Strongly correlated electrons systems may exhibit a variety of interesting phenomena, for instance, superconductivity and pseudogap, as is the case of cuprates and pnictides. In strongly correlated electron systems, it is considered essential to understand, not only the nature of the pseudogap, but also the relationship between superconductivity and the pseudogap. In order to address this question, in the present work, we investigated a one-band Hubbard model treated by the Green's function method within an n-pole approximation. In the strongly correlated regime, antiferromagnetic correlations give rise to nearly flat band regions in the nodal points of the quasiparticle bands. As a consequence, a pseudogap emerges at the antinodal points of the Fermi surface. The obtained results indicate that the same antiferromagnetic correlations responsible for a pseudogap, can also favor superconductivity, providing an increase in the superconducting critical temperature Tc.

We use the linear sigma model with quarks to study the magnetic-field-induced modifications on the longitudinal screening mass for the neutral pion at one-loop level. The effects of the magnetic field are introduced into the self-energy, which contains the contributions from all the model particles. We find that, to obtain a reasonable description for the behavior with the field strength, we need to account for the magnetic field dependence of the particle masses. We also find that the couplings need to decrease fast enough with the field strength to then reach constant and smaller values as compared to their vacuum ones. The results illustrate the need to treat the magnetic corrections to the particle masses and couplings in a self-consistent manner, accounting for the backreaction of the field effects for the magnetic field dependence of the rest of the particle species and couplings in the model.

The non-monotonic behavior of the speed of sound for isospin imbalanced strongly interacting matter, found by recent lattice QCD simulations, can be reproduced within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and Linear Sigma Model with quarks when the couplings become isospin chemical potential-dependent. The introduction of medium-dependent couplings can potentially affect the equivalence between the thermodynamic relations and their definitions from statistical mechanics. We describe the procedure to compensate for the introduction of medium-dependent couplings to preserve the correct thermodynamic identities. We find the isospin chemical potential dependence for the couplings from the isospin density LQCD data and, after finding the compensating function to correctly describe the pressure, we show that the description of the square of the speed of sound reported by LQCD is well reproduced when using the found medium-dependent couplings in both models.

Recently, first-order phase transitions have been predicted as an effect of the inclusion of quark anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) in the hot and magnetized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (NJL). These transitions appear in the chiral condensate for different combinations of AMM and magnetic fields and could lead to inverse magnetic catalysis. However, in this work, we show that the predicted first-order phase transitions are related to regularization-dependent issues. To show this, we explore, in the context of the vacuum magnetic regularization (VMR) scheme, two different scenarios: when mass-dependent (MD) and mass-independent (MI) terms are present in the subtraction of the divergences. In the MD case, as we increase the AMM value, it is observed the appearance of a nonmassive minimum in the thermodynamical potential, which induces a first-order phase transition from the massive minimum. We argue that the MD terms must be avoided in order to satisfy the predictions of Lattice QCD, and we propose a MI solution that is valid in the limit which the magnetic fields are smaller than the squared of vacuum effective quark mass.

We have estimated parallel and perpendicular components of electrical conductivity and shear viscosity of quark matter at finite magnetic field and temperature by using their one-loop Kubo expressions in the framework of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. At finite magnetic field, a non-trivial medium dependence of those quantities can be found. Previously these NJL-profiles have been addressed in relaxation time approximation, where cyclotron motion of quarks with medium dependent mass plays the key role. With respect to the earlier estimations, the present work provides further enriched profiles via Kubo framework, where field theoretical descriptions of quark transport with medium dependent mass and (Landau) quantized energy have been identified as the key ingredients. Hence the present study can be considered as the complete quantum field theoretical description of the transport coefficients in the framework of NJL model at finite temperature and magnetic field.

In this work we study the influence of external electric field and temperature on the chiral phase transition of Quantum Chromodynamics. We use the two-flavor Linear Sigma Model coupled with quarks (LSMq) in a thermal and electrized medium to evaluate the effective quark mass and the Schwinger pair production. To this end, we apply one-loop correction to the fermionic sector of the model and the simple tree-level approximation in the mesonic contributions. The electric fields strengthen the partial restoration of the chiral symmetry when applied with finite temperature in a crossover transition. The expected decrease of the pseudocritical temperature as a function of the electric field is observed until electric fields reach $eE\approx 13.5 m_π^2$. For stronger electric fields, the effect is the opposite, which is in a very good agreement with previous results obtained with four-point non-renormalizable models, showing that this effect is independent of renormalizability issues. We also show the thermal and electric effects on the behavior of the Schwinger pair production.

We use the two-flavor linear sigma model with quarks to study the phase structure of isospin asymmetric matter at zero temperature. The meson degrees of freedom provide the mean field chiral- and isospin-condensates on top of which we compute the effective potential accounting for constituent quark fluctuations at one-loop order. Using the renormalizability of the model, we absorb the ultraviolet divergences into suitable counter-terms that are added respecting the original structure of the theory. These counter-terms are determined from the stability conditions which require the effective potential to have minima in the condensates directions at the classical values, as well as the transition from the non-condensed to the condensed phase to be smooth as a function of the isospin chemical potential. We use the model to study the evolution of the condensates as well as the pressure, energy and isospin densities and the sound velocity as functions of the isospin chemical potential. The approach does a good average description up to isospin chemical potentials values not too large as compared to the vacuum pion mass.

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is widely used to study strong-interaction phenomena in vacuum and quark matter. Since the model is nonrenormalizable, one needs to work within a specific regularization scheme to obtain finite results. Here we show that a commonly used cutoff regularization scheme leads to unphysical results, such as superluminal speed of sound and wrong high-temperature behavior of the specific heat and other thermodynamical quantities. Such a troublesome feature of the cutoff regularization invalidates the model for temperature and baryon density values relevant to the phenomenology of heavy-ion collisions and compact stars. We show that the source of the problems stems from cutting off momentum modes in finite integrals depending on thermal distribution functions in the grand canonical potential. The problems go away when taking into account the full momentum range of those integrals. Explicit examples are worked out in the SU(2)-flavor version of the model.

We assume that their cores contain deconfined quark matter and include the effects of axions via an effective 't Hooft determinant interaction. The hadronic crusts are described using different approaches in order to make our results more general. We find that the presence of axions stabilizes massive hybrid neutron stars against gravitational collapse by weakening the deconfinement phase transition and bringing it to lower densities. This enables to reproduce hybrid neutron stars in agreement with modern astrophysical constraints.

In this work we calculate the pole-mass of the $ρ^0$ meson with different spin projections $s_z=0,\pm 1$ in the context of the magnetized two-flavor Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model. Making use of the mean field approximation to obtain the effective quark mass as a function of the magnetic field, we apply the random phase approximation (RPA) to the vector channel in order to calculate the polarization function for each spin component. We adopt the magnetic field independent regularization (MFIR) in our evaluations as a method of separating divergences and the Pauli-Villars regularization for the vacuum contributions. The $ρ^0$ meson mass with spin projection $s_z=\pm 1$ is always catalysed with the magnitude of the magnetic field, showing good agreement with Lattice QCD results. The mass projection $s_z=0$ has a non-monotonic behavior, decreasing until the minimum at $eB\lesssim 0.15$ GeV$^2$, which is in contrast with available LQCD data.

In this work, we consider the effect of a constant anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) of quarks in the SU(2) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model in the mean field approximation. To this end, we use the Schwinger {\it ansatz}, which represents a linear magnetic field term in the Lagrangian. A regularization method inspired in the vacuum magnetic regularization (VMR) is adopted to avoid ultraviolet divergences. Our results indicate a smooth decrease of the pseudocritical temperature and quark condensates for magnetic fields $B \leq 0.1$ GeV$^2$ when a sizable AMM is considered. We found only a small window for Inverse Magnetic Catalysis (IMC), in contradiction with NJL predictions made in the literature. For a low value of AMM, we observe for all ranges of magnetic fields considered that the pseudocritical temperature increases with the magnetic field, indicating only Magnetic Catalysis (MC). In our approach, for nonvanishing quark AMM, the chiral symmetry restoration happens always as a smooth crossover and never turns into a first order phase transition.

The model Lagrangian features flavor SU(3) four-quark interactions and six-quark interactions that break the UA(1) symmetry. We incorporate thermomagnetic effects in the four-quark coupling. The model predicts magnetic catalysis at low temperatures and inverse magnetic catalysis at temperatures close to the pseudocritical temperature of the QCD transition, in agreement with lattice QCD results. We compute the pressure at the mean field level and obtain the magnetization of quark matter. We adopt the recently proposed vacuum magnetic regularization (VMR) scheme, in that divergent quark mass independent contributions are not subtracted, thereby avoiding unphysical results for the magnetization. We devote special attention to the renormalized magnetization, a projected quantity that allows for direct comparisons with lattice QCD simulations. Our results are in very good agreement with lattice data indicating a paramagnetic behavior for quark matter.

We use the linear sigma model with quarks to find the magnetic field-induced modifications to the neutral pion mass at one-loop level. The magnetic field effects are introduced by using charged particle propagators in the presence of a magnetic background in the strong field regime. We show that when accounting for the effects of the magnetic field on the model couplings, the vacuum sigma field and the neutral pion self-energy, the neutral pion mass decreases monotonically as a function of the field strength. We find an excellent qualitative and quantitative agreement with recent lattice QCD calculations, reproducing the monotonically decreasing trend with the field strength as well as the decrease when lattice data approaches the physical vacuum pion mass from larger values.

We compute the magnetic field-induced modifications to the boson self-coupling and the boson-fermion coupling, in the static limit, using an effective model of QCD, the linear sigma model with quarks. The former is computed for arbitrary field strengths as well as using the strong field approximation. The latter is obtained in the strong field limit. The arbitrary field result for the boson self-coupling depends on the ultraviolet renormalization scale and this dependence cannot be removed by a simple vacuum subtraction. Using the strong field result as a guide, we find the appropriate choice for this scale and discuss the physical implications. The boson-fermion coupling depends on the Schwinger's phase and we show how this phase can be treated consistently in such a way that the magnetic field induced vertex modification is both gauge invariant and can be written with an explicit factor corresponding to energy-momentum conservation for the external particles. Both couplings show a modest decrease with the field strength.

The importance of implementing a proper regularization procedure in order to treat thermo and magnetic contributions within nonrenormalizable theories is investigated. Our study suggests that potential divergences should be isolated into the vacuum and purely magnetic contributions and then regularized while the convergent thermomagnetic contributions should be integrated over the full momentum range. This prescription is illustrated by applying the proper time formalism to the two flavor Polyakov--Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, whose magnetic field dependent coupling has been recently determined. Observables such as the pressure, magnetization, speed of sound squared, and specific heat evaluated within our scheme are compared with results furnished by other three possible prescriptions. We show that these quantities display a thermomagnetic behavior which is physically more consistent when our scheme is adopted. In particular, we demonstrate that naively regulating the (entangled) vacuum, magnetic and thermomagnetic contributions leads to physically inconsistent results especially at the high temperature domain.

In this article, there are 18 sections discussing various current topics in the field of relativistic heavy-ion collisions and related phenomena, which will serve as a snapshot of the current state of the art.
Section 1 reviews experimental results of some recent light-flavored particle production data from ALICE collaboration. Other sections are mostly theoretical in nature.
Very strong but transient magnetic field created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions could have important observational consequences. This has generated a lot of theoretical activity in the last decade. Sections 2, 7, 9, 10 and 11 deal with the effects of the magnetic field on the properties of the QCD matter. There are several unanswered questions about the QCD phase diagram. Sections 3, 11 and 18 discuss various aspects of the QCD phase diagram and phase transitions.
Recent years have witnessed interesting developments in foundational aspects of hydrodynamics and their application to heavy-ion collisions. Sections 12, 15, 16 and 17 of this article probe some aspects of this exciting field.
Transport coefficients together with their temperature- and density-dependence, are essential inputs in hydrodynamical calculations. Sections 5, 8 and 14 deal with calculation/estimation of various transport coefficients (shear and bulk viscosity, thermal conductivity, relaxation times, etc.) of quark matter and hadronic matter.
Sections 4, 6 and 13 deals with interesting new developments in the field. Section 4 discusses color dipole gluon distribution function at small transverse momentum in the form of a series of Bells polynomials. Section 6 discusses the properties of Higgs boson in the quark gluon plasma using Higgs-quark interaction. Section 13 discusses modification of coalescence model to incorporate viscous corrections and application of this model.

The effects of net strangeness on charge and isospin fractions, chemical potentials, and temperature are studied in the context of the Chiral Mean Field (CMF) model that incorporates chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement. The extent to which these quantities are probed during deconfinement in conditions expected to exist in protoneutron stars, binary neutron-star mergers, and heavy-ion collisions is analyzed via the construction of 3-dimensional phase diagrams.

Some of the advances made in the literature to understand the phase transitions of quark matter in the presence of strong magnetic field and finite temperature (zero quark chemical potential) are reviewed. We start by discussing the physics behind the Magnetic catalysis (MC) at zero/finite temperature and then focus on the lattice predictions for inverse magnetic catalysis (IMC) at high temperature and strong magnetic fields. Possible explanations for the IMC are covered as well. Finally, we discuss recent efforts to modify QCD (quantum chromodynamics) effective models in order to reproduce the IMC observed on the lattice simulations. We emphasize the fact that applying thermo-magnetic effects on the coupling constant of the NJL model significantly improve the effectiveness of the NJL model to obtain a reasonable physical description of hot and magnetized quark matter being in agreement with lattice results.

The deconfinement and chiral phase transitions are studied in the context of the electrized quark matter at finite temperature in the two-flavor Polyakov-Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Using the mean field approximation and an electric field independet regularization we show that the effect of temperature and/or electric fields is to partially restore the chiral symmetry. The deconfinement phase transition is slightly affected by the magnitude of the electric field. To this end we show how the effective quark masses and the expectation value of the Polyakov Loop are affected by the electric fields at finite temperatures. As a very interesting result, the pseudocritical temperatures for chiral symmetry restoration and deconfinement decrease as we increase the magnitude of the electric fields, however, both start to increase after some critical value of the electric field.

We studied the effect of a strong magnetic field ($B$) on the electrical conductivity of hot quark matter. The electrical conductivity is a key transport coefficient determining the time dependence and strength of magnetic fields generated in a relativistic heavy-ion collision. A~magnetic field induces Hall anisotropic conduction, phase-space Landau-level quantization and, if sufficiently strong, interferes with prominent QCD phenomena such as dynamical quark mass generation, likely affecting the quark matter electrical conductivity, which depends strongly on the quark masses. To address these issues, we used a quasi-particle description of quark matter in which the electric charge carriers are constituent quarks with temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent masses predicted by a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The model accurately describes recent lattice QCD results showing magnetic catalysis at low temperatures and inverse magnetic catalysis at temperatures close to the pseudo-critical temperature ($T_{\rm pc}$) of the QCD phase transition. We found that the magnetic field increases the conductivity component parallel to it and decreases the transverse component, in qualitative agreement with recent lattice QCD results. In addition, we found that: (1)~the space anisotropy of the conductivity increases with~$B$, (2)~the longitudinal conductivity increases due to phase-space Landau-level quantization, (3)~a lowest Landau level approximation behaves poorly for temperatures close to $T_{\rm pc}$, and (5)~inverse magnetic catalysis leaves a distinctive signal in all components of the conductivity, a prominent peak at $T_{\rm pc}$. Our study adds to the existing body of work on the hot quark matter electrical conductivity by incorporating nontrivial temperature and magnetic field effects on dynamical mass generation.

The decay of a heavy neutral scalar particle into fermions and into charged scalars are analyzed when in the presence of an external magnetic field and finite temperature. Working in the one-loop approximation for the study of these decay channels, it is shown that the magnetic field leads in general to a suppression of the decay width whenever the kinematic constrain depends explicitly on the magnetic field. Our results are also compared with common approximations found in the literature, e.g., when the magnitude of the external magnetic field is smaller than the decaying product particle masses, i.e., in the weak field approximation, and in the opposite case, i.e., in the strong field approximation. Possible applications of our results are discussed.

We assume two scenarios, chemically equilibrated charge neutral matter present in the interior of compact stars and zero-strangeness isospin-symmetric matter created in nuclear experiments. We show that the magnetization oscillates with density but in a much more smooth form than what was previously shown in the literature. As a consequence, we do not see the unphysical behavior in the pressure in the direction perpendicular to the magnetic field that was previously found. The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with two flavors, three colors and diquark interactions is analyzed in the context of optimized perturbation theory (OPT). Corrections to the thermodynamical potential that go beyond the large-$N_c$ (LN) approximation are taken into account, and the region of the phase diagram corresponding to intermediate chemical potentials and very low temperatures is explored. The simultaneous presence of both the quark-antiquark and diquark condensates can cause the system to behave as a fluid composed of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) or a color superconductor one, in the form of a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid. The BEC-BCS crossover is then studied in the nonperturbative OPT scheme. The results obtained in the context of the OPT method are then contrasted with those obtained in the LN approximation. We show that there are values for the coupling constants related to quark-quark and quark-antiquark interactions where the corrections beyond LN brought by the OPT method can influence the behavior of the diquark condensate and the effective quark mass as a function of the baryon chemical potential. These changes in the behavior of the phase structure of the model modify the location of the critical point related to the phase structure as a whole of the model. Also, when we impose the color neutrality condition, our results show that the nature of the phase transition can change as well, shifting the ratio of the quark-antiquark and quark-quark interactions to higher values in the OPT case as compared to the LN approximation.

We employ a magnetic field dependent coupling, $G(eB)$, fitted to reproduce lattice QCD results for the quark condensates. Divergent quantities are handled with a magnetic field independent regularization scheme in order to avoid unphysical oscillations. A comparison between the running and the fixed couplings reveals that the former produces results much closer to the predictions from recent lattice calculations. In particular, we find that the $π_0$ meson mass systematically decreases when the magnetic field increases while the scalar mass remains almost constant. We also investigate how the magnetic background influences other mesonic properties such as $f_{π_0}$ and $g_{π_0 q q}$.

The OPT results are shown to be stable even at large couplings and to have better convergence properties than the ones produced in the $1/N$-expansion. It is also shown that the principle of minimal sensitive optimization procedure used in conjunction with the OPT method tends to always produce better results, in particular when applied directly to the self-energy.

The phenomenon of inverse magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry in QCD predicted by lattice simulations can be reproduced within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model if the coupling~$G$ of the model decreases with the strength $B$ of the magnetic field and temperature~$T$. The thermo-magnetic dependence of $G(B,T)$ is obtained by fitting recent lattice QCD predictions for the chiral transition order parameter. Different thermodynamic quantities of magnetized quark matter evaluated with $G(B, T)$ are compared with the ones obtained at constant coupling, $G$. The model with $G(B,T)$ predicts a more dramatic chiral transition as the field intensity increases. In addition, the pressure and magnetization always increase with $B$ for a given temperature. Being parametrized by four magnetic field dependent coefficients and having a rather simple exponential thermal dependence our accurate ansatz for the coupling constant can be easily implemented to improve typical model applications to magnetized quark matter.

The BEC-BCS crossover for a NJL model with diquark interactions is studied in the presence of an external magnetic field. Particular attention is paid to different regularization schemes used in the literature. A thorough comparison of results is performed for the case of a cold and magnetized two-color NJL model. According to our results, the critical chemical potential for the BEC transition exhibits a clear inverse magnetic catalysis effect for magnetic fields in the range $ 1 \lesssim eB/m_π^2 \lesssim 20 $. As for the BEC-BCS crossover, the corresponding critical chemical potential is very weakly sensitive to magnetic fields up to $eB \sim 9\ m_π^2$, showing a much smaller inverse magnetic catalysis as compared to the BEC transition, and displays a strong magnetic catalysis from this point on.

Although asymptotic freedom is an essential feature of QCD, it is absent in effective chiral quark models like the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio and linear sigma models. Although asymptotic freedom is an essential feature of QCD, it is absent in effective chiral quark models like the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio and linear sigma models. In this work we advocate that asymptotic freedom plays a key role in the recently observed discrepancies between results of lattice QCD simulations and quark models regarding the behavior of the pseudocritical temperature $T_{\rm pc}$ for chiral symmetry restoration in the presence of a magnetic field $B$. We show that the lattice predictions that $T_{\rm pc}$ decreases with $B$ can be reproduced within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model if the coupling constant $G$ of the model decreases with $B$ and the temperature. Without aiming at numerical precision, we support our claim by considering a simple ansatz for $G$ that mimics the asymptotic freedom behavior of the QCD coupling constant $1/α_s \sim \ln (eB/Λ^2_{QCD})$ for large values of $B$.

Abstract:
We investigate the competition between the superconducting and the excitonic phases on Dirac electrons on a bipartite planar lattice. The conditions for the appearance of superconductivity or excitonic condensate are given by the minima of the free energy and our results are explained.

Abstract:
The thermodynamics of a massless scalar field with a quartic interaction is studied up to third order in the Optimized Perturbation Theory (OPT) method. A comparison with other nonperturbative approaches is performed such that the reliability of OPT is accessed.
