Using the entire BaBar $Υ(4S)$ data set, the first two-dimensional unbinned angular analysis of the semileptonic decay $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineν_\ell$ is performed, employing hadronic reconstruction of the tag-side $B$ meson from $Υ(4S)\to B\overline{B}$. Here, $\ell$ denotes the light charged leptons $e$ and $μ$. A novel data-driven signal-background separation procedure with minimal dependence on simulation is developed. This procedure preserves all multi-dimensional correlations present in the data. The expected $\sin^2θ_\ell$ dependence of the differential decay rate in the Standard Model is demonstrated, where $θ_\ell$ is the lepton helicity angle. Including input from the latest lattice QCD calculations and previously available experimental data, the underlying form factors are extracted using both model-independent (BGL) and dependent (CLN) methods. Comparisons with lattice calculations show flavor SU(3) symmetry to be a good approximation in the $B_{(s)}\to D_{(s)}$ sector. Using the BGL results, the CKM matrix element $|V_{cb}|=(41.09\pm 1.16)\times 10^{-3}$ and the Standard Model prediction of the lepton-flavor universality violation variable $\mathcal{R}(D)=0.300\pm 0.004$, are extracted. The value of $|V_{cb}|$ from $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineν_\ell$ tends to be higher than that extracted using $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell^- \overlineν_\ell$. The Standard Model $\mathcal{R}(D)$ calculation is at a $1.97σ$ tension with the latest HFLAV experimental average.

Finding tunable van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets that operate at above room temperature is an important research focus in physics and materials science. Most vdW magnets are only intrinsically magnetic far below room temperature and magnetism with square-shaped hysteresis at room-temperature has yet to be observed. Here, we report magnetism in a quasi-2D magnet Cr1.2Te2 observed at room temperature (290 K). This magnetism was tuned via a protonic gate with an electron do** concentration up to 3.8 * 10^21 cm^-3. We observed non-monotonic evolutions in both coercivity and anomalous Hall resistivity. Under increased electron do**, the coercivities and anomalous Hall effects (AHEs) vanished, indicating a do**-induced magnetic phase transition. This occurred up to room temperature. DFT calculations showed the formation of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase caused by the intercalation of protons which induced significant electron do** in the Cr1.2Te2. The tunability of the magnetic properties and phase in room temperature magnetic vdW Cr1.2Te2 is a significant step towards practical spintronic devices.

The properties of the edge ion-scale turbulence are studied using the beam emission spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic on MAST. Evidence of the formation of large-scale high-amplitude coherent structures, filamentary density blobs and holes, 2$-$4 cm inside the plasma separatrix is presented. Measurements of radial velocity and skewness of the density fluctuations indicate that density holes propagate radially inwards, with the skewness profile peaking at 7$-$10 cm inside the separatrix. Poloidal velocities of the density fluctuations measured using cross-correlation time delay estimation (CCTDE) are found to exhibit an intermittent behaviour. Zonal-flow analysis reveals the presence of poloidally symmetric coherent oscillations $-$ low-frequency (LF) zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes (GAM). Shearing rates of the observed zonal flows are found to be comparable to the turbulence decorrelation rate. The observed bursts in density-fluctuation power are followed by quiescent periods with a transient increase in the power of sheared flows. Three-wave interactions between broadband turbulence and a GAM are illustrated using the autobispectral technique. It is shown that the zonal flows and the density-fluctuation field are nonlinearly coupled and LF zonal flows mediate the energy transfer from high- to low-frequency density fluctuations.

A new mechanism has been proposed to simultaneously explain the presence of dark matter and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe. This scenario predicts exotic $B$ meson decays into a baryon and a dark sector anti-baryon ($ψ_D$) with branching fractions accessible at $B$ factories. We present a search for $B \rightarrow Λψ_D$ decays using data collected by the $BABAR$ experiment at SLAC. This reaction is identified by fully reconstructing the accompanying $B$ meson and requiring the presence of a single $Λ$ baryon in the remaining particles. No significant signal is observed, and bounds on the $B \rightarrow Λψ_D$ branching fraction are derived in the range $0.13 - 5.2\times 10^{-5}$ for $1.0 < m_{ψ_D} < 4.2$ GeV/$c^{2}$. These results set strong constraints on the parameter space allowed by the theory.

In the studied 17,950 - 22,500 cm$^{-1}$ and 86,800 - 92,100 cm$^{-1}$ regions, 480 transitions have been measured. These new experimental data were combined with data from the C $\to$ A and B $\to$ A systems, previously analyzed in 13C17O. The frequencies of 1003 transitions derived from 12 bands were used to analyze the perturbations between the A$^1Π$ ($ν$ = 0 - 3) levels and rovibrational levels of the d$^3Δ_i$, e$^3Σ^-$, a$'{}^3Σ^+$, I$^1Σ^-$ and D$^1Δ$ states as well as to a preliminary investigation of weak irregularities that appear in the B$^1Σ^+$ ($ν$ = 0) level. Deperturbed molecular constants and term values of the A$^1Π$ state were obtained. The spin-orbit and L-uncoupling interaction parameters as well as isotopologue-independent spin-orbit and rotation-electronic perturbation parameters were derived.

The Heavy Photon Search (HPS) experiment is designed to search for a new vector boson $A^\prime$ in the mass range of 20 MeV/$c^2$ to 220 MeV/$c^2$ that kinetically mixes with the Standard Model photon with couplings $ε^2 >10^{-10}$. In addition to the general importance of exploring light, weakly coupled physics that is difficult to probe with high-energy colliders, a prime motivation for this search is the possibility that sub-GeV thermal relics constitute dark matter, a scenario that requires a new comparably light mediator, where models with a hidden $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, a "dark", "hidden sector", or "heavy" photon, are particularly attractive. HPS searches for visible signatures of these heavy photons, taking advantage of their small coupling to electric charge to produce them via a process analogous to bremsstrahlung in a fixed target and detect their subsequent decay to $\mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-$ pairs in a compact spectrometer. In addition to searching for $\mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-$ resonances atop large QED backgrounds, HPS has the ability to precisely measure decay lengths, resulting in unique sensitivity to dark photons, as well as other long-lived new physics. After completion of the experiment and operation of engineering runs in 2015 and 2016 at the JLab CEBAF, physics runs in 2019 and 2021 have provided datasets that are now being analyzed to search for dark photons and other new phenomena.

Despite the long history of spectroscopic studies of the C$_2$ molecule, fundamental questions about its chemical bonding are still being hotly debated. The complex electronic structure of C$_2$ is a consequence of its dense manifold of near-degenerate, low-lying electronic states. A global multi-state diabatic model is proposed here to disentangle the numerous configuration interactions within four symmetry manifolds of C$_2$ ($^{1}Π_g$, $^{3}Π_g$, $^{1}Σ_u^+$, and $^{3}Σ_u^+$). The key concept of our model is the existence of two "valence-hole" configurations, $2σ_g^22σ_u^11π_{u}^33σ_g^2$ for $^{1,3}Π_g$ states and $2σ_g^22σ_u^11π_{u}^43σ_g^1$ for $^{1,3}Σ_u^+$ states that derive from $3σ_g\leftarrow2σ_u$ electron promotion. The lowest-energy state from each of the four C$_2$ symmetry species is dominated by this type of valence-hole configuration at its equilibrium internuclear separation. As a result of their large binding energy (nominal bond order of 3) and correlation with the 2s$^2$2p$^2$+2s2p$^3$ separated-atom configurations, the presence of these valence-hole configurations has a profound impact on the $global$ electronic structure and unimolecular dynamics of C$_2$.

A study of initial-state gluon radiation (ISR) in hadron collisions is presented using Drell-Yan (DY) events produced in proton-antiproton collisions by the Tevatron collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. This paper adopts a novel approach which uses the mean value of the Z/$γ^*$ transverse momentum $<p_T^{DY}>$ in DY events as a powerful observable to characterize the effect of ISR. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the CDF Run II detector, $<p_T^{DY}>$ is measured as a function of the Z/$γ^*$ invariant mass. It is found that these two observables have a dependence, $<p_T^{DY}> = -8 + 2.2 \ln m_{DY}^2$ [GeV/c], where $m_{DY}$ is the value of the Z/$γ^*$ mass measured in units of GeV/$c^2$. This linear dependence is observed for the first time in this analysis. It may be exploited to model the effect of ISR and constrain its impact in other processes.

Modern epidemiological analyses to understand and combat the spread of disease depend critically on access to, and use of, data. Rapidly evolving data, such as data streams changing during a disease outbreak, are particularly challenging. Data management is further complicated by data being imprecisely identified when used. Public trust in policy decisions resulting from such analyses is easily damaged and is often low, with cynicism arising where claims of "following the science" are made without accompanying evidence. Tracing the provenance of such decisions back through open software to primary data would clarify this evidence, enhancing the transparency of the decision-making process. Here, we demonstrate a Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR) data pipeline developed during the COVID-19 pandemic that allows easy annotation of data as they are consumed by analyses, while tracing the provenance of scientific outputs back through the analytical source code to data sources. Such a tool provides a mechanism for the public, and fellow scientists, to better assess the trust that should be placed in scientific evidence, while allowing scientists to support policy-makers in openly justifying their decisions. We believe that tools such as this should be promoted for use across all areas of policy-facing research.

In high orbital angular momentum ($\ell \geq 3$) Rydberg states, the centrifugal barrier hinders close approach of the Rydberg electron to the ion-core. As a result, these core-nonpenetrating Rydberg states can be well described by a simplified model in which the Rydberg electron is only weakly perturbed by the long-range electric properties (i.e., multipole moments and polarizabilities) of the ion-core. We have used a long-range model to describe the vibrational autoionization dynamics of high-$\ell$ Rydberg states of nitric oxide (NO). In particular, our model explains the extensive angular momentum exchange between the ion-core and Rydberg electron that had been previously observed in vibrational autoionization of $f$ ($\ell=3$) Rydberg states. These results shed light on a long-standing mechanistic question around these previous observations, and support a direct, vibrational mechanism of autoionization over an indirect, predissociation-mediated mechanism. In addition, our model correctly predicts newly measured total decay rates of $g$ ($\ell=4$) Rydberg states because, for $\ell\geq4$, the non-radiative decay is dominated by autoionization rather than predissociation. We examine the predicted NO$^+$ ion rotational state distributions generated by vibrational autoionization of $g$ states and discuss applications of our model to achieve quantum state selection in the production of molecular ions.

At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, high-mass electron-neutrino ($eν$) pairs are produced predominantly in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow W(\rightarrow eν) + X$. The asymmetry of the electron and positron yield as a function of their pseudorapidity constrain the slope of the ratio of the $u$- to $d$-quark parton distributions versus the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the quarks. This paper reports on the measurement of the electron-charge asymmetry using the full data set recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in 2001--2011 and corresponding to 9.1~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The measurement significantly improves the precision of the Tevatron constraints on the parton-distribution functions of the proton. Numerical tables of the measurement are provided.

Chirality and chiral molecules are key elements in modern chemical and biochemical industries. Individual addressing, and the eventual separation of chiral enantiomers has been and still is an important elusive task in molecular physics and chemistry, and a variety of methods has been introduced over the years to achieve this goal. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that a pair of cross-polarized THz pulses interacting with chiral molecules through their permanent dipole moments induces an enantioselective orientation of these molecules. This orientation persists for a long time, exceeding the duration of the THz pulses by several orders of magnitude, and its dependency on temperature and pulses' parameters is investigated. The persistent orientation may enhance the deflection of the molecules in inhomogeneous electromagnetic fields, potentially leading to viable separation techniques.

We report on a detailed study of magnetic fluctuations in the JET pedestal, employing basic theoretical considerations, gyrokinetic simulations, and experimental fluctuation data, to establish the physical basis for their origin, role, and distinctive characteristics. We demonstrate quantitative agreement between gyrokinetic simulations of microtearing modes (MTMs) and two magnetic frequency bands with corresponding toroidal mode numbers n=4 and 8. Such disparate fluctuation scales, with substantial gaps between toroidal mode numbers, are commonly observed in pedestal fluctuations. Here we provide a clear explanation, namely the alignment of the relevant rational surfaces (and not others) with the peak in the omega star profile, which is localized in the steep gradient region of the pedestal. We demonstrate that a global treatment is required to capture this effect. Nonlinear simulations suggest that the MTM fluctuations produce experimentally-relevant transport levels and saturate by relaxing the background electron temperature gradient, slightly downshifting the fluctuation frequencies from the linear predictions. Scans in collisionality are compared with simple MTM dispersion relations. At the experimental points considered, MTM growth rates can either increase or decrease with collision frequency depending on the parameters thus defying any simple characterization of collisionality dependence.

The ratio is measured to be ${\cal R}_{τμ}^{Υ(3S)} = 0.966 \pm 0.008_\mathrm{stat} \pm 0.014_\mathrm{syst}$ and is in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.9948 within 2 standard deviations. The uncertainty in ${\cal R}_{τμ}^{Υ(3S)}$ is almost an order of magnitude smaller than the only previous measurement.

The saturated state of turbulence driven by the ion-temperature-gradient instability is investigated using a two-dimensional long-wavelength fluid model that describes the perturbed electrostatic potential and perturbed ion temperature in a magnetic field with constant curvature (a $Z$-pinch) and an equilibrium temperature gradient. Numerical simulations reveal a well-defined transition between a finite-amplitude saturated state dominated by strong zonal-flow and zonal-temperature perturbations, and a blow-up state that fails to saturate on a box-independent scale. We argue that this transition is equivalent to the Dimits transition from a low-transport to a high-transport state seen in gyrokinetic numerical simulations. A quasi-static staircase-like structure of the temperature gradient intertwined with zonal flows, which have patch-wise constant shear, emerges near the Dimits threshold. The turbulent heat flux in the low-collisionality near-marginal state is dominated by turbulent bursts, triggered by coherent long-lived structures closely resembling those found in gyrokinetic simulations with imposed equilibrium flow shear. The break up of the low-transport Dimits regime is linked to a competition between the two different sources of poloidal momentum in the system -- the Reynolds stress and the advection of the diamagnetic flow by the $\boldsymbol{E}\times\boldsymbol{B}$ flow. By analysing the linear ITG modes, we obtain a semi-analytic model for the Dimits threshold at large collisionality.

Because of their central importance in chemistry and biology, water molecules have been the subject of decades of intense spectroscopic investigations. Rotational spectroscopy of water vapor has yielded detailed information about the structure and dynamics of isolated water molecules as well as water dimers and clusters. Nonlinear rotational spectroscopy in the terahertz regime has been developed recently to investigate the rotational dynamics of linear and symmetric-top molecules whose rotational energy levels are regularly spaced, but it has not previously been applied to water or other lower-symmetry molecules with irregularly spaced levels. We report the use of recently developed two-dimensional terahertz rotational spectroscopy to observe high-order rotational coherences and correlations between rotational transitions that could not be observed previously. The results include two-quantum (2Q) peaks at frequencies that are shifted slightly from the sums of distinct rotational transitions on two molecules, which directly reveal the presence of previously unseen metastable water complexes with lifetimes of 100 ps or longer. Several such peaks observed at distinct 2Q frequencies indicate that the complexes have multiple preferred bimolecular geometries. Our results demonstrate sensitivity of rotational correlations measured in 2D THz spectroscopy to molecular interactions and complexation in the gas phase.

The absolute determination of branching fractions for these decays are significantly improved compared to previous BaBaR measurements. Evidence is found for the decay $B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+$ at the $3σ$ level. The absolute branching fraction ${\cal B}(B^+\rightarrow X(3872)K^+) = (2.1\pm0.6({\rm stat})\pm0.3({\rm syst}))\times 10^{-4}$ is measured for the first time. It follows that ${\cal B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψπ^+π^-)=(4.1\pm1.3)\%$, supporting the hypothesis of a molecular component for this resonance.

The cortex learns to make associations between stimuli and spiking activity which supports behaviour. It does this by adjusting synaptic weights. The complexity of these transformations implies that synapses have to change without access to the full error information, a problem typically referred to as "credit-assignment". However, it remains unknown how the cortex solves this problem. We propose that a combination of plasticity rules, 1) Hebbian, 2) acetylcholine-dependent and 3) noradrenaline-dependent excitatory plasticity, together with 4) inhibitory plasticity restoring E/I balance, effectively solves the credit assignment problem. We derive conditions under-which a neuron model can learn a number of associations approaching its theoretical capacity. We confirm our predictions regarding acetylcholine-dependent and inhibitory plasticity by reanalysing experimental data. Our work suggests that detailed cortical E/I balance reduces the dimensionality of the problem of associating inputs with outputs, thereby allowing imperfect "supervision" by neuromodulatory systems to guide learning effectively.

Signal $B^- \to Λ{\overline p} ν{\overlineν}$ candidates are identified by first fully reconstructing a $B^+$ decay in one of many possible exclusive decays to hadronic final states, then examining detector activity that is not associated with this reconstructed $B^+$ decay for evidence of a signal $B^- \to Λ{\overline p} ν{\overlineν}$ decay. The data yield is found to be consistent with the expected background contribution under a null signal hypothesis, resulting in an upper limit of ${{\cal B} (B^- \to Λ{\overline p} ν{\overlineν}) < 3.0\times 10^{-5}}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level.

STIRAP (Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage) is a powerful laser-based method, usually involving two photons, for efficient and selective transfer of population between quantum states. A particularly interesting feature is the fact that the coupling between the initial and the final quantum states is via an intermediate state even though the lifetime of the latter can be much shorter than the interaction time with the laser radiation. Nevertheless, spontaneous emission from the intermediate state is prevented by quantum interference. Maintaining the coherence between the initial and final state throughout the transfer process is crucial. STIRAP was initially developed with applications in chemical dynamics in mind. That is why the original paper of 1990 was published in The Journal of Chemical Physics. However, as of about the year 2000, the unique capabilities of STIRAP and its robustness with respect to small variations of some experimental parameters stimulated many researchers to apply the scheme in a variety of other fields of physics. The successes of these efforts are documented in this collection of articles.

Van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic materials are rapidly establishing themselves as effective building blocks for next generation spintronic devices. When layered with non-magnetic vdW materials, such as graphene and/or topological insulators, vdW heterostructures can be assembled (with no requirement for lattice matching) to provide otherwise unattainable device structures and functionalities. We report a hitherto rarely seen antisymmetric magnetoresistance (MR) effect in van der Waals heterostructured Fe3GeTe2/graphite/Fe3GeTe2 devices. Unlike conventional giant magnetoresistance (GMR) which is characterized by two resistance states, the MR in these vdW heterostructures features distinct high, intermediate and low resistance states. This unique characteristic is suggestive of underlying physical mechanisms that differ from those observed before. After theoretical calculations, the three resistance behavior was attributed to a spin momentum locking induced spin polarized current at the graphite/FGT interface. Our work reveals that ferromagnetic heterostructures assembled from vdW materials can exhibit substantially different properties to those exhibited by similar heterostructures grown in vacuum. Hence, it highlights the potential for new physics and new spintronic applications to be discovered using vdW heterostructures.

This paper compares the gyrokinetic instabilities and transport in two representative JET pedestals, one (pulse 78697) from the JET configuration with a carbon wall (C) and another (pulse 92432) from after the installation of JET's ITER-like Wall (ILW). The discharges were selected for a comparison of JET-ILW and JET-C discharges with good confinement at high current (3 MA, corresponding also to low $ρ_*$) and retain the distinguishing features of JET-C and JET-ILW, notably, decreased pedestal top temperature for JET-ILW. A comparison of the profiles and heating power reveals a stark qualitative difference between the discharges: the JET-ILW pulse (92432) requires twice the heating power, at a gas rate of $1.9 \times 10^{22}e/s$, to sustain roughly half the temperature gradient of the JET-C pulse (78697), operated at zero gas rate. This points to heat transport as a central component of the dynamics limiting the JET-ILW pedestal and reinforces the following emerging JET-ILW pedestal transport paradigm, which is proposed for further examination by both theory and experiment. ILW conditions modify the density pedestal in ways that decrease the normalized pedestal density gradient $a/L_n$, often via an outward shift of the density pedestal. This is attributable to some combination of direct metal wall effects and the need for increased fueling to mitigate tungsten contamination. The modification to the density profile increases $η= L_n/L_T$ , thereby producing more robust ion temperature gradient (ITG) and electron temperature gradient driven instability. The decreased pedestal gradients for JET-ILW (92432) also result in a strongly reduced $E \times B$ shear rate, further enhancing the ion scale turbulence. Collectively, these effects limit the pedestal temperature and demand more heating power to achieve good pedestal performance.

We report on a search for a spin-zero non-standard-model particle in proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at a center-of-mass-energy of 1.96 TeV. This particle, the $φ$ boson, is expected to decay into a bottom-antibottom quark pair and to be produced in association with at least one bottom quark. The data sample consists of events with three jets identified as initiated by bottom quarks and corresponds to $5.4~\text{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. In each event, the invariant mass of the two most energetic jets is studied by looking for deviations from the multijet background, which is modeled using data. No evidence is found for such particle. Exclusion upper limits ranging from 20 to 2 pb are set for the product of production cross sections times branching fraction for hypothetical $φ$ boson with mass between 100 and 300 GeV/$c^2$. These are the most stringent constraints to date.

The measurement requires creating molecular ions in the eEDM sensitive state, the rovibronic ground state $^3Δ_1$, $v^+=0$, $J^+=1$. Survey spectroscopy of neutral ThF is required to identify an appropriate intermediate state for a Resonance Enhanced Multi-Photon Ionization (REMPI) scheme that will create ions in the required state. We perform broadband survey spectroscopy (from 13000 to 44000~cm$^{-1}$) of ThF using both Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and $1+1'$ REMPI spectroscopy. We observe and assign 345 previously unreported vibronic bands of ThF. We demonstrate 30\% efficiency in the production of ThF$^+$ ions in the eEDM sensitive state using the $Ω= 3/2$ [32.85] intermediate state. In addition, we propose a method to increase the aforementioned efficiency to $\sim$100\% by using vibrational autoionization via core-nonpenetrating Rydberg states, and discuss theoretical and experimental challenges. Finally, we also report 83 vibronic bands of an impurity species, ThO.

We have reinvestigated the A$^1Π$$(v=0)$ level of $^{13}$C$^{18}$O\ using new high-resolution spectra obtained via multi-photon laser excitation as well as with synchrotron-based Fourier-transform absorption spectroscopy of the A$^1Π-\textrm{X}^1Σ^+$$(0, 0)$, e$^3Σ^--\textrm{X}^1Σ^+$$(1, 0)$, d$^3Δ-\textrm{X}^1Σ^+$$(4, 0)$, a$'^3Σ^+-\textrm{X}^1Σ^+$$(9, 0)$, and \atX$(11, 0)$ bands. In addition, Fourier-transform emission spectroscopy in the visible range is performed on the ${\rm B}^1Σ^+-{\rm A}^1Π$$(0, 0)$ band. Spectra of the \BX$(0, 0)$ band are measured in order to tie information from the latter emission data to the level structure of A$^1Π$$(v=0)$. The high pressures in the absorption cell at the synchrotron and the high temperatures in the emission discharge permitted monitoring of high rotational quantum levels in A$^1Π$$(v=0)$ up to $J=43$. All information, in total over 900 spectral lines, was included in an effective-Hamiltonian analysis of the A$^1Π(v=0, J)$ levels that are directly perturbed by the e$\,^3Σ^-$$(v=1)$, d$^3\!Δ$$(v=4)$, a$'^3Σ^+$$(v=9)$, d$^3\!Δ$$(v=0)$, I$\,^1Σ^-$$(v=0, 1)$ close-lying levels and the e$\,^3Σ^-$$(v=0,2)$, d$^3\!Δ$$(v=3,5)$, a$'^3Σ^+$$(v=8,10)$ remote levels, as well being indirectly influenced by the a$^3Π$$(v=10, 11)$ state. The influence of nine further perturber levels and their interactions was investigated and are not significant for reproducing the present experimental data. This analysis leads to a much improved description in terms of molecular constants and interaction parameters, compared to previous studies of the same energy region for other CO isotopologues.

This paper presents a study of the production of a single $W$ boson in association with one or more jets in proton-antiproton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, using the entire data set collected in 2001-2011 by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at the Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $9.0$ fb$^{-1}$. The $W$ boson is identified through its leptonic decays into electron and muon. The production cross sections are measured for each leptonic decay mode and combined after testing that the ratio of the $W(\rightarrow μν)+$jets cross section to the $W(\rightarrow eν)+$jets cross section agrees with the hypothesis of $e$-$μ$ lepton universality. The combination of measured cross sections, differential in the inclusive jet multiplicity ($W+\geqslant N$ jets with $N=1,\,2,\,3, \textrm{or }4$) and in the transverse energy of the leading jet, are compared with theoretical predictions.

The Collider Detector at Fermilab collected a unique sample of jets originating from bottom-quark fragmentation ($b$-jets) by selecting online proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collisions with a vertex displaced from the $p\bar{p}$ interaction point, consistent with the decay of a bottom-quark hadron. This data set, collected at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~\rm{fb}^{-1}$, is used to measure the $Z$-boson production cross section times branching ratio into $b\bar{b}$. The number of $Z\rightarrow b\bar{b}$ events is determined by fitting the dijet-mass distribution while constraining the dominant $b$-jet background, originating from QCD multijet events, with data. The result, $σ(p\bar{p} \rightarrow Z) \times \mathcal{B}(Z \rightarrow b\bar{b})= 1.11\pm 0.08(\text{stat}) \pm 0.14(\text{syst})~\text{nb}$, is the most precise measurement of this process, and is consistent with the standard-model prediction. The data set is also used to search for Higgs-boson production. No significant signal is expected in our data and the first upper limit on the cross section for the inclusive $p\bar p \rightarrow H\rightarrow b\bar b$ process at $\sqrt{s}=$1.96 TeV is set, corresponding to 33 times the expected standard-model cross section, or $σ= 40.6$ pb, at the 95\% confidence level.

The result for the direct measurement of the angle is $β= \left( 22.5 \pm 4.4 \,(\rm{stat.}) \pm 1.2 \,(\rm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 \,(\rm{model}) \right)^{\circ}$. The last quoted uncertainties are due to the composition of the $D^{0} \to K_{S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decay amplitude model, which is newly established by a Dalitz plot amplitude analysis of a high-statistics $e^{+}e^{-} \to c\bar{c}$ data sample as part of this analysis. We find the first evidence for $\cos2β>0$ at the level of $3.7$ standard deviations. The measurement excludes the trigonometric multifold solution $π/2 - β= (68.1 \pm 0.7)^{\circ}$ at the level of $7.3$ standard deviations and therefore resolves an ambiguity in the determination of the apex of the CKM Unitarity Triangle. The hypothesis of $β= 0^{\circ}$ is ruled out at the level of $5.1$ standard deviations, and thus CP violation is observed in $B^{0} \to D^{(*)} h^{0}$ decays.

Two dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials have demonstrated fascinating optical, electrical and thickness-dependent characteristics. These have been explored by numerous authors but reports on magnetic properties and spintronic applications of 2D vdW materials are scarce by comparison. By performing anomalous Hall effect transport measurements, we have characterised the thickness dependent magnetic properties of single crystalline vdW Fe3GeTe2. The nanoflakes of this vdW metallic material exhibit a single hard magnetic phase with a near square-shaped magnetic loop, large coercivity (up to 550 mT at 2 K), a Curie temperature near 200 K and strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using criticality analysis, we confirmed the existence of magnetic coupling between vdW atomic layers and obtained an estimated coupling length of ~ 5 vdW layers in Fe3GeTe2. Furthermore, the hard magnetic behaviour of Fe3GeTe2 can be well described by a proposed model. The magnetic properties of Fe3GeTe2 highlight its potential for integration into vdW magnetic heterostructures, paving the way for spintronic research and applications based on these devices.

As we demonstrate in examples, these notions also apply to smooth geometries that are merely asymptotically conical, such as the Eguchi-Hanson or resolved conifold geometries. In these cases we obtain a rather complete qualitative understanding of the varieties of asymptotic behavior, and we probe the connectivity of the phase space by finding infinitely large families of multiple geodesics connecting a point on the infinite past boundary with a point in the infinite future boundary.

We investigate the effect of varying the ion temperature gradient (ITG) and toroidal equilibrium scale sheared flow on ion-scale turbulence in the outer core of MAST by means of local gyrokinetic simulations. We show that nonlinear simulations reproduce the experimental ion heat flux and that the experimentally measured values of the ITG and the flow shear lie close to the turbulence threshold. We demonstrate that the system is subcritical in the presence of flow shear, i.e., the system is formally stable to small perturbations, but transitions to a turbulent state given a large enough initial perturbation. We propose that the transition to subcritical turbulence occurs via an intermediate state dominated by low number of coherent long-lived structures, close to threshold, which increase in number as the system is taken away from the threshold into the more strongly turbulent regime, until they fill the domain and a more conventional turbulence emerges. We show that the properties of turbulence are effectively functions of the distance to threshold, as quantified by the ion heat flux. We make quantitative comparisons of correlation lengths, times, and amplitudes between our simulations and experimental measurements using the MAST BES diagnostic. We find reasonable agreement of the correlation properties, most notably of the correlation time, for which significant discrepancies were found in previous numerical studies of MAST turbulence.

The results are obtained using the full Run II data sample collected with the Collider Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9.5fb$^{-1}$. The cross section is measured as a function of photon transverse energy, $E_T^γ$, in the range 30$ < E_T^γ <$500GeV and in the pseudorapidity region $|η^γ|<$1.0. The results are compared with predictions from parton-shower Monte Carlo models at leading order in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and from next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The latter show good agreement with the measured cross section.

We report on a measurement of the $D^{+}$-meson production cross section as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) in proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collisions at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy, using the full data set collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab in Tevatron Run II and corresponding to 10 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. We use $D^{+} \to K^-π^+π^+$ decays fully reconstructed in the central rapidity region $|y|<1$ with transverse momentum down to 1.5 GeV/$c$, a range previously unexplored in $p\bar{p}$ collisions. Inelastic $p\bar{p}$-scattering events are selected online using minimally-biasing requirements followed by an optimized offline selection. The $K^-π^+π^+$ mass distribution is used to identify the $D^+$ signal, and the $D^+$ transverse impact-parameter distribution is used to separate prompt production, occurring directly in the hard scattering process, from secondary production from $b$-hadron decays. We obtain a prompt $D^+$ signal of 2950 candidates corresponding to a total cross section $σ(D^+, 1.5 < p_T < 14.5~\mbox{GeV/}c, |y|<1) = 71.9 \pm 6.8 (\mbox{stat}) \pm 9.3 (\mbox{syst})~μ$b. While the measured cross sections are consistent with theoretical estimates in each $p_T$ bin, the shape of the observed $p_T$ spectrum is softer than the expectation from quantum chromodynamics. The results are unique in $p\bar{p}$ collisions and can improve the shape and uncertainties of future predictions.

A procedure is presented to map from the spatial correlation parameters of a turbulent density field (the radial and binormal correlation lengths and wavenumbers, and the fluctuation amplitude) to correlation parameters that would be measured by a Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic. The inverse map** is also derived, which results in resolution criteria for recovering correct correlation parameters, depending on the spatial response of the instrument quantified in terms of Point-Spread Functions (PSFs). Thus, a procedure is presented that allows for a systematic comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental observations. This procedure is illustrated using the MAST BES system and the validity of the underlying assumptions is tested on fluctuating density fields generated by direct numerical simulations using the gyrokinetic code GS2. The measurement of the correlation time, by means of the cross-correlation time-delay (CCTD) method, is also investigated and is shown to be sensitive to the fluctuating radial component of velocity, as well as to small variations in the spatial properties of the PSFs.

The flow shear associated with the differential toroidal rotation of tokamak plasmas breaks an underlying symmetry of the turbulent fluctuations imposed by the up-down symmetry of the magnetic equilibrium. Using experimental Beam-Emission-Spectroscopy (BES) measurements and gyrokinetic simulations, this symmetry breaking in ion-scale turbulence in MAST is shown to manifest itself as a tilt of the spatial correlation function and a finite skew in the distribution of the fluctuating density field. The tilt is a statistical expression of the "shearing" of the turbulent structures by the mean flow. The skewness of the distribution is related to the emergence of long-lived density structures in sheared, near-marginal plasma turbulence. The extent to which these effects are pronounced is argued (with the aid of the simulations) to depend on the distance from the nonlinear stability threshold. Away from the threshold, the symmetry is effectively restored.

Tokamak turbulence, driven by the ion-temperature gradient and occurring in the presence of flow shear, is investigated by means of local, ion-scale, electrostatic gyrokinetic simulations (with both kinetic ions and electrons) of the conditions in the outer core of the Mega-Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST). A parameter scan in the local values of the ion-temperature gradient and flow shear is performed. It is demonstrated that the experimentally observed state is near the stability threshold and that this stability threshold is nonlinear: sheared turbulence is subcritical, i.e. the system is formally stable to small perturbations, but, given a large enough initial perturbation, it transitions to a turbulent state. A scenario for such a transition is proposed and supported by numerical results: close to threshold, the nonlinear saturated state and the associated anomalous heat transport are dominated by long-lived coherent structures, which drift across the domain, have finite amplitudes, but are not volume filling; as the system is taken away from the threshold into the more unstable regime, the number of these structures increases until they overlap and a more conventional chaotic state emerges. Whereas this appears to represent a new scenario for transition to turbulence in tokamak plasmas, it is reminiscent of the behaviour of other subcritically turbulent systems, e.g. pipe flows and Keplerian magnetorotational accretion flows.

We present a measurement of the total {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections in $p\bar{p}$ collision at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, in a final state consistent with leptonic $W$ boson decay and jets originating from heavy-flavor quarks from either a $W$ or a $Z$ boson decay. This analysis uses the full data set collected with the CDF II detector during Run II of the Tevatron collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.4 fb$^{-1}$. An analysis of the dijet mass spectrum provides $3.7σ$ evidence of the summed production processes of either {\it WW} or {\it WZ} bosons with a measured total cross section of $σ_{WW+WZ} = 13.7\pm 3.9$~pb. Independent measurements of the {\it WW} and {\it WZ} production cross sections are allowed by the different heavy-flavor decay-patterns of the $W$ and $Z$ bosons and by the analysis of secondary-decay vertices reconstructed within heavy-flavor jets. The productions of {\it WW} and of {\it WZ} dibosons are independently seen with significances of $2.9σ$ and $2.1σ$, respectively, with total cross sections of $σ_{WW}= 9.4\pm 4.2$~pb and $σ_{WZ}=3.7^{+2.5}_{-2.2}$~pb. The measurements are consistent with standard-model predictions.

At the Fermilab Tevatron proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) collider, Drell-Yan lepton pairs are produced in the process $p \bar{p} \rightarrow e^+e^- + X$ through an intermediate $γ^*/Z$ boson. The forward-backward asymmetry in the polar-angle distribution of the $e^-$ as a function of the $e^+e^-$-pair mass is used to obtain $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$, the effective leptonic determination of the electroweak-mixing parameter $\sin^2θ_W$. The measurement sample, recorded by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), corresponds to 9.4~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity from $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center-of-momentum energy of 1.96 TeV, and is the full CDF Run II data set. The value of $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff}$ is found to be $0.23248 \pm 0.00053$. The combination with the previous CDF measurement based on $μ^+μ^-$ pairs yields $\sin^2θ^{\rm lept}_{\rm eff} = 0.23221 \pm 0.00046$. This result, when interpreted within the specified context of the standard model assuming $\sin^2 θ_W = 1 - M_W^2/M_Z^2$ and that the $W$- and $Z$-boson masses are on-shell, yields $\sin^2θ_W = 0.22400 \pm 0.00045$, or equivalently a $W$-boson mass of $80.328 \pm 0.024 \;{\rm GeV}/c^2$.

The $\mathrm{\tilde{C}}$ $^1$B$_2$ state of SO$_2$ has a double-minimum potential in the antisymmetric stretch coordinate, such that the minimum energy geometry has nonequivalent SO bond lengths. However, low-lying levels with odd quanta of antisymmetric stretch (b$_2$ vibrational symmetry) have not previously been observed because transitions into these levels from the zero-point level of the $\mathrm{\tilde{X}}$ state are vibronically forbidden. We use IR-UV double resonance to observe the b$_2$ vibrational levels of the $\mathrm{\tilde{C}}$ state below 1600 cm$^{-1}$ of vibrational excitation. This enables a direct characterization of the vibrational level staggering that results from the double-minimum potential. In addition, it allows us to deperturb the strong $c$-axis Coriolis interactions between levels of a$_1$ and b$_2$ vibrational symmetry, and to determine accurately the vibrational dependence of the rotational constants in the distorted $\mathrm{\tilde{C}}$ electronic state.

A new quartic force field for the SO$_2$ $\tilde{\text{C}}$$^1$B$_2$ state has been derived, based on high resolution data from S$^{16}$O$_2$ and S$^{18}$O$_2$. Included are eight $b_2$ symmetry vibrational levels of S$^{16}$O$_2$ reported in the first paper of this series [G. B. Park, $\textit{et al.}$, J. Chem. Phys. $\textbf{144}$, 144311 (2016)]. Many of the experimental observables not included in the fit, such as the Franck-Condon intensities and the Coriolis-perturbed effective $C$ rotational constants of highly anharmonic $\tilde{\text{C}}$ state vibrational levels, are well reproduced using our force field. Because the two stretching modes of the $\tilde{\text{C}}$ state are strongly coupled via Fermi-133 interaction, the vibrational structure of the $\tilde{\text{C}}$ state is analyzed in a Fermi-system basis set, constructed explicitly in this work via $\textit{partial}$ $\textit{diagonalization}$ of the vibrational Hamiltonian. The physical significance of the Fermi-system basis is discussed in terms of semiclassical dynamics, based on study of Fermi-resonance systems by Kellman and coworkers [M. E. Kellman and L. Xiao, J. Chem. Phys. $\textbf{93}$, 5821 (1990)]. By diagonalizing the vibrational Hamiltonian in the Fermi-system basis, the vibrational characters of all vibrational levels can be determined unambiguously. It is shown that the bending mode cannot be treated separately from the coupled stretching modes, particularly at vibrational energies of more than 2000 cm$^{-1}$. Based on our force field, the structure of the Coriolis interactions in the $\tilde{\text{C}}$ state of SO$_2$ is also discussed. We identify the origin of the alternating patterns in the effective $C$ rotational constants of levels in the vibrational progressions of the symmetry-breaking mode, $ν_β$ (which correlates with the antisymmetric stretching mode in our assignment scheme).

The $\mathrm{\tilde{C}}$ $^1$B$_2$ state of SO$_2$ has a double-minimum potential in the antisymmetric stretch coordinate, such that the minimum energy geometry has nonequivalent SO bond lengths. The asymmetry in the potential energy surface is expressed as a staggering in the energy levels of the $ν_3'$ progression. We have recently made the first observation of low-lying levels with odd quanta of $v_3'$, which allows us--in the current work--to characterize the origins of the level staggering. Our work demonstrates the usefulness of low-lying vibrational level structure, where the character of the wavefunctions can be relatively easily understood, to extract information about dynamically important potential energy surface crossings that occur at much higher energy. The measured staggering pattern is consistent with a vibronic coupling model for the double-minimum, which involves direct coupling to the bound 2$^1$A$_1$ state and indirect coupling with the repulsive 3$^1$A$_1$ state. The degree of staggering in the $ν_3'$ levels increases with quanta of bending excitation, which is consistent with the approach along the $\mathrm{\tilde{C}}$ state potential energy surface to a conical intersection with the 2$^1$A$_1$ surface at a bond angle of $\sim$145$^{\circ}$.

We have directly detected millimeter wave (mm-wave) free space superradiant emission from Rydberg states ($n \sim 30$) of barium atoms in a single shot. We trigger the cooperative effects with a weak initial pulse and detect with single-shot sensitivity and 20 ps time resolution, which allows measurement and shot-by-shot analysis of the distribution of decay rates, time delays, and time-dependent frequency shifts. Cooperative line shifts and decay rates are observed that exceed values that would correspond to the Doppler width of 250 kHz by a factor of 20 and the spontaneous emission rate of 50 Hz by a factor of $10^5$. The initial superradiant output pulse is followed by evolution of the radiation-coupled many-body system toward complex long-lasting emission modes. A comparison to a mean-field theory is presented which reproduces the quantitative time-domain results, but fails to account for either the frequency-domain observations or the long-lived features.

We report on four radio-detected cosmic-ray (CR) or CR-like events observed with the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA-sponsored long-duration balloon payload. Two of the four were previously identified as stratospheric CR air showers during the ANITA-I flight. A third stratospheric CR was detected during the ANITA-II flight. Here we report on characteristics these three unusual CR events, which develop nearly horizontally, 20-30~km above the surface of the Earth. In addition, we report on a fourth steeply upward-pointing ANITA-I CR-like radio event which has characteristics consistent with a primary that emerged from the surface of the ice. This suggests a possible $τ$-lepton decay as the origin of this event, but such an interpretation would require significant suppression of the Standard Model $τ$-neutrino cross section.
