If two compact quantum metric spaces are close in the metric sense, then how similar are they, as noncommutative spaces? In the classical realm of Riemannian geometry, informally, if two manifolds are close in the Gromov-Hausdorff distance, and belong to a class of manifolds with bounded curvature and diameter, then the spectra of their Laplacian or Dirac operators are also close under many scenari. Of particular interest is the case where a sequence of manifolds converge for the Gromov-Hausdorff distance to a manifold of lower dimension, and the question of the continuity, in some sense, of the spectra of geometrically relevant operators. In this paper, we initiate the study of the continuity of spectra and other properties of metric spectral triples under collapse in the noncommutative realm. As a first step in this study, we work with collapse for the spectral propinquity, an analogue of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance for spectral triples introduced by the second author, i.e. a form of metric for differential structures. Inspired by results from collapse in Riemannian geometry, we begin with the study of spectral triples which decompose, in some sense, in a vertical and a horizontal direction, and we collapse these spectral triples along the vertical direction. We obtain convergence results, and by the work of the second author, we conclude continuity results for the spectra of the Dirac operators of these spectral triples. Examples include collapse of product of spectral triples with one Abelian factor, $U(1)$ principal bundles over Riemannian spin manifolds, and noncommutative principal bundles, including C*-crossed-products and other noncommutative bundles.

We introduce the universal Euler characteristic of an orbit space definable groupoid, a class of groupoids containing cocompact proper Lie groupoids as well as translation groupoids for semialgebraic group actions. Generalizing results of Gusein-Zade, Luengo, and Melle-Hernández, we show that every additive and multiplicative invariant of orbit space definable groupoids with an additional local triviality hypothesis arises as a ring homomorphism applied to the universal Euler characteristic. This in particular includes the $Γ$-orbifold Euler characteristic introduced by the first and third authors when $Γ$ is a finitely presented group. For Lie groupoids with Riemannian structures in the sense of del Hoyo-Fernandes, and for Cartan-Lie groupoids with Riemannian structures in the sense of Kotov-Strobl, we study the Riemannian structures induced on the suborbifolds of the inertia space given by images of isotropy groups. We realize the $\mathbb{Z}$-orbifold Euler characteristic as the integral of a differential form defined on the arrow space or the space of composable pairs of arrows of the original groupoid.

We then prove a necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence of the actions of various groups of isometries, in the sense of the covariant version of the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity -- a noncommutative analogue of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance -- when working in the context of inductive limits of quantum compact metric spaces and metric spectral triples. In the context of metric geometry, we introduce a new necessary and sufficient condition for the convergence of an inductive sequence of quantum compact metric spaces for the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity, which is a noncommutative analogue of the Gromov-Hausdorff distance for compact metric spaces. This condition is easy to verify in many examples, such as quantum compact metric spaces associated to AF algebras or certain twisted convolution C*-algebras of discrete inductive limit groups. Our condition also implies the convergence of an inductive sequence of spectral triples in the sense of the spectral propinquity, a generalization of the Gromov-Hausdorff propinquity on quantum compact metric spaces to the space of metric spectral triples. In particular we show the convergence of the state spaces of the underlying C*-algebras as quantum compact metric spaces, and also the convergence of the quantum dynamics induced by the Dirac operators in the spectral triples. We apply these results to new classes of inductive limit of even spectral triples on noncommutative solenoids and Bunce-Deddens C*-algebras. Our construction, which involves length functions with bounded doubling, adds geometric information and highlights the structure of these twisted C*-algebras as inductive limits.

Our spectral triples induce a Leibniz Lip-norm on the state spaces of the noncommutative solenoids, giving them the structure of Leibniz quantum compact metric spaces. By applying methods of R. Floricel and A. Ghorbanpour, we also show that our odd spectral triples on noncommutative solenoids can be considered as direct limits of spectral triples on rotation algebras. In the final section we prove a noncommutative Wiener's lemma and show that our odd spectral triples can be defined to have an associated smooth dense subalgebra which is stable under the holomorphic functional calculus, thus answering a question of B. Eilers et al. have recently completed the geometric classification of unital graph $C^\ast$-algebras up to Morita equivalence using a set of moves on the corresponding digraphs. We explore the question of whether these moves preserve the nonzero elements of the spectrum of a finite digraph, which in this paper is allowed to have loops and parallel edges. We consider several different digraph spectra that have been studied in the literature, answering this question for the Laplace and adjacency spectra, their skew counterparts, the symmetric adjacency spectrum, the adjacency spectrum of the line digraph, the Hermitian adjacency spectrum, and the normalized Laplacian, considering in most cases two ways that these spectra can be defined in the presence of parallel edges. We show that the adjacency spectra of the digraph and line digraph are preserved by a subset of the moves, and the skew adjacency and Laplace spectra are preserved by the Cuntz splice. We give counterexamples to show that the other spectra are not preserved by the remaining moves. The same results hold if one restricts to the class of strongly connected digraphs.

We consider groupoids constructed from a finite number of commuting local homeomorphisms acting on a compact metric space, and study generalized Ruelle operators and $ C^{\ast} $-algebras associated to these groupoids. We provide a new characterization of $ 1 $-cocycles on these groupoids taking values in a locally compact abelian group, given in terms of $ k $-tuples of continuous functions on the unit space satisfying certain canonical identities. Using this, we develop an extended Ruelle-Perron-Frobenius theory for dynamical systems of several commuting operators ($ k $-Ruelle triples and commuting Ruelle operators). Results on KMS states on $ C^{\ast} $-algebras constructed from these groupoids are derived. When the groupoids being studied come from higher-rank graphs, our results recover existence-uniqueness results for KMS states associated to the graphs.

For a finitely presented discrete group $Γ$, we introduce two generalizations of the orbifold Euler characteristic and $Γ$-orbifold Euler characteristic to a class of proper topological groupoids large enough to include all cocompact proper Lie groupoids. The $Γ$-Euler characteristic is defined as an integral with respect to the Euler characteristic over the orbit space of the groupoid, and the $Γ$-inertia Euler characteristic is the usual Euler characteristic of the $Γ$-inertia space associated to the groupoid. A key ingredient is the application of o-minimal structures to study orbit spaces of topological groupoids. Our main result is that the $Γ$-Euler characteristic and $Γ$-inertia Euler characteristic coincide and generalize the higher-order orbifold Euler characteristics of Gusein-Zade, Luengo, and Melle-Hernández from the case of a translation groupoid by a compact Lie group and $Γ= \mathbb{Z}^\ell$. By realizing the $Γ$-Euler characteristic as the usual Euler characteristic of a topological space, we demonstrate that it is Morita invariant in the category of topological groupoids and satisfies familiar properties of the classical Euler characteristic. We give an additional formulation of the $Γ$-Euler characteristic for a cocompact proper Lie groupoid in terms of a finite covering by orbispace charts. In the case that the groupoid is an abelian extension of a translation groupoid by a bundle of groups, we relate the $Γ$-Euler characteristics to those of the translation groupoid and bundle of groups.

They found that these KMS states are determined by the periodicity of $Λ$ and a certain Borel probability measure $M$ on the infinite path space $Λ^\infty$ of $Λ$. Here we consider different dynamics on $C^*(Λ)$, which arise from a functor $y: Λ\to \mathbb{R}_+$ and were first proposed by McNamara in his thesis. We show that the KMS states associated to McNamara's dynamics are again parametrized by the periodicity group of $Λ$ and a family of Borel probability measures on the infinite path space. Indeed, these measures also arise as Hausdorff measures on $Λ^\infty$, and the associated Hausdorff dimension is intimately linked to the inverse temperatures at which KMS states exist. Our construction of the metrics underlying the Hausdorff structure uses the functors $y: Λ\to \mathbb{R}_+$; the stationary $k$-Bratteli diagram associated to $Λ$; and the concept of exponentially self-similar weights on Bratteli diagrams.

Moreover, we prove that this spectral triple has a close connection to the wavelet decomposition of $Λ^\infty$ which was introduced by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer in 2015. We first introduce the concept of stationary $k$-Bratteli diagrams, in order to associate a family of ultrametric Cantor sets, and their associated Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples, to a finite, strongly connected higher-rank graph $Λ$. We then study the zeta function, abscissa of convergence, and Dixmier trace associated to the Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples of these Cantor sets, and show these spectral triples are $ζ$-regular in the sense of Pearson and Bellissard. We obtain an integral formula for the Dixmier trace given by integration against a measure $μ$, and show that $μ$ is a rescaled version of the measure $M$ on $Λ^\infty$ which was introduced by an Huef, Laca, Raeburn, and Sims. Finally, we investigate the eigenspaces of a family of Laplace-Beltrami operators associated to the Dirichlet forms of the spectral triples. We show that these eigenspaces refine the wavelet decomposition of $L^2(Λ^\infty, M)$ which was constructed by Farsi et al.

In this monograph we undertake a comprehensive study of separable representations (as well as their unitary equivalence classes) of $C^*$-algebras associated to strongly connected finite $k$-graphs $Λ$. We begin with the representations associated to the $Λ$-semibranching function systems introduced by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer in \cite{FGKP}, by giving an alternative characterization of these systems which is more easily verified in examples. We present a variety of such examples, one of which we use to construct a new faithful separable representation of any row-finite source-free $k$-graph. Next, we analyze the monic representations of $C^*$-algebras of finite $k$-graphs. We completely characterize these representations, generalizing results of Dutkay and Jorgensen \cite{dutkay-jorgensen-monic} and Bezuglyi and Jorgensen \cite{bezuglyi-jorgensen} for Cuntz and Cuntz-Krieger algebras respectively. We also describe a universal representation for non-negative monic representations of finite, strongly connected $k$-graphs. To conclude, we characterize the purely atomic and permutative representations of $k$-graph $C^*$-algebras, and discuss the relationship between these representations and the classes of representations introduced earlier.

Finally, we demonstrate that one of the above Milnor modules always splits into the direct sum of the rank-one free module and a rank-one non-free projective module that is \emph{not} associated with $S^5_H$.

In this paper, we present two new ways to associate a spectral triple to a higher-rank graph $Λ$. Moreover, we prove that these spectral triples are intimately connected to the wavelet decomposition of the infinite path space of $Λ$ which was introduced by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer in 2015. We first introduce the concept of stationary $k$-Bratteli diagrams, to associate a family of ultrametric Cantor sets to a finite, strongly connected higher-rank graph $Λ$. Then we show that under mild hypotheses, the Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples of such Cantor sets have a regular $ζ$-function, whose abscissa of convergence agrees with the Hausdorff dimension of the Cantor set, and that the measure $μ$ induced by the associated Dixmier trace agrees with the measure $M$ on the infinite path space $Λ^\infty$ of $Λ$ which was introduced by an Huef, Laca, Raeburn, and Sims. Furthermore, we prove that $μ= M$ is a rescaled version of the Hausdorff measure of the ultrametric Cantor set. From work of Julien and Savinien, we know that for $ζ$-regular Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples, the eigenspaces of the associated Laplace-Beltrami operator constitute an orthogonal decomposition of $L^2(Λ^\infty, μ)$; we show that this orthogonal decomposition refines the wavelet decomposition of Farsi et al. In addition, we generalize a spectral triple of Consani and Marcolli from Cuntz-Krieger algebras to higher-rank graph $C^*$-algebras, and prove that the wavelet decomposition of Farsi et al.~describes the eigenspaces of its Dirac operator.

For a closed Riemannian orbifold $O$, we compare the spectra of the Laplacian, acting on functions or differential forms, to the Neumann spectra of the orbifold with boundary given by a domain $U$ in $O$ whose boundary is a smooth manifold. Generalizing results of several authors, we prove that the metric of $O$ can be perturbed to ensure that the first $N$ eigenvalues of $U$ and $O$ are arbitrarily close to one another. This involves a generalization of the Hodge decomposition to the case of orbifolds with manifold boundary. Using these results, we study the behavior of the Laplace spectrum on functions or forms of a connected sum of two Riemannian orbifolds as one orbifold in the pair is collapsed to a point. We show that the limits of the eigenvalues of the connected sum are equal to those of the non-collapsed orbifold in the pair. In doing so, we prove the existence of a sequence of orbifolds with singular points whose eigenvalue spectra come arbitrarily close to the spectrum of a manifold, and a sequence of manifolds whose eigenvalue spectra come arbitrarily close to the eigenvalue spectrum of an orbifold with singular points. We also consider the question of prescribing the first part of the spectrum of an orientable orbifold.

In this article we provide an identification between the wavelet decompositions of certain fractal representations of $C^*-$algebras of directed graphs of M. Marcolli and A. Paolucci, and the eigenspaces of Laplacians associated to spectral triples constructed from Cantor fractal sets that are the infinite path spaces of Bratteli diagrams associated to the representations, with a particular emphasis on wavelets for representations of $\mathcal{O}_D$. In particular, in this setting we use results of J. Pearson and J. Bellissard, and A. Julien and J. Savinien, to construct first the spectral triple and then the Laplace Beltrami operator on the associated Cantor set. We then prove that in certain cases, the orthogonal wavelet decomposition and the decomposition via orthogonal eigenspaces match up precisely. We give several explicit examples, including an example related to a Sierpinski fractal, and compute in detail all the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenspaces of the Laplace Beltrami operators for the equal weight case for representations of Cuntz algebras, and in the uneven weight case for certain representations of $\mathcal{O}_2$, and show how the eigenspaces and wavelet subspaces at different levels are related.

Here we give an overview on the connection between wavelet theory and representation theory for graph $C^{\ast}$-algebras, including the higher-rank graph $C^*$-algebras of A. Kumjian and D. Pask. Many authors have studied different aspects of this connection over the last 20 years, and we begin this paper with a survey of the known results. We then discuss several new ways to generalize these results and obtain wavelets associated to representations of higher-rank graphs. In \cite{FGKP}, we introduced the "cubical wavelets" associated to a higher-rank graph. Here, we generalize this construction to build wavelets of arbitrary shapes. We also present a different but related construction of wavelets associated to a higher-rank graph, which we anticipate will have applications to traffic analysis on networks. Finally, we generalize the spectral graph wavelets of \cite{hammond} to higher-rank graphs, giving a third family of wavelets associated to higher-rank graphs.

We introduce the notions of a differentiable groupoid and a differentiable stratified groupoid, generalizations of Lie groupoids in which the spaces of objects and arrows have the structures of differentiable spaces, respectively differentiable stratified spaces, compatible with the groupoid structure. After studying basic properties of these groupoids including Morita equivalence, we prove a de Rham theorem for locally contractible differentiable stratified groupoids. We then focus on the study of the inertia groupoid associated to a proper Lie groupoid. We show that the loop and the inertia space of a proper Lie groupoid can be endowed with a natural Whitney B stratification, which we call the orbit Cartan type stratification. Endowed with this stratification, the inertia groupoid of a proper Lie groupoid becomes a locally contractible differentiable stratified groupoid.

Let $Λ$ be a strongly connected, finite higher-rank graph. In this paper, we construct representations of $C^*(Λ)$ on certain separable Hilbert spaces of the form $L^2(X,μ)$, by introducing the notion of a $Λ$-semibranching function system (a generalization of the semibranching function systems studied by Marcolli and Paolucci). In particular, when $Λ$ is aperiodic, we obtain a faithful representation of $C^*(Λ)$ on $L^2(Λ^\infty, M)$, where $M$ is the Perron-Frobenius probability measure on the infinite path space $Λ^\infty$ recently studied by an Huef, Laca, Raeburn, and Sims. We also show how a $Λ$-semibranching function system gives rise to KMS states for $C^*(Λ)$. For the higher-rank graphs of Robertson and Steger, we also obtain a representation of $C^*(Λ)$ on $L^2(X, μ)$, where $X$ is a fractal subspace of $[0,1]$ by embedding $Λ^{\infty}$ into $[0,1]$ as a fractal subset $X$ of $[0,1]$. In this latter case we additionally show that there exists a KMS state for $C^*(Λ)$ whose inverse temperature is equal to the Hausdorff dimension of $X$. Finally, we construct a wavelet system for $L^2(Λ^\infty, M)$ by generalizing the work of Marcolli and Paolucci from graphs to higher-rank graphs.

We show that the twists which admit twisted vector bundles give rise to a subgroup of the Brauer group of $\mathcal{G}$. When $\mathcal{G}$ is an étale groupoid, we establish conditions (involving the classifying space $B\mathcal{G}$ of $\mathcal{G}$) which imply that a torsion twist $\mathcal{R}$ over $\mathcal{G}$ admits a twisted vector bundle.

We present generating functions for extensions of multiplicative invariants of wreath symmetric products of orbifolds presented as the quotient by the locally free action of a compact, connected Lie group in terms of orbifold sector decompositions. Particularly interesting instances of these product formulas occur for the Euler and Euler--Satake characteristics, which we compute for a class of weighted projective spaces. This generalizes results known for global quotients by finite groups to all closed, effective orbifolds. We also describe a combinatorial approach to extensions of multiplicative invariants using decomposable functors that recovers the formula for the Euler--Satake characteristic of a wreath product of a global quotient orbifold.
