The generic 1-bond:2-mode percolation type Raman signal inherent to the short bond of common (A,B)C semiconductor mixed crystals with zincblende (cubic) structure is exploited as a sensitive mesoscope to explore how various ZnSe-based systems engage their pressure-induced structural transition (to rock-salt) at the sub-macroscopic scale with a focus on ZnCdSe. The Raman doublet, that distinguishes between the AC- and BC-like environments of the short bond, is reactive to pressure: either it closes (ZnBeSe, ZnSeS) or it opens (ZnCdSe), depending on the hardening rates of the two environments under pressure. A partition of II-VI and III-V mixed crystals is accordingly outlined. Of special interest is the closure case, in which the system resonantly stabilizes ante transition at its exceptional point corresponding to a virtual decoupling, by overdam**, of the two oscillators forming the Raman doublet. At this limit, the chain-connected bonds of the short species (taken as the minor one) freeze along the chain into a rigid backbone. This reveals a capacity behind alloying to reduce the thermal conductivity.

The Raman selection rules of the (ZnSe, BeSe) mixed phonon polariton created by alloying in the three mode (1ZnSe, 2BeSe) ZnBeSe system, whose dramatic S like dispersion covers the large frequency gap between the ZnSe and BeSe spectral ranges, is studied in its wave vector dependence by near forward scattering. Both the collapse regime away from the Brillouin zone centre and the reinforcement regime near the Brillouin zone centre are addressed, using appropriate laser lines and Be contents. We find that in both regimes the considered phonon polariton, in fact a transverse mode with mixed mechanical and electrical character, obeys the same nominal Raman selection rules as its purely mechanical variant commonly observed in the backscattering geometry. Besides, marked differences in the phonon polariton Raman lineshapes in the two regimes give a hint about how the phonon polariton electrical field E develops while descending the S like dispersion towards the Brillouin zone centre. In the reinforcement regime E is large, leading to intramode on top of intermode transfers of oscillator strength mediated by E between the two BeSe modes, that both exhibit a fine structure on account of the alloy disorder. In contrast, in the collapse regime E remains weak, as testified by the absence of intramode transfer. The discussion is supported by contour modeling of the multi phonon polariton Raman lineshapes in their wave vector dependence within the linear dielectric approach.

Near-forward Raman scattering combined with ab initio phonon and bond length calculations is used to study the phonon-polariton transverse optical modes (with mixed electrical and mechanical character) of the II-VI ZnSeS mixed crystal under pressure. The goal of the study is to determine the pressure dependence of the poorly resolved percolation-type Zn-S Raman doublet of the three oscillator [1(Zn-Se),2(Zn-S)] ZnSe68S32 mixed crystal, which exhibits a phase transition at approximately the same pressure as its two end compounds (~14 GPa, zincblende-to-rocksalt), as determined by high-pressure x-ray diffraction. We find that the intensity of the lower Zn-S sub-mode of ZnSe68S32, due to Zn-S bonds vibrating in their own (S-like) environment, decreases under pressure (Raman scattering), whereas its frequency progressively converges onto that of the upper Zn- S sub-mode, due to Zn-S vibrations in the foreign (Se-like) environment (ab initio calculations). Ultimately, only the latter sub-mode survives. A similar phonon freezing was earlier evidenced with the well-resolved percolation-type Be-Se doublet of ZnBeSe [Pradhan et al. Phys. Rev. B 81, 115207 (2010)], that exhibits a large contrast in the pressure-induced structural transitions of its end compounds. We deduce that the above collapse and convergence process is intrinsic to the percolation doublet of a short bond under pressure, at least in a ZnSe-based mixed crystal, and not due to any pressure-induced structural transition.

We investigate by near-forward Raman scattering a presumed reinforcement of the (A-C,B-C)-mixed phonon-polariton of a A1-xBxC zincblende alloy when entering its longitudinal optical (LO-)regime near the Brillouin zone centre Γ, as predicted within the formalism of the linear dielectric response. A choice system to address such issue is ZnSe0.68S0.32 due to the moderate dispersion of its refractive index in the visible range, a sine qua non condition to bring the phonon-polariton insight near Γ. The LO-regime is actually accessed by using the 633.0 nm laser excitation, testified by the strong emergence of the (Zn-Se,Zn-S)-mixed phonon-polariton at ultimately small scattering angles.

The short (Be-Se) bond exhibits a distinct percolation doublet in the conventional backscattering Raman spectra, corresponding to a three-mode behavior in total [1(Zn-Se),2(Be-Se)] for Zn0.67Be0.33Se. This offers an opportunity to achieve a refined understanding of the phonon-polariton modes of a zincblende alloy beyond the current two-mode approximation, corresponding to a [1(Zn-Se),1(Be-Se)] description in the present case. The discussion is supported by contour modeling of the Raman signals of the multi-mode bulk and surface phonon-polaritons within the formalism of the linear dielectric response.

We focus on (Zn,Be)Se and show by Raman scattering that the original Be-Se doublet at ambient pressure, of the stretching-bending type, turns into a pure-bending singlet at the approach of the high-pressure ZnSe-like rocksalt phase, an unnatural one for the Be-Se bonds. The freezing of the Be-Se stretching mode is discussed within the scope of the percolation model (mesoscopic scale), with ab initio calculations in support (microscopic scale).

The recent finding of a 1-bond->2-phonon `percolation'-type behaviour in several random zincblende alloys, supporting an unsuspected 1-bond->2-mode behaviour in the bond length distribution, renews interest for a discussion of CuPt-type spontaneous ordering (CPSO) as a purely intrinsic effect. We investigate this key issue from both experimental (Raman scattering) and theoretical (first-principles bond length and phonon calculations) sides, focusing on Zn[1-x]Be[x]Se (0<x=0.92). Its large contrast in cation-anion bond lengths should stimulate CPSO to some extent, and is at the origin of a uniquely well-resolved 1-bond->2-phonon behaviour for the Be-Se species. Based on percolation, CPSO finds a previously missing natural explanation, at the mesosocopic scale. Also, the transfer of oscillator strength from the high- to the low-frequency Be-Se mode in the Raman spectra potentially emerges as a sensitive probe of CPSO in ZnBeSe. First-principles calculations indicate that the transfer is completed for the value of the long range order parameter of eta~0.5 in ZnBeSe2 (x~0.5), corresponding to a pure 1-bond->1-mode behaviour. With further ordering the alloy is forced to re-adopt a non-rewarding 1-bond->2-mode behaviour, due to the formation of ZnSe/BeSe micro-domains in the crystal. Therefore eta~0.5 appears as an intrinsic limit to CPSO in ZnBeSe2, and possibly in stoichiometric alloys in general.
