Innovative design and construction technique for the Cylindrical GEM detector for the BESIII experiment

The state of the art in the GEM production allow to create very large area GEM foils (up to 50x100 cm2) and thanks to the small thickness of these foil is it possible to shape it to the desired form: a Cylindrical Gas Electron Multiplier (CGEM) is then proposed. The innovative construction technique based on Rohacell, a PMI foam, will give solidity to cathode and anode with a very low impact on material budget. The entire detector is sustained by permaglass rings glued at the edges. These rings are use to assembly the CGEM together with a dedicated Vertical Insertion System and moreover there is placed the On-Detector electronic. The anode has been improved w.r.t. the state of the art through a jagged readout that minimize the inter-strip capacitance. The mechanical challenge of this detector requires a precision of the entire geometry within few hundreds of microns in the whole area. In this presentation will be presented an overview of the construction technique and the validation of this technique through the realization of a CGEM and its first tests. Since many years, a new concept of detectors, the Micro Pattern Gas Detectors, allows to overcome many of the problems of other types of commonly used detectors, as drift chambers and microstrips, reducing the discharge rate and increasing the radiation tolerance. Among these, one of the most commonly used is the Gas Elec… ▽ More Gas detectors are one of the pillars of the research in fundamental physics. Since many years, a new concept of detectors, the Micro Pattern Gas Detectors, allows to overcome many of the problems of other types of commonly used detectors, as drift chambers and microstrips, reducing the discharge rate and increasing the radiation tolerance. Among these, one of the most commonly used is the Gas Electron Multiplier. Commonly deployed as fast timing detectors and triggers, due to their fast response, high rate capability and high radiation hardness, they can also be used as trackers. The center of gravity readout technique allows to overcome the limit of the digital pads, whose spatial resolution is constrained by the pitch size. The presence of a high external magnetic field can distort the electronic cloud and affect the spatial resolution. The micro-TPC reconstruction method allows to reconstruct the three dimensional particle position as in a traditional Time Projection Chamber, but within a drift gap of a few millimeters. This method brings these detectors into a new perspective for what concerns the spatial resolution in strong magnetic field. In this report, the basis of this new technique will be shown and it will be compared to the traditional center of gravity. The results of a series of test beam performed with 10 x 10 cm2 planar prototypes in magnetic field will also be presented. This is one of the first implementations of this technique for GEM detectors in magnetic field and allows to reach unprecedented performance for gas detectors, up to a limit of 120 micron at 1T, one of the world's best results for MPGDs in strong magnetic field. The micro-TPC reconstruction has been recently tested at very high rates in a test beam at the MAMI facility; preliminary results of the test will be presented. △ Less

Abstract: A cylindrical GEM tracker is under construction in order to replace and improve the inner tracking system of the BESIII experiment. Tests with planar chamber prototypes were carried out on the H4 beam line of SPS (CERN) with muons of 150 GeV/c momentum, to evaluate the efficiency and resolution under different working conditions. The obtained efficiency was in the 96 - 98% range. With the former, resolutions <100 micron and <200 micron were achieved without and with magnetic field, respectively. The micro-TPC improved these results. By the end of 2016, the first cylindrical prototype was tested on the same beam line. It showed optimal stability under different settings. The comparison of its performance with respect to the planar chambers is ongoing. Here, the results of the planar prototype tests will be addressed. △ Less

It consists of three layers of cylindrically-shaped triple GEMs, with important innovations with respect to the existing GEM detectors, in order to achieve the best performance with the lowest material budget. It will be the first cylindrical GEM running with analog readout inside a 1T magnetic field. The simultaneous measurement of both the deposited charge and the signal time will permit to use a combination of two algorithms to evaluate the spatial position of the charged tracks inside the CGEM-IT: the charge centroid and the micro time projection chamber modes. They are complementary and can cope with the asymmetry of the electron avalanche when running in magnetic field and with non-orthogonal incident tracks. To evaluate the behavior under different working settings, both planar chambers and the first cylindrical prototype have been tested during various test beams at CERN with 150 GeV/c muons and pions. Measurement of e+e- --> D Dbar Cross Sections at the psi(3770) Resonance

Our data sample consists of an integrated luminosity of 2.93/fb of e+e- annihilation data produced by the BEPCII collider and collected and analyzed with the BESIII detector. We exclusively reconstruct three D0 and six D+ hadronic decay modes and use the ratio of the yield of full… ▽ More We report new measurements of the cross sections for the production of D Dbar final states at the psi(3770) resonance. Our data sample consists of an integrated luminosity of 2.93/fb of e+e- annihilation data produced by the BEPCII collider and collected and analyzed with the BESIII detector. We exclusively reconstruct three D0 and six D+ hadronic decay modes and use the ratio of the yield of fully reconstructed D Dbar events ("double tags") to the yield of all reconstructed D or Dbar mesons ("single tags") to determine the number of D0 D0bar and D+D- events, benefiting from the cancellation of many systematic uncertainties. Combining these yields with an independent determination of the integrated luminosity of the data sample, we find the cross sections to be σ(e+e- --> D0 D0bar)=(3.615 +- 0.010 +- 0.038) nb and σ(e+e- --> D+D-)=(2.830 +- 0.011 +- 0.026) nb, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. △ Less

Measurement of the Integrated Luminosities of Cross-section Scan Data Samples Around the $ψ(3770)$ Mass Region

Abstract: To investigate the nature of the $ψ(3770)$ resonance and to measure the cross section for $e^+e^- \to D\bar{D}$, a cross-section scan data sample, distributed among 41 center-of-mass energy points from 3.73 to 3.89~GeV, was taken with the BESIII detector operated at the BEPCII collider in the year 2010. Observation of the Semileptonic Decay $D^0 \to a_0(980)^- e^+ ν_e$ and Evidence for $D^+ \to a_0(980)^0 e^+ ν_e$

Abstract: Using an $e^+e^-$ collision data sample of 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV by the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we report the observation of $D^0 \to a_0(980)^- e^+ ν_e$ and evidence for $D^+ \to a_0(980)^0 e^+ ν_e~$ with significances of $6.4σ$ and $2.9σ$, respectively. Abstract: We observe the decay $ψ(3686) \to n \bar{n}$ for the first time and measure $ψ(3686) \to p \bar{p}$ with improved accuracy by using $1.07\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector. The branching fractions of $D^0\to π^-μ^+ν_μ$ and $D^+\to π^0μ^+ν_μ$ are measured to be $(0.272 \pm 0.008_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.006_{\rm syst.})\%$ and $(0.350 \pm 0.011_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.010_{\rm syst.})\%$, respectively, where the former is of much improved precision compared to previous results and the latter is determined for the first time. Using these results along with previous BESIII measurements of $D^{0(+)}\to π^{-(0)}e^+ν_e$, we calculate the branching fraction ratios to be ${\mathcal R}^0\equiv {\mathcal B}_{D^{0}\to π^{-}μ^+ν_μ}/{\mathcal B}_{D^{0}\to π^{-}e^+ν_e}=0.922\pm 0.030_{\rm stat.}\pm0.022_{\rm syst.}$ and ${\mathcal R}^+\equiv {\mathcal B}_{D^{+}\to π^{0}μ^+ν_μ}/{\mathcal B}_{D^{+}\to π^{0}e^+ν_e}=0.964\pm 0.037_{\rm stat.}\pm0.026_{\rm syst.}$, which are compatible with the theoretical expectation of lepton flavor universality within $1.7σ$ and $0.5σ$, respectively. We also examine the branching fraction ratios in different four-momentum transfer square regions, and find no significant deviations from the standard model predictions. △ Less

Search for $h_{c}\rightarrowπ^+π^-J/ψ$ via $ψ(3686)\rightarrow π^0π^+π^-J/ψ$

Abstract: Using a data sample of $448.1\times10^6$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII, we perform search for the hadronic transition $h_c\rightarrowπ^+π^-J/ψ$ via $ψ(3686)\rightarrowπ^0h_c$. Study of $η(1475)$ and $X(1835)$ in radiative $J/ψ$ decays to $γφ$

Abstract: The decay $J/ψ\rightarrow γγφ$ is studied using a sample of $1.31 \times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. Two structures around 1475 MeV/c$^2$ and 1835 MeV/c$^2$ are observed in the $γφ$ invariant mass spectrum for the first time. With a fit on the $γφ$ invariant mass, which takes into account the interference between the two structures, and a simple analysis of the angular… ▽ More The decay $J/ψ\rightarrow γγφ$ is studied using a sample of $1.31 \times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected with the BESIII detector. Observation of $e^{+}e^{-} \to φχ_{c1}$ and $φχ_{c2}$ at $\sqrt{s}$=4.600 GeV

Abstract: Using a data sample collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=4.600$ GeV, we search for the production of $e^{+}e^{-} \to φχ_{c0,1,2}$ and the charmonium-like state $Y(4140)$ in the radiative transition $e^{+}e^{-} \to γY(4140)$ with $Y(4140)$ subsequently decaying into $φJ/ψ$. Abstract: The process $e^+ e^- \to D_{s}^{*+} D_{s0}^{*-}(2317)+c.c.$ is observed for the first time with the data sample of 567~pb$^{-1}$ collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 4.6$~GeV. Superrigidity of actions on finite rank median spaces

Abstract: Finite rank median spaces are a simultaneous generalisation of finite dimensional ${\rm CAT}(0)$ cube complexes and real trees. If $Γ$ is an irreducible lattice in a product of rank one simple Lie groups, we show that every action of $Γ$ on a complete, finite rank median space has a global fixed point. This is in sharp contrast with the behaviour of actions on infinite rank median spaces. The fi… ▽ More Finite rank median spaces are a simultaneous generalisation of finite dimensional ${\rm CAT}(0)$ cube complexes and real trees. If $Γ$ is an irreducible lattice in a product of rank one simple Lie groups, we show that every action of $Γ$ on a complete, finite rank median space has a global fixed point. This is in sharp contrast with the behaviour of actions on infinite rank median spaces. The fixed point property is obtained as corollary to a superrigidity result; the latter holds for irreducible lattices in arbitrary products of compactly generated groups. In previous work, we introduced "Roller compactifications" of median spaces; these generalise a well-known construction in the case of cube complexes. We provide a reduced $1$-cohomology class that detects group actions with a finite orbit in the Roller compactification. Even for ${\rm CAT}(0)$ cube complexes, only second bounded cohomology classes were known with this property, due to Chatterji-Fernós-Iozzi. As a corollary, we observe that, in Gromov's density model, random groups at low density do not have Shalom's property $H_{FD}$. △ Less

Abstract: The Born cross section of the $e^{+}e^{-}~\rightarrow~Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ process is measured with unprecedented precision using data collected with the BESIII detector at $\sqrt{s}=4574.5$, $45580.0$, $4590.0$ and $4599.5$ $\mathrm{MeV}$. The non-zero cross section near the $Λ_{c}^{+} \barΛ_{c}^{-}$ production threshold is discerned. From these, the ratio between the $Λ_{c}$ electric and magnetic form factors ($|G_{E}/G_{M}|$) is measured for the first time. The decay branching fractions of $χ_{c0,c2} \to γγ$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c0}\toγγ) = (1.93 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.05)\times 10^{-4}$ and $\mathcal{B}(χ_{c2}\toγγ) = (3.10 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-4} $, which correspond to two-photon decay widths of $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0}) = 2.03 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.13 ~\rm{keV}$ and $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = 0.60 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.04 ~\rm{keV}$ with a ratio of $\mathcal{R}=Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c0})= 0.295 \pm 0.014 \pm 0.007 \pm 0.027$, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and associated with the uncertainties of $\mathcal{B}(ψ(3686)\toγχ_{c0,c2})$ and the total widths $Γ(χ_{c0,c2})$, respectively. For the forbidden decay of $χ_{c1}\toγγ$, no signal is observed, and an upper limit on the two-photon width is obtained to be $Γ_{γγ}(χ_{c1})<5.3 ~\rm{eV}$ at the 90\% confidence level. The ratio of the two-photon widths between helicity-zero and helicity-two components in the decay $χ_{c2}\toγγ$ is also measured to be $f_{0/2} = Γ^{λ=0}_{γγ}(χ_{c2})/Γ^{λ=2}_{γγ}(χ_{c2}) = (0.0 \pm 0.6 \pm 1.2)\times 10^{-2}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. △ Less

Observation of $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies above 3.7$\sim$GeV

Abstract: The state $Y(2175)$ is observed in the process $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 4.6$\sim$GeV with a statistical significance larger than $10σ$ using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. This is the first observation of the $Y(2175)$ in this process. The mass and width of the $Y(2175)$ are determined to be ($2135\pm 8\pm 9$)~… ▽ More The state $Y(2175)$ is observed in the process $e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175)$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.7 and 4.6$\sim$GeV with a statistical significance larger than $10σ$ using data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. No significant signal for the process $e^+ e^- \to η' Y(2175)$ is observed and the upper limit on $σ(e^+ e^- \to η' Y(2175))/σ(e^+ e^- \to ηY(2175))$ is estimated to be 0.43 at the 90\% confidence level. We also search for $ψ(3686) \to ηY(2175)$. No significant signal is observed, indicating a strong suppression relative to the corresponding $J/ψ$ decay, in violation of the "12\% rule." △ Less

The dominant contribution is found to be $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $ρη^\prime$. In the $J/ψ$ decay, the branching frac… ▽ More Using the data samples of $1.31\times 10^9$ $J/ψ$ events and $4.48\times 10^8$ $ψ(3686)$ events collected with the BESIII detector, partial wave analyses on the decays $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686) \to π^+π^-η^\prime$ are performed with a relativistic covariant tensor amplitude approach. The dominant contribution is found to be $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $ρη^\prime$. In the $J/ψ$ decay, the branching fraction ${\cal B}(J/ψ\to ρη^\prime)$ is determined to be $(7.90\pm0.19(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.49(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$. Two solutions are found in the $ψ(3686)$ decay, and the corresponding branching fraction ${\cal B}(ψ(3686)\to ρη^\prime)$ is $(1.02\pm0.11(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.24(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$ for the case of constructive interference, and $(5.69\pm1.28(\mathrm{stat})\pm2.36(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-6}$ for destructive interference. As a consequence, the ratios of branching fractions between $ψ(3686)$ and $J/ψ$ decays to $ρη^\prime$ are calculated to be $(12.9\pm1.4(\mathrm{stat})\pm3.1(\mathrm{sys}))$\% and $(7.2\pm1.6(\mathrm{stat})\pm3.0(\mathrm{sys}))$\%, respectively. We also determine the inclusive branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(3686)$ decays to $π^+π^-η^\prime$ to be $(1.36\pm0.02(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.08(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-4}$ and $(1.51\pm0.14(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.23(\mathrm{sys}))\times 10^{-5}$, respectively. △ Less

Abstract: We prove a version of the Tits alternative for groups acting on complete, finite rank median spaces. This shows that group actions on finite rank median spaces are much more restricted than actions on general median spaces. Along the way, we extend to median spaces the Caprace-Sageev machinery and part of Hagen's theory of unidirectional boundary sets. Abstract: Performance of triple GEM prototypes has been evaluated by means of a muon beam at the H4 line of the SPS test area at CERN. The data from two planar prototypes have been reconstructed and analyzed offline with two clusterization methods: the enter of gravity of the charge distribution and the micro Time Projection Chamber (\muTPC). Concerning the spatial resolution, the charge centroid cluster reconstruction performs extremely well with no magnetic field: the resolution is well below 100 \mum . Increasing the magnetic field intensity, the resolution degrades almost linearly as effect of the Lorentz force that displaces, broadens and asymmetrizes the electron avalanche. Tuning the electric fields of the GEM prototype we could achieve the unprecedented spatial resolution of 190 \mum at 1 Tesla. In order to boost the spatial resolution with strong magnetic field and inclined tracks a \muTPC cluster reconstruction has been investigated. Such a readout mode exploits the good time resolution of the GEM detector and electronics to reconstruct the trajectory of the particle inside the conversion gap. Beside the improvement of the spatial resolution, information on the track angle can be also extracted. The new clustering algorithm has been tested with diagonal tracks with no magnetic field showing a resolution between 100 um and 150 um for the incident angle ranging from 10° to 45° . Studies show similar performance with 1 Tesla magnetic field. This is the first use of a \muTPC readout with a triple GEM detector in magnetic field. This study has shown that a combined readout is capable to guarantee stable performance over a broad spectrum of particle momenta and incident angles, up to a 1 Tesla magnetic field. △ Less

Determination of spin and parity of the $Z_c(3900)$

It will consist of three layers of cylindrically-shaped triple GEMs surrounding the interaction point. The experiment is taking data at the e+e- collider BEPCII in Bei**g (China) and the GEM tracker will be installed in 2018. Tests on the performances of triple GEMs in strong magnetic field have been run by means of the muon beam available in the H4 line of SPS (CERN) with both planar chambers and the first cylindrical prototype. Efficiencies and resolutions have been evaluated using different gains, gas mixtures, with and without magnetic field. The obtained efficiency is 97-98% on single coordinate view, in many operational arrangements. The spatial resolution for planar GEMs has been evaluated with two different algorithms for the position determination: the charge centroid and the micro time projection chamber (mu-TPC) methods. The two modes are complementary and are able to cope with the asymmetry of the electron avalanche when running in magnetic field, and with non-orthogonal incident tracks. With the charge centroid, a resolution lower than 100 micron has been reached without magnetic field and lower than 200 micron with a magnetic field up to 1 T. The mu-TPC mode showed to be able to improve those results. In the first beam test with the cylindrical prototype, the detector had a very good stability under different voltage configurations and particle intensities. The analogue readout of the CGEM enables the use of a charge centroid algorithm to improve the spatial resolution to better than 130 um while loosening the pitch strip to 650 um, which allows to… ▽ More For the upgrade of the inner tracker of the BESIII spectrometer, planned for 2018, a lightweight tracker based on an innovative Cylindrical Gas Electron Multiplier (CGEM) detector is now under development. The analogue readout of the CGEM enables the use of a charge centroid algorithm to improve the spatial resolution to better than 130 um while loosening the pitch strip to 650 um, which allows to reduce the total number of channels to about 10 000. The channels are readout by 160 dedicated integrated 64-channel front-end ASICs, providing a time and charge measurement and featuring a fully-digital output. The energy measurement is extracted either from the time-over-threshold (ToT) or the 10-bit digitisation of the peak amplitude of the signal. The time of the event is generated by quad-buffered low-power TDCs, allowing for rates in excess of 60 kHz per channel. The TDCs are based on analogue interpolation techniques and produce a time stamp (or two, if working in ToT mode) of the event with a time resolution better than 50 ps. The front-end noise, based on a CSA and CR-RC2 shapers, dominate the channel intrinsic time jitter, which is less than 5 ns r.m.s.. The time information of the hit can be used to reconstruct the track path, operating the detector as a small TPC and hence improving the position resolution when the distribution of the cloud, due to large incident angle or magnetic field, is very broad. Event data is collected by an off-detector motherboard, where each GEM-ROC readout card handles 4 ASIC carrier PCBs (512 channels). Configuration upload and data readout between the off-detector electronics and the VME-based data collector cards are managed by bi-directional fibre optical links. △ Less
