Hydrodynamical and radiative modeling of temporal Hα emission V/R variations caused by a discontinuous mass transfer in binaries
Abstract: Hα emission V/R variations caused by a discontinous mass transfer in interacting binaries with a rapidly rotating accreting star are modelled qualititatively for the first time. The program ZEUS-MP was used for a non-linear 3-D hydrodynamical modeling of a development of a blob of gaseous material injected into an orbit around a star. It resulted in the formation of an elongated disk with a slow p… ▽ More

Flat galaxies with dark matter halos - existence and stability
Abstract: We consider a model for a flat, disk-like galaxy surrounded by a halo of dark matter, namely a Vlasov-Poisson type system with two particle species, the stars which are restricted to the galactic plane and the dark matter particles. These constituents interact only through the gravitational potential which stars and dark matter create collectively. Using a variational approach we prove the exist… ▽ More

Stability of disk-like galaxies--Part I: Stability via reduction
Abstract: We prove the existence and stability of flat steady states of the Vlasov-Poisson system, which in astrophysics are used as models of disk-like galaxies. We follow the variational approach developed by Guo and Rein for this type of problems and extend previous results of Rein. In particular, we employ a reduction procedure which relates the stability problem for the Vlasov-Poisson system to the a… ▽ More
