Overflow metabolism is a ubiquitous phenomenon whereby cells in aerobic conditions excrete byproducts of glycolysis, such as lactate or acetate, into the medium in a seemingly wasteful and polluting fashion. Whilst overflow may confer microbes a fitness advantage by allowing them to overcome a finite oxidative capacity, its occurrence in higher organisms is harder to assess. Important insight was however obtained in recent experiments conducted at single-cell resolution, which revealed that accumulation of overflow products in tumor cell cultures known as the Warburg effect arises from imbalances in the dynamic and heterogeneous inter-cellular exchange network through which cells collectively regulate the microenvironment. Here we provide a quantitative characterization of this scenario by integrating metabolic network modeling with diffusion constraints, statistical physics theory and single-cell experimental flux data. On the theoretical side, we clarify how diffusion-limited exchanges shape the space of viable metabolic states of a multi-cellular system. Specifically, a phase transition from a balanced network of exchanges to an unbalanced overflow regime occurs as the mean cellular glucose and oxygen uptakes vary while single-cell metabolic phenotypes are highly heterogeneous around this transition. We then show that time-resolved data from human tumor-stroma cell co-cultures consistently map to this crossover region, supporting the idea that environmental deterioration reflects a failure of coordination among recurrently interacting cells. In summary, our findings suggest that, rather than deriving from multiple independent cell-autonomous processes, environmental control is an emergent feature of multi-cellular systems.

The most reliable single-epoch supermassive black hole mass ($M_{\rm BH}$) estimates in quasars are obtained by using the velocity widths of low-ionization emission lines, typically the H$β$ $\lambda4861$ line. Unfortunately, this line is redshifted out of the optical band at $z\approx1$, leaving $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates to rely on proxy rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) emission lines, such as C IV $\lambda1549$ or Mg II $\lambda2800$, which contain intrinsic challenges when measuring, resulting in uncertain $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates. In this work, we aim at correcting $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates derived from the C IV and Mg II emission lines based on estimates derived from the H$β$ emission line. We find that employing the equivalent width of C IV in deriving $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates based on Mg II and C IV provides values that are closest to those obtained from H$β$. We also provide prescriptions to estimate $M_{\rm BH}$ values when only C IV, only Mg II, and both C IV and Mg II are measurable. We find that utilizing both emission lines, where available, reduces the scatter of UV-based $M_{\rm BH}$ estimates by $\sim15\%$ when compared to previous studies. Lastly, we discuss the potential of our prescriptions to provide more accurate and precise estimates of $M_{\rm BH}$ given a much larger sample of quasars at $3.20 \lesssim z \lesssim 3.50$, where both Mg II and H$β$ can be measured in the same near-infrared spectrum.

We provide a complete classification with respect to asymptotic behaviour, stability and intersections properties of radial smooth solutions to the equation $-Δ_g u=e^u$ on Riemannian model manifolds $(M,g)$ in dimension $N\ge 2$. Our assumptions include Riemannian manifolds with sectional curvatures bounded or unbounded from below. Intersection and stability properties of radial solutions are influenced by the dimension $N$ in the sense that two different kinds of behaviour occur when $2\leq N\le 9$ or $N\geq 10$, respectively. The crucial role of these dimensions in classifying solutions is well-known in Euclidean space.

Context. The ZOA does not allow clear optical observations of extragalactic sources behind the Milky Way due to the meaningful extinction of the optical emission of these objects. The observations in NIR wavelengths represent a potential source of astronomical discoveries supporting the detection of new galaxies, completing the picture of the large scale structure in this still little explored area of the sky. Aims. Our aim is to decipher the nature of the overdensity located behind the Milky Way, in the tile b204 of the VVV survey. Methods. We studied an area of six arcmin around a galaxy concentration located at l = 354.82° and b = -9.81°. We selected five galaxies taking into account the source distribution on the sky, in order to optimise the requested time for the observations, and we obtained the spectra with Flamingos 2 long-slit spectrograph at Gemini South 8.1-meter telescope. To identify and characterise the absorption features we have fitted the galaxies underlying spectrum using the starlight code together with the IRTF stellar library. In addition, the spectroscopic findings are reinforced using complementary photometric techniques such as red-sequence and photometric redshift estimation. Results. The mean spectroscopic redshift estimated from the NIR spectra is z = 0.225 +- 0.014. This value presents a good agreement with that obtained from photometric analysis, photoz = 0.21 +- 0.08, and the probability distribution function of the galaxies in the studied region. Also, the red-sequence slope is consistent with the one expected for NIR observations of galaxy clusters. Conclusions. The redshifts obtained from both, photometric and spectroscopic techniques are in good agreement allowing the confirmation of the nature of this structure at z = 0.225 +- 0.014, unveiling a new galaxy cluster, VVVGCl-B J181435-381432, behind the Milky Way bulge.

Families of asteroids generated by the collisional fragmentation of a common parent body have been identified using clustering methods of asteroids in their proper orbital element space. An alternative method has been developed in order to identify collisional families from the correlation between the asteroid fragment sizes and their proper semi-major axis distance from the family centre (V-shape). This method has been shown to be effective in the cases of the very diffuse families that formed billions of years ago. We obtained photometric observations of asteroids in order to construct their rotational light curves; we combine them with the literature light curves and sparse-in-time photometry; we input these data in the light curve inversion methods to determine the shape and the spin pole of the asteroids in order to assess whether an object is prograde or retrograde. The ultimate goal is to assess whether we find an excess of retrograde asteroids on the inward side of the V-shape of a 4 Gyr asteroid family identified via the V-shape method. This excess of retrograde rotators is predicted by the theory of asteroid family evolution. We obtained the spin poles for 55 asteroids claimed to belong to a 4 Gyr collisional family of the inner main belt that consists of low-albedo asteroids. After re-evaluating the albedo and spectroscopic information, we found that nine of these asteroids are interlopers in the 4 Gyr family. Of the 46 remaining asteroids, 31 are found to be retrograde and 15 prograde. We also found that these retrograde rotators have a very low probability (1.29%) of being due to random sampling from an underlying uniform distribution of spin poles. Our results constitute corroborating evidence that the asteroids identified as members of a 4 Gyr collisional family have a common origin, thus strengthening their family membership.

Pathologists diagnose and grade prostate cancer by examining tissue from needle biopsies on glass slides. The cancer's severity and risk of metastasis are determined by the Gleason grade, a score based on the organization and morphology of prostate cancer glands. For diagnostic work-up, pathologists first locate glands in the whole biopsy core, and -- if they detect cancer -- they assign a Gleason grade. This time-consuming process is subject to errors and significant inter-observer variability, despite strict diagnostic criteria. This paper proposes an automated workflow that follows pathologists' \textit{modus operandi}, isolating and classifying multi-scale patches of individual glands in whole slide images (WSI) of biopsy tissues using distinct steps: (1) two fully convolutional networks segment epithelium versus stroma and gland boundaries, respectively; (2) a classifier network separates benign from cancer glands at high magnification; and (3) an additional classifier predicts the grade of each cancer gland at low magnification. Altogether, this process provides a gland-specific approach for prostate cancer grading that we compare against other machine-learning-based grading methods.

We propose a novel semi-supervised learning approach for classification of histopathology images. We employ strong supervision with patch-level annotations combined with a novel co-training loss to create a semi-supervised learning framework. Co-training relies on multiple conditionally independent and sufficient views of the data. We separate the hematoxylin and eosin channels in pathology images using color deconvolution to create two views of each slide that can partially fulfill these requirements. Two separate CNNs are used to embed the two views into a joint feature space. We use a contrastive loss between the views in this feature space to implement co-training. We evaluate our approach in clear cell renal cell and prostate carcinomas, and demonstrate improvement over state-of-the-art semi-supervised learning methods.

The purpose of this work is to develop a model for a rectangular plate made of an orthotropic material. If compared with the classical model of the isotropic plate, the relaxed condition of orthotropy increases the degrees of freedom as a consequence of the larger number of elastic parameters, thus allowing to better describe rectangular plates having different behaviors in the two directions parallel to the edges of the rectangle.
We have in mind structures like decks of bridges where the rigidity in the direction of their length does not necessarily coincide with the one in the direction of its width.
We introduce some basic notions from the theory of linear elasticity, having a special attention for the theory of orthotropic materials. In particular we recall the Hooke's law in its general setting and we explain how it can be simplified under the orthotropy assumption.
Following the approach of the Kirchhoff-Love model, we obtain the bending energy of an orthotropic plate and from it the corresponding equilibrium equation when the plate is subject to the action of a vertical load. Accordingly, we write the kinetic energy of the plate which combined with the bending energy gives the complete Lagrangian; classical variational methods then produces the equation of motion.

The standard model of stellar evolution in Close Binary Systems assumes that during mass transfer episodes the system is in a synchronised and circularised state. Remarkably, the redback system PSR J1723-2837 has an orbital period derivative $\dot{P}_{orb}$ too large to be explained by this model. Motivated by this fact, we investigate the action of tidal forces in between two consecutive mass transfer episodes for a system under irradiation feedback, which is a plausible progenitor for PSR J1723-2837. We base our analysis on Hut's treatment of equilibrium tidal evolution, generalised by considering the donor as a two layers object that may not rotate as a rigid body. We also analyse three different relations for the viscosity with the tidal forcing frequency. We found that the large value measured for $\dot{P}_{orb}$ can be reached by systems where the donor star rotates slower (by few percent) than the orbit just after mass transfer episodes. Van Staden & Antoniadis have observed this object and reported a lack of synchronism, opposite to that required by the Hut's theory to account for the observed $\dot{P}_{orb}$. Motivated by this discrepancy, we analyse photometric data obtained by the spacecraft Kepler second mission K2, with the purpose of identifying the periods present in PSR J1723-2837. We notice several periods close to those of the orbit and the rotation. The obtained periods pattern reveals the presence of a more complex phenomenology, which would not be well described in the frame of the weak friction model of equilibrium tides.

We present a comprehensive study of the massive binary system HM1~8, based on multi-epoch high resolution spectroscopy, $V$-band photometry and archival X-ray data. Spectra from the OWN Survey, a high resolution optical monitoring of Southern O and WN stars, are used to analyse the spectral morphology and perform quantitative spectroscopic analysis of both stellar components. The primary and secondary components are classified as O4.5~IV(f) and O9.7~V, respectively. From a radial-velocity (RV) study we derived a set of orbital parameters for the system. We found an eccentric orbit ($e=0.14 \pm 0.01$) with a period of $P = 5.87820 \pm 0.00008$~days. Through the simultaneous analysis of the RVs and the $V$-band light curve we derived an orbital inclination of $70.0^{\circ} \pm 2.0$ and stellar masses of $M_a=33.6^{+1.4}_{-1.2}~\text{M}_{\sun}$ for the primary, and $M_b=17.7^{+0.5}_{-0.7}~\text{M}_{\sun}$ for the secondary. The components show projected rotational velocities $v_1\sin{i}=105 \pm 14~\text{km~s}^{-1}$ and $v_2\sin{i}=82 \pm 15~\text{km~s}^{-1}$, respectively. A tidal evolution analysis is also performed and found to be in agreement with the orbital characteristics. Finally, the available X-ray observations show no evidence of a colliding winds region, therefore the X-ray emission is attributed to stellar winds.

The main purpose of the present paper is to compare two different kinds of approaches in modeling the deck of a suspension bridge: in the first approach we look at the deck as a rectangular plate and in the second one we look at the deck as a beam for vertical deflections and as a rod for torsional deformations. Throughout this paper we will refer to the model corresponding to the second approach as the \textit{beam-rod model}. In our discussion, we observe that the beam-rod model has more \textit{degrees of freedom} if compared with the isotropic plate model. For this reason the beam-rod model is supposed to be more appropiate to describe the behavior of the deck of a real suspension bridge. A possible strategy to make the plate model more efficient could be to relax the isotropy condition with a more general condition of orthotropy, which is expected to increase the degrees of freedom in view of the larger number of elastic parameters. In this new setting, a comparison between the two approaches becomes now possible.
Basic results are proved for the suggested problem, from existence and uniqueness of solutions to spectral properties. We suggest realistic values for the elastic parameters thus obtaining with both approaches similar responses in the static and dynamic behavior of the deck. This can be considered as a preliminary article since many work has still to be done with the perspective of formulating models for a complete suspension bridge which take into account not only the deck but also the action on it of cables and hangers. With this perspective, a section is devoted to possible future developments.

We propose a nonlinear registration-based model reduction procedure for rapid and reliable solution of parameterized two-dimensional steady conservation laws. This class of problems is challenging for model reduction techniques due to the presence of nonlinear terms in the equations and also due to the presence of parameter-dependent discontinuities that cannot be adequately represented through linear approximation spaces. Our approach builds on a general (i.e., independent of the underlying equation) registration procedure for the computation of a map** $Φ$ that tracks moving features of the solution field and on an hyper-reduced least-squares Petrov-Galerkin reduced-order model for the rapid and reliable computation of the solution coefficients. The contributions of this work are twofold. First, we investigate the application of registration-based methods to two-dimensional hyperbolic systems. Second, we propose a multi-fidelity approach to reduce the offline costs associated with the construction of the parameterized map** and the reduced-order model. We discuss the application to an inviscid supersonic flow past a parameterized bump, to illustrate the many features of our method and to demonstrate its effectiveness.

Based on the observation of sizeable target-transverse-spin asymmetries in single-hadron and hadron-pair production in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS), the chiral-odd transversity quark distribution functions $h_1^q$ are nowadays well established. Several possible channels to access these functions were originally proposed. One candidate is the measurement of the polarisation of $Λ$ hyperons produced in SIDIS off transversely polarised nucleons, where the transverse polarisation of the struck quark might be transferred to the final-state hyperon. In this article, we present the COMPASS results on the transversity-induced polarisation of $Λ$ and $\barΛ$ hyperons produced in SIDIS off transversely polarised protons. Within the experimental uncertainties, no significant deviation from zero was observed. The results are discussed in the context of different models taking into account previous experimental results on $h_1^u$ and $h_1^d$.

This paper investigates the stability properties of the spectrum of the classical Steklov problem under domain perturbation. We find conditions which guarantee the spectral stability and we show their optimality. We emphasize the fact that our spectral stability results also involve convergence of eigenfunctions in a suitable sense according with the definition of connecting system by \cite{Vainikko}. The convergence of eigenfunctions can be expressed in terms of the $H^1$ strong convergence. The arguments used in our proofs are based on an appropriate definition of compact convergence of the resolvent operators associated with the Steklov problems on varying domains. In order to show the optimality of our conditions we present alternative assumptions which give rise to a degeneration of the spectrum or to a discontinuity of the spectrum in the sense that the eigenvalues converge to the eigenvalues of a limit problem which does not coincide with the Steklov problem on the limiting domain.

We study the spectral stability of two fourth order Steklov problems upon domain perturbation. One of the two problems is the classical DBS - Dirichlet Biharmonic Steklov - problem, the other one is a variant. Under a comparatively weak condition on the convergence of the domains, we prove the stability of the resolvent operators for both problems, which implies the stability of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The stability estimates for the eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of the strong $H^2$-norms. The analysis is carried out without assuming that the domains are star-shaped. Our condition turns out to be sharp at least for the variant of the DBS problem. In the case of the DBS problem, we prove stability of a suitable Dirichlet-to-Neumann type map under very weak conditions on the convergence of the domains and we formulate an open problem. As bypass product of our analysis, we provide some stability and instability results for Navier and Navier-type boundary value problems for the biharmonic operator.

We present a comprehensive study for common second order PDE's in two dimensional disk-like systems and show how their solution can be approximated by finding the Green function of an effective one dimensional system. After elaborating on the formalism, we propose to secure an exact solution via a Fourier expansion of the Green function, which entails to solve an infinitely countable system of differential equations for the Green-Fourier modes that in the simplest case yields the source-free Green distribution. We present results on non separable systems$-$or such whose solution cannot be obtained by the usual variable separation technique$-$on both annulus and disc geometries, and show how the resulting one dimensional Fourier modes potentially generate a near-exact solution. Numerical solutions will be obtained via finite differentiation using FDM or FEM with the three-point stencil approximation to derivatives. Comparing to known exact solutions, our results achieve an estimated numerical relative error below $10^{-6}$.

The measurement covers the range 5.0 GeV/$c^2$ $< W <$ 17.0 GeV/$c^2$, with the average kinematics $\langle Q^{2} \rangle=$ 2.1 (GeV/$c$)$^2$, $\langle W \rangle= 7.6$ GeV/$c^2$, and $\langle p^{2}_{\rm T} \rangle = 0.16$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. Here, $Q^2$ denotes the virtuality of the exchanged photon, $W$ the mass of the final hadronic system and $p_T$ the transverse momentum of the $ω$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($γ^*_T \to V_L$) indicate a violation of $s$-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a sizeable contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange (UPE) transitions that decreases with increasing $W$. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow to evaluate in a model-dependent way the contribution of UPE transitions and assess the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $ω$ production.

The availability of muon beams with high energy and opposite charge and polarization will allow to access the Compton form factor related to the dominant GPD $H$ and to study the $x_{B}$-dependence of the $t$-slope of the pure DVCS cross section and to study nucleon tomography. Projections on the achievable accuracies and preliminary results of pilot measurements will be presented.

Hadron leptoproduction in Semi-Inclusive measurements of Deep-Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) on unpolarised nucleons allows one to get information on the intrinsic transverse momentum of quarks in a nucleon and on the Boer-Mulders function through the measurement of azimuthal modulations in the cross section. These modulations were recently measured by the HERMES experiment at DESY on proton and deuteron targets, and by the COMPASS experiment using the CERN SPS muon beam and a $^6$LiD target. In both cases, the amplitudes of the $\cosφ_h$ and $\cos 2φ_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependences for both positive and negative hadrons. It has been known since some time that the measured final-state hadrons in those SIDIS experiments receive a contribution from exclusive diffractive production of vector mesons, particularly important at large values of $z$, the fraction of the virtual photon energy carried by the hadron. In previous measurements of azimuthal asymmetries this contribution was not taken into account, because it was not known that it could distort the azimuthal modulations. Presently, a method to evaluate the contribution of the exclusive reactions to the azimuthal asymmetries measured by COMPASS has been developed. The subtraction of this contribution results in a better understanding of the kinematic effects, and the remaining non-zero $\cos 2φ_h$ modulation gives indication for a non-zero Boer-Mulders effect.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have proven effective in modeling distributions of high-dimensional data. However, their training instability is a well-known hindrance to convergence, which results in practical challenges in their applications to novel data. Furthermore, even when convergence is reached, GANs can be affected by mode collapse, a phenomenon for which the generator learns to model only a small part of the target distribution, disregarding the vast majority of the data manifold or distribution. This paper addresses these challenges by introducing SetGAN, an adversarial architecture that processes sets of generated and real samples, and discriminates between the origins of these sets (i.e., training versus generated data) in a flexible, permutation invariant manner. We also propose a new metric to quantitatively evaluate GANs that does not require previous knowledge of the application, apart from the data itself. Using the new metric, in conjunction with the state-of-the-art evaluation methods, we show that the proposed architecture, when compared with GAN variants stemming from similar strategies, produces more accurate models of the input data in a way that is also less sensitive to hyperparameter settings.

We consider a partially hinged rectangular plate and its normal modes. The dynamical properties of the plate are influenced by the spectrum of the associated eingenvalue problem. In order to improve the stability of the plate, it seems reasonable to place a certain amount of stiffening material in appropriate regions. If we look at the partial differential equation appearing in the model, this corresponds to insert a suitable weight coefficient inside the equation. A possible way to locate such regions is to study the eigenvalue problem associated to the aforementioned weighted equation. In the present paper we focus our attention essentially on the first eigenvalue and on its minimization in terms of the weight. We prove the existence of minimizing weights inside special classes and we try to describe them together with the corresponding eigenfunctions.

We report on a measurement of hard exclusive $π^0$ muoproduction on the proton by COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarised $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ beams of the CERN SPS im**ing on a liquid hydrogen target. From the average of the measured $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ cross sections, the virtual-photon proton cross section is determined as a function of the squared four-momentum transfer between initial and final proton in the range $0.08\,(\text{GeV/}c)^2 < |t| < 0.64\,(\text{GeV/}c)^2$. The average kinematics of the measurement are $\langle Q^2 \rangle =2.0\; {(\text{GeV}/c)^2}$, $\langle ν\rangle = 12.8\; {\text{GeV}}$, $\langle x_{Bj} \rangle = 0.093 $ and $\langle -t \rangle = 0.256\; {(\text{GeV}/c)^2} $. Fitting the azimuthal dependence reveals a combined contribution by transversely and longitudinally polarised photons of $(8.1 \ \pm \ 0.9_{\text{stat}}{}_{- \ 1.0}^{+ \ 1.1}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\,{\text{nb}}/{(\text{GeV}/c)^{2}}$, as well as transverse-transverse and longitudinal-transverse interference contributions of $(-6.0 \pm 1.3_{\text{stat}}{}_{- \ 0.7}^{+ \ 0.7}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\,{\text{nb}}/{(\text{GeV}/c)^{2}}$ and $(1.4 \pm 0.5_{\text{stat}}{}_{- \ 0.2}^{+ \ 0.3}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\,{\text{nb}}/{(\text{GeV}/c)^{2}}$, respectively. Our results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions. In the context of the phenomenological Goloskokov-Kroll model, the statistically significant transverse-transverse interference contribution constitutes clear experimental evidence for the chiral-odd GPD $\overline{E}_T$.

Context. Most massive stars are in binary or multiple systems. Several massive stars have been detected as doublelined spectroscopic binaries and among these, the OWN Survey has detected a non-negligible number whose components show very different spectral line broadening (i.e., projected rotational velocities). This fact raises a discussion about the contributing processes, such as angular-momentum transfer and tidal forces. Aims. We seek to constrain the physical and evolutionary status of one of such systems, the O+O binary HD 93343. Methods. We analyzed a series of high-resolution multiepoch optical spectra to determine the orbital parameters, projected rotational velocities, and evolutionary status of the system. Results. HD 93343 is a binary system comprised of two O7.5 Vz stars that each have minimum masses of approximately 22 Mo in a wide and eccentric orbit (e = 0.398$\pm$0.004; P=50.432$\pm$0.001 d). Both stars have very similar stellar parameters, and hence ages. As expected from the qualitative appearance of the combined spectrum of the system, however, these stars have very different projected rotational velocities (~65 and ~325 km/s, respectively). Conclusions. The orbits and stellar parameters obtained for both components seem to indicate that their youth and relative separation is enough to discard the effects of mass transfer and tidal friction. Thus, non-synchronization should be intrinsic to their formation.

Our proofs are based on the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension method combined with an Almgren type monotonicity formula. The transverse spin asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive leptoproduction of hadrons, when weighted with the hadron transverse momentum $P_T$, allow for the extraction of important transverse-momentum-dependent distribution functions. In particular, the weighted Sivers asymmetries provide direct information on the Sivers function, which is a leading-twist distribution that arises from a correlation between the transverse momentum of an unpolarised quark in a transversely polarised nucleon and the spin of the nucleon. Using the high-statistics data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration in 2010 with a transversely polarised proton target, we have evaluated two types of $P_T$-weighted Sivers asymmetries, which are both proportional to the product of the firsttransverse moment of the Sivers function and of the fragmentation function. The results are compared to the standard unweighted Sivers asymmetries and used to extract the first transverse moments of the Sivers distributions for $u$ and $d$ quarks.

The PWA results, which were obtained in 100 bins of three-pion mass, $0.5 < m_{3π} < 2.5$ GeV/$c^2$, and simultaneously in 11 bins of the reduced four-momentum transfer squared, $0.1 < t' < 1.0$ $($GeV$/c)^2$, are subjected to a resonance-model fit using Breit-Wigner amplitudes to simultaneously describe a subset of 14 selected waves using 11 isovector light-meson states with $J^{PC} = 0^{-+}$, $1^{++}$, $2^{++}$, $2^{-+}$, $4^{++}$, and spin-exotic $1^{-+}$ quantum numbers. The model contains the well-known resonances $π(1800)$, $a_1(1260)$, $a_2(1320)$, $π_2(1670)$, $π_2(1880)$, and $a_4(2040)$. In addition, it includes the disputed $π_1(1600)$, the excited states $a_1(1640)$, $a_2(1700)$, and $π_2(2005)$, as well as the resonancelike $a_1(1420)$. We measure the resonance parameters mass and width of these objects by combining the information from the PWA results obtained in the 11 $t'$ bins. We extract the relative branching fractions of the $ρ(770) π$ and $f_2(1270) π$ decays of $a_2(1320)$ and $a_4(2040)$, where the former one is measured for the first time. In a novel approach, we extract the $t'$ dependence of the intensity of the resonances and of their phases. The $t'$ dependence of the intensities of most resonances differs distinctly from the $t'$ dependence of the nonresonant components. For the first time, we determine the $t'$ dependence of the phases of the production amplitudes and confirm that the production mechanism of the Pomeron exchange is common to all resonances.

We report on the first measurement of exclusive single-photon muoproduction on the proton by COMPASS using 160 GeV/$c$ polarized $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ beams of the CERN SPS im**ing on a liquid hydrogen target. We determine the dependence of the average of the measured $μ^+$ and $μ^-$ cross sections for deeply virtual Compton scattering on the squared four-momentum transfer $t$ from the initial to the final final proton. The slope $B$ of the $t$-dependence is fitted with a single exponential function, which yields $B=(4.3 \ \pm \ 0.6_{\text{stat}}\_{- \ 0.3}^{+ \ 0.1}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}}) (\text{GeV}/c)^{-2}$. This result can be converted into an average transverse extension of partons in the proton, $\sqrt{\langle r_{\perp}^2 \rangle} = (0.58 \ \pm \ 0.04_{\text{stat}}\_{- \ 0.02}^{+ \ 0.01}\big\rvert_{\text{sys}})\text{fm}$. For this measurement, the average virtuality of the photon mediating the interaction is $\langle Q^2 \rangle = 1.8\,(\text{GeV/}c)^2$ and the average value of the Bjorken variable is $\langle x_{\text{Bj}} \rangle = 0.056$.

The K$^{-}$ over K$^{+}$ multiplicity ratio is measured in deep-inelastic scattering, for the first time for kaons carrying a large fraction $z$ of the virtual-photon energy. The data were obtained by the COMPASS collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar $^6$LiD target. The regime of deep-inelastic scattering is ensured by requiring $Q^2>1$ (GeV/$c)^2$ for the photon virtuality and $W>5$ GeV/$c^2$ for the invariant mass of the produced hadronic system. Kaons are identified in the momentum range from 12 GeV/$c$ to 40 GeV/$c$, thereby restricting the range in Bjorken-$x$ to $0.01<x<0.40$. The $z$-dependence of the multiplicity ratio is studied for $z>0.75$. For very large values of $z$, $i.e.$ $z>0.8$, we observe the kaon multiplicity ratio to fall below the lower limits expected from calculations based on leading and next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Also, the kaon multiplicity ratio shows a strong dependence on the missing mass of the single-kaon production process. This suggests that within the perturbative quantum chromodynamics formalism an additional correction may be required, which takes into account the phase space available for hadronisation.

How much information is added to the Review of Particle Physics when a new decay branching ratio of a hadron is measured and reported? This is quantifiable by Shannon's information entropy $S(i) =-\sum_{f}BR_{(i\longrightarrow f)}\log BR_{(i\longrightarrow f)}$ that takes as input the experimental branching ratios (BR) of the decay distribution of particle i.
It may be used at two levels, against the distribution of decay-channel probabilities, or against the distribution of individual quantum-state probabilities (integrating the phase space of those states provides the former). We illustrate the concept with some examples.

The results are based on data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN using muon beam energies of $160~{\rm GeV}$ and $200~{\rm GeV}$. The statistical precision is more than tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. In the whole range of $x$, the measured values of $A_1^{\rm p}$ and $g_1^{\rm p}$ are found to be positive. It is for the first time that spin effects are found at such low values of $x$.

A semi-inclusive measurement of charged hadron multiplicities in deep inelastic muon scattering off an isoscalar target was performed using data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN. The following kinematic domain is covered by the data: photon virtuality $Q^{2}>1$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$, invariant mass of the hadronic system $W > 5$ GeV/$c^2$, Bjorken scaling variable in the range $0.003 < x < 0.4$, fraction of the virtual photon energy carried by the hadron in the range $0.2 < z < 0.8$, square of the hadron transverse momentum with respect to the virtual photon direction in the range 0.02 (GeV/$c)^2 < P_{\rm{hT}}^{2} < 3$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. The multiplicities are presented as a function of $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$ in three-dimensional bins of $x$, $Q^2$, $z$ and compared to previous semi-inclusive measurements. We explore the small-$P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$ region, i.e. $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2} < 1$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$, where hadron transverse momenta are expected to arise from non-perturbative effects, and also the domain of larger $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$, where contributions from higher-order perturbative QCD are expected to dominate. The multiplicities are fitted using a single-exponential function at small $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$ to study the dependence of the average transverse momentum $\langle P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}\rangle$ on $x$, $Q^2$ and $z$. The power-law behaviour of the multiplicities at large $P_{\rm{hT}}^{2}$ is investigated using various functional forms. The fits describe the data reasonably well over the full measured range.

In the $J\!/\!ψπ^+π^-$ mass distribution we observe a signal with a statistical significance of 4.1 $σ$. Its mass and width are consistent with those of the $X(3872)$. The shape of the $π^+π^-$ mass distribution from the observed decay into $J\!/\!ψπ^+π^-$ shows disagreement with previous observations for $X(3872)$. The observed signal may be interpreted as a possible evidence of a new charmonium state. It could be associated with a neutral partner of $X(3872)$ with $C = -1$ predicted by a tetraquark model. The product of cross section and branching fraction of the decay of the observed state into $J\!/\!ψπ^+π^-$ is determined to be 71$\pm$28(stat)$\pm$39(syst) pb.

The first measurement of transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) process is reported. We use the CERN SPS 190 GeV/$c$, $π^{-}$ beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. Three azimuthal asymmetries giving access to different transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) are extracted using dimuon events with invariant mass between 4.3 GeV/$c^2$ and 8.5 GeV/$c^2$. The observed sign of the Sivers asymmetry is found to be consistent with the fundamental prediction of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) that the Sivers TMD PDFs extracted from DY have a sign opposite to the one extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data. We present two other asymmetries originating from the pion Boer-Mulders TMD PDFs convoluted with either the nucleon transversity or pretzelosity TMD PDFs. These DY results are obtained at a hard scale comparable to that of a recent COMPASS SIDIS measurement and hence allow unique tests of fundamental QCD universality predictions.

We consider the nonlinear nonlocal beam evolution equation introduced by Woinowsky- Krieger. We study the existence and behavior of periodic solutions: these are called nonlinear modes. Some solutions only have two active modes and we investigate whether there is an energy transfer between them. The answer depends on the geometry of the energy function which, in turn, depends on the amount of compression compared to the spatial frequencies of the involved modes. Our results are complemented with numerical experiments, overall, they give a complete picture of the instabilities that may occur in the beam. We expect these results to hold also in more complicated dynamical system

The Sivers function describes the correlation between the transverse spin of a nucleon and the transverse motion of its partons. It was extracted from measurements of the azimuthal asymmetry of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of leptons off transversely polarised nucleon targets, and it turned out to be non-zero for quarks. In this letter the evaluation of the Sivers asymmetry for gluons in the same process is presented. The analysis method is based on a Monte Carlo simulation that includes three hard processes: photon-gluon fusion, QCD Compton scattering and leading-order virtual-photon absorption process. The Sivers asymmetries of the three processes are simultaneously extracted using the LEPTO event generator and a neural network approach. The method is applied to samples of events containing at least two hadrons with large transverse momentum from the COMPASS data taken with a 160 GeV/$c$ muon beam scattered off transversely polarised deuterons and protons. With a significance of more than two standard deviations a negative value is obtained for the gluon Sivers asymmetry. The result of a similar analysis for a Collins-like asymmetry for gluons is consistent with zero.

Final results are presented from the inclusive measurement of deep-inelastic polarised-muon scattering on longitudinally polarised deuterons using a $^6$LiD target. The data were taken at $160~{\rm GeV}$ beam energy and the results are shown for the kinematic range $1~({\rm GeV}/c)^2 < Q^2 < 100~({\rm GeV}/c)^2$ in photon virtuality, $0.004<x<0.7$ in the Bjorken scaling variable and $W > 4~{\rm GeV}/c^2$ in the mass of the hadronic final state. The deuteron double-spin asymmetry $A_1^{\rm d}$ and the deuteron longitudinal-spin structure function $g_1^{\rm d}$ are presented in bins of $x$ and $Q^2$. Towards lowest accessible values of $x$, $g_1^{\rm d}$ decreases and becomes consistent with zero within uncertainties. The presented final $g_1^{\rm d}$ values together with the recently published final $g_1^{\rm p}$ values of COMPASS are used to again evaluate the Bjorken sum rule and perform the QCD fit to the $g_1$ world data at next-to-leading order of the strong coupling constant. In both cases, changes in central values of the resulting numbers are well within statistical uncertainties. The flavour-singlet axial charge $a_0$, {which is identified in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ renormalisation scheme with the total contribution of quark helicities to the nucleon spin}, is extracted from only the COMPASS deuteron data with negligible extrapolation uncertainty: $a_0 (Q^2 = 3~({\rm GeV}/c)^2) = 0.32 \pm 0.02_{\rm stat} \pm0.04_{\rm syst} \pm 0.05_{\rm evol}$. Together with the recent results on the proton spin structure function $g_1^{\rm p}$, the results on $g_1^{\rm d}$ constitute the COMPASS legacy on the measurements of $g_1$ through inclusive spin-dependent deep inelastic scattering.

PandaX-III (Particle And Astrophysical Xenon Experiment III) will search for the NLDBD of $^{136}$Xe at the China ** ** underground Laboratory (CJPL). In the first phase of the experiment, a high pressure gas Time Projection Chamber (TPC) will contain 200 kg, 90% $^{136}$Xe enriched gas operated at 10 bar. Fine pitch micro-pattern gas detector (Microbulk Micromegas) will be used at both ends of the TPC for the charge readout with a cathode in the middle. Charge signals can be used to reconstruct tracks of NLDBD events and provide good energy and spatial resolution. The detector will be immersed in a large water tank to ensure $\sim$5 m of water shielding in all directions. The second phase, a ton-scale experiment, will consist of five TPCs in the same water tank, with improved energy resolution and better control over backgrounds.

This allows for a future direct comparison of the nucleon transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions extracted from these two alternative measurements. Various two-dimensional kinematic dependences are presented for the azimuthal asymmetries induced by the Sivers transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution function. The integrated Sivers asymmetries are found to be positive with an accuracy that appears to be sufficient to test the sign change of the Sivers function predicted by Quantum Chromodynamics.

Single hadron azimuthal asymmetries of positive and negative hadrons produced in muon semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarised deuterons are determined using the 2006 COMPASS data and also combined all deuteron COMPASS data. For each hadron charge, the dependence of the azimuthal asymmetry on the hadron azimuthal angle $φ$ is obtained by means of a five-parameter fitting function that besides a $φ$-independent term includes four modulations predicted by theory: $\sinφ$, $\sin 2 φ$, $\sin 3φ$ and $\cosφ$. The amplitudes of the five terms have been extracted, first, for the hadrons in the whole available kinematic region. In further fits, performed for hadrons from a restricted kinematic region, the $φ$-dependence is determined as a function of one of three variables (Bjorken-$x$, fractional energy of virtual photon taken by the outgoing hadron and hadron transverse momentum), while disregarding the others. Except the $φ$-independent term, all the modulation amplitudes are very small, and no clear kinematic dependence could be observed within experimental uncertainties.

Exclusive production of $ω$ mesons was studied at the COMPASS experiment by scattering $160~\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c}$ muons off transversely polarised protons. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal asymmetries were measured in the range of photon virtuality $1~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2 < Q^2 < 10~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2$, Bjorken scaling variable $0.003 < x_{\mathit{Bj}} < 0.3$ and…

Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal asymmetries were measured in the range of photon virtuality $1~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2 < Q^2 < 10~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2$, Bjorken scaling variable $0.003 < x_{\mathit{Bj}} < 0.3$ and transverse momentum squared of the $ω$ meson $0.05~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2 < p_{T}^{2} < 0.5~(\mathrm{GeV}/\mathit{c})^2$. The measured asymmetries are sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip Generalised Parton Distributions (GPD) $E$ that are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks, the chiral-odd GPDs $H_{T}$ that are related to the transversity Parton Distribution Functions, and the sign of the $πω$ transition form factor. The results are compared to recent calculations of a GPD-based model.

Abstract:
Multiplicities of charged pions and unidentified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering were measured in bins of the Bjorken scaling variable $x$, the relative virtual-photon energy $y$ and the relative hadron energy $z$. Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar target ($^6$LiD). They cover the kinematic domain in the photon virtuality…

Data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration using a 160 GeV muon beam and an isoscalar target ($^6$LiD). They cover the kinematic domain in the photon virtuality $Q^2$ > 1(GeV/c$)^2$, $0.004 < x < 0.4$, $0.2 < z < 0.85$ and $0.1 < y < 0.7$. In addition, a leading-order pQCD analysis was performed using the pion multiplicity results to extract quark fragmentation functions.

Using a novel analysis technique, the gluon polarisation in the nucleon is re-evaluated using the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry measured in the cross section of semi-inclusive single-hadron muoproduction with photon virtuality $Q^2>1~({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/$c$ polarised muon beam im**ing on a polarised $^6$LiD target. By analysing the full range in hadron transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$, the different $p_{\rm T}$-dependences of the underlying processes are separated using a neural-network approach. In the absence of pQCD calculations at next-to-leading order in the selected kinematic domain, the gluon polarisation $Δg/g$ is evaluated at leading order in pQCD at a hard scale of $μ^2= \langle Q^2 \rangle = 3 ({\rm GeV}/c)^2$. It is determined in three intervals of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons, $x_{\rm g}$, covering the range $0.04 \!<\! x_{ \rm g}\! <\! 0.28$~ and does not exhibit a significant dependence on $x_{\rm g}$. The average over the three intervals, $\langle Δg/g \rangle = 0.113 \pm 0.038_{\rm (stat.)}\pm 0.036_{\rm (syst.)}$ at $\langle x_{\rm g} \rangle \approx 0.10$, suggests that the gluon polarisation is positive in the measured $x_{\rm g}$ range.
