An interesting approach to the cosmological coincidence problem is to allow dark matter and dark energy interact with each other also nongravitationally. We consider two general Ansätze for such an interaction and appraise their ability to address the coincidence problem. We determine the average accuracy required on the cosmic expansion rate data to distinguish interacting cosmological models from the conventional $Λ$CDM scenario. We find that among the planned surveys the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope has the best chance to detect an interaction, though at a low significance level. To unambiguously determine the existence of an interaction one must, therefore, combine the said expansion data with other probes.

A phenomenological attempt at alleviating the so-called coincidence problem is to allow the dark matter and dark energy to interact. By assuming a coupled quintessence scenario characterized by an interaction parameter $ε$, we investigate the precision in the measurements of the expansion rate $H(z)$ required by future experiments in order to detect a possible deviation from the standard $Λ$CDM model ($ε= 0$). We perform our analyses at two levels, namely: through Monte Carlo simulations based on $ε$CDM models, in which $H(z)$ samples with different accuracies are generated and through an analytic method that calculates the error propagation of $ε$ as a function of the error in $H(z)$. We show that our analytical approach traces simulations accurately and find that to detect an interaction {using $H(z)$ data only, these must reach an accuracy better than 1%.

Simple models of gravitational arcs are crucial to simulate large samples of these objects with full control of the input parameters. These models also provide crude and automated estimates of the shape and structure of the arcs, which are necessary when trying to detect and characterize these objects on massive wide area imaging surveys. We here present and explore the ArcEllipse, a simple prescription to create objects with shape similar to gravitational arcs. We also present PaintArcs, which is a code that couples this geometrical form with a brightness distribution and adds the resulting object to images. Finally, we introduce ArcFitting, which is a tool that fits ArcEllipses to images of real gravitational arcs. We validate this fitting technique using simulated arcs and apply it to CFHTLS and HST images of tangential arcs around clusters of galaxies. Our simple ArcEllipse model for the arc, associated to a Sérsic profile for the source, recovers the total signal in real images typically within 10%-30%. The ArcEllipse+Sérsic models also automatically recover visual estimates of length-to-width ratios of real arcs. Residual maps between data and model images reveal the incidence of arc substructure. They may thus be used as a diagnostic for arcs formed by the merging of multiple images. The incidence of these substructures is the main factor preventing ArcEllipse models from accurately describing real lensed systems.

In this work are computed analytical solutions for orbital motion on a background described by an Expanding Locally Anisotropic (ELA) metric ansatz. This metric interpolates between the Schwarzschild metric near the central mass and the Robertson-Walker metric describing the expanding cosmological background far from the central mass allowing for a fine-tuneable covariant parameterization of gravitational interactions corrections in between these two asymptotic limits. In particular it is shown that the decrease of the Sun's mass by radiation emission plus the General Relativity corrections due to the ELA metric background with respect to Schwarzschild backgrounds can be mapped to the reported yearly variation of the gravitational constant $\dot{G}$ through Kepler's third law. Based on the value of the heuristic fit corresponding to the more recent heliocentric ephemerides of the Solar System are derived bounds for the value of a constant parameter $α_0$ for the ELA metric as well as the maximal corrections to perihelion advance and orbital radii variation within this framework. Hence it is shown that employing the ELA metric as a functional covariant parameterization to model gravitational interactions corrections within the Solar System allows to maintain the measurement projection standards constant over time, specifically both the Astronomical Unit ($AU$) and the Gravitational constant ($G$). Also it is noted that the effect obtained is not homogeneous for all planetary orbits consistently with the diversity of estimates in the literature obtained assuming Schwarzschild backgrounds.

It is discussed the possibility of a fine-tuneable contribution to the two way Doppler acceleration either towards, either outwards the Sun for heliocentric distances above 20 AU by considering a background described by an Expanding Locally Anisotropic (ELA) metric. This metric encodes both the standard local Schwarzschild gravitational effects and the cosmological Universe expansion effects allowing simultaneously to fine-tune other gravitational effects at intermediate scales, which may be tentatively interpreted as a covariant parameterization of either cold dark matter either gravitational interaction corrections. Are derived bounds for the ELA metric functional parameter by considering the bounds on the deviation from standard General Relativity imposed by the current updated limits for the Pioneer anomaly, taking in consideration both the natural outgassing and on-board radiation pressure, resulting in an average Doppler acceleration outwards the Sun of a_p = +0.4^{+2.1}_{-2.0} x 10^{-10} (m/s^2). It is also computed the mass-energy density for the ELA metric within the bounds obtained and are discussed the respective contributions to the cosmological mass-energy density which, for compatibility with the Lambda-CDM model, are included in Omega_{CDM}.

In this article are computed magnetic solutions of Einstein Maxwell Chern-Simons theory coupled to a dilaton-like scalar field. These solutions are computed by applying a space-time duality suggested by the author to known electric solutions of the same theory. As a redundancy check for the space-time duality it is explicitly shown that the magnetic configurations obtained are, as expected, solutions of the equations of motion. The magnetic configurations have metric determinant $\sqrt{-g}\sim r^p$ for the range of the parameter $p\in]-\infty,+\infty[/\{-1\}$ and are interpreted either as magnetic string-like configurations, configurations driven by an externally applied magnetic field or cosmological-like solutions with background magnetic fields.

Considering an expanding locally anisotropic (ELA) metric with the Sun as central mass and the heuristic ansatz for the dimensionless functional exponent parameter 'alpha=3+alpha_2(r_1)(1-U_Sun)^2' with a linear ansatz 'alpha_2(r_1)=alpha_2^(2.0)+alpha_2^(2.1) r_1' above 20 AU the pioneer anomaly is fully accounted for as due to the blue-shift of the background space-time. For compatibility with orbital motion within the Solar system it is further considered a branch ansatz for which α_2(r_1)=0 below 20 AU. This construction reduces the physical acceleration correction above 20 AU down to ~10^(-14) m/s^2 outwards from the Sun such that orbital corrections to Neptune and Pluto are less notorious than when the full Pioneer acceleration is considered to be a gravitational acceleration. It is also discussed the effective mass-energy density distribution above 20 AU due to the background corrections, the respective equation of state ('-1 < w < -0.726') and the finite non-null total mass is computed by considering an upper cut-off for the functional parameter 'alpha'. Such effective extended configuration is tentatively interpreted as a cold dark matter distribution.

This model exhibits explicit planar P and T discrete symmetries being the Hall conductivity consistently a tensor and the Dirac quantization on the electric and magnetic coupling constants is equivalent to the quantization of magnetic flux. It is also discussed a thickening to 4-dimensions of the model with explicit 4-dimensional P violation which allows either for electric and magnetic charge separation, either for the Meissner effect. Although mathematically consistent, the electromagnetic field content for this model does not coincide with the standard Hall effect being present an extra orthogonal electric and longitudinal magnetic fields.

In this paper are discussed possible many body generalizations of the expanding locally anisotropic metric ansatz with respect to approximately Newtonian gravitational systems. This ansatz consistently describes local point-like matter distributions on the expanding Universe also allowing for a covariant parameterization of gravitational interactions at intermediate length scales.
As an example of applicability it is modeled a disk galaxy model matching the physical parameters of the galaxy UGC2885 and it is shown that, by fine-tuning the metric functional parameter, the flattening of the galaxy rotation curve is fully parameterized by this metric. In addition it is numerically computed the mass-energy density corrections due to the expanding anisotropic background and explicitly shown that although there are negative contributions within the galaxy plane the total mass-energy density is strictly positive both at the galaxy plane and outside the galaxy plane. As the functional parameter for this metric is an exponential factor is required a floating point precision of $250$ significant digits for root finding routines and $200$ significant digits to evaluate the effective mass-energy density rendering a final precision of the results presented above double precision ($16$ significant digits).
It is further shown that these results are consistent with the interpretation of the gravitational corrections as due to Dark Matter, in particular constituting a novel heuristic local parameterization for the Dark Matter distribution within the galaxy plane consistent with both local scale and cosmological scale physical laws which is useful to further investigate the local properties of Dark Matter.

For constant exponent 'alpha=alpha0=0' it is retrieved the isotropic McVittie (McV) metric and for 'alpha=alpha0=1' it is retrieved the locally anisotropic Cosmological-Schwarzschild (SCS) metric, both already discussed in the literature. However it is shown that only for constant exponent 'alpha=alpha0> 1' exists an event horizon at the SC radius 'r1=2GM/c^2' and only for 'alpha=alpha0>= 3' space-time is singularity free for this value of the radius. These bounds exclude the previous existing metrics, for which the SC radius is a naked extended singularity. In addition it is shown that for 'alpha=alpha0>5' space-time is approximately Ricci flat in a neighborhood of the event horizon such that the SC metric is a good approximation in this neighborhood. It is further shown that to strictly maintain the SC mass pole at the origin 'r1=0' without the presence of more severe singularities it is required a radial coordinate dependent correction to the exponent 'alpha(r1)=alpha0+alpha1 '2GM/(c^2 r1)' with a negative coefficient 'alpha1<0'. The energy-momentum density, pressures and equation of state are discussed.

This is acomplished maintaining space-time free of singularities except for the Schwarzschild mass pole at the origin as opposed to metrics already considered in the literature with the same purpose, namely the McVittie metric. The modified Newton law is analyzed and the static orbit solutions computed. It is concluded that the effects of expantion in the solar system are negligible, however depending on the metric parameter value, at galactic scales there is a significant deviation from the General Relativity Newton law which may contribute to dark matter effects allowing for a flattening of galaxy rotation curves.

We compute QCD corrections to QED calculations for vacuum polarization in background magnetic fields. Formally, the diagram for virtual $e\bar{e}$ loops is identical to the one for virtual $q\bar{q}$ loops. However due to confinement, or to the growth of $α_s$ as $p^2$ decreases, a direct calculation of the diagram is not allowed. At large $p^2$ we consider the virtual $q\bar{q}$ diagram, in the intermediate region we discuss the role of the contribution of quark condensates $\left< q\bar{q}\right>$ and at the low-energy limit we consider the $π^0$, as well as charged pion $π^+π^-$ loops. Although these effects seem to be out of the measurement accuracy of photon-photon laboratory experiments they may be relevant for $γ$-ray burst propagation. In particular, for emissions from the center of the galaxy (8.5 kpc), we show that the mixing between the neutral pseudo-scalar pion $π_0$ and photons renders a deviation from the power-law spectrum in the $TeV$ range. As for scalar quark condensates $\left< q\bar{q} right>$ and virtual $q\bar{q}$ loops are relevant only for very high radiation density $\sim 300 MeV/fm^3$ and very strong magnetic fields of order $\sim 10^{14} T$.

At variational level in the framework of dimensional reduced 'U_e(1)\times U_g(1)' electromagnetism it is considered an anyon Landau-Ginzburg Chern-Simons model for the fractional Hall effect. The collective gauge fields are due to pseudo-photons (...). We show that the model contains both magnetic vortexes due to the internal photons (interpreted as quasi-particles) and electric vortexes due to the internal pseudo-photons (interpreted as quasi-holes) that account for the anyon quantized magnetic flux and fractional electric charges, respectively. The effective magnetic flux is the only effective effect attributed to the standard internal photon which ensures compatibility between the pseudo nature of Laughlin's wave functions and macroscopical parity 'P' and time-inversion 'T' symmetries. In this way the model preserves these symmetries both at variational level and at the level of the electromagnetic equations. In particular holds the usual fractional Hall conductances with the Hall conductance '\hatσ_H' being a pseudo-scalar consistently with the electric Hall current equation. The negative energy contribution of quasi-holes to the Laughlin's wave function (...) is justified and the quantization of magnetic flux is directly equivalent to the Dirac's quantization condition applied to the coupling constants, or fundamental unit charges 'e' and 'g'. If our framework proves to be correct, quantization of magnetic flux may be the most direct evidence for Dirac's quantization condition. Our results also indicate that pseudo-photons electric vortex may give a theoretical justification for the electric potential between layers of bi-layer Hall systems.

It is considered a dimensional reduction of Ue(1)xUg(1) 3+1-dimensional electromagnetism with a gauge field (photon) and a pseudo-vector gauge field (pseudo-photon) to 2+1-dimensions. In the absence of boundary effects, the quantum structure is maintained, while when boundary effects are considered, as have been previously studied, a cross Chern-Simons term between both gauge fields is present, which accounts for topological effects and changes the quantum structure of the theory. Our construction maintains the dimensional reduced action invariant under parity (P) and time-inversion (T). We show that the theory has two massive degrees of freedom, corresponding to the longitudinal modes of the photon and of the pseudo-photon and briefly discuss the quantization procedures of the theory in the topological limit (wave functional quantization) and perturbative limit (an effective dynamical current theory), pointing out directions to solve the constraints and deal with the negative energy contributions from pseudo-photons. We recall that the physical interpretation of the fields in the planar system is new and is only meaningful in the context of Ue(1)xUg(1) electromagnetism. In this work it is shown that all the six electromagnetic vectorial fields components are present in the dimensional reduced theory and that, independently of the embedding of the planar system, can be described in terms of the two gauge fields only. As far as the author is aware it is the first time that such a construction is fully justified, thus allowing a full vectorial treatment at variational level of electromagnetism in planar systems.

We show that in the presence of external fields for which either $\dot{\vb{B}}^{\mathrm{ext}}\neq 0$ or $\nabla\times\vb{E}^{\mathrm{ext}}\neq 0$ it is not possible to derive the classical Maxwell equations from an action with only one gauge field. We suggest that one possible solution is to consider a second physical pseudo-vector gauge field $C$. The action for this theory is originally motivated by the inclusion of magnetic monopoles. These particles play no role in this work and our argument is only based in, that the violation of the Bianchi identities, cannot be accounted at the action level with only the standard gauge field. We give a particular example for a periodic rotating external magnetic field. Our construction holds that at classical level both the vector and pseudo-vector gauge fields $A$ and $C$ are regular. We compare pseudo-photon with paraphoton (graviphoton) theories concluding that, besides the mechanisms of gauge symmetry breaking already studied, the Bianchi identities violation are a crucial difference between both theories. We also show that, due to Dirac's quantization condition, at quantum field theory level the effects due to pseudo-photons and photons can be distinguished by the respective contributions to the magnetic moment of fermions and vacuum polarization. These effects may be relevant in astrophysical environments, namely close and inside neutron stars and magnetars. [Erratum: The construction in this work must, at most, be considered as a conceptual system or toy model. Are discussed systems where the results may have relevance.]

The frequency shifts are integer multiples $\pm ω_0 n$ of the magnetic field angular frequency rotation $ω_0=2πν_m$ and the several modes $n$ are coupled to the nearest harmonics $n\pm 1$. This is a new effect due to QED vacuum fluctuations, not exploit before, that can explain, both qualitatively and quantatively, the recent experimental results of the PVLAS collaboration without the need of a low mass intermediate particle, hence dismiss the recent claim of the discovery of the axion. [Erratum: The PVLAS signal cannot be explained by this mechanism.]

A first duality map originally suggested by Kogan for static charged solutions is extended to stationary rotating space-times and are suggested two new space-time dualities maps. The three dualities complete a close duality web. It is also shown that in $3+1$-dimensions these dualities are only possible for systems which exhibit non-projected cylindrical symmetry and are not related to the standard electromagnetic duality of Maxwell equations which acts on the physical fields and charges. Generalization to $N$-form theories in higher dimensional space-times is briefly discussed.

We derive the effective masses for photons in unmagnetized plasma waves using a quantum field theory with two vector fields (gauge fields). In order to properly define the quantum field degrees of freedom we re-derive the classical wave equations on light-front gauge. This is needed because the usual scalar potential of electromagnetism is, in quantum field theory, not a physical degree of freedom that renders negative energy eigenstates. We also consider a background local fluid metric that allows for a covariant treatment of the problem. The different masses for the longitudinal (plasmon) and transverse photons are in our framework due to the local fluid metric. We apply the mechanism of mass generation by gauge symmetry breaking recently proposed by the authors by giving a non-trivial vacuum-expectation-value to the second vector field (gauge field). The Debye length $λ_D$ is interpreted as an effective compactification length and we compute an explicit solution for the large gauge transformations that correspond to the specific mass eigenvalues derived here. Using an usual quantum field theory canonical quantization we obtain the usual results in the literature. Although none of these ingredients are new to physicist, as far as the authors are aware it is the first time that such constructions are applied to Plasma Physics. Also we give a physical interpretation (and realization) for the second vector field in terms of the plasma background in terms of known physical phenomena.
Addendum: It is given a short proof that equation (10) is wrong, therefore equations (12-17) are meaningless. The remaining results are correct being generic derivations for nonmagnetized plasmas derived in a covariant QFT framework.

It is considered a mechanism of dynamical symmetry breaking for extended Ue(1)xUg(1) containing, one vector gauge field 'A' (photon) and one pseudo-vector gauge field 'C' (pseudo-photon). By choosing a particular solution of the equations of motion we obtain a functional description of either field in terms of the other one. In this way we obtain non-trivial configurations 'C=C(A)' or 'A=A(C)' such that, in the effective broken theories containing only one gauge field, the usual field discontinuities in the presence of both electric and magnetic monopoles are absent. These fields regularity is achieved through corrections, inherited from the unbroken theory, to the standard definitions of electromagnetic fields and four-currents. Based in these results we also demonstrate non-triviality of the unbroken theory, in the presence of both electric and magnetic four-currents, there are no trivial solutions compatible with the equations of motion for both fields. Moreover we demonstrate that, although in complete agreement with the Maxwell equations, extended 'Ue(1)xUg(1)' electromagnetism is not equivalent to the standard variational 'U(1)' Maxwell electromagnetism. We further show that the unbroken theory is invariant under a combination of Hodge dualities that has as self-dual point the field configuration corresponding to the zero-field equation. In addition this condition has the particularity of being the only configuration compatible with the mechanism of dynamical symmetry breaking proposed here that is also gauge invariant in the unbroken theory. These characteristics justify the zero-field equation as being a preferred configuration.

We extend the work of Mello et al. based in Cabbibo and Ferrari concerning the description of electromagnetism with two gauge fields from a variational principle, i.e. an action. We provide a systematic independent derivation of the allowed actions which have only one magnetic and one electric physical fields and are invariant under the discrete symmetries $P$ and $T$. We conclude that neither the Lagrangian, nor the Hamiltonian, are invariant under the electromagnetic duality rotations. This agrees with the weak-strong coupling mixing characteristic of the duality due to the Dirac quantization condition providing a natural way to differentiate dual theories related by the duality rotations (the energy is not invariant). Also the standard electromagnetic duality rotations considered in this work violate both $P$ and $T$ by inducing Hopf terms (theta terms) for each sector and a mixed Maxwell term. The canonical structure of the theory is briefly addressed and the 'magnetic' gauge sector is interpreted as a ghost sector.

We study electric stationary radial symmetric classical solutions of the U(1) Einstein Maxwell Chern-Simons theory coupled to a gravitational massless scalar field with a cosmological constant in 2+1 dimensions. Generic aspects of the theory are discussed at an introductory level. We study solutions for both negative sign (standard) and positive sign (ghost) of the gauge sector concluding that although the expressions for the solutions are the same, the constants as well as the physics change significantly. It is found a rotating electric point particle. For the standard sign and specific values of the parameters corresponding to solutions with positive mass the singularity is dressed (in the sense that itself constitutes an horizon). The space-time curvatures can be both positive or negative depending on the dominance of the scalar or topologically massive matter. The Chern-Simons term is responsible for interesting features, besides only allowing for rotating solutions, it imposes restrictive bounds on the cosmological constant $Λ$ such that it belongs to a positive interval and is switch on and off by the topological mass $m^2$. Furthermore the charge, angular momentum and mass of the particle solution are expressed uniquely as functions of the ratio between the cosmological constant and the topological mass squared $x=Λ/m^2$. The main drawback of our particle solution is that the mass is divergent. Our background is a rotating flat space without angular deficit. We briefly discuss parity and time-inversion violation by the Chern-Simons term which is explicit in the solutions obtained, their angular momentum only depends on the relative sign between the Chern-Simons term and the Maxwell term. Trivial solutions are briefly studied holding non-singular extended configurations.

It is shown how two-dimensional states corresponding to D-branes arise in orbifolds of topologically massive gauge and gravity theories. Brane vertex operators naturally appear in induced worldsheet actions when the three-dimensional gauge theory is minimally coupled to external charged matter and the orbifold relations are carefully taken into account. Boundary states corresponding to D-branes are given by vacuum wavefunctionals of the gauge theory in the presence of the matter, and their various constraints, such as the Cardy condition, are shown to arise through compatibility relations between the orbifold charges and bulk gauge invariance. We show that with a further conformally-invariant coupling to a dynamical massless scalar field theory in three dimensions, the brane tension is naturally set by the bulk mass scales and arises through dynamical mechanisms. As an auxilliary result, we show how to describe string descendent states in the three-dimensional theory through the construction of gauge-invariant excited wavefunctionals.

It is built a map between an Abelian Topological Quantum Field Theory, $2+1D$ compact U(1) gauge Maxwell Chern-Simons Theory and the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics Azbel-Hofstadter model of Bloch electrons. The $U_q(sl_2)$ quantum group and the magnetic translations group of the Azbel-Hofstadter model correspond to discretized subgroups of U(1) with linear gauge parameters. The magnetic monopole confining and condensate phases in the Topological Quantum Field Theory are identified with the extended (energy bands) and localized (gaps) phases of the Bloch electron. The magnetic monopole condensate is associated, at the nonrelativistic level, with gravitational white holes due to deformed classical gauge fields. These gravitational solutions render the existence of finite energy pure magnetic monopoles possible. This mechanism constitutes a dynamical symmetry breaking which regularizes the solutions on those localized phases allowing physical solutions of the Shrödinger equation which are chains of electron filaments connecting several monopole-white holes. To test these results would be necessary a strong external magnetic field $B\sim 5 T$ at low temperature $T<1 K$. To be accomplished, it would test the existence of magnetic monopoles and classical gravity to a scale of $\sim 10^{-15}$ \textit{meters}, the dimension of the monopole-white hole. A proper discussion of such experiment is out of the scope of this theoretical work.

The orbifold operations are constructed by gauging the discrete symmetries of the bulk three-dimensional field theory. Multi-loop bosonic string vacuum amplitudes are thereby computed as bulk correlation functions of the gauge theory. It is shown that the three-dimensional correlators naturally reproduce twisted and untwisted sectors in the case of closed worldsheet orbifolds, and Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions in the case of open ones. The bulk wavefunctions are used to explicitly construct the characters of the underlying extended Kac-Moody group for arbitrary genus. The correlators for both the original theory and its orbifolds give the expected modular invariant statistical sums over the characters.

We present phase diagrams of the Harper map, which is equivalent to the problem of Bloch electrons in a uniform magnetic field (Azbel-Hofstadter model). We consider the cases where the magnetic flux $ω$ assumes either the continued fraction approximations towards the golden mean or the golden mean itself. The phase diagrams for rational values of $ω$ show a finite number of Arnol'd tongues of localized electronic states with rational winding numbers and regions of extended phases in between them. For the particular case of $ω= \frac{\sqrt{5}-1}{2}$, we find an infinite number of Arnol'd tongues of localized phases with extended phases in between. In this case, the study of the winding number gives rise to a Golden Staircase, where the plateaux represent localized phases with winding numbers equal to sums of powers of the golden mean. We also present evidence of the existence of an infinite number of strange nonchaotic attractors for $ε=1$ in points analogous to critical points in the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the water.
