The classification of phases and the detection of phase transitions are central and challenging tasks in diverse fields. Within physics, it relies on the identification of order parameters and the analysis of singularities in the free energy and its derivatives. Here, we propose an alternative framework to identify quantum phase transitions. Using the axial next-nearest neighbor Ising (ANNNI) model as a benchmark, we show how machine learning can detect three phases (ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, and a cluster of the antiphase with the floating phase). Employing supervised learning, we demonstrate the feasibility of transfer learning. Specifically, a machine trained only with nearest-neighbor interactions can learn to identify a new type of phase occurring when next-nearest-neighbor interactions are introduced. We also compare the performance of common classical machine learning methods with a version of the quantum nearest neighbors (QNN) algorithm.

Quantum algorithms have the potential to enhance machine learning across a variety of domains and applications. In this work, we show how quantum machine learning can be used to improve financial forecasting. First, we use classical and quantum Determinantal Point Processes to enhance Random Forest models for churn prediction, improving precision by almost 6%. Second, we design quantum neural network architectures with orthogonal and compound layers for credit risk assessment, which match classical performance with significantly fewer parameters. Our results demonstrate that leveraging quantum ideas can effectively enhance the performance of machine learning, both today as quantum-inspired classical ML solutions, and even more in the future, with the advent of better quantum hardware.

Gravity is wonderful. The main goal of this thesis is to explore and discuss two aspects of gravity -- two wonders, which illustrate the richness of the theoretical gravitational landscape: braneworlds and holography. Each one of these topics is the core idea of the two parts of which the thesis consists. We begin by presenting gravity as a geometrical theory, then discuss extra dimensions and braneworld scenarios, to motivate the following derivation of the effective Einstein Field Equations on the brane. Afterward, we introduce the Randall--Sundrum model and derive the Minimal Geometric Deformation (MGD) method and its extension (EMGD), which are later on constrained by the classical tests of General Relativity. After this, we discuss black hole thermodynamics and the basic features of the AdS spacetime and black holes in it. We then present the basics of linear response theory and hydrodynamics, and discuss the AdS/CFT duality and its methods, which are employed in the calculation of the shear viscosity-to-entropy density ratio in different gravitational backgrounds, whose result is used to constrain the parameters of generalized 4D and 5D black branes. The relationship between the membrane paradigm and AdS/CFT is also presented. This is followed by a discussion of generalized actions and the violation of the Kovtun--Son--Starinets bound. Afterward, we present the fluid/gravity correspondence as well as an alternative to it in the context of soft hairy horizons. We finish the presentation with a summary of the main results and concluding remarks

The fluid/gravity correspondence establishes how gravitational dynamics, as dictated by Einstein's field equations, are related to the fluid dynamics, governed by the relativistic Navier-Stokes equations. In this work the correspondence is extended, where the duality between incompressible fluids and gravitational backgrounds with soft hair excitations is implemented. This construction is set through appropriate boundary conditions to the gravitational background, leading to a correspondence between generalized incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and soft hairy horizons.

The solution of the Einstein-Hilbert action, with the Gibbons-Hawking term and a counter-term that eliminates eventual divergences, yields a partition function associated with the dual theory which allows the computation of the entropy, pressure and free energy, as state functions, in the canonical ensemble. AdS/CFT near-horizon methods are then implemented to compute the shear viscosity-to-entropy ratio, then restricting the range of the parameter that defines a family of deformed black branes.

The black hole quantum portrait, besides deriving a preciser phenomenological bound for the fluid brane tension, is then scrutinized from the point of view of the configurational entropy. It yields a range for the critical density of the EMGD BEC, whose configurational entropy has global minima suggesting the configurational stability of the EMGD BEC.

The extended minimal geometric deformation (EMGD) procedure, in the holographic membrane paradigm, is employed to model stellar distributions that arise upon self-interacting scalar glueball dark matter condensation. Such scalar glueballs are SU($N$) Yang-Mills hidden sectors beyond the Standard Model. Then, corrections to the gravitational wave radiation, emitted by SU($N$) EMGD dark glueball stars mergers, are derived, and their respective spectra are studied in the EMGD framework, due to a phenomenological brane tension with finite value. The bulk Weyl fluid that drives the EMGD is then proposed to be experimentally detected by enhanced windows at the eLISA and LIGO.
