improve the upper bound on the scaling dimension gap.

Conformal interfaces separating two conformal field theories (CFTs) provide maps between different CFTs, and naturally exist in nature as domain walls between different phases. One particularly interesting construction of a conformal interface is the renormalization group (RG) domain wall between CFTs. For a given Virasoro minimal model $\mathcal{M}_{k+3,k+2}$, an RG domain wall can be generated by a specific deformation which triggers an RG flow towards its adjacent Virasoro minimal model $\mathcal{M}_{k+2,k+1}$ with the deformation turned on over part of the space. An algebraic construction of this domain wall was proposed by Gaiotto in \cite{Gaiotto:2012np}. In this paper, we will provide a study of this RG domain wall for the minimal case $k=2$, which can be thought of as a nonperturbative check of the construction. In this case the wall is separating the Tricritical Ising Model (TIM) CFT and the Ising Model (IM) CFT. We will check the analytical results of correlation functions from the RG brane construction with the numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation using a lattice model proposed in \cite{Grover:2012bm,Grover:2013rc}, and find a perfect agreement. We comment on possible experimental realizations of this RG domain wall.

We do this by taking the infinite momentum limit of equal-time quantization and integrating out all except for the chiral modes of the theory. Our main application of this method is to the Ising Field Theory (IFT), with an energy and magnetic deformation, where we compute the effective lightcone Hamiltonian numerically and check it against results from TCSA. Remarkably, in the low-temperature phase, the Lorentz invariant effective Hamiltonian at infinite momentum takes a very compact form and depends on the volume only through the finite volume vacuum expectation value of $\langleσ\rangle$, the spin operator.

We consider two classes of amplitudes: the fully nonperturbative ones and effective field theory (EFT) ones with a cut-off scale $M$. Using the primal numerical method which allows us to impose full non-linear unitarity, we construct novel bounds on various observables in $2 \leq d \leq 4$ space-time dimensions for both classes of amplitudes. We show that our bounds are much stronger than the ones obtained by using linearized unitarity or positivity only. We discuss applications of our bounds to constraining EFTs. Finally, we compare our bounds to the amplitude in $φ^4$ theory computed perturbatively at weak coupling, and find that they saturate the bounds.

We study aspects of chaos and thermodynamics at strong coupling in a scalar model using LCT numerical methods. We find that our eigenstate spectrum satisfies Wigner-Dyson statistics and that the coefficients describing eigenstates in our basis satisfy Random Matrix Theory (RMT) statistics. At weak coupling, though the bulk of states satisfy RMT statistics, we find several scar states as well. We then use these chaotic states to compute the equation of state of the model, obtaining results consistent with Conformal Field Theory (CFT) expectations at temperatures above the scale of relevant interactions. We also test the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis by computing the expectation value of local operators in eigenstates, and check that their behavior is consistent with thermal CFT values at high temperatures. Finally, we compute the Spectral Form Factor (SFF), which has the expected behavior associated with the equation of state at short times and chaos at long times. We also propose a new technique for extracting the connected part of the SFF without the need of disorder averaging by using different symmetry sectors.

While there are no definitive signatures to date, there exists a rich ecosystem of experiments searching for signals for a broad class of dark matter models, at different epochs of cosmic history, and through a variety of processes with different characteristic energy scales. Given the multitude of candidates and search strategies, effective field theory has been an important tool for parametrizing the possible interactions between dark matter and Standard Model probes, for quantifying and improving model-independent uncertainties, and for robust estimation of detection rates in the presence of large perturbative corrections. This white paper summarizes a wide range of effective field theory applications for connecting dark matter theories to experiments.

We apply the theory of harmonic analysis on the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ to partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We decompose the partition function of $c$ free bosons on a Narain lattice into eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of worldsheet moduli space $\mathbb H/SL(2,\mathbb Z)$, and of target space moduli space $O(c,c;\mathbb Z)\backslash O(c,c;\mathbb R)/O(c)\times O(c)$. This decomposition manifests certain properties of Narain theories and ensemble averages thereof. We extend the application of spectral theory to partition functions of general two-dimensional conformal field theories, and explore its meaning in connection to AdS$_3$ gravity. An implication of harmonic analysis is that the local operator spectrum is fully determined by a certain subset of degeneracies.

We use the form factor of the stress tensor at $s\le 0$ and its spectral density computed using Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT), and inject them into the generalized S-matrix bootstrap set-up. The obtained results for the scattering amplitude and the form factor are fully reliable only in the elastic regime. We independently construct the "pure" S-matrix bootstrap bounds (bootstrap without including matrix elements of local operators), and find that the sinh-Gordon model and its analytic continuation the "staircase model" saturate these bounds. Surprisingly, the $φ^4$ two-particle scattering amplitude also very nearly saturates these bounds, and moreover is extremely close to that of the sinh-Gordon/staircase model.

We use the method of Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT) to obtain form factors and spectral densities of local operators $\mathcal{O}$ in $φ^4$ theory in two dimensions. We show how to use the Hamiltonian eigenstates from LCT to obtain form factors that are matrix elements of a local operator $\mathcal{O}$ between single-particle bra and ket states, and we develop methods that significantly reduce errors resulting from the finite truncation of the Hilbert space. We extrapolate these form factors as a function of momentum to the regime where, by crossing symmetry, they are form factors of $\mathcal{O}$ between the vacuum and a two-particle asymptotic scattering state. We also compute the momentum-space time-ordered two-point functions of local operators in LCT. These converge quickly at momenta away from branch cuts, allowing us to indirectly obtain the time-ordered correlator and the spectral density at the branch cuts. We focus on the case where the local operator $\mathcal{O}$ is the trace $Θ$ of the stress tensor.

Following recent work on heavy-light correlators in higher-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) with a large central charge $C_T$, we clarify the properties of stress tensor composite primary operators of minimal twist, $[T^m]$, using arguments in both CFT and gravity. We provide an efficient proof that the three-point coupling $\langle \mathcal{O}_L\mathcal{O}_L [T^m]\rangle$, where $\mathcal{O}_L$ is any light primary operator, is independent of the purely gravitational action. Next, we consider corrections to this coupling due to additional interactions in AdS effective field theory and the corresponding dual CFT. When the CFT contains a non-zero three-point coupling $\langle TT \mathcal{O}_L\rangle$, the three-point coupling $\langle \mathcal{O}_L\mathcal{O}_L [T^2]\rangle$ is modified at large $C_T$ if $\langle TT\mathcal{O}_L \rangle \sim \sqrt{C_T}$. This scaling is obeyed by the dilaton, by Kaluza-Klein modes of prototypical supergravity compactifications, and by scalars in stress tensor multiplets of supersymmetric CFTs. Quartic derivative interactions involving the graviton and the light probe field dual to $\mathcal{O}_L$ can also modify the minimal-twist couplings; these local interactions may be generated by integrating out a spin-$\ell \geq 2$ bulk field at tree level, or any spin $\ell$ at loop level. These results show how the minimal-twist OPE coefficients can depend on the higher-spin gap scale, even perturbatively.

This document is a self-contained, pedagogical introduction and "how-to" manual for LCT. We focus on 2D QFTs which have UV descriptions as free CFTs containing scalars, fermions, and gauge fields, providing a rich starting arena for LCT applications. Along our way, we develop several new techniques and innovations that greatly enhance the efficiency and applicability of LCT. These include the development of CFT radial quantization methods for computing Hamiltonian matrix elements and a new SUSY-inspired way of avoiding state-dependent counterterms and maintaining chiral symmetry. We walk readers through the construction of their own basic LCT code, sufficient for small truncation cutoffs. Holographic Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) are usually studied in a limit where the gravity description is weakly coupled. By contrast, lattice quantum field theory can be used as a tool for doing computations in a wider class of holographic CFTs where gravity remains weak but nongravitational interactions {\it in AdS} become strong. We take preliminary steps for studying such theories on the lattice by constructing the discretized theory of a scalar field in AdS$_2$ and investigating its approach to the continuum limit in the free and perturbative regimes. Our main focus is on finite sub-lattices of maximally symmetric tilings of hyperbolic space. Up to boundary effects, these tilings preserve the triangle group as a large discrete subgroup of AdS$_2$, but have a minimum lattice spacing that is comparable to the radius of curvature of the underlying spacetime. We quantify the effects of the lattice spacing as well as the boundary effects, and find that they can be accurately modeled by modifications within the framework of the continuum limit description. We also show how to do refinements of the lattice that shrink the lattice spacing at the cost of breaking the triangle group symmetry of the maximally symmetric tilings.

The theory depends on a single dimensionless coupling $\bar{g}$, and is expected to have a critical point at a tuned value $\bar{g}_*$ where it flows in the IR to the Tricritical Ising Model (TIM); the theory spontaneously breaks the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry on one side of this phase transition, and breaks SUSY on the other side. We calculate the spectrum of energies as a function of $\bar{g}$ and see the gap close as the critical point is approached, and numerically read off the critical exponent $ν$ in TIM. Beyond the critical point, the gap remains nearly zero, in agreement with the expectation of a massless Goldstino. We also study spectral functions of local operators on both sides of the phase transition and compare to analytic predictions where possible. In particular, we use the Zamolodchikov $C$-function to map the entire phase diagram of the theory. Crucial to this analysis is the fact that our truncation is able to preserve supersymmetry sufficiently to avoid any additional fine tuning.

Gravitational shockwaves are insensitive to higher-curvature corrections in the action. Recent work found that the OPE coefficients of lowest-twist multi-stress-tensor operators, computed holographically in a planar black hole background, are insensitive as well. In this paper, we analyze the relation between these two limits. We explicitly evaluate the two-point function on a shockwave background to all orders in a large central charge expansion. In the geodesic limit, we find that the ANEC exponentiates in the multi-stress-tensor sector. To compare with the black hole limit, we obtain a recursion relation for the lowest-twist products of two stress tensors in a spherical black hole background, letting us efficiently compute their OPE coefficients and prove their insensitivity to higher curvature terms. After resumming the lowest-twist stress-tensors and analytically continuing their contributions to the Regge limit, we find a perfect agreement with the shockwave computation. We also discuss the role of double-trace operators, global degenerate states, and multi-stress-tensor conformal blocks. These holographic results suggest the existence of a larger universal structure in higher-dimensional CFTs.

We probe the conformal block structure of a scalar four-point function in $d\geq2$ conformal field theories by including higher-order derivative terms in a bulk gravitational action. We consider a heavy-light four-point function as the boundary correlator at large central charge. Such a four-point function can be computed, on the gravity side, as a two-point function of the light operator in a black hole geometry created by the heavy operator. We consider analytically solving the corresponding scalar field equation in a near-boundary expansion and find that the multi-stress tensor conformal blocks are insensitive to the horizon boundary condition. The main result of this paper is that the lowest-twist operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients of the multi-stress tensor conformal blocks are universal: they are fixed by the dimension of the light operators and the ratio between the dimension of the heavy operator and the central charge $C_T$. Neither supersymmetry nor unitary is assumed. Higher-twist coefficients, on the other hand, generally are not protected. A recursion relation allows us to efficiently compute universal lowest-twist coefficients. The universality result hints at the potential existence of a higher-dimensional Virasoro-like symmetry near the lightcone. While we largely focus on the planar black hole limit in this paper, we include some preliminary analysis of the spherical black hole case in an appendix.

We argue that they are nevertheless the same theory nonperturbatively, and that furthermore the nonperturbative map between bare parameters can be extracted from ET perturbation theory via Borel resummation of the mass gap. We test this map by using it to compare physical quantities computed using numerical Hamiltonian truncation methods in ET and LC.

We propose a two-parameter family of modular invariant partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) holographically dual to pure three-dimensional gravity in anti de Sitter space. Our two parameters control the central charge, and the representation of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. At large central charge, the partition function has a gap to the first nontrivial primary state of $\frac{c}{24}$. As the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ representation dimension gets large, the partition function exhibits some of the qualitative features of an irrational CFT. This, for instance, is captured in the behavior of the spectral form factor. As part of these analyses, we find similar behavior in the minimal model spectral form factor as $c$ approaches $1$.

We describe how LC quantization can drastically simplify Hamiltonian truncation methods applied to some large N CFTs, and discuss how the prescription identifies theories where these simplifications occur. We recently used Virasoro symmetry considerations to propose an exact formula for a bulk proto-field $φ$ in AdS$_3$. In this paper we study the propagator $\langle φφ\rangle$. We show that many techniques from the study of conformal blocks can be generalized to compute it, including the semiclassical monodromy method and both forms of the Zamolodchikov recursion relations. When the results from recursion are expanded at large central charge, they match gravitational perturbation theory for a free scalar field coupled to gravity in our chosen gauge.
We find that although the propagator is finite and well-defined at long distances, its perturbative expansion in $G_N = \frac{3}{2c}$ exhibits UV/IR mixing effects. If we nevertheless interpret $\langle φφ\rangle$ as a probe of bulk locality, then when $G_N m_φ\ll 1$ locality breaks down at the new short-distance scale $σ_* \sim \sqrt[4]{G_N R_{AdS}^3}$. For $φ$ with very large bulk mass, or at small central charge, bulk locality fails at the AdS length scale. In all cases, locality `breakdown' manifests as singularities or branch cuts at spacelike separation arising from non-perturbative quantum gravitational effects.

We study the implications of modular invariance on 2d CFT partition functions with abelian or non-abelian currents when chemical potentials for the charges are turned on, i.e. when the partition functions are "flavored". We begin with a new proof of the transformation law for the modular transformation of such partition functions. Then we proceed to apply modular bootstrap techniques to constrain the spectrum of charged states in the theory. We improve previous upper bounds on the state with the greatest "mass-to-charge" ratio in such theories, as well as upper bounds on the weight of the lightest charged state and the charge of the weakest charged state in the theory. We apply the extremal functional method to theories that saturate such bounds, and in several cases we find the resulting prediction for the occupation numbers are precisely integers. Because such theories sometimes do not saturate a bound on the full space of states but do saturate a bound in the neutral sector of states, we find that adding flavor allows the extremal functional method to solve for some partition functions that would not be accessible to it otherwise.

To bolster the connection between Virasoro conformal blocks and AdS$_3$ quantum gravity, we study sl$(2)$ Chern-Simons Wilson line networks and revisit the idea that they compute a variety of CFT$_2$ observables, including Virasoro OPE blocks, exactly. We verify this in the semiclassical large central charge limit and to low orders in a perturbative $1/c$ expansion.
Wilson lines connecting the boundary to points in the bulk play a natural role in bulk reconstruction. Because quantum gravity in AdS$_3$ is rigidly fixed by Virasoro symmetry, we argue that sl$(2)$ Wilson lines provide building blocks for background independent bulk reconstruction. In particular, we show explicitly that they automatically compute the uniformizing coordinates appropriate to any background state.

Recent work has demonstrated that black hole thermodynamics and information loss/restoration in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ can be derived almost entirely from the behavior of the Virasoro conformal blocks at large central charge, with relatively little dependence on the precise details of the CFT spectrum or OPE coefficients. Here, we elaborate on the non-perturbative behavior of Virasoro blocks by classifying all `saddles' that can contribute for arbitrary values of external and internal operator dimensions in the semiclassical large central charge limit. The leading saddles, which determine the naive semiclassical behavior of the Virasoro blocks, all decay exponentially at late times, and at a rate that is independent of internal operator dimensions. Consequently, the semiclassical contribution of high-energy states does not resolve a well-known version of the information loss problem in AdS$_3$. However, we identify two infinite classes of sub-leading saddles, and one of these classes does not decay at late times.

We use the numerical conformal bootstrap in two dimensions to search for finite, closed sub-algebras of the operator product expansion (OPE), without assuming unitarity. We find the minimal models as special cases, as well as additional lines of solutions that can be understood in the Coulomb gas formalism. All the solutions we find that contain the vacuum in the operator algebra are cases where the external operators of the bootstrap equation are degenerate operators, and we argue that this follows analytically from the expressions in arXiv:1202.4698 for the crossing matrices of Virasoro conformal blocks. Our numerical analysis is a special case of the "Gliozzi" bootstrap method, and provides a simpler setting in which to study technical challenges with the method.
In the supplementary material, we provide a Mathematica notebook that automates the calculation of the crossing matrices and OPE coefficients for degenerate operators using the formulae of Dotsenko and Fateev.

We discuss information loss from black hole physics in AdS$_3$, focusing on two sharp signatures infecting CFT$_2$ correlators at large central charge $c$: 'forbidden singularities' arising from Euclidean-time periodicity due to the effective Hawking temperature, and late-time exponential decay in the Lorentzian region. We study an infinite class of examples where forbidden singularities can be resolved by non-perturbative effects at finite $c$, and we show that the resolution has certain universal features that also apply in the general case. Analytically continuing to the Lorentzian regime, we find that the non-perturbative effects that resolve forbidden singularities qualitatively change the behavior of correlators at times $t \sim S_{BH}$, the black hole entropy. This may resolve the exponential decay of correlators at late times in black hole backgrounds. By Borel resumming the $1/c$ expansion of exact examples, we explicitly identify 'information-restoring' effects from heavy states that should correspond to classical solutions in AdS$_3$. Our results suggest a line of inquiry towards a more precise formulation of the gravitational path integral in AdS$_3$.

Pure theories of AdS$_3$ quantum gravity are conjectured to be dual to CFTs with sparse spectra of light primary operators. The sparsest possible spectrum consistent with modular invariance includes only black hole states above the vacuum. Witten conjectured the existence of a family of extremal CFTs, which realize this spectrum for all admissible values of the central charge. We consider the quantum corrections to the classical spectrum, and propose a specific modification of Witten's conjecture which takes into account the existence of "small" black hole states. These have zero classical horizon area, with a calculable entropy attributed solely to loop effects. Our conjecture passes various consistency checks, especially when generalized to include theories with supersymmetry. In theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, this "near-extremal CFT" proposal precisely evades the no-go results of Gaberdiel et al.

Universal features of these correlators can be extracted from the Virasoro conformal blocks in CFT2, which encapsulate quantum gravitational effects in AdS3. At infinite central charge c, the Virasoro vacuum block provides an avatar of the black hole information paradox in the form of periodic Euclidean-time singularities that must be resolved at finite c.
We compute Virasoro blocks in the heavy-light, large c limit, extending our previous results by determining perturbative 1/c corrections. We obtain explicit closed-form expressions for both the `semi-classical' $h_L^2 / c^2$ and `quantum' $h_L / c^2$ corrections to the vacuum block, and we provide integral formulas for general Virasoro blocks. We comment on the interpretation of our results for thermodynamics, discussing how monodromies in Euclidean time can arise from AdS calculations using `geodesic Witten diagrams'. We expect that only non-perturbative corrections in 1/c can resolve the singularities associated with the information paradox.

The Virasoro vacuum conformal block, which is the sum of all the tree diagrams, obeys a differential recursion relation generalizing that of the Catalan numbers. Classical field configurations such as the Coulomb potential and Schwarzschild solution are built from the t-channel exchange of many light degrees of freedom. We study the CFT analog of this phenomenon, which we term the `eikonalization' of conformal blocks. We show that when an operator $T$ appears in the OPE $\mathcal{O}(x) \mathcal{O}(0)$, then the large spin $\ell$ Fock space states $[TT \cdots T]_{\ell}$ also appear in this OPE with a computable coefficient. The sum over the exchange of these Fock space states in an $\langle \mathcal{O} \mathcal{O} \mathcal{O} \mathcal{O} \rangle$ correlator build the classical `$T$ field' in the dual AdS description. In some limits the sum of all Fock space exchanges can be represented as the exponential of a single $T$ exchange in the 4-pt correlator of $\mathcal{O}$. Our results should be useful for systematizing $1/\ell$ perturbation theory in general CFTs and simplifying the computation of large spin OPE coefficients. As examples we obtain the leading $\log \ell$ dependence of Fock space conformal block coefficients, and we directly compute the OPE coefficients of the simplest `triple-trace' operators.

We show that in 2d CFTs at large central charge, the coupling of the stress tensor to heavy operators can be re-absorbed by placing the CFT in a non-trivial background metric. We show that in 2d CFTs at large central charge, the coupling of the stress tensor to heavy operators can be re-absorbed by placing the CFT in a non-trivial background metric. This leads to a more precise computation of the Virasoro conformal blocks between heavy and light operators, which are shown to be equivalent to global conformal blocks evaluated in the new background. We also generalize to the case where the operators carry U(1) charges. The refined Virasoro blocks can be used as the seed for a new Virasoro block recursion relation expanded in the heavy-light limit. We comment on the implications of our results for the universality of black hole thermality in $AdS_3$, or equivalently, the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for $CFT_2$ at large central charge.

We study the dynamics of a quantum critical boson coupled to a Fermi surface in intermediate energy regimes where the Landau dam** of the boson can be parametrically controlled, either via large Fermi velocity or by large N techniques. We focus on develo** a systematic approach to studying the BCS instability, including careful treatment of the enhanced log^2 and log^3 singularities which appear already at 1-loop. We also treat possible instabilities to charge density wave (CDW) formation, and compare the scales Lambda_{BCS} and Lambda_{CDW} of the onset of the instabilities in different parametric regimes. We address the question of whether the dressing of the fermions into a non-Fermi liquid via interactions with the order parameter field can happen at energies > Lambda_{BCS}, Lambda_{CDW}.

We study the renormalization of the Fermi surface coupled to a massless boson near three spatial dimensions. For this, we set up a Wilsonian RG with independent decimation procedures for bosons and fermions, where the four-fermion interaction "Landau parameters" run already at tree level. Our explicit one loop analysis resolves previously found obstacles in the renormalization of finite density field theory, including logarithmic divergences in non-local interactions and the appearance of multilogarithms. The key aspects of the RG are the above tree level running, and a UV-IR mixing between virtual bosons and fermions at the quantum level, which is responsible for the renormalization of the Fermi velocity. We apply this approach to the renormalization of $2 k_F$ singularities, and a companion paper considers the RG for Fermi surface instabilities. We end with some comments on the renormalization of finite density field theory with the inclusion of Landau dam** of the boson.

A model-independent treatment of dark-matter particle elastic scattering has been developed, yielding the most general interaction for WIMP-nucleon low-energy scattering, and the resulting amplitude has been embedded in the nucleus, taking into account the selection rules imposed by parity and time-reversal. One finds that, in contrast to the usual spin-independent/spin-dependent (SI/SD) formulation, the resulting cross section contains six independent nuclear response functions, three of which are associated with possible velocity-dependent interactions. We find that current experiments are four orders of magnitude more sensitive to derivative couplings than is apparent in the standard SI/SD treatment, which necessarily associates such interactions with cross sections proportional to the square of the WIMP velocity relative to the nuclear center of mass.

We begin by explicating a recent proof of the cluster decomposition principle in AdS_{d+1} from the CFT_d bootstrap in d > 2. The CFT argument also computes the leading interactions between distant objects in AdS, and we confirm the universal agreement between the CFT bootstrap and AdS gravity in the semi-classical limit. We proceed to study the generalization to 2d CFTs, which requires knowledge of the Virasoro conformal blocks in a lightcone OPE limit. We compute these blocks in a semiclassical, large central charge approximation, and use them to prove a suitably modified theorem. In particular, from the 2d bootstrap we prove the existence of large spin operators with fixed 'anomalous dimensions' indicative of the presence of deficit angles in AdS_3. As we approach the threshold for the BTZ black hole, interpreted as a CFT scaling dimension, the twist spectrum of large spin operators becomes dense. Due to the exchange of the Virasoro identity block, primary states above the BTZ threshold mimic a thermal background for light operators. We derive the BTZ quasi-normal modes, and we use the bootstrap equation to prove that the twist spectrum is dense. Corrections to thermality could be obtained from a more refined computation of the Virasoro conformal blocks.

We study the low-energy behavior of metals coupled to gapless bosons. This problem arises in several contexts in modern condensed matter physics; we focus on the theory of metals near continuous quantum phase transitions (where the boson is the order parameter). In the vicinity of d=3 spatial dimensions, the upper critical dimension of the theory, the ratio of fermion and boson speeds, v/c, acts as an additional control parameter, enabling us to access IR fixed points where this ratio vanishes. This limit corresponds to a non-Fermi liquid coupled to bosons with critical exponents governed by the Wilson-Fisher fixed point.
