In the context of the 2HDM, and assuming that neutrinos acquire masses via the Weinberg operator, we perform a systematic analysis to determine the minimal quark and lepton flavour patterns, compatible with masses, mixing and CP violation data, realisable by Abelian symmetries. We determine four minimal models for quarks, where the number of independent parameters matches the number of observables. For the lepton sector, three minimal predictive models are identified. Namely, we find scenarios with a preference for the upper/lower octant of the $θ_{23}$ atmospheric mixing angle, that exhibit lower bounds on the lightest neutrino masses currently probed by cosmology and testable at future neutrinoless double beta decay experiments, even for a normally-ordered neutrino masses. We investigate the phenomenology of each model taking into account all relevant theoretical, electroweak precision observables, scalar sector constraints, as well as stringent quark flavour processes such as $\overline{B} \rightarrow X_s γ$, $B_s \rightarrow μ^- μ^+$ and meson oscillations, and the charged lepton flavour-violating decays $e_α^{-} \rightarrow e_β^{-} e_γ^{+} e_δ^{-}$ and $e_α\rightarrow e_βγ$. We show that, in some cases, Abelian flavour symmetries provide a natural framework to suppress flavour-changing neutral couplings and lead to scenarios featuring heavy neutral/charged scalar masses below the TeV scale within the reach of current experiments.

In the vanilla type-I seesaw leptogenesis scenario, CP violation required to generate the lepton asymmetries in the heavy Majorana neutrino decays stem from complex Dirac-type Yukawa couplings. In this paper we explore the case in which that CP violation originates from the vacuum expectation value of a complex scalar singlet at a very high scale. This non-trivial CP-violating phase can be successfully communicated to the low-energy neutrino sector via the heavy neutrino portal. The new scalar-singlet degrees of freedom generate new contributions to the CP asymmetries relevant for leptogenesis not only at the one-loop level but also through tree-level three-body decays. These are computed here for an arbitrary number of heavy neutrinos, Higgs doublets and scalar singlets. We also take into account the new decays and scattering processes that enter the unflavoured Boltzmann equations governing the heavy-neutrino particle densities and the $(B-L)$-asymmetry evolution. Having established the framework of interest, we present a simple model with two RH neutrinos, two Higgs doublets and a complex scalar singlet, supplemented with a $\mathcal{Z}_8$ flavour symmetry. This symmetry minimises the number of free parameters without compromising the possibility of spontaneous CP violation and compatibility with neutrino data. In fact, the only viable $\mathcal{Z}_8$ charge assignment shows a preference for a non-trivial spontaneous CP-violating phase, which in turn leads to a non-vanishing CP asymmetry due to the direct link between high- and low-energy CP violation. An interesting feature of this simple setup is that the usual wave and vertex type-I seesaw contributions to the CP asymmetry vanish due to the $\mathcal{Z}_8$ symmetry. Thus, the observed baryon-to-photon ratio can be explained thanks to the new couplings among the heavy neutrinos and the new scalar degrees of freedom.

We study the phenomenology of the minimal $(2,2)$ inverse-seesaw model supplemented with Abelian flavour symmetries. To ensure maximal predictability, we establish the most restrictive flavour patterns which can be realised by those symmetries. This setup requires adding an extra scalar doublet and two complex scalar singlets to the Standard Model, paving the way to implement spontaneous CP violation. It is shown that such CP-violating effects can be successfully communicated to the lepton sector through couplings of the scalar singlets to the new sterile fermions. The Majorana and Dirac CP phases turn out to be related, and the active-sterile neutrino mixing is determined by the active neutrino masses, mixing angles and CP phases. We investigate the constraints imposed on the model by the current experimental limits on lepton flavour-violating decays, especially those on the branching ratio $BR(μ\rightarrow e γ)$ and the capture rate $CR(μ-e,{\rm Au})$. The prospects to further test the framework put forward in this work are also discussed in view of the projected sensitivities of future experimental searches sensitive to the presence of heavy sterile neutrinos. Namely, we investigate at which extent upcoming searches for $μ\rightarrow e γ$, $μ\rightarrow 3e$ and $μ-e$ conversion in nuclei will be able to test our model, and how complementary will future high-energy collider and beam-dump experiments be in that task.

Abstract:
We study a possible mechanism for astrophysical jet production from a neutron star composed by a partially bosonized npe-gas. We obtain that the expulsion of a stable stream of matter might be triggered by the quantum magnetic collapse of one or various components of the gas, while its collimation is due to the formation of a strong self-generated magnetic field.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in extensions of the Standard Model in which naturally small Dirac neutrino masses arise due to existence of a symmetry which protects neutrino's Diracness. Motivated by this, we consider an extension of the Standard Model with a second Higgs doublet (2HDM) and three right-handed neutrinos where lepton number is conserved and, thus, neutrinos are Dirac particles. In this framework, we identify the most restrictive texture-zero combinations for the Dirac-neutrino and charged-lepton mass matrices that lead to masses and mixings compatible with current experimental data. We then investigate, in a systematic way, which of these combinations can be realized by Abelian continuous U(1) or discrete $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetries. We conclude that, from the 28 initially possible sets of maximally-restricted lepton mass matrices, only 5 have a symmetry realization in the 2HDM. For these cases, one-to-one relations among the Yukawa couplings and the neutrino mass and mixing parameters are established, and the fermion interactions with the neutral and charged scalars of the 2HDM are also determined. Consequences for lepton universality in $τ$ decays and rare lepton-flavor-violating processes are also discussed.

In the framework of the two right-handed neutrino seesaw model, we consider maximally-restrictive texture-zero patterns for the lepton Yukawa coupling and mass matrices, together with the existence of a remnant CP symmetry. Under these premisses, we find that several textures are compatible with the most recent data coming from neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. It is shown that the number of allowed texture zeros depends on the type of heavy right-handed neutrino mass spectrum. Namely, at most one (two)-zero patterns are allowed in the Dirac Yukawa coupling matrix for nondegenerate (degenerate) heavy Majorana neutrinos. The predictions for the low-energy Dirac and Majorana CP-violating phases, and for the effective mass parameter relevant in neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments, are presented and discussed. We also comment on the impact of future experimental improvements in scrutinising texture-zero patterns with a remnant CP symmetry, within the minimal version of the seesaw mechanism considered here.

In the context of Standard Model (SM) extensions, the seesaw mechanism provides the most natural explanation for the smallness of neutrino masses. In this work we consider the most economical type-I seesaw realization in which two right-handed neutrinos are added to the SM field content. For the sake of predictability, we impose the maximum number of texture zeros in the lepton Yukawa and mass matrices. All possible patterns are analyzed in the light of the most recent neutrino oscillation data, and predictions for leptonic CP violation are presented. We conclude that, in the charged-lepton mass basis, eight different texture combinations are compatible with neutrino data at $1σ$, all of them for an inverted-hierarchical neutrino mass spectrum. Four of these cases predict a CP-violating Dirac phase close to $3π/2$, which is around the current best-fit value from global analysis of neutrino oscillation data. If one further reduces the number of free parameters by considering three equal elements in the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix, several texture combinations are still compatible with data but only at $3σ$. For all viable textures, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is computed in the context of thermal leptogenesis, assuming (mildly) hierarchical heavy Majorana neutrino masses $M_{1,2}$. It is shown that the flavored regime is ruled out, while the unflavored one requires $M_{1} \sim 10^{14}$ GeV.

We look for all weak bases that lead to texture zeroes in the quark mass matrices and contain a minimal number of parameters in the framework of the standard model. Since there are ten physical observables, namely, six nonvanishing quark masses, three mixing angles and one CP phase, the maximum number of texture zeroes in both quark sectors is altogether nine. The nine zero entries can only be distributed between the up- and down-quark sectors in matrix pairs with six and three texture zeroes or five and four texture zeroes. In the weak basis where a quark mass matrix is nonsingular and has six zeroes in one sector, we find that there are 54 matrices with three zeroes in the other sector, obtainable through right-handed weak basis transformations. It is also found that all pairs composed of a nonsingular matrix with five zeroes and a nonsingular and nondecoupled matrix with four zeroes simply correspond to a weak basis choice. Without any further assumptions, none of these pairs of up- and down-quark mass matrices has physical content. It is shown that all non-weak-basis pairs of quark mass matrices that contain nine zeroes are not compatible with current experimental data. The particular case of the so-called nearest-neighbour-interaction pattern is also discussed.

The compatibility of these textures with current constraints on lepton-flavor-violating processes is also studied. The ultraviolet completion of these models is discussed in the framework of the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses.

Here we address all these issues in the context of flavour models with any number of Higgs doublets. We stress the importance of analysing the Higgs vacuum expectation values that are pseudo-invariant under the generators of all subgroups. It is shown that the only way of obtaining a physical CKM mixing matrix and, simultaneously, non-degenerate and non-zero quark masses is requiring the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs fields to break completely the full flavour group, except possibly for some symmetry belonging to baryon number. The application of this technique to some illustrative examples, such as the flavour groups Delta(27), A4 and S3, is also presented.

We consider Abelian extensions based on an extra U(1)_X gauge symmetry, where X is an arbitrary linear combination of the baryon number B and the individual lepton numbers L_{e,mu,tau}. By requiring cancellation of gauge anomalies, we perform a detailed analysis in order to identify the charge assignments under the new gauge symmetry that lead to neutrino phenomenology compatible with current experiments. In particular, we study how the new symmetry can constrain the flavor structure of the Majorana neutrino mass matrix, leading to two-zero textures with a minimal extra fermion and scalar content. The possibility of distinguishing different gauge symmetries and seesaw realizations at colliders is also briefly discussed.

We study the cosmological evolution of asymmetries in the two-Higgs doublet extension of the Standard Model, prior to the electroweak phase transition. If Higgs flavour-exchanging interactions are sufficiently slow, then a relative asymmetry among the Higgs doublets corresponds to an effectively conserved quantum number. Since the magnitude of the Higgs couplings depends on the choice of basis in the Higgs doublet space, we attempt to formulate basis-independent out-of-equilibrium conditions. We show that an initial asymmetry between the Higgs scalars, which could be generated by CP violation in the Higgs sector, will be transformed into a baryon asymmetry by the sphalerons, without the need of $B-L$ violation. This novel mechanism of baryogenesis through (split) Higgsogenesis is exemplified with simple scenarios based on the out-of-equilibrium decay of heavy singlet scalar fields into the Higgs doublets.

We consider a simple extension of the Standard Model by adding two Higgs triplets and a complex scalar singlet to its particle content. In this framework, the CP symmetry is spontaneously broken at high energies by the complex vacuum expectation value of the scalar singlet. Such a breaking leads to leptonic CP violation at low energies. The model also exhibits an $A_4\times Z_4$ flavour symmetry which, after being spontaneously broken at a high-energy scale, yields a tribimaximal pattern in the lepton sector. We consider small perturbations around the tribimaximal vacuum alignment condition in order to generate nonzero values of $θ_{13}$, as required by the latest neutrino oscillation data. It is shown that the value of $θ_{13}$ recently measured by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment can be accommodated in our framework together with large Dirac-type CP violation. We also address the viability of leptogenesis in our model through the out-of-equilibrium decays of the Higgs triplets. In particular, the CP asymmetries in the triplet decays into two leptons are computed and it is shown that the effective leptogenesis and low-energy CP-violating phases are directly linked.

The discovery of neutrino oscillations provides a solid evidence for nonzero neutrino masses and leptonic mixing. The fact that neutrino masses are so tiny constitutes a puzzling problem in particle physics. From the theoretical viewpoint, the smallness of neutrino masses can be elegantly explained through the seesaw mechanism. Another challenging issue for particle physics and cosmology is the explanation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in Nature. Among the viable mechanisms, leptogenesis is a simple and well-motivated framework. In this talk we briefly review these aspects, making emphasis on the possibility of linking neutrino physics to the cosmological baryon asymmetry originated from leptogenesis.

The idea of grand unification in a minimal supersymmetric SU(5)xSU(5) framework is revisited. It is shown that the unification of gauge couplings into a unique coupling constant can be achieved at a high-energy scale compatible with proton decay constraints. This requires the addition of a minimal particle content at intermediate energy scales. In particular, the introduction of the SU(2)_L triplets belonging to the (15,1)+(\bar{15},1) representations, as well as of the scalar triplet Σ_3 and octet Σ_8 in the (24,1) representation, turns out to be crucial for unification. The masses of these intermediate particles can vary over a wide range, and even lie in the TeV region. In contrast, the exotic vector-like fermions must be heavy enough and have masses above 10^10 GeV. We also show that, if the SU(5)xSU(5) theory is embedded into a heterotic string scenario, it is not possible to achieve gauge coupling unification with gravity at the perturbative string scale.

The main properties of magnetized strangelets, namely, their energy per baryon, radius and electric charge, are studied. Temperature effects are also taken into account in order to study their stability compared to the 56Fe isotope and non-magnetized strangelets using the liquid drop model. Massive quarks are considered with the aim to have a more realistic description for strangelets in the astrophysical context and the environment of heavy ion colliders, playing also an important role in the thermodynamical quantities of the quark gas. It is concluded that the presence of a magnetic field tends to stabilize more the strangelets, even when temperature effects are taken into account. Magnetized strangelets in a paired superconductor phase (magnetized color flavor locked phase) are also discussed. It is shown that they are more stable than ordinary magnetized strangelets for typical gap values of the order of O(100) MeV.

Tribimaximal leptonic mixing is a mass-independent mixing scheme consistent with the present solar and atmospheric neutrino data. By conveniently decomposing the effective neutrino mass matrix associated to it, we derive generic predictions in terms of the parameters governing the neutrino masses. We extend this phenomenological analysis to other mass-independent mixing schemes which are related to the tribimaximal form by a unitary transformation. We classify models that produce tribimaximal leptonic mixing through the group structure of their family symmetries in order to point out that there is often a direct connection between the group structure and the phenomenological analysis. The type of seesaw mechanism responsible for neutrino masses plays a role here, as it restricts the choices of family representations and affects the viability of leptogenesis. We also present a recipe to generalize a given tribimaximal model to an associated model with a different mass-independent mixing scheme, which preserves the connection between the group structure and phenomenology as in the original model. This procedure is explicitly illustrated by constructing toy models with the transpose tribimaximal, bimaximal, golden ratio, and hexagonal leptonic mixing patterns.

The stability of the color flavor locked phase in the presence of a strong magnetic field is investigated within the phenomenological MIT bag model, taking into account the variation of the strange quark mass, the baryon density, the magnetic field, as well as the bag and gap parameters. It is found that the minimum value of the energy per baryon in a color flavor locked state at vanishing pressure is lower than the corresponding one for unpaired magnetized strange quark matter and, as the magnetic field increases, the energy per baryon decreases. This implies that magnetized color flavor locked matter is more stable and could become the ground state inside neutron stars. The mass-radius relation for such stars is also studied.

We consider an effective theory with an A4 x Z3 x Z4 symmetry, which is spontaneously broken at a scale much higher than the electroweak scale. At the high scale, leptonic Yukawa interactions lead to exact tribimaximal mixing and the heavy Majorana neutrino mass spectrum is exactly degenerate. In this framework, leptogenesis becomes viable once this degeneracy is lifted either by renormalization group effects or by a soft breaking of the A4 symmetry. The implications for low-energy neutrino physics are discussed.

It is shown that type-I and type-III seesaw mechanisms cannot be simultaneously implemented with an anomaly-free local U(1)_X, unless the symmetry is a replica of the well-known hypercharge. For combined type-I/II or type-III/II seesaw models it is always possible to find nontrivial anomaly-free charge assignments, which are however tightly constrained, if the new neutral gauge boson is kinematically accessible at LHC. The discovery of the latter and the measurement of its decays into third-generation quarks, as well as its mixing with the standard Z boson, would allow one to discriminate among different seesaw realizations.

We then analyse four-zero texture Ansatze where the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices have the same structure. The four texture zeros cannot be obtained simultaneously through weak basis transformations, so these Ansatze do have physical content. In this paper we study the role of a strong magnetic field in the thermodynamical properties of a magnetized degenerate strange quark gas, taking into account beta-equilibrium and charge neutrality. Quarks and electrons interact with the magnetic field via their electric charges and anomalous magnetic moments. In contrast to the magnetic field value of 10^19 G, obtained when anomalous magnetic moments are not taken into account, we find the upper bound B < 8.6 x 10^17 G, for the stability of the system. A phase transition could be hidden for fields greater than this value.

If the only source of high-energy CP violation comes from the left-handed leptonic sector, then it is possible to establish a bridge between flavored leptogenesis and low-energy leptonic CP violation. We explore this connection taking into account our present knowledge about low-energy neutrino parameters and the matter-antimatter asymmetry observed in the Universe. In this framework, we find that leptogenesis favors a hierarchical light neutrino mass spectrum, while for quasi-degenerate and inverted hierarchical neutrino masses there is a very narrow allowed window. Using the current precision electroweak data, we look for the minimal particle content which is necessary to add to the standard model in order to have a complete unification of gauge couplings and gravity at the weakly coupled heterotic string scale. We find that the addition of a vector-like fermion at an intermediate scale and a non-standard hypercharge normalization are in general sufficient to achieve this goal at two-loop level. Requiring the extra matter scale to be below the TeV scale, it is found that the addition of three vector-like fermion doublets with a mass around 700 GeV yields a perfect string-scale unification, provided that the affine levels are $(k_Y, k_2 ,k_3)=(13/3, 1, 2) $, as in the $SU(5) \times SU(5)$ string-GUT. Furthermore, if supersymmetry is broken at the unification scale, the Higgs mass is predicted in the range 125 GeV - 170 GeV, depending on the precise values of the top quark mass and $\tan β$ parameter.

The mechanism of thermal leptogenesis is investigated in the high-energy regime of braneworld cosmology. Within the simplest seesaw framework with hierarchical heavy Majorana neutrinos, we study the implications of the modified Friedmann equation on the realization of this mechanism. In contrast with the usual leptogenesis scenario of standard cosmology, where low-energy neutrino data favors a mildly strong washout regime, we find that leptogenesis in the braneworld regime is successfully realized in a weak washout regime. Furthermore, a quasi-degenerate light neutrino mass spectrum is found to be compatible with this scenario. For an initially vanishing heavy Majorana neutrino abundance, thermal leptogenesis in the brane requires the decaying heavy Majorana neutrino mass to be M1 > 10^10 GeV and the fundamental five-dimensional gravity scale 10^12 < M5 < 10^16 GeV, which corresponds to a transition from brane to standard cosmology at temperatures 10^8 < Tt < 10^14 GeV.

In the framework of the standard model extended by three right-handed heavy Majorana neutrinos with masses M1 = M2 << M3 at some high scale, we show that the mass splitting and CP-violating effects induced by renormalization group corrections can lead to values of the CP asymmetries large enough for a successful leptogenesis. In this scenario, the low-energy neutrino oscillation data can also be easily accommodated. If one requires the extra matter scale to be below the TeV scale, then it is found that the addition of three vector-like fermion doublets with a mass around 700 GeV yields a perfect string-scale unification, provided that the affine levels are kY=13/3, k2=1 and k3=2, as in the SU(5) X SU(5) string-GUT. Furthermore, if supersymmetry is broken at the unification scale, the Higgs mass is predicted in the range 125 GeV - 170 GeV, depending on the precise values of the top quark mass and tan(beta) parameter.

The mechanism of gravitational baryogenesis, based on the CPT-violating gravitational interaction between the derivative of the Ricci scalar curvature and the baryon-number current, is investigated in the context of the Gauss-Bonnet braneworld cosmology. We study the constraints on the fundamental five-dimensional gravity scale, the effective scale of B-violation and the decoupling temperature, for the above mechanism to generate an acceptable baryon asymmetry during the radiation-dominated era. The scenario of gravitational leptogenesis, where the lepton-number violating interactions are associated with the neutrino mass seesaw operator, is also considered.

In natural inflation models, the inflaton is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson and the flatness of the potential is protected by shift symmetries. In this framework, a successful inflation requires the global symmetry to be spontaneously broken at a scale close to the Planck mass. Such a high value of the spontaneous breaking scale may not be legitimate in an effective field theory. On the other hand, if natural inflation occurs during the nonconventional high-energy era in braneworld cosmology, the conditions for the inflaton slow rolling can be eased and the spontaneous breaking scale can be lowered to values below the Planck scale. We examine the observational constraints on this scenario and study the possibility that the baryon asymmetry of the universe is generated by the decay of the pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson during the reheating era.

Modifications to the Friedmann equation in brane cosmology can have important implications for early universe phenomena such as inflation and the generation of the baryon asymmetry. We study a simple scenario of chaotic brane inflation where, in a minimal supersymmetric seesaw model, the scalar superpartner of a heavy singlet Majorana neutrino drives inflation and, simultaneously, generates the required lepton asymmetry through its direct out-of-equilibrium decays after the inflationary era. For a gravitino mass in the range 100 GeV - 1 TeV, we find that successful nucleosynthesis and leptogenesis in this framework require that the 5D Planck mass is in the range M5 ~ 10^10 - 10^13 GeV and the reheating temperature Trh ~ 10^6 - 10^8 GeV.
