A single laser-cooled ($T\approx 1$~mK) ion serves, together with photon-counting and/or photon-imaging units, as a radiofrequency detector covering a broad-band frequency spectrum, in the present case from kHz to a few MHz. Such detectors ($^{40,42,44,48}$Ca$^{\scriptsize{+}}$) allow measuring extremely small forces, with measured normalized sensitivities down to $7.4(3.5)$ yN$/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ and $24.9(9.9)$ yN$/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ in the MHz and kHz regime, respectively. The direct determination of the ions' amplitudes makes a cyclotron-frequency measurement process more robust against inhomogeneities of the magnetic field and/or deviations of the electric quadrupole field due to mechanical imperfections of the trap.

When dealing with certain mathematical problems, it is sometimes necessary to show that some function induces a metric on a certain space. When this function is not a well renowned example of a distance, one has to develop very particular arguments that appeal to the concrete expression of the function in order to do so. The main purpose of this paper is to provide several sufficient results ensuring that a function of two variables induces a distance on the real line, as well as some necessary conditions, together with several examples that show the applicability of these results. In particular, we show how a hypothesis about the sign of the cross partial derivative of the candidate to distance is helpful for deriving such kind of results.

Then, we introduce the Stieltjes analytic functions locally, as an infinite series of these Stieltjes monomials and we study their properties in depth and how they relate to higher order Stieltjes differentiation. We define the exponential series and prove that it solves the first order linear problem. Finally, we apply the theory to solve higher order linear homogeneous Stieltjes differential equations with constant coefficients.

Two-ion crystals constitute a platform for investigations of quantum nature that can be extended to any ion species or charged particle provided one of the ions in the crystal can be directly laser-cooled and manipulated with laser radiation. This paper presents the formation of two-ion crystals for quantum metrology in a 7-tesla open-ring Penning trap. $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ions are produced either internally by photoionization or externally in a (Paul-trap) source, transported through the strong magnetic field gradient of the superconducting solenoid, and captured in-flight with a mean kinetic energy of a few electronvolts with respect to the minimum of the Penning-trap potential well. Laser cooling of the two-ion crystal in a strong magnetic field towards reaching the quantum regime is also presented with particular emphasis on the cooling of the radial modes.

The coherent coupling between a quartz electro-mechanical resonator at room temperature and trapped ions in a 7-tesla Penning trap has been demonstrated for the first time. The signals arising from the coupling remain for integration times in the orders of seconds. From the measurements carried out, we demonstrate that the coupling allows detecting the reduced-cyclotron frequency ($ν_+$) within times below 10~ms and with an improved resolution compared to conventional electronic detection schemes. A resolving power $ν_+/Δν_+=2.4\times10^{7}$ has been reached in single measurements. In this publication we present the first results, emphasizing the novel features of the quartz resonator as fast non-destructive ion-trap detector together with different ways to analyze the data and considering aspects like precision, resolution and sensitivity.

A novel formulation of the environmental problem, based on the coupling of nonlinear models for hydrodynamics, water temperature and concentrations of the different species involved in the eutrophication processes, is introduced. After a complete and rigorous analysis of the existence of optimal solutions, a full numerical algorithm for their computation is proposed. Finally, some numerical results for a realistic scenario are shown, in order to prove the efficiency of our approach.

The recovery type error estimators introduced by Zienkiewicz and Zhu use a recovered stress field evaluated from the Finite Element (FE) solution. Their accuracy depends on the quality of the recovered field. In this sense, accurate results are obtained using recovery procedures based on the Superconvergent Patch recovery technique (SPR). These error estimators can be easily implemented and provide accurate estimates. Another important feature is that the recovered solution is of a better quality than the FE solution and can therefore be used as an enhanced solution. We have developed an SPR-type recovery technique that considers equilibrium and displacements constraints to obtain a very accurate recovered displacements field from which a recovered stress field can also be evaluated. We propose the use of these recovered fields as the standard output of the FE code instead of the raw FE solution. Techniques to quantify the error of the recovered solution are therefore needed. In this report we present an error estimation technique that accurately evaluates the error of the recovered solution both at global and local levels in the FEM and XFEM frameworks. We have also developed an h-adaptive mesh refinement strategy based on the error of the recovered solution. As the converge rate of the error of the recovered solution is higher than that of the FE one, the computational cost required to obtain a solution with a prescribed accuracy is smaller than for traditional h-adaptive processes.

Quantum and collisional effects on the unstable spectrum of a relativistic electron beam-plasma system are investigated through a two-fluids model. Application is made to the near target center interaction of the relativistic electron beam in the Fast Ignition Scenario. Partial degeneracy effects are found negligible while the most influential factors are the beam temperature and the electron-ion collision frequency of the plasma. The introduction of the latter triggers some oblique unstable modes of much larger wave length than the collisionless ones. Transition from the collisionless regime to the resistive one is thus documented and found discontinuous.
