This paper revisits the Neonatal Convolutional Neural Network (N-CNN) by optimizing its hyperparameters and evaluating how they affect its classification metrics, explainability and reliability, discussing their potential impact in clinical practice. We have chosen hyperparameters that do not modify the original N-CNN architecture, but mainly modify its learning rate and training regularization. The optimization was done by evaluating the improvement in F1 Score for each hyperparameter individually, and the best hyperparameters were chosen to create a Tuned N-CNN. We also applied soft labels derived from the Neonatal Facial Coding System, proposing a novel approach for training facial expression classification models for neonatal pain assessment. Interestingly, while the Tuned N-CNN results point towards improvements in classification metrics and explainability, these improvements did not directly translate to calibration performance. We believe that such insights might have the potential to contribute to the development of more reliable pain evaluation tools for newborns, aiding healthcare professionals in delivering appropriate interventions and improving patient outcomes.

It has been recently proposed a modification of the Skyrme model which admits an exact self-dual sector by the introduction of six scalar fields assembled in a symmetric, positive and invertible 3x3 matrix h. In this paper we study soft manners of breaking the self-duality of that model. The crucial observation is that the self-duality equations impose distinct conditions on the three eigenvalues of h, and on the three fields lying in the orthogonal matrix that diagonalizes h. We keep the self-duality equations for the latter, and break those equations associated to the eigenvalues. We perform the breaking by the addition of kinetic and potential terms for the h-fields, and construct numerical solutions using the gradient flow method to minimize the static energy. It is also shown that the addition of just a potential term proportional to the determinant of h, leads to a model with an exact self-dual sector, and with self-duality equations differing from the original ones by just an additional coupling constant.

We introduce a novel quadratic unconstrained binary optimization (QUBO) formulation for a classical problem in electrical engineering -- the optimal reconfiguration of distribution grids. For a given graph representing the grid infrastructure and known nodal loads, the problem consists in finding the spanning tree that minimizes the total link ohmic losses. A set of constraints is initially defined to impose topologically valid solutions. These constraints are then converted to a QUBO model as penalty terms. The electrical losses terms are finally added to the model as the objective function to minimize. In order to maximize the performance of solution searching with classical solvers, with hybrid quantum-classical solvers and with quantum annealers, our QUBO formulation has the goal of being very efficient in terms of variables usage. A standard 33-node test network is used as an illustrative example of our general formulation. Model metrics for this example are presented and discussed. Finally, the optimal solution for this example was obtained and validated through comparison with the optimal solution from an independent method.

Volume conductor problems in cerebral electrophysiology and bioimpedance do not have analytical solutions for nontrivial geometries and require a 3D model of the head and its electrical properties for solving the associated PDEs numerically. Ideally, the model should be made with patient-specific information. In clinical practice, this is not always the case and an average head model is often used. Also, the electrical properties of the tissues might not be completely known due to natural variability. The objective of this work is to develop a 4D (3D+T) statistical anatomical atlas of the electrical properties of the upper part of the human head for cerebral electrophysiology and bioimpedance applications. The atlas is an important tool for in silico studies on cerebral circulation and electrophysiology that require statistically consistent data, e.g., machine learning, sensitivity analyses, and as a benchmark to test inverse problem solvers. The atlas was constructed based on MRI images of human individuals and comprises the electrical properties of the main internal structures and can be adjusted for specific electrical frequencies. The proposed atlas also comprises a time-varying model of arterial brain circulation, based on the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation in the main arteries and their vascular territories. The atlas was successfully used to simulate electrical impedance tomography measurements indicating the necessity of signal-to-noise between 100 and 125dB to identify vascular changes due to the cardiac cycle, corroborating previous studies.

Self-duality is a very important concept in the study and applications of topological solitons in many areas of Physics. The rich mathematical structures underlying it lead, in many cases, to the development of exact and non-perturbative methods. We present a generalization of the Yang-Mills-Higgs system by the introduction of scalar fields assembled in a symmetric and invertible matrix h of the same dimension as the gauge group. The coupling of such new fields to the gauge and Higgs fields is made by replacing the Killing form, in the contraction of the group indices, by the matrix h in the kinetic term for the gauge fields, and by its inverse in the Higgs field kinetic term. The theory is conformally invariant in the three dimensional space R^3. An important aspect of the model is that for practically all configurations of the gauge and Higgs fields the new scalar fields adjust themselves to solve the modified self-duality equations. We construct solutions using a spherically symmetric ansätz and show that the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole becomes a self-dual solution of such modified Yang-Mills-Higgs system. We use an ansätz based on the conformal symmetry to construct vacuum solutions presenting non-trivial toroidal magnetic fields.

The low energy regime of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) presents enormous challenges due to its large coupling. Effective field theories, like the Skyrme model, are useful approaches to study properties of strong interaction at hadronic scales. We propose a Skyrme-type model with a self-dual sector and that treats the density of the baryonic charge as a self-interacting fluid. The dynamics reduces to Coleman's false vacuum problem for a scalar field that is a fractional power of that density. The main result is that such a Skyrme-type model is the first one to reproduce, with good accuracy, the experimental values of radii and binding energies for a very wide range of the mass number. The robust and simple properties of the model lead to many possible generalizations with implications not only in nuclear physics but also in other areas of Physics.

However, despite their performance, DL methods do not learn the semantics of the words that are being used to describe a scene, making it difficult to spot incorrect words used in captions or to interchange words that have similar meanings. This work proposes a combination of DL methods for object detection and natural language processing to validate image's captions. We test our method in the FOIL-COCO data set, since it provides correct and incorrect captions for various images using only objects represented in the MS-COCO image data set. Results show that our method has a good overall performance, in some cases similar to the human performance.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (or xAI) has become an important research topic in the fields of Machine Learning and Deep Learning. In this paper, we propose a Genetic Programming (GP) based approach, named Genetic Programming Explainer (GPX), to the problem of explaining decisions computed by AI systems. The method generates a noise set located in the neighborhood of the point of interest, whose prediction should be explained, and fits a local explanation model for the analyzed sample. The tree structure generated by GPX provides a comprehensible analytical, possibly non-linear, symbolic expression which reflects the local behavior of the complex model. We considered three machine learning techniques that can be recognized as complex black-box models: Random Forest, Deep Neural Network and Support Vector Machine in twenty data sets for regression and classifications problems. Our results indicate that the GPX is able to produce more accurate understanding of complex models than the state of the art. The results validate the proposed approach as a novel way to deploy GP to improve interpretability.

We study a recently proposed modification of the Skyrme model that possesses an exact self-dual sector leading to an infinity of exact Skyrmion solutions with arbitrary topological (baryon) charge. The self-dual sector is made possible by the introduction, in addition to the usual three SU(2) Skyrme fields, of six scalar fields assembled in a symmetric and invertible three dimensional matrix h. The action presents quadratic and quartic terms in derivatives of the Skyrme fields, but instead of the group indices being contracted by the SU(2) Killing form, they are contracted with the h-matrix in the quadratic term, and by its inverse on the quartic term. Due to these extra fields the static version of the model, as well as its self-duality equations, are conformally invariant on the three dimensional space R^3. We show that the static and self-dual sectors of such a theory are equivalent, and so the only non-self-dual solution must be time dependent. We also show that for any configuration of the Skyrme SU(2) fields, the h-fields adjust themselves to satisfy the self-duality equations, and so the theory has plenty of non-trivial topological solutions. We present explicit exact solutions using a holomorphic rational ansatz, as well as a toroidal ansatz based on the conformal symmetry. We point to possible extensions of the model that break the conformal symmetry as well as the self-dual sector, and that can perhaps lead to interesting physical applications.

Some agents are also connected to a hub, or master node, who has preferential values (or orientation). The role of master node is to persuade some individuals to follow a specific orientation, subject to a probability of successful persuasion. The connections between master node and the network society are quenched in disorder. Despite its simplicity, we found a phase transition from disorder to order for three different control parameters. We also discuss how this model may be useful as a framework to study the spread of morality, innovation, opinion formation and consensus. Is important to recall the route from disorder to order in social systems still a great challenge. We hope to contribute with a novel approach to model a this issues.

The goal of this work is to investigate the automated solution of this kind of puzzles adapting an algorithm that combines Answer Set Programming (ASP) with Markov Decision Process (MDP), algorithm oASP(MDP), to use heuristics accelerating the learning process. ASP is applied to represent the domain as an MDP, while a Reinforcement Learning algorithm (Q-Learning) is used to find the optimal policies. In this work, the heuristics were obtained from the solution of relaxed versions of the puzzles. Experiments were performed on deterministic, non-deterministic and non-stationary versions of the puzzles. Results show that the proposed approach can accelerate the learning process, presenting an advantage when compared to the non-heuristic versions of oASP(MDP) and Q-Learning.

We analyse in detail BPS systems involving 2 interacting Sine-Gordon like fields, both when one of them has a kink solution and the second one either a kink or an antikink solution. We take their solitonic static solutions and use them as initial conditions for their evolution in Lorentz covariant versions of such models. We send these structures towards themselves and find that when they interact weakly they can pass through each other with a phase shift which is related to the strength of their interaction. When they interact strongly they repel and reflect on each other. We use the method of a modified gradient flow in order to visualize the solutions in the space of fields.

We construct self-dual sectors for scalar field theories on a $(2N+2)$-dimensional Minkowski space-time with target space being the $2N+1$-dimensional sphere $S^{2N+1}$. The construction of such self-dual sectors is made possible by the introduction of an extra functional on the action that renders the static energy and the self-duality equations conformally invariant on the $(2N+1)$-dimensional spatial submanifold. The conformal and target space symmetries are used to build an ansatz that leads to an infinite number of exact self-dual solutions with arbitrary values of the topological charge. The five dimensional case is discussed in detail where it is shown that two types of theories admit self dual sectors. Our work generalizes the known results in the three-dimensional case that leads to an infinite set of self-dual Skyrmion solutions.

We use the SU(2) 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole configuration, and its BPS version, to test the integral equations of the Yang-Mills theory. Those integral equations involve two (complex) parameters which do not appear in the differential Yang-Mills equations, and if they are considered to be arbitrary it then implies that non-abelian gauge theories (but not abelian ones) possess an infinity of integral equations. For static monopole configurations only one of those parameters is relevant. We expand the integral Yang-Mills equation in a power series of that parameter and show that the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopole and its BPS version satisfy the integral equations obtained in first and second order of that expansion. Our results points to the importance of exploring the physical consequences of such an infinity of integral equations on the global properties of the Yang-Mills theory.

We investigate the quasi-integrability properties of various deformations of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, depending on two parameters $\varepsilon_1$ and $\varepsilon_2$, which include among them the regularized long-wave (RLW) and modified regularized long-wave (mRLW) equations. We show, using analytical and numerical methods, that the charges, constructed from a deformation of the zero curvature equation for the KdV equation, are asymptotically conserved for various values of the deformation parameters. By that we mean that, despite the fact that the charges do vary in time during the scattering of solitons, they return after the scattering to the same values they had before it. That property was tested numerically for the scattering of two and three solitons, and analytically for the scattering of two solitons in the mRLW theory ($\varepsilon_2=\varepsilon_1=1$). We also show that the Hirota method leads to analytical one-soliton solutions of our deformed equation for $\varepsilon_1 = 1$, and any value of $\varepsilon_2$. We also mention some properties of soliton-radiation interactions seen in some of our simulations.

This paper presents a combination of Markov Decision Processes (MDP) with Answer Set Programming (ASP), named {\em Online ASP for MDP} (oASP(MDP)), which is a method capable of constructing the set of domain states while the agent interacts with a changing environment. oASP(MDP) updates previously obtained policies, learnt by means of Reinforcement Learning (RL), using rules that represent the domain changes observed by the agent. These rules represent a set of domain constraints that are processed as ASP programs reducing the search space. Results show that oASP(MDP) is capable of finding solutions for problems in non-stationary domains without interfering with the action-value function approximation process.

We propose a modification of the Skyrme model that supports a self-dual sector possessing exact non-trivial finite energy solutions. The action of such a theory possesses the usual quadratic and quartic terms in field derivatives, but the couplings of the components of the Maurer-Cartan form of the Skyrme model is made by a non-constant symmetric matrix, instead of the usual Killing form of the SU(2) Lie algebra. The introduction of such a matrix make the self-duality equations conformally invariant in three space dimensions, even though it may break the global internal symmetries of the original Skyrme model. For the case where that matrix is proportional to the identity we show that the theory possesses exact self-dual Skyrmions of unity topological charges.

Non-stationary domains, where unforeseen changes happen, present a challenge for agents to find an optimal policy for a sequential decision making problem. This work investigates a solution to this problem that combines Markov Decision Processes (MDP) and Reinforcement Learning (RL) with Answer Set Programming (ASP) in a method we call ASP(RL). In this method, Answer Set Programming is used to find the possible trajectories of an MDP, from where Reinforcement Learning is applied to learn the optimal policy of the problem. Results show that ASP(RL) is capable of efficiently finding the optimal solution of an MDP representing non-stationary domains.

We introduce a Skyrme type model with the target space being the 3-sphere S^3 and with an action possessing, as usual, quadratic and quartic terms in field derivatives. The novel character of the model is that the strength of the couplings of those two terms are allowed to depend upon the space-time coordinates. The model should therefore be interpreted as an effective theory, such that those couplings correspond in fact to low energy expectation values of fields belonging to a more fundamental theory at high energies. The theory possesses a self-dual sector that saturates the Bogomolny bound leading to an energy depending linearly on the topological charge. The self-duality equations are conformally invariant in three space dimensions leading to a toroidal ansatz and exact self-dual Skyrmion solutions. Those solutions are labelled by two integers and, despite their toroidal character, the energy density is spherically symmetric when those integers are equal and oblate or prolate otherwise.

That result is corroborated by the analysis through distribution theory, of the two types of magnetic fields relevant for the local and global properties of the Wu-Yang solution. The subtlety lies on the fact that with the non-vanishing magnetic point source required by the Yang-Mills integral equations, the Wu-Yang monopole configuration does not violate, in the sense of distribution theory, the differential Bianchi identity.

We consider deformations of the $SU(3)$ Affine Toda theory (AT) and investigate the integrability properties of the deformed theories. We find that for some special deformations all conserved quantities change to being conserved only asymptotically, {\it i.e.} in the process of the scattering of two solitons these charges do vary in time, but they return, after the scattering, to the values they had prior to the scattering. This phenomenon, which we have called quasi-integrability, is related to special properties of the two-soliton solutions under space-time parity transformations. Some properties of the AT solitons are discussed, especially those involving interesting static multi-soliton solutions. We support our analytical studies with detailed numerical ones in which the time evolution has been simulated by the 4th order Runge-Kutta method. We find that for some perturbations the solitons repel and for the others they form a quasi-bound state. When we send solitons towards each other they can repel when they come close together with or without `flip**' the fields of the model. The solitons radiate very little and appear to be stable. These results support the ideas of quasi-integrability, {\it i.e.} that many effects of integrability also approximately hold for the deformed models.

We evaluate the gauge invariant, dynamically conserved charges, recently obtained from the integral form of the Yang-Mills equations, for the BPS multi-dyon solutions of a Yang-Mills-Higgs theory associated to any compact semi-simple gauge group G. Those charges are shown to correspond to the eigenvalues of the next-to-leading term of the asymptotic form of the Higgs field at spatial infinity, and so coinciding with the usual topological charges of those solutions. Such results show that many of the topological charges considered in the literature are in fact dynamical charges, which conservation follows from the global properties of classical Yang-Mills theories encoded into their integral dynamical equations. The conservation of those charges can not be obtained from the differential form of Yang-Mills equations.

It has been shown recently that deformations of some integrable field theories in (1+1)-dimensions possess an infinite number of charges that are asymptotically conserved in the scattering of soliton like solutions. Such charges are not conserved in time and they do vary considerably during the scattering process, however they all return in the remote future (after the scattering) to the values they had in the remote past (before the scattering). Such non-linear phenomenon was named quasi-integrability, and it seems to be related to special properties of the solutions under a space-time parity transformation. In this paper we investigate, analytically and numerically, such phenomenon in the context of deformations of the integrable Bullough-Dodd model. We find that a special class of two-soliton like solutions of such deformed theories do present an infinite number of asymptotically conserved charges.

We report analytical and numerical results on breather-like field configurations in a theory which is a deformation of the integrable sine-Gordon model in (1+1) dimensions. The main motivation of our study is to test the ideas behind the recently proposed concept of quasi-integrability, which emerged from the observation that some field theories present an infinite number of quantities which are asymptotically conserved in the scattering of solitons, and periodic in time in the case of breather-like configurations. Even though the mechanism responsible for such phenomena is not well understood yet, it is clear that special properties of the solutions under a space-time parity transformation play a crucial role. The numerical results of the present paper give support for the ideas on quasi-integrability, and it is found that extremely long-lived breather configurations satisfy these parity properties. We also report on a mechanism, particular to the theory studied here, that favours the existence of long lived breathers even in cases of significant deformations of the sine-Gordon potential.

We show that certain field theory models, although non-integrable according to the usual definition of integrability, share some of the features of integrable theories for certain configurations. Here we discuss our attempt to define a "quasi-integrable theory", through a concrete example: a deformation of the (integrable) sine-Gordon potential. The techniques used to describe and define this concept are both analytical and numerical. The zero-curvature representation and the abelianisation procedure commonly used in integrable field theories are adapted to this new case and we show that they produce asymptotically conserved charges that can then be observed in the simulations of scattering of solitons.

The action of the model contains a quadratic kinetic term plus a quartic term which is the same as that of the Skyrme-Faddeev model. The novelty of the model is that it possess a first order Bogomolny type equation whose solutions automatically satisfy the second order Euler-Lagrange equations. It also possesses a lower bound on the static energy which is saturated by the Bogomolny solutions. Such Bogomolny equation is equivalent to the so-called force free equation used in plasma and solar Physics, and which possesses large classes of solutions. An old result due to Chandrasekhar prevents the existence of finite energy solutions for the force free equation on the entire tridimensional space R^3. We construct new exact finite energy solutions to the Bogomolny equations for the case where the space is the three-sphere S^3, using toroidal like coordinates.

We point out that this fact may be understood as a simple consequence of an appropriately generalised notion of self-duality. We show that this self-duality framework enables us to generalize to higher dimensions the construction of new solitons from already known solutions. By performing simple field transformations our procedure allows us to relate solitons with different topological properties. We present several interesting examples of such solitons in two and three dimensions.

Analytical and numerical vortex solutions for the extended Skyrme-Faddeev model in a (3+1) dimensional Minkowski space-time are investigated. The extension is obtained by adding to the Lagrangian a quartic term, which is the square of the kinetic term, and a potential which breaks the SO(3) symmetry down to SO(2). The construction of the solutions has been done in twofold: one makes use of an axially symmetric ansatz and solves the resulting ODE by an analytical and a numerical way. The analytical vortices are obtained for special form of the potentials, and the numerical ones are computed using the successive over relaxation method for wider choice of the potentials. Another is based on a simulational technique named the simulated annealing method which is available to treat the non-axisymmetric shape of solutions. The crucial thing for determining the structure of vortices is the type of the potential.

We consider modifications of the nonlinear Schrodinger model (NLS) to look at the recently introduced concept of quasi-integrability. We show that such models possess an infinite number of quasi-conserved charges which present intriguing properties in relation to very specific space-time parity transformations. For the case of two-soliton solutions where the fields are eigenstates of this parity, those charges are asymptotically conserved in the scattering process of the solitons. Even though the charges vary in time their values in the far past and the far future are the same. Such results are obtained through analytical and numerical methods, and employ adaptations of algebraic techniques used in integrable field theories. Our findings may have important consequences on the applications of these models in several areas of non-linear science. We make a detailed numerical study of the modified NLS potential of the form V = |psi|^(2(2+epsilon)), with epsilon being a perturbation parameter. We perform numerical simulations of the scattering of solitons for this model and find a good agreement with the results predicted by the analytical considerations. Our paper shows that the quasi-integrability concepts recently proposed in the context of modifications of the sine-Gordon model remain valid for perturbations of the NLS model.

Despite the fact that the integral form of the equations of classical electrodynamics is well known, the same is not true for non-abelian gauge theories. The aim of the present paper is threefold. First, we present the integral form of the classical Yang-Mills equations in the presence of sources, and then use it to solve the long standing problem of constructing conserved charges, for any field configuration, which are invariant under general gauge transformations and not only under transformations that go to a constant at spatial infinity. The construction is based on concepts in loop spaces and on a generalization of the non-abelian Stokes theorem for two-form connections. The third goal of the paper is to present the integral form of the self dual Yangs-Mills equations, and calculate the conserved charges associated to them. The charges are explicitly evaluated for the cases of monopoles, dyons, instantons and merons, and we show that in many cases those charges must be quantized. Our results are important in the understanding of global properties of non-abelian gauge theories.

The extension is obtained by adding to the Lagrangian a quartic term, which is the square of the kinetic term, and a potential which breaks the SO(3) symmetry down to SO(2). The construction makes use of an ansatz, invariant under the joint action of the internal SO(2) and three commuting U(1) subgroups of the Poincaré group, and which reduces the equations of motion to an ODE for a profile function depending on the distance to the $x^3$-axis. The vortices have finite energy per unit length, and have waves propagating along them with the speed of light. The analytical vortices are obtained for special choice of potentials, and the numerical ones are constructed using the Successive Over Relaxation method for more general potentials. The spectrum of solutions is analyzed in detail, specially its dependence upon special combinations of coupling constants.

The equations of motion are written as the equality of an hyper-volume ordered integral to an hyper-surface ordered integral on the border of that hyper-volume. The approach applies to integrable field theories in (1+1) dimensions, Chern-Simons theories in (2+1) dimensions, and non-abelian gauge theories in (2+1) and (3+1) dimensions. We use the deformed sine-Gordon models recently presented by Bazeia et al to discuss possible definitions of quasi-integrability. We present one such definition and use it to calculate an infinite number of quasi-conserved quantities through a modification of the usual techniques of integrable field theories. Performing an expansion around the sine-Gordon theory we are able to evaluate the charges and the anomalies of their conservation laws in a perturbative power series in a small parameter which describes the "closeness" to the integrable sine-Gordon model. Our results indicate that in the case of the two-soliton scattering the charges are conserved asymptotically, i.e. their values are the same in the distant past and future, when the solitons are well separated. We construct an infinite class of exact solutions for that integrable submodel where the fields are meromorphic functions of the combinations (x^1+i x^2) and (x^3+x^0) of the Cartesian coordinates of four dimensional Minkowski space-time. Among those solutions we have static vortices and also vortices with waves traveling along them with the speed of light. The energy per unity of length of the vortices show an interesting and intricate interaction among the vortices and waves.

We construct static and time-dependent exact soliton solutions with non-trivial Hopf topological charge for a field theory in 3+1 dimensions with the target space being the two dimensional sphere S**2. The model considered is a reduction of the so-called extended Skyrme-Faddeev theory by the removal of the quadratic term in derivatives of the fields. The solutions are constructed using an ansatz based on the conformal and target space symmetries. The solutions are said self-dual because they solve first order differential equations which together with some conditions on the coupling constants, imply the second order equations of motion. The solutions belong to a sub-sector of the theory with an infinite number of local conserved currents. The equation for the profile function of the ansatz corresponds to the Bogomolny equation for the sine-Gordon model.

We construct static soliton solutions with non-zero Hopf topological charges to a theory which is an extension of the Skyrme-Faddeev model by the addition of a further quartic term in derivatives. We use an axially symmetric ansatz based on toroidal coordinates, and solve the resulting two coupled non-linear partial differential equations in two variables by a successive over-relaxation (SOR) method. We construct numerical solutions with Hopf charge up to four, and calculate their analytical behavior in some limiting cases. The solutions present an interesting behavior under the changes of a special combination of the coupling constants of the quartic terms. Their energies and sizes tend to zero as that combination approaches a particular special value. We calculate the equivalent of the Vakulenko and Kapitanskii energy bound for the theory and find that it vanishes at that same special value of the coupling constants. In addition, the model presents an integrable sector with an infinite number of local conserved currents which apparently are not related to symmetries of the action. In the intersection of those two special sectors the theory possesses exact vortex solutions (static and time dependent) which were constructed in a previous paper by one of the authors. It is believed that such model describes some aspects of the low energy limit of the pure SU(2) Yang-Mills theory, and our results may be important in identifying important structures in that strong coupling regime.

We review our proposal to generalize the standard two-dimensional flatness construction of Lax-Zakharov-Shabat to relativistic field theories in d+1 dimensions. The fundamentals from the theory of connections on loop spaces are presented and clarified. These ideas are exposed using mathematical tools familiar to physicists. We exhibit recent and new results that relate the locality of the loop space curvature to the diffeomorphism invariance of the loop space holonomy. These result are used to show that the holonomy is abelian if the holonomy is diffeomorphism invariant.
These results justify in part and set the limitations of the local implementations of the approach which has been worked out in the last decade. We highlight very interesting applications like the construction and the solution of an integrable four dimensional field theory with Hopf solitons, and new integrability conditions which generalize BPS equations to systems such as Skyrme theories. Applications of these ideas leading to new constructions are implemented in theories that admit volume preserving diffeomorphisms of the target space as symmetries. Applications to physically relevant systems like Yang Mills theories are summarized. We also discuss other possibilities that have not yet been explored.
