We determine the phase diagram of a one-dimensional Bose gas in the presence of disorder with short- and long-range correlations, the latter decaying with distance as $1/|x|^{1+σ}$. When $σ<0$, the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition between the superfluid and the localized phase is driven by the long-range correlations and the Luttinger parameter $K$ takes the critical value $K_c(σ)=3/2-σ/2$. The localized phase is a Bose glass for $σ>σ_c=3-π^2/3\simeq -0.289868$, and a Mott glass -- characterized by a vanishing compressibility and a gapless conductivity -- when $σ<σ_c$. Our conclusions, based on the nonperturbative functional renormalization group and perturbative renormalization group, are confirmed by the study of the case $σ=-1$, corresponding to a perfectly correlated disorder in space, where the model is exactly solvable in the semiclassical limit $K\to 0^+$.

We study a non-Anderson disorder driven quantum phase transition in a semi-infinite Dirac semimetal with a flat boundary. The conformally invariant boundary conditions, which include those that are time-reversal invariant, lead to nodal-like surface states on the boundary. In this case the boundary becomes metallic at a critical disorder that is weaker than that for the semimetal-diffusive metal transition in the bulk. The latter transition takes place in the presence of a metallic surface; in the language of surface critical phenomena this corresponds to the so-called extraordinary transition. The lines of the surface and the extraordinary transitions meet at the special transition point. To elucidate universal properties at different transitions on the phase diagram, we employ renormalization group methods and compute the corresponding surface critical exponents using $\varepsilon$-expansion.

We investigate twisted bilayer graphene near charge neutrality using a generalized Bistritzer-MacDonald continuum model, accounting for corrugation effects. The Fermi velocity vanishes for particular twist angles properly reproducing the physics of the celebrated magic angles. Using group representation theory, we identify all contact interaction potentials compatible with the symmetries of the model. This enables us to identify two classes of quartic interactions leading to either the opening of a gap or to nematic ordering. We then implement a renormalization group analysis to study the competition between these interactions for a twist angle approaching the first magic value. This combined group theory-renormalization study reveals that the proximity to the first magic angle favors the occurrence of a layer-polarized, gapped state with a spatial modulation of interlayer correlations, which we call nematic insulator.

We reconsider the problem of the critical behavior of a three-dimensional $O(m)$ symmetric magnetic system in the presence of random anisotropy disorder with a generic trimodal random axis distribution. By introducing $n$ replicas to average over disorder it can be coarse-grained to a $φ^{4}$-theory with $m \times n$ component order parameter and five coupling constants taken in the limit of $n \to 0$. Using a field theory approach we renormalize the model to two-loop order and calculate the $β$-functions within the $\varepsilon$ expansion and directly in three dimensions. We analyze the corresponding renormalization group flows with the help of the Padé-Borel resummation technique. We show that there is no stable fixed point accessible from physical initial conditions whose existence was argued in the previous studies. This may indicate an absence of a long-range ordered phase in the presence of random anisotropy disorder with a generic random axis distribution.

Their proper theoretical description requires the functional renormalization group. We show that their critical behavior close to the depinning transition is related to a much simpler model, $O(n)$-symmetric $φ^4$ theory in the unusual limit of $n\to -2$. We demonstrate that both theories yield identical results to 4-loop order and give both a perturbative and a non-perturbative proof of their equivalence. As we show, both theories can be used to describe loop-erased random walks (LERWs), the trace of a random walk where loops are erased as soon as they are formed. Remarkably, two famous models of non-self-intersecting random walks, self-avoiding walks (SAWs) and LERWs, can both be mapped onto $φ^4$ theory taken, with formally $n=0$ and $n\to -2$ components. This map** allows us to compute the dynamic critical exponent of CDWs at the depinning transition and the fractal dimension of LERWs in $d=3$ with unprecedented accuracy, $z(d=3)= 1.6243 \pm 0.001$, in excellent agreement with the estimate $z = 1.624 00 \pm 0.00005$ of numerical simulations.

A Weyl semimetal is a three dimensional topological gapless phase. In the presence of strong enough disorder it undergoes a quantum transition towards a diffusive metal phase whose universality class depends on the range of disorder correlations. Similar to other quantum transitions driven by disorder, the critical wave functions at the semimetal-diffusive metal transition exhibit multifractality. Using renormalization group methods we study the corresponding multifractal spectrum as a function of the range of disorder correlations for generic disorder including random scalar and vector potentials. We also discuss the relation between the geometric fluctuations of critical wave functions and the broad distribution of the local density of states (DOS) at the transition. We derive a new scaling relation for the typical local DOS and argue that it holds for other disorder-driven transitions in which both the average and typical local DOS vanish on one side of the transition. As an illustration we apply it to the recently discussed unconventional quantum transition in disordered semiconductors with power-law dispersion relation near the band edge.

Self-avoiding walks (SAWs) and loop-erased random walks (LERWs) are two ensembles of random paths with numerous applications in mathematics, statistical physics and quantum field theory. While SAWs are described by the $n \to 0$ limit of $φ^4$-theory with $O(n)$-symmetry, LERWs have no obvious field-theoretic description. We analyse two candidates for a field theory of LERWs, and discover a connection between the corresponding and a priori unrelated theories. The first such candidate is the $O(n)$-symmetric $φ^4$ theory at $n=-2$ whose link to LERWs was known in two dimensions due to conformal field theory. Here it is established in arbitrary dimension via a perturbation expansion in the coupling constant. The second candidate is a field theory for charge-density waves pinned by quenched disorder, whose relation to LERWs had been conjectured earlier using analogies with Abelian sandpiles. We explicitly show that both theories yield identical results to 4-loop order and give both a perturbative and a non-perturbative proof of their equivalence. This allows us to compute the fractal dimension of LERWs to order $ε^5$ where $ε=4-d$. In particular, in $d=3$ our theory gives $z_{\rm LERW}(d=3)= 1.6243 \pm 0.001$, in excellent agreement with the estimate $z = 1.624 00 \pm 0.00005$ of numerical simulations.

In the presence of randomness, a relativistic semimetal undergoes a quantum transition towards a diffusive phase. A standard approach relates this transition to the $U(N)$ Gross-Neveu model in the limit of $N \to 0$. We show that the corresponding fixed point is infinitely unstable, demonstrating the necessity to include fluctuations beyond the usual Gaussian approximation. We develop a functional renormalization group method amenable to include these effects and show that the disorder distribution renormalizes following the so-called porous medium equation. We find that the transition is controlled by a nonanalytic fixed point drastically different from that of the $U(N)$ Gross-Neveu model. Our approach provides a unique mechanism of spontaneous generation of a finite density of states and also characterizes the scaling behavior of the broad distribution of fluctuations close to the transition. It can be applied to other problems where nonanalytic effects may play a role, such as the Anderson localization transition.

Correlations of the states at close positive energies and the AC conductivity $σ(ω)$ in the limit of small frequency are described by the Mott-Berezinskii theory. We revisit the instanton approach to the statistics of wave functions and AC transport valid in the tails of the spectrum (large negative energies). Applying our recent results on functional determinants, we calculate exactly the integral over gaussian fluctuations around the exact two-instanton saddle point. We derive correlators of wave functions at different energies beyond the leading order in the energy difference. This allows us to calculate corrections to the Mott-Berezinskii law (the leading small frequency asymptotic behavior of $σ(ω)$) which approximate the exact result in a broad range of $ω$. We compare our results with the ones obtained for positive energies.

We generalize the method of computing functional determinants with a single excluded zero eigenvalue developed by McKane and Tarlie to differential operators with multiple zero eigenvalues. We derive general formulas for such functional determinants of $r\times r$ matrix second order differential operators $O$ with $0 < n \leqslant 2r$ linearly independent zero modes. We separately discuss the cases of the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, when the number of zero modes cannot exceed $r$, and the case of twisted boundary conditions, including the periodic and anti-periodic ones, when the number of zero modes is bounded above by $2r$. In all cases the determinants with excluded zero eigenvalues can be expressed only in terms of the $n$ zero modes and other $r-n$ or $2r-n$ (depending on the boundary conditions) solutions of the homogeneous equation $O h=0$, in the spirit of Gel'fand-Yaglom approach. In instanton calculations, the contribution of the zero modes is taken into account by introducing the so-called collective coordinates. We show that there is a remarkable cancellation of a factor (involving scalar products of zero modes) between the Jacobian of the transformation to the collective coordinates and the functional fluctuation determinant with excluded zero eigenvalues. This cancellation drastically simplifies instanton calculations when one uses our formulas.

Using renormalization group we show that for $N=2$, a "weakly universal" scaling behavior at the continuous transition becomes universal with new critical exponents. For $N>2$, the first-order phase transition is rounded by the correlated disorder and turns into a continuous one.

Using a renormalization group analysis, we show that in three dimensions, three scenarios are possible depending on the disorder correlations. A standard transition is recovered for short range correlations. For disorder decaying slower than $1/r^{2}$, the Weyl semimetal is unstable to any weak disorder and no transition persists. In between, a new phase transition occurs. This transition still separates a disordered metal from a semi-metal, but with a new critical behavior that we analyze to two-loop order.

The Weyl semimetals are topologically protected from a gap opening against weak disorder in three dimensions. However, a strong disorder drives this relativistic semimetal through a quantum transition towards a diffusive metallic phase characterized by a finite density of states at the band crossing. This transition is usually described by a perturbative renormalization group in $d=2+\varepsilon$ of a $U(N)$ Gross-Neveu model in the limit $N \to 0$. Unfortunately, this model is not multiplicatively renormalizable in $2+\varepsilon$ dimensions: An infinite number of relevant operators are required to describe the critical behavior. Hence its use in a quantitative description of the transition beyond one-loop is at least questionable. We propose an alternative route, building on the correspondence between the Gross-Neveu and Gross-Neveu-Yukawa models developed in the context of high energy physics. It results in a model of Weyl fermions with a random non-Gaussian imaginary potential which allows one to study the critical properties of the transition within a $d=4-\varepsilon$ expansion. We also discuss the characterization of the transition by the multifractal spectrum of wave functions.

The physics of massless relativistic quantum particles has recently arisen in the electronic properties of solids following the discovery of graphene. Around the accidental crossing of two energy bands, the electronic excitations are described by a Weyl equation initially derived for ultra-relativistic particles. Similar three and four band semimetals have recently been discovered in two and three dimensions. Among the remarkable features of graphene are the characterization of the band crossings by a topological Berry winding, leading to an anomalous quantum Hall effect, and a finite minimal conductivity at the band crossing while the electronic density vanishes. Here we show that these two properties are intimately related: this result paves the way to a direct measure of the topological nature of a semi-metal. By considering three band semimetals with a flat band in two dimensions, we find that only few of them support a topological Berry phase. The same semimetals are the only ones displaying a non vanishing minimal conductivity at the band crossing. The existence of both a minimal conductivity and a topological robustness originates from properties of the underlying lattice, which are encoded not by a symmetry of their Bloch Hamiltonian, but by a duality.

Below the lower critical dimension $d_{\mathrm{lc}}=4$ the system exhibits a quasi-long-range order with a power-law decay of correlations. At zero temperature the spin waves are localized at the length scale $L_{\mathrm{loc}}$ beyond which the quantum tunneling is exponentially suppressed $ c \sim e^{-(L/L_{\mathrm{loc}})^{2(θ+1)}}$. At finite temperature $T$ the spin waves propagate by thermal activation over energy barriers that scales as $L^θ$. Above $d_{\mathrm{lc}}$ the system undergoes an order-disorder phase transition with activated dynamics such that the relaxation time grows with the correlation length $ξ$ as $τ\sim e^{C ξ^θ/T}$ at finite temperature and as $τ\sim e^{C' ξ^{2(θ+1)}/\hbar^2}$ in the vicinity of the quantum critical point.

We reconsider the functional renormalization-group (FRG) approach to decaying Burgers turbulence, and extend it to decaying Navier-Stokes and Surface-Quasi-Geostrophic turbulence. The method is based on a renormalized small-time expansion, equivalent to a loop expansion, and naturally produces a dissipative anomaly and a cascade after a finite time. We explicitly calculate and analyze the one-loop FRG equations in the zero-viscosity limit as a function of the dimension. For Burgers they reproduce the FRG equation obtained in the context of random manifolds, extending previous results of one of us. Breakdown of energy conservation due to shocks and the appearance of a direct energy cascade corresponds to failure of dimensional reduction in the context of disordered systems. For Navier-Stokes in three dimensions, the velocity-velocity correlation function acquires a linear dependence on the distance, zeta_2=1, in the inertial range, instead of Kolmogorov's zeta_2=2/3; however the possibility remains for corrections at two- or higher-loop order. In two dimensions, we obtain a numerical solution which conserves energy and exhibits an inverse cascade, with explicit analytical results both for large and small distances, in agreement with the scaling proposed by Batchelor. In large dimensions, the one-loop FRG equation for Navier-Stokes converges to that of Burgers.

It is known that above the lower critical dimension $d_{\mathrm{lc}}=4$ the infinite models undergo a paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition for $N>N_c$ ($N_c=2.835$ for random field and $N_c=9.441$ for random anisotropy). For $N<N_c$ and $d<d_{\mathrm{lc}}$ there exists a quasi-long-range ordered phase with zero order parameter and a power-law decay of spin correlations. Using functional renormalization group we derive the surface scaling laws which describe the ordinary surface transition for $d>d_{\mathrm{lc}}$ and the long-range behavior of spin correlations near the surface in the quasi-long-range ordered phase for $d<d_{\mathrm{lc}}$. The corresponding surface exponents are calculated to one-loop order. The obtained results can be applied to the surface scaling of periodic elastic systems in disordered media and amorphous magnets.

We consider 2D Dirac fermions in the presence of three types of disorder: random scalar potential, random gauge potential and random mass with long-range correlations decaying as a power law. Using various methods such as the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA), renormalization group (RG), the matrix Green function formalism and bosonisation we calculate the density of states and study the full counting statistics of fermionic transport at lower energy. The SCBA and RG show that the random correlated scalar potentials generate an algebraically small energy scale below which the density of states saturates to a constant value. For correlated random gauge potential, RG and bosonisation calculations provide consistent behavior of the density of states which diverges at zero energy in an integrable way. In the case of correlated random mass disorder the RG flow has a nontrivial infrared stable fixed point leading to a universal power-law behavior of the density of states and also to universal transport properties. In contrast to uncorrelated case the correlated scalar potential and random mass disorders give rise to deviation from the pseudodiffusive transport already to lowest order in disorder strength.

The system is controlled by a single dimensionless parameter determined by the mass of the particle, the correlation length and the average intensity of the field. We propose a nonlinear sigma model for the description of quantum transport in a mesoscopic metallic conductor with magnetic impurities frozen in a spin glass phase. It accounts for the presence of both the corresponding scalar and magnetic random potentials. In a spin glass, this magnetic random potential is correlated between different realizations. As the strength of the magnetic potential is varied, this model describes the crossover between orthogonal and unitary universality classes of the nonlinear sigma model. We apply this technique to the calculations of the correlation of conductance between two frozen spin configurations in terms of dephasing rates for the usual low energy modes of weak localization theory.

We give evidence that the functional renormalization group (FRG), developed to study disordered systems, may provide a field theoretic description for the loop-erased random walk (LERW), allowing to compute its fractal dimension in a systematic expansion in epsilon=4-d. Up to two loop, the FRG agrees with rigorous bounds, correctly reproduces the leading logarithmic corrections at the upper critical dimension d=4, and compares well with numerical studies. We obtain the universal subleading logarithmic correction in d=4, which can be used as a further test of the conjecture.

We studied the statics and dynamics of elastic manifolds in disordered media with long-range correlated disorder using functional renormalization group (FRG). We identified different universality classes and computed the critical exponents and universal amplitudes describing geometric and velocity-force characteristics. In contrast to uncorrelated disorder, the statistical tilt symmetry is broken resulting in a nontrivial response to a transverse tilting force. For instance, the vortex lattice in disordered superconductors shows a new glass phase whose properties interpolate between those of the Bragg and Bose glasses formed by pointlike and columnar disorder, respectively. Whereas there is no response in the Bose glass phase (transverse Meissner effect), the standard linear response expected in the Bragg-glass gets modified to a power law response in the presence of disorder correlations. We also studied the long distance properties of the O(N) spin system with random fields and random anisotropies correlated as 1/x^{d-sigma}. Using FRG we obtained the phase diagram in (d,sigma,N)-parameter space and computed the corresponding critical exponents. We found that below the lower critical dimension 4+sigma, there can exist two different types of quasi-long-range-order with zero order-parameter but infinite correlation length.

We study elastic systems such as interfaces or lattices pinned by correlated quenched disorder considering two different types of correlations: generalized columnar disorder and quenched defects correlated as ~ x^{-a} for large separation x. Using functional renormalization group methods, we obtain the critical exponents to two-loop order and calculate the response to a transverse field h. The correlated disorder violates the statistical tilt symmetry resulting in nonlinear response to a tilt. Elastic systems with columnar disorder exhibit a transverse Meissner effect: disorder generates the critical field h_c below which there is no response to a tilt and above which the tilt angle behaves as θ~ (h-h_c)^φ with a universal exponent φ<1. This describes the destruction of a weak Bose glass in type-II superconductors with columnar disorder caused by tilt of the magnetic field. For isotropic long-range correlated disorder, the linear tilt modulus vanishes at small fields leading to a power-law response θ~ h^φ with φ>1. The obtained results are applied to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with temporally correlated noise.

We compute the fixed points and analyze their regions of stability within a double epsilon=d-4 and sigma expansion. We find that the long-range disorder correlator remains analytic but generates short-range disorder whose correlator develops the usual cusp. This allows us to obtain the phase diagrams in (d,sigma,N) parameter space and compute the critical exponents to first order in epsilon and sigma. We show that the standard renormalization group methods with a finite number of couplings used in previous studies of systems with long-range correlated random fields fail to capture all critical properties. We argue that our results may be relevant to the behavior of He-3A in aerogel.

Using the functional renormalization group (FRG) technique, we compute the distribution of pinning forces in the quasi-static limit. This distribution is universal up to two parameters, the average critical force, and its width. We discuss possible definitions for threshold forces in finite-size samples. With this method we have studied conformationally asymmetric athermic polymer blends in the presence of a hard wall to the first order in effective potentials. For polymers with the same gyration radius $R_g$ but different statistical segment lengths $l_{A}$ and $l_{B}$ the excess concentration of stiffer polymers at the surface is derived as $% δρ_{A}(z=0)\sim (l_{B}^{-2}-l_{A}^{-2}){\ln (}R_{g}^{2}/l_{c}^{2}{)%}$, where $l_{c}$ is a local length below of which the incompressibility of the polymer blend is violated. For polymer blends differing only in degrees of polymerization the shorter polymer enriches the wall.

Using the renormalization group analysis in $d=2+ε$ dimensions we investigate the pure relaxation of the system starting from a completely ordered state. We find that the average magnetization obeys the long-time scaling behavior almost immediately after the system starts to evolve while the correlation and response functions demonstrate scaling behavior which is typical for aging phenomena. The corresponding fluctuation-dissipation ratio is computed to first order in $ε$ and the relation between transverse and longitudinal fluctuations is discussed.

The fixed-point (FP) stability, recently found within the one-step RSB RG treatment, is further explored in terms of replicon eigenvalues. We find that the traditional FPs, which are usually considered to describe the disorder-induced universal critical behaviour, remain stable when the continuous RSB modes are taken into account.
