In this paper we present spin-to-charge current conversion properties in the Weyl semimetal TaP by means of the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE) with the integration of this quantum material with the ferromagnetic metal Permalloy $(Py=Ni_{81}Fe_{19})$. The spin currents are generated in the Py layer by the spin pum** effect (SPE) from microwave-driven ferromagnetic resonance and are detected by a dc voltage along the TaP crystal, at room temperature. We observe a field-symmetric voltage signal without the contamination of asymmetrical lines due to spin rectification effects observed in studies using metallic ferromagnets. The observed voltage is attributed to spin-to-charge current conversion based on the IREE, made possible by the spin-orbit coupling induced intrinsically by the bulk band structure of Weyl semimetals. The measured IREE coefficient $λ_{IREE}=(0.30 \pm{0.01})$ nm is two orders of magnitude larger than in graphene and is comparable to or larger than the values reported for some metallic interfaces and for several topological insulators.

Using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we develop a framework to relate morphological properties and microscopic dynamics during island growth, coalescence, and initial formation of continuous heteroepitaxial films. The average island width is controlled by adatom mobility on the substrate. Subsequent evolution strongly depends on the Ehrlich-Schwöebel energy barrier $E_{ES}$ of the deposited material. As $E_{ES}$ decreases, islands becomes taller and their coalescence is delayed. For small islands and large $E_{ES}$, the global roughness increases as $W\sim{\text{thickness}}^{1/2}$ and the local roughness increases at short scales (apparent anomalous scaling) before and after island coalescence. If the islands are wide, $W$ may have a plateau for large $E_{ES}$ and has a maximum for small $E_{ES}$ when the islands coalesce. This framework is applied to atomic-force microscopy data of the initial stages of CdTe deposition on Kapton: a maximum of $W$ during island coalescence indicates negligible ES barrier, consistently with scaling properties of much thicker films, and the diffusion coefficient ${10}^{-7}{\text{--}}{10}^{-5}{\text{cm}}^2/{\text s}$ on the Kapton surface at $150\,^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ is estimated. Applications of the framework to other materials are suggested, in which the expected roles of ES barriers are highlighted.

The Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class is a paradigmatic example of universality in nonequilibrium phenomena, but clear experimental evidences of asymptotic 2D-KPZ statistics are still very rare, and far less understanding stems from its short-time behavior. We tackle such issues by analyzing surface fluctuations of CdTe films deposited on polymeric substrates, based on a huge spatio-temporal surface sampling acquired through atomic force microscopy. A \textit{pseudo}-steady state (where average surface roughness and spatial correlations stay constant in time) is observed at initial times, persisting up to deposition of $\sim 10^{4}$ monolayers. This state results from a fine balance between roughening and smoothening, as supported by a phenomenological growth model. KPZ statistics arises at long times, thoroughly verified by universal exponents, spatial covariance and several distributions. Recent theoretical generalizations of the Family-Vicsek scaling and the emergence of log-normal distributions during interface growth are experimentally confirmed. These results confirm that high vacuum vapor deposition of CdTe constitutes a genuine 2D-KPZ system, and expand our knowledge about possible substrate-induced short-time behaviors.

In this letter, we have constructed and experimentally investigated frustrated arrays of dipoles forming two-dimensional artificial spin ices with different lattice parameters (rectangular arrays with horizontal and vertical lattice spacings denoted by $a$ and $b$ respectively). Arrays with three different ratios $γ=a/b = \sqrt{2}$, $\sqrt{3}$ and $\sqrt{4}$ are studied. Theoretical calculations of low-energy demagnetized configurations for these same parameters are also presented. Experimental data for demagnetized samples confirm most of the theoretical results. However, the highest energy topology (doubly-charged monopoles) does not emerge in our theoretical model, while they are seen in experiments for large enough $γ$. Our results also insinuate that magnetic monopoles may be almost free in rectangular lattices with a critical ratio $γ= γ_{c} = \sqrt{3}$, supporting previous theoretical predictions.

Ferromagnetic vortices deliver robust out-of-plane magnetization at extremely small scales. Their handling and creation therefore has high potential to become a necessary ingredient for future data storage technologies in order to keep up with the pace of growing information density demands. In this study we show that by using one step nanolithography method, we are able to create ferromagnetic vortex lattices in thin nickel films. The necessary control of the magnetic stray field at the domain edges was achieved by actively modifying the ferromagnetic thin film anisotropic properties at nanometer scale. We present experimental evidence using ferromagnetic resonance and magnetoresistance measurements supporting simulations based on the theoretical prediction of the proclaimed vortex structures.

We report on the effect of substrate temperature (T) on both local structure and long-wavelength fluctuations of polycrystalline CdTe thin films deposited on Si(001). A strong T-dependent mound evolution is observed and explained in terms of the energy barrier to inter-grain diffusion at grain boundaries, as corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations. This leads to transitions from uncorrelated growth to a crossover from random-to-correlated growth and transient anomalous scaling as T increases. Due to these finite-time effects, we were not able to determine the universality class of the system through the critical exponents. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that this can be circumvented by analyzing height, roughness and maximal height distributions, which allow us to prove that CdTe grows asymptotically according to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation in a broad range of T. More important, one finds positive (negative) velocity excess in the growth at low (high) T, indicating that it is possible to control the KPZ non-linearity by adjusting the temperature.

In the hysteresis loop we notice the emergency of an anisotropy in the magnetization saturation and in the micromagnetic simulations, in the beginning of the hysteresis loop (relaxation), the formation of a vortex crystal array with vortices in diferent positions possessing random polarization and chirality. The crystal of vortices in this electrically connected sample could be most eficient than those observed in non-connected nanodiscs for current-driven or magnetic vortices switching by electric currents.

Scaling of surface fluctuations of polycrystalline CdTe/Si(100) films grown by hot wall epitaxy are studied. The growth exponent of surface roughness and the dynamic exponent of the auto-correlation function in the mound growth regime agree with the values of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) class. The scaled distributions of heights, local roughness, and extremal heights show remarkable collapse with those of the KPZ class, giving the first experimental observation of KPZ distributions in $2+1$ dimensions. Deviations from KPZ values in the long-time estimates of dynamic and roughness exponents are explained by spurious effects of multi-peaked coalescing mounds and by effects of grain shapes. Thus, this scheme for investigating universality classes of growing films advances over the simple comparison of scaling exponents.

The formation of mounded surfaces in epitaxial growth is attributed to the presence of barriers against interlayer diffusion in the terrace edges, known as Ehrlich-Schwoebel (ES) barriers. We investigate a model for epitaxial growth using a ES barrier explicitly dependent on the step height. Our model has an intrinsic topological step barrier even in the absence of an explicit ES barrier. We show that mounded morphologies can be obtained even for a small barrier while a self-affine growth, consistent with the Villain-Lai-Das Sarma equation, is observed in absence of an explicit step barrier. The mounded surfaces are described by a super-roughness dynamical scaling characterized by locally smooth (faceted) surfaces and a global roughness exponent $α>1$. The thin film limit is featured by surfaces with self-assembled three-dimensional structures having an aspect ratio (height/width) that may increase or decrease with temperature depending on the strength of step barrier.

Part of the analysis consisted of the estimation of the correlation length $ξ$ using the decay in the height-height correlation function. Afterwards, the dynamical exponent $z$ was determined using the scaling hypothesis $ξ\sim t^{1/z}$. In this Addendum, we show that the correlation lengths obtained by Mata \textit{et al.} provide a long wavelength coarsening exponent that does not correspond to the dynamical exponent $z$. We also show that the short wavelength coarsening exponent is consistent with the exponent $z$ obtained by Nascimento \textit{et al}. [arXiv:1101.1493] via generic dynamical scaling theory.

We apply the generic dynamical scaling theory (GDST) to the surfaces of CdTe polycrystalline films grown in glass substrates. The analysed data were obtained with a stylus profiler with an estimated resolution lateral resolution of $l_c=0.3 μ$m. Both real two-point correlation function and power spectrum analyses were done. We found that the GDST applied to the surface power spectra foresees faceted morphology in contrast with the self-affine surface indicated by the local roughness exponent found via the height-height correlation function. This inconsistency is explained in terms of convolution effects resulting from the finite size of the probe tip used to scan the surfaces. High resolution AFM images corroborates the predictions of GDST.

CdTe films grown on glass substrates covered by fluorine doped tin oxide by Hot Wall Epitaxy (HWE) were studied through the interface dynamical scaling theory. Direct measures of the dynamical exponent revealed an intrinsically anomalous scaling characterized by a global roughness exponent $α$ distinct from the local one (the Hurst exponent $H$), previously reported [Ferreira \textit{et al}., Appl. Phys. Lett. \textbf{88}, 244103 (2006)]. A variety of scaling behaviors was obtained with varying substrate temperature. In particular, a transition from a intrinsically anomalous scaling regime with $H\neα<1$ at low temperatures to a super-rough regime with $H\neα>1$ at high temperatures was observed. The temperature is a growth parameter that controls both the interface roughness and dynamical scaling exponents. Nonlocal effects are pointed as the factors ruling the anomalous scaling behavior.

This system, which follows the Volmer-Weber growth mode with nucleation of isolated 3D islands for less than one monolayer of evaporated material, was described by a peculiar behavior of the quantum dot (QD) size distributions. In this work, we proposed a kinetic deposition model to reproduce these new features. The model, which includes thermally activated diffusion and evaporation of CdTe, qualitatively reproduced the experimental QD size distributions. Moreover, the model predicts a transition from Stranski-Krastanow growth mode at lower temperatures to Volmer-Weber growth mode at higher ones characterized through the QD width distributions.
