An abundance analysis has been conducted for a sample of nine post-AGB candidate stars; eight of them have not been explored before. We find four very promising objects like HD 105262, HD 53300 and CpD$-62^o5428$ among them. We find strong evidence of dust-gas separation through selective depletion of refractive elements in HD 105262. The same effect is also observed in HD 53300, CpD$-62^o5428$ and HD 114855 although abundance peculiarities are relatively smaller for the last two stars. We find strong enrichment of nitrogen for HD 725, HD 842, HD 1457, HD 9233 and HD 61227 but no further evidence to support their post-AGB nature. We have compared the observed [N/C] ratios of these stars with the predictions of evolutionary models which include the rotation induced mixing.

We report the results of CCD $V$, $r$ and $I$ time-series photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5053. New times of maximum light are given for the eight known RR Lyrae stars in the field of our images and their periods are revised. Their $V$ light curves were Fourier decomposed to estimate their physical parameters. A discussion on the accuracy of the Fourier-based iron abundances, temperatures, masses and radii is given. New periods are found for the 5 known SX Phe stars and a critical discussion of their secular period changes is offered. The mean iron abundance for the RR Lyrae stars is found to be [Fe/H] $\sim -1.97 \pm 0.16$ and lower values are not supported by the present analysis. The absolute magnitude calibrations of the RR Lyrae stars yield an average true distance modulus of $16.12 \pm 0.04$ or a distance of $16.7 \pm 0.3$ kpc. Comparison of the observational CMD with theoretical isochrones indicates an age of $12.5 \pm 2.0$ Gyrs for the cluster. A careful identification of all reported Blue Stragglers (BS) and their $V,I$ magnitudes leads to the conclusion that BS12, BS22, BS23 and BS24 are not BS. On the other hand, three new BS are reported. Variability was found in seven BS, very likely of the SX Phe type in five of them, and in one red giant star. The new SX Phe stars follow established $PL$ relationships and indicate a distance in agreement with the distance from the RR Lyrae stars.

HD172189 is a spectroscopic eclipsing binary system with a rapidly-rotating pulsating delta Scuti component. It is also a member of the open cluster IC4756. These combined characteristics make it an excellent laboratory for asteroseismic studies. To date, HD172189 has been analysed in detail photometrically but not spectroscopically. For this reason we have compiled a set of spectroscopic data to determine the absolute and atmospheric parameters of the components. We determined the radial velocities (RV) of both components using four different techniques. We disentangled the binary spectra using KOREL, and performed the first abundance analysis on both disentangled spectra. By combining the spectroscopic results and the photometric data, we obtained the component masses, 1.8 and 1.7 solar masses, and radii, 4.0 and 2.4 solar radii, for inclination i = 73.2 degrees, eccentricity e = 0.28, and orbital period 5.70198 days. Effective temperatures of 7600 K and 8100 K were also determined. The measured vsini are 78 and 74 km/s, respectively, giving rotational periods of 2.50 and 1.55 days for the components. The abundance analysis shows [Fe/H] = -0.28 for the primary (pulsating) star, consistent with observations of IC4756. We also present an assessment of the different analysis techniques used to obtain the RVs and the global parameters.

Detailed behavior of the stars along the cycle of pulsation has been determined from the observed photometric indices and the synthetic indices from atmospheric models. The reddening of the zone is found to be negligible, as estimated from the reddening of several objects in the same region of the sky. Hence the distances to the individual objects are also estimated.

New CCD photometry of NGC 6366 has lead to the discovery of some variable stars. Two possible Anomalous Cepheids (or Pop II Cepheids), three long period variables, one SX Phe and one eclipsing binary have been found. Also a list of 10 candidate variables is reported. The light curve of the RRab star, V1, has been decomposed into its Fourier harmonics, and the Fourier parameters were used to estimate the star's metallicity and distance; [Fe/H] = -0.87 +- 0.14 and d = 3.2 +- 0.1 kpc. It is argued that V1 may not be a member of the cluster but rather a more distant object. If this is so, an upper limit for the distance to the cluster of 2.8 +- 0.1 kpc can be estimated. The P-L relationship for SX Phe stars and the identified modes in the newly discovered SX Phe variable, V6, allow yet another independent determination of the distance to the cluster of d = 2.7 \+- 0.1 kpc. The M_V - {\rm [Fe/H]} relationship for RR Lyrae stars is addressed and the case of V1 is discussed.

We report the results of CCD V and r photometry of the globular cluster NGC 5466. The difference image analysis technique adopted in this work has resulted in accurate time series photometry even in crowded regions of the cluster enabling us to discover five probably semi-regular variables. We present new photometry of three previously known eclipsing binaries and six SX Phe stars. The light curves of the RR Lyrae stars have been decomposed in their Fourier harmonics and their fundamental physical parameters have been estimated using semi-empirical calibrations. The zero points of the metallicity, luminosity and temperature scales are discussed and our Fourier results are transformed accordingly. The average iron abundance and distance to the Sun derived from individual RR Lyrae stars, indicate values of [Fe/H]=-1.91 +- 0.19 and D = 16.0 +- 0.6 kpc, or a true distance modulus of 16.02 +- 0.09 mag, for the parent cluster. These values are respectively in the Zinn & West metallicity scale and in agreement with recent luminosity determinations for the RR Lyrae stars in the LMC. The M_V-[Fe/H] relation has been recalibrated as M_V=+(0.18+-0.03)[Fe/H]+(0.85+-0.05) using the mean values derived by the Fourier technique on RR Lyrae stars in a family of clusters. This equation predicts M_V=0.58 mag for [Fe/H]=-1.5, in agreement with the average absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars calculated from several independent methods. The M_V-[Fe/H] relationship and the value of [Fe/H] have implications on the age of the globular clusters when determined from the magnitude difference between the horizontal branch and the turn off point (HB-TO method). The above results however would not imply a change in the age of NGC 5466, of 12.5+-0.9 Gyr, estimated from recent isochrone fitting.

Aims: This work presents a high--precision variability survey in the field of the old, super metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791.
Methods: The data sample consists of more than 75,000 high-precision CCD time series measurements in the V band obtained mainly at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, with additional data from S. Pedro Martir and Loiano observatories, over a time span of ten nights. The field covers an area of 42x28 arcmin^2.
Results: We have discovered 260 new variables and re-determined periods and amplitudes of 70 known variable stars. By means of a photometric evaluation of the membership in NGC 6791, and a preliminary membership based on the proper motions, we give a full description of the variable content of the cluster and surrounding field in the range 16<V<23.5. Accurate periods can be given for the variables with P<4.0 d, while for ones with longer periods the limited time-baseline hampered precise determinations. We categorized the entire sample as follows: 6 pulsating, 3 irregular, 3 cataclysmic, 89 rotational variables and 61 eclipsing systems; moreover, we detected 168 candidate variables for which we cannot give a variability class since their periods are much longer than our time baseline.
Conclusions: On the basis of photometric considerations, and of the positions of the stars with respect to the center of the cluster, we inferred that 11 new variable stars are likely members of the cluster, for 22 stars the membership is doubtful and 137 are likely non-members. We also detected an outburst of about 3 mag in the light curve of a very faint blue star belonging to the cluster and we suggest that this star could be a new U Gem (dwarf nova) cataclysmic variable.

Aims. Considering the strong dependence of planet frequency on stellar metallicity, we studied the metal rich old open cluster NGC 6791 and searched for close-in planets using the transit technique.
Methods. A ten-night observational campaign was performed using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (3.6m), the San Pedro Mártir telescope (2.1m), and the Loiano telescope (1.5m). To increase the transit detection probability we also made use of the Bruntt et al. (2003) eight-nights observational campaign. Adequate photometric precision for the detection of planetary transits was achieved.
Results. Should the frequency and properties of close-in planets in NGC 6791 be similar to those orbiting field stars of similar metallicity, then detailed simulations foresee the presence of 2-3 transiting planets. Instead, we do not confirm the transit candidates proposed by Bruntt et al. (2003). The probability that the null detection is simply due to chance coincidence is estimated to be 3%-10%, depending on the metallicity assumed for the cluster.
Conclusions. Possible explanations of the null-detection of transits include: (i) a lower frequency of close-in planets in star clusters; (ii) a smaller planetary radius for planets orbiting super metal rich stars; or (iii) limitations in the basic assumptions. More extensive photometry with 3-4m class telescopes is required to allow conclusive inferences about the frequency of planets in NGC 6791.

Light curve decomposition of the RR Lyrae stars was carried out and the corresponding mean physical parameters [Fe/H] = -1.47, Teff = 6276 K, log L = 1.63 Lsun and Mv = 0.71 from nine RRab and [Fe/H] = -1.61, M = 0.54 Msun, Teff = 7215 K, log L = 1.74 Lsun and Mv = 0.71 from two RRc stars were calculated. A comparison of the radii obtained from the above luminosity and temperature with predicted radii from nonlinear convective models is discussed. The estimated mean distance to the cluster is 10.49 +- 0.15 kpc. These results place M2 correctly in the general globular cluster sequences Oosterhoff type, mass, luminosity and temperature, all as a function of the metallicity. Mean relationships for M, log L/Lsun, Teff and Mv as a function of [Fe/H] for a family of globular clusters are offered. These trends are consistent with evolutionary and structural notions on the horizontal branch. Eight new variables are reported.

We present the results of a photometric multisite campaign on the $δ$ Scuti Pre-Main-Sequence star IP Per. Nine telescopes have been involved in the observations, with a total of about 190 hours of observations over 38 nights. Present data confirms the multiperiodic nature of this star and leads to the identification of at least nine pulsational frequencies. Comparison with the predictions of linear non-adiabatic radial pulsation models allowed us to identify only five of the nine observed frequencies, and to constrain the position of IP Per in the HR diagram. The latter is in good agreement with the empirical determination of the stellar parameters obtained by Miroshnichenko et al. (2001). An initial interpretation of the observed frequencies using the Aarhus non-radial pulsation code suggests that three frequencies could be associated with non-radial ($l$=2) modes. Finally, we present new evolutionary and pulsation models at lower metallicity (Z=0.008) to take into account the possibility that IP Per is metal deficient, as indicated by Miroshnichenko et al. (2001).

We have carried out abundance analysis for a sample of high galactic latitude supergiants in search of evolved stars. HD 10285 and HD 25291 are moderately metal-poor and show the influence of mixing that has brought the products of NeNa cycle to the surface. The high galactic latitude B supergiant HD 137569 shows selective depletion of refractory elements normally seen in post-AGB stars. We find that the high velocity B type star HD 172324 shows moderate deficiency of Fe group elements but the CNO abundances are very similar to that of disk B supergiants. The observed variations in the radial velocities, transient appearance of emission components in hydrogen line profiles and doubling of O I lines at 7774Åsupport the possibility of this star being a pulsating variable or a binary star.

We present a study based on more than 2500 uvby-measurements collected on HD 172189, a new eclipsing binary system with a Delta Sct-type pulsating component that belongs to the open cluster IC 4756. The great interest of this object lies in that three important characteristics coexist: cluster membership, binarity and pulsation. Its binarity and the Delta Sct-type pulsations of one component were detected in the course of several Stromgren photometric campaigns. The frequency analysis of all the uvby out-of-eclipse data reveals a clear frequency of 19.5974 c/d as well as the existence of other high values in the range 18-20 c/d. We have also carried out a first evaluation of the binary parameters and determined a value of 5.702 d for the orbital period. An additional potential interest of HD 172189 resides in its location in the field of view of the COROT mission and, therefore, this star is an excellent candidate for becoming a target for asteroseismology.

We present the first results of a 2-year high-resolution spectroscopy campaign of 59 candidate Gamma Doradus stars which were mainly discovered from the HIPPARCOS astrometric mission. More than 60 % of the stars present line profile variations which can be interpreted as due to pulsation related to Gamma Doradus stars. For all stars we also derived the projected rotation velocity (up to more than 200 km\s). The amplitude ratios 2K/Delta m for the main HIPPARCOS frequency are in the range 35 - 96 (km\s)\mag. Less than 50 % of the candidates are possible members of binary systems, with 20 stars being confirmed Gamma Doradus. At least 6 stars present composite spectra, and in all but one case (for which only one spectrum could be obtained), the narrow component shows line profile variations, pointing towards an uncomfortable situation if this narrow component originates from a shell surrounding the star. This paper is the first of a series concerning mode identification using both photometric and spectroscopic methods for the confirmed Gamma Doradus stars of the present sample.

We present the results of multisite observations spanning two years on the pre--main-sequence (PMS) star V351 Ori. A total of around 180 hours of observations over 29 nights have been collected, allowing us to measure five different periodicities, most likely related to the delta
Scuti variability of V351 Ori. Comparison with the predictions of linear nonadiabatic radial pulsation models put stringent constraints on the stellar parameters and indicate that the distance to V351 Ori is intermediate between the lower limit measured by Hipparcos (210 pc) and that of the Orion Nebula (450 pc). However, radial pulsation models are unable to reproduce all of the observed frequencies with a single choice of (M, L, and Te), suggesting the presence of additional nonradial modes.

A new calibration of the Mv-W(OI 7774) relationship has been calculated using better estimates of reddenings and distances to a sample of 27 calibrator stars of A-G spectral types, based on accurate parallaxes and proper motions from the Hipparcos and Tycho catalogues. The present calibration predicts absolute magnitude with accuracies of $\pm$ 0.38 mag. for a sample covering a large range of Mv, from -9.5 to $+0.35$ mag.
The colour term included in a previous paper has been dropped since its inclusion was not bringing any significant improvement to the calibration. The variation of the OI 7774 feature in the classical cepheid SS Sct has been studied. We calculated a phase-dependent correction to random phase OI feature strengths in Cepheids, such that it predicts mean absolute magnitudes using the above calibration. After applying such correction, we could increase the list of calibrators to 58 by adding Mv and OI triplet strength data for 31 classical Cepheids.
The standard error of the calibration using the composite sample was comparable to that obtained from the primary 27 calibrators, showing that it is possible to calculate mean Cepheid luminosities from random phase observations of the OI7774 feature. We use our derived calibrations to estimate Mv for a set of evolved objects to be able to locate their positions in the H-R diagram.

We present time series observations of intermediate mass PMS stars belonging to the young star cluster IC 348. The new data reveal that a young member of the cluster, H254, undergoes periodic light variations with delta Scuti-like characteristics. This occurrence provides an unambiguous evidence confirming the prediction that intermediate-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars should experience this transient instability during their approach to the main-sequence. On the basis of the measured frequency f=7.406 c/d, we are able to constrain the intrinsic stellar parameters of H254 by means of linear, non adiabatic, radial pulsation models. The range of the resulting luminosity and effective temperature permitted by the models is narrower than the observational values. In particular, the pulsation analysis allows to derive an independent estimate of the distance to IC 348 of about 320 pc. Further observations could either confirm the monoperiodic nature of H254 or reveal the presence of other frequencies.

Atmospheric Abundances in Post-AGB candidates of Intermediate Temperature

Detailed atmospheric abundances have been calculated for a sample of A-G supergiant stars with IR fluxes and/or high galactic latitudes. HD 172481 and HD 158616 show clear indications of being post-AGB stars that have experienced third dredge-up. HD 158616 is carbon-rich while the abundance pattern of HD 172481 and its large Li enhancement gives support to the hot bottom burning scenario that explains paucity of carbon-rich stars among AGB stars. HD 172324 is very likely a hot post-AGB star that shows a strong carbon deficiency. HD 725, HD 218753 and HD 331319 also appear to be evolved objects between the red giant and the AGB. HD 9167, HD 173638 with a few exceptions, reflect solar abundances and no signs of post red giant evolution. They are most likely young massive disk supergiants. Further analysis of proto-Planetary Nebula HDE 341617 reveals that He lines show signs of velocity stratification. The emission lines have weakened considerably since 1993. The envelope expands at 19 km s$^{-1}$ relative to the star. Atmospheric abundances, evolutionary tracks and isochrones are used to estimate masses and ages of all stars in the sample.

The possibility to perform the frequency analysis of the light variation of V798 Cyg on the basis of a more accurate set of data and the Fourier decomposition of the new light curve of V831 Tau allowed us to improve the knowledge of the HADS. The following points are now better defined:
1) V798 Cyg is confirmed to be a double-mode pulsator and its similarity with V1719 Cyg definitely established: the peculiar light curve on f1 (descending branch steeper than the observed one) and the double-mode pulsation with ratio 0.800 have to be considered together in modelling these stars.
2) The detection of additional periodicities in light curves is confirmed to be a delicate matter. A thorough discussion would be needed to invalidate previous results estalished on the basis of better time--series, as otherwise confusing results are obtained, as in the case of V798 Cyg (Hintz and Joner 1997, PASP 109, 639)
3) The short-period variable V831 Tau shows a light curve very similar to other stars having the same period; the previously reported sinusoidal light curve is not confirmed. The light curves of HADS towards short periods have a very regular progression in the Fourier parameters space.
4) The gap around 0.25-0.30 in the R21 distribution of HADS light curves is confirmed. Hintz and Joner (1997) claimed that it can be filled by the values obtained from double-mode pulsators, but the available photometry does not support that claim which seems the result from improper handling of the data.
