Quantum teleportation is a concept that fascinates and confuses many people, in particular, given that it combines quantum physics and the concept of teleportation. With quantum teleportation likely to play a key role in several communication technologies and the quantum internet in the future, it is imperative to create learning tools and approaches that can accurately and effectively communicate the concept. Recent research has indicated the importance of teachers enthusing students about the topic of quantum physics. Therefore, educators at both high school and early university level need to find engaging and perhaps unorthodox ways of teaching complex, yet interesting topics such as quantum teleportation. In this paper, we present a paradigm to teach the concept of quantum teleportation using the Christmas gift-bringer Santa Claus. Using the example of Santa Claus, we use an unusual context to explore the key aspects of quantum teleportation, and all without being overly abstract. In addition, we outline a worksheet designed for use in the classroom setting which is based on common naive conceptions from quantum physics. This worksheet will be evaluated as a classroom resource to teach quantum teleportation in a subsequent study.

Pushing, blocking and polynuclear growth

Abstract:
We consider a discrete-time model for random interface growth which admits exact formulas and converges to the Polynuclear growth model in a particular limit. We consider a discrete-time model for random interface growth which admits exact formulas and converges to the Polynuclear growth model in a particular limit. The height of the interface is initially flat and the evolution involves the addition of islands of height one according to a Poisson point process of nucleation events. The boundaries of these islands then spread in a stochastic manner, rather than at deterministic speed as in the Polynuclear growth model. The one-point distribution and multi-time distributions agree with point-to-line last passage percolation times in a geometric environment. An alternative interpretation for the growth model can be given through interacting particle systems experiencing pushing and blocking interactions.

Abstract:
We study a $d$-dimensional random walk with exponentially distributed increments conditioned so that the components stay ordered (in the sense of Doob). We find explicitly a positive harmonic function $h$ for the killed process and then construct an ordered process using Doob's $h$-transform. We study a $d$-dimensional random walk with exponentially distributed increments conditioned so that the components stay ordered (in the sense of Doob). We find explicitly a positive harmonic function $h$ for the killed process and then construct an ordered process using Doob's $h$-transform. Since these random walks are not nearest-neighbour, the harmonic function is not the Vandermonde determinant. The ordered process is related to the departure process of M/M/1 queues in tandem. We find asymptotics for the tail probabilities of the time until the components in exponential random walks become disordered and a local limit theorem. We find the distribution of the processes of smallest and largest particles as Fredholm determinants.

We study the real eigenvalue statistics of products of independent real Ginibre random matrices. These are matrices all of whose entries are real i.i.d. standard Gaussian random variables. For such product ensembles, we demonstrate the asymptotic normality of suitably normalised linear statistics of the real eigenvalues and compute the limiting variance explicitly in both global and mesoscopic regimes. A key part of our proof establishes uniform decorrelation estimates for the related Pfaffian point process, thereby allowing us to exploit weak dependence of the real eigenvalues to give simple and quick proofs of the central limit theorems under quite general conditions. We also establish the universality of these point processes. We compute the asymptotic limit of all correlation functions of the real eigenvalues in the bulk, origin and spectral edge regimes. By a suitable strengthening of the convergence at the edge, we also obtain the limiting fluctuations of the largest real eigenvalue. Near the origin we find new limiting distributions characterising the smallest positive real eigenvalue.

Motivated by the phenomenon of duality for interacting particle systems we introduce two classes of Pfaffian kernels describing a number of Pfaffian point processes in the `bulk' and at the `edge'. Using the probabilistic method due to Mark Kac, we prove two Szegő-type asymptotic expansion theorems for the corresponding Fredholm Pfaffians. The idea of the proof is to introduce an effective random walk with transition density determined by the Pfaffian kernel, express the logarithm of the Fredholm Pfaffian through expectations with respect to the random walk, and analyse the expectations using general results on random walks. We demonstrate the utility of the theorems by calculating asymptotics for the empty interval and non-crossing probabilities for a number of examples of Pfaffian point processes: coalescing/annihilating Brownian motions, massive coalescing Brownian motions, real zeros of Gaussian power series and Kac polynomials, and real eigenvalues for the real Ginibre ensemble.

It has been known since the pioneering paper of Mark Kac, that the asymptotics of Fredholm determinants can be studied using probabilistic methods. We demonstrate the efficacy of Kac' approach by studying the Fredholm Pfaffian describing the statistics of both non-Hermitian random matrices and annihilating Brownian motions. Namely, we establish the following two results. Firstly, let $\sqrt{N}+λ_{max}$ be the largest real eigenvalue of a random $N\times N$ matrix with independent $N(0,1)$ entries (the `real Ginibre matrix'). Consider the limiting $N\rightarrow \infty$ distribution $\mathbb{P}[λ_{max}<-L]$ of the shifted maximal real eigenvalue $λ_{max}$. Then \[ \lim_{L\rightarrow \infty} e^{\frac{1}{2\sqrt{2π}}ζ\left(\frac{3}{2}\right)L} \mathbb{P}\left(λ_{max}<-L\right) =e^{C_e}, \] where $ζ$ is the Riemann zeta-function and \[ C_e=\frac{1}{2}\log 2+\frac{1}{4π}\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{n} \left(-π+\sum_{m=1}^{n-1}\frac{1}{\sqrt{m(n-m)}}\right). \] Secondly, let $X_t^{(max)}$ be the position of the rightmost particle at time $t$ for a system of annihilating Brownian motions (ABM's) started from every point of $\mathbb{R}_{-}$. Then \[ \lim_{L\rightarrow \infty} e^{\frac{1}{2\sqrt{2π}}ζ\left(\frac{3}{2}\right)L} \mathbb{P}\left(\frac{X_{t}^{(max)}}{\sqrt{4t}}<-L\right) =e^{C_e}. \] These statements are a sharp counterpart of our previous results improved by computing the terms of order $L^{0}$ in the asymptotic expansion of the corresponding Fredholm Pfaffian.

This paper proves an equality in law between the invariant measure of a reflected system of Brownian motions and a vector of point-to-line last passage percolation times in a discrete random environment. A consequence describes the distribution of the all-time supremum of Dyson Brownian motion with drift. A finite temperature version relates the point-to-line partition functions of two directed polymers, with an inverse-gamma and a Brownian environment, and generalises Dufresne's identity. Our proof introduces an interacting system of Brownian motions with an invariant measure given by a field of point-to-line log partition functions for the log-gamma polymer.
