AC power cycling tests allow the most realistic reliability assessment by applying close to real stress to the device or module under test to meet functional safety standards, which is highly critical for traction applications. This paper presents a comprehensive guideline and shares critical know-how to develop a 120 KVA AC power cycling test setup for high-power Silicon Carbide (SiC) modules. As of today, traction applications can not generate an early warning signal for drivers to replace critical components on time. For this purpose, the suitable precursors for all dominant failure mechanisms are discussed, and the corresponding condition monitoring tools are proposed to monitor the device aging on power converters. These condition monitoring tools are integrated into the built-in desaturation protection circuit of the electric vehicle (EV) gate driver for low-cost, practical implementation. The on-resistance of all twelve switches is monitored online as a temperature-sensitive electrical parameter (TSEP) to measure the junction temperature of the devices. To avoid heavy processing load in the microcontroller, the out-of-order equivalent time sampling technique is developed for data sampling, which leads to a measurement error of less than 1.5%. In addition, the design considerations regarding common mode noise and aging effect on DESAT protection are investigated, and experimental findings are presented.

We study a fundamental generalization of the Traveling Salesman Problem, namely $L_p$ TSP, where the objective is to minimize an aggregated measure of the delay in services, quantified by the Minkowski $p$-norm of the delay vector. We present efficient combinatorial and Linear Programming algorithms for approximating $L_p$ TSP on general metrics. We provide several approximation algorithms for the $L_p$ TSP problem, including $4.27$ & $10.92$-approximation algorithms for single & multi vehicle $L_2$ TSP, called the Traveling Firefighter Problem. Among other contributions, we provide an $8$-approximation and a $1.78$ inapproximability for All-Norm TSP problem, addressing scenarios where one does not know the ideal cost function, or is seeking simultaneous approximation with respect to any cost function.

To improve the reliability of these converters, redundant switch configuration can be employed which reduce the failure rates of the power switches significantly. However, evaluation reliability of the interleaved converters equipped with redundant switch configurations may be complex. This paper aims to simplify the reliability Analysis of interleaved converters considering mission profile and redundant switch configuration. Different possible configurations of the studied converter are shown as Markov chain states in the proposed method, which simplify the reliability and failure rates Analysis. The effect of different parameters such as the converter power level, switch configuration type, and operation modes are derived and a better insight into the effectiveness of the switch configuration on improving the reliability is provided.

Fault detection and reconfiguration in fault-tolerant converters may complicated and necessitate using all-purpose microprocessors and high-speed sensors to guarantee the satisfactory performance of power converters. Therefore, providing fault-clearing feature without increasing the processing and sensing burdens and reducing the transition time between faulty to normal state are of great importance. This research proposes a new redundant-switch configuration to address the mentioned challenges. The proposed configuration uses one diode and two fuses to eliminate the faulty switch and replace the reserve one, spontaneously. Open-circuit fault in the proposed configuration is clarified instantly. Moreover, the short-circuit fault is dealt as an open-circuit fault by using a fuse. Thus, the fault-tolerant feature of the proposed switch configuration is achieved without using a complex, versatile and multifaceted fault managing unit. Resultant behaviors of the case studies are derived using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Also, steady-state thermal distribution of power switches which are implemented on a monolith heat sink, analyzed in COMSOL Multi-physics environment. Finally, the viability of the proposed configuration is demonstrated by a laboratory-scaled prototype.

The proposed structure converter has been derived from the fundamental Zeta converter, in both of which only a single switch is employed. The voltage gain ratio has considerably enhanced in this converter with the absence of using switched capacity. To magnify voltage gain of the converter, a coupled-inductor has adopted. Increase and decrease of gain by changing the ratio of coupled-inductor assist the duty cycle. The number of components is low in this structure. The operating principle and evaluation of the proposed converter, considering designing approaches for elements, are discussed in detail. The minimum linear ordering problem (MLOP) generalizes well-known combinatorial optimization problems such as minimum linear arrangement and minimum sum set cover. The minimum linear ordering problem (MLOP) generalizes well-known combinatorial optimization problems such as minimum linear arrangement and minimum sum set cover. MLOP seeks to minimize an aggregated cost $f(\cdot)$ due to an ordering $σ$ of the items (say $[n]$), i.e., $\min_σ \sum_{i\in [n]} f(E_{i,σ})$, where $E_{i,σ}$ is the set of items mapped by $σ$ to indices $[i]$. Despite an extensive literature on MLOP variants and approximations for these, it was unclear whether the graphic matroid MLOP was NP-hard. We settle this question through non-trivial reductions from mininimum latency vertex cover and minimum sum vertex cover problems. We further propose a new combinatorial algorithm for approximating monotone submodular MLOP, using the theory of principal partitions. This is in contrast to the rounding algorithm by Iwata, Tetali, and Tripathi [ITT2012], using Lovász extension of submodular functions. We show a $(2-\frac{1+\ell_{f}}{1+|E|})$-approximation for monotone submodular MLOP where $\ell_{f}=\frac{f(E)}{\max_{x\in E}f(\{x\})}$ satisfies $1 \leq \ell_f \leq |E|$. Our theory provides new approximation bounds for special cases of the problem, in particular a $(2-\frac{1+r(E)}{1+|E|})$-approximation for the matroid MLOP, where $f = r$ is the rank function of a matroid. We further show that minimum latency vertex cover (MLVC) is $\frac{4}{3}$-approximable, by which we also lower bound the integrality gap of its natural LP relaxation, which might be of independent interest.

The objective is to schedule a destination visit sequence for a traveler of unit speed to minimize the Minkowski $p$-norm of the resulting vector of visit/service times. For $p = \infty$ the problem becomes a path variant of the TSP, and for $p = 1$ it defines the Traveling Repairman Problem (TRP), both at the center of classical combinatorial optimization. We provide an approximation preserving polynomial-time reduction of $L_p$-TSP to the segmented-TSP Problem [Sitters '14] and further study the case of $p = 2$, which we term the Traveling Firefighter Problem (TFP), when the cost due to a delay in service is quadratic in time.
We also study the all-norm-TSP problem [Golovin et al. '08], in which the objective is to find a route that is (approximately) optimal with respect to the minimization of any norm of the visit times, and improve corresponding (in)approximability bounds on metric spaces.

We study the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) in the context of the Max-Cut problem. Near-term (noisy) quantum devices are only able to (accurately) execute QAOA at low circuit depths while QAOA requires a relatively high circuit-depth in order to "see" the whole graph. We introduce a classical pre-processing step that initializes QAOA with a biased superposition of all possible cuts in the graph, referred to as a warm-start. In particular, our initialization informs QAOA by a solution to a low-rank semidefinite programming relaxation of the Max-Cut problem. Our experimental results show that this variant of QAOA, called QAOA-Warm, is able to outperform standard QAOA on lower circuit depths with less training time (in the optimization stage for QAOA's variational parameters). We provide experimental evidence as well as theoretical intuition on performance of the proposed framework.

One of the essential aspects of power system planning is generation expansion planning (GEP). The purpose of GEP is to enhance construction planning and reduce the costs of installing different types of power plants. This paper proposes a method based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) for GEP in the presence of wind power plants. Since it is desired to integrate the maximum possible wind power production in GEP, the constraints for incorporating different levels of wind energy in power generation are investigated comprehensively. This will allow obtaining the maximum reasonable amount of wind penetration in the network. Besides, due to the existence of different wind regimes, the penetration of strong and weak wind on GEP is assessed. The results show that the maximum utilization of wind power generation capacity could increase the exploitation of more robust wind regimes. Considering the growth of the wind farm industry and the cost reduction for building wind power plants, the sensitivity of GEP to the variations of this cost is investigated. The results further indicate that for a 10% reduction in the initial investment cost of wind power plants, the proposed model estimates that the overall cost will be minimized.

We study the generalized min sum set cover (GMSSC) problem, wherein given a collection of hyperedges $E$ with arbitrary covering requirements $k_e$, the goal is to find an ordering of the vertices to minimize the total cover time of the hyperedges; a hyperedge $e$ is considered covered by the first time when $k_e$ many of its vertices appear in the ordering. We give a $4.642$ approximation algorithm for GMSSC, coming close to the best possible bound of $4$, already for the classical special case (with all $k_e=1$) of min sum set cover (MSSC) studied by Feige, Lovász and Tetali, and improving upon the previous best known bound of $12.4$ due to Im, Sviridenko and van der Zwaan. Our algorithm is based on transforming the LP solution by a suitable kernel and applying randomized rounding. This also gives an LP-based $4$ approximation for MSSC. As part of the analysis of our algorithm, we also derive an inequality on the lower tail of a sum of independent Bernoulli random variables, which might be of independent interest and broader utility.
Another well-known special case is the min sum vertex cover (MSVC) problem, in which the input hypergraph is a graph and $k_e = 1$, for every edge. We give a $16/9$ approximation for MSVC, and show a matching integrality gap for the natural LP relaxation. This improves upon the previous best $1.999946$ approximation of Barenholz, Feige and Peleg. (The claimed $1.79$ approximation result of Iwata, Tetali and Tripathi for the MSVC turned out have an unfortunate, seemingly unfixable, mistake in it.) Finally, we revisit MSSC and consider the $\ell_p$ norm of cover-time of the hyperedges. Using a dual fitting argument, we show that the natural greedy algorithm achieves tight, up to NP-hardness, approximation guarantees of $(p+1)^{1+1/p}$, for all $p\ge 1$. For $p=1$, this gives yet another proof of the $4$ approximation for MSSC.

Experience shows that semiconductor switches in power electronics systems are the most vulnerable components. One of the most common ways to solve this reliability challenge is component-level redundant design. There are four possible configurations for the redundant design in component-level. This paper presents a comparative reliability analysis between different component-level redundant designs for solid state fault current limiter (SSFCL). The aim of the proposed analysis is to determine the more reliable component-level redundant configuration. The mean time to failure (MTTF) is used as the reliability parameter. Considering both fault types (open circuit and short circuit), the MTTFs of different configurations are calculated. It is demonstrated that more reliable configuration depends on the junction temperature of the semiconductor switches in the steady state. That junction temperature is a function of i) ambient temperature, ii) power loss of the semiconductor switch and iii) thermal resistance of heat sink. Also, results sensitivity to each parameter is investigated. The results show that in different conditions, various configurations have higher reliability. The experimental results are presented to clarify the theory and feasibility of the proposed approaches. At last, levelized costs of different configurations are analyzed for a fair comparison.

Bobkov, Houdré, and the last author [2000] introduced a Poincaré-type functional parameter, $λ_\infty$, of a graph and related it to connectivity of the graph via Cheeger-type inequalities. A work by the second author, Raghavendra, and Vempala [2013] related the complexity of $λ_\infty$ to the so-called small-set expansion (SSE) problem and further set forth the desiderata for NP-hardness of this optimization problem. We confirm the conjecture that computing $λ_\infty$ is NP-hard for weighted trees.
Beyond measuring connectivity in many applications we want to optimize it. This, via convex duality, leads to a problem in machine learning known as the Maximum Variance Embedding (MVE). The output is a function from vertices to a low dim Euclidean space, subject to bounds on Euclidean distances between neighbors. The objective is to maximize output variance. Special cases of MVE into $n$ and $1$ dims lead to absolute algebraic connectivity [1990] and spread constant [1998], that measure connectivity of the graph and its Cartesian $n$-power, respectively. MVE has other applications in measuring diffusion speed and robustness of networks, clustering, and dimension reduction.
We show that computing MVE in tree-width dims is NP-hard, while only one additional dim beyond width of a given tree-decomposition makes the problem in P. We show that MVE of a tree in 2 dims defines a non-convex yet benign optimization landscape, i.e., local=global optima. We further develop a linear time combinatorial algorithm for this case. Finally, we denote approximate Maximum Variance Embedding is tractable in significantly lower dims. For trees and general graphs, for which Maximum Variance Embedding cannot be solved in less than $2$ and $Ω(n)$ dims, we provide $1+\varepsilon$ approximation algorithms for embedding into $1$ and $O(\log n /\varepsilon^2)$ dims, respectively.

The failure rate of components that is relevant to this study and junction temperature calculation is developed, then conduction losses and switching losses of switches for different control strategies are calculated. In this paper, a new fault tolerant dc-ac converter-fed induction motor drive is proposed to maintain motor as close as possible to its desired normal operation under open- and short-circuit switch failures. The operational principles for fault detection and isolation schemes are provided. Two control strategies including predictive control and voltage mode-controlled PWM with integral-double-lead controller for two stage of the converter are presented in conjunction with the elaborated discussion. The control strategy determines appropriate switching states for continuous operation of the drive after a fault. The proposed topology makes it possible to integrate the minimal redundant hardware and full tolerance capability which is an important advantage of the proposed topology. Moreover, the most important advantages of the proposed topology are a fast response in a fault condition and low cost of the converter in comparison with the evaluated topologies. This paper proposes a new DC-AC converter with a less number of semiconductor switches and therefore gate drive and control circuit components. A salient feature of this inverter is its pure sinusoidal line-to-line voltages with no need for output filter. Also, the proposed inverter improves the voltage utilization factor of the input dc supply compared to four-switch three-phase inverter (first best topology in the literature from the number of switches point of view) and standard six-switch inverter with sine PWM. The proposed inverter is capable of operating with a wide range of output voltages from zero to the full value of the dc input voltage by appropriately altering instantaneous duty-cycle. For the first time to our knowledge, in this paper, a three-phase universal inverter with only three power-switch has been proposed. For the purpose of providing a good compromise between fast transient response and stability, a model predictive controller is proposed. All the design expressions have been derived. A comparison with other DC-AC converters is given to show the merits of the proposed converter. Finally, satisfactory circuit operation is confirmed by experimental results from a laboratory prototype.

Nowadays most research in visual recognition using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) follows the "deeper model with deeper confidence" belief to gain a higher recognition accuracy. At the same time, deeper model brings heavier computation. On the other hand, for a large chunk of recognition challenges, a system can classify images correctly using simple models or so-called shallow networks. Moreover, the implementation of CNNs faces with the size, weight, and energy constraints on the embedded devices. In this paper, we implement the adaptive switching between shallow and deep networks to reach the highest throughput on a resource-constrained MPSoC with CPU and FPGA. To this end, we develop and present a novel architecture for the CNNs where a gate makes the decision whether using the deeper model is beneficial or not. Due to resource limitation on FPGA, the idea of partial reconfiguration has been used to accommodate deep CNNs on the FPGA resources. We report experimental results on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and SVHN datasets to validate our approach. Using confidence metric as the decision making factor, only 69.8%, 71.8%, and 43.8% of the computation in the deepest network is done for CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and SVHN while it can maintain the desired accuracy with the throughput of around 400 images per second for SVHN dataset.

Deep neural networks based methods have been proved to achieve outstanding performance on object detection and classification tasks. Despite significant performance improvement, due to the deep structures, they still require prohibitive runtime to process images and maintain the highest possible performance for real-time applications. Observing the phenomenon that human vision system (HVS) relies heavily on the temporal dependencies among frames from the visual input to conduct recognition efficiently, we propose a novel framework dubbed as TKD: temporal knowledge distillation. This framework distills the temporal knowledge from a heavy neural networks based model over selected video frames (the perception of the moments) to a light-weight model. To enable the distillation, we put forward two novel procedures: 1) an Long-short Term Memory (LSTM) based key frame selection method; and 2) a novel teacher-bounded loss design. To validate, we conduct comprehensive empirical evaluations using different object detection methods over multiple datasets including Youtube-Objects and Hollywood scene dataset. Our results show consistent improvement in accuracy-speed trad-offs for object detection over the frames of the dynamic scene, compare to other modern object recognition methods.

Abstract:
IoT provides services by connecting smart devices to the Internet, and exploiting data generated by said devices to enable value-added services to individuals and businesses. In such cases, if data is exposed, tampered or lost, the service would not behave correctly. In such cases, if data is exposed, tampered or lost, the service would not behave correctly. In this article, we discuss data security in IoT applications across five dimensions: confidentiality, integrity, authenticity, non-repudiation and availability. We discuss how distributed ledger technology could be used to overcome these issues and propose to use a fog computing architecture as decentralized computational support to deploy the ledger.

Abstract:
For a completely regular space $X$ and a non-vanishing self-adjoint closed subalgebra $H$ of $C_B(X)$ which separates points from closed sets in $X$ we construct the Gelfand spectrum $\mathfrak{sp}(H)$ of $H$ as an open subspace of the compactification of $X$ generated by $H$. The simple construction of $\mathfrak{sp}(H)$ enables easier examination of its properties. We illustrate this by an example showing that the space $\mathfrak{sp}(H)$ is separable metrizable if and only if $H$ is countably generated.

Abstract:
Let $X$ be a completely regular space. For a non-vanishing self-adjoint Banach subalgebra $H$ of $C_B(X)$ which has local units we construct the spectrum $\mathfrak{sp}(H)$ of $H$ as an open subspace of the Stone-Cech compactification of $X$ which contains $X$ as a dense subspace. The construction of $\mathfrak{sp}(H)$ is simple. This enables us to study certain properties of $\mathfrak{sp}(H)$, among them are various compactness and connectedness properties. In particular, we find necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of either $H$ or $X$ under which $\mathfrak{sp}(H)$ is connected, locally connected and pseudocompact, strongly zero-dimensional, basically disconnected, extremally disconnected, or an $F$-space.

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development on country's scientific ranking as measured by H-index. Moreover, this study applies ICT development sub-indices including ICT Use, ICT Access and ICT skill to find the distinct effect of these sub-indices on country's H-index. To this purpose, required data for the panel of 14 Middle East countries over the period 1995 to 2009 is collected. Findings of the current study show that ICT development increases the H-index of the sample countries. The results also indicate that ICT Use and ICT Skill sub-indices positively contribute to higher H-index but the effect of ICT access on country's H-index is not clear.

h-index retrieved by citation indexes (Scopus, Google scholar, and Web of Science) is used to measure the scientific performance and the research impact studies based on the number of publications and citations of a scientist. It also is easily available and may be used for performance measures of scientists, and for recruitment decisions. The aim of this study is to investigate the difference between the outputs and results from these three citation databases namely Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science based upon the h-index of a group of highly cited researchers (Nobel Prize winner scientist). The purposive sampling method was adopted to collect the required data. The results showed that there is a significant difference in the h-index between three citation indexes of Scopus, Google scholar, and Web of Science; the Google scholar h-index was more than the h-index in two other databases. It was also concluded that there is a significant positive relationship between h-indices based on Google scholar and Scopus. The citation indexes of Scopus, Google scholar, and Web of Science may be useful for evaluating h-index of scientists but they have some limitations as well.

Journal impact factor (IF) as a gauge of influence and impact of a particular journal comparing with other journals in the same area of research, reports the mean number of citations to the published articles in particular journal. Although, IF attracts more attention and being used more frequently than other measures, it has been subjected to criticisms, which overcome the advantages of IF. Critically, extensive use of IF may result in destroying editorial and researchers behaviour, which could compromise the quality of scientific articles. Therefore, it is the time of the timeliness and importance of a new invention of journal ranking techniques beyond the journal impact factor.

Nowadays, the worlds scientific community has been publishing an enormous number of papers in different scientific fields. In such environment, it is essential to know which databases are equally efficient and objective for literature searches. It seems that two most extensive databases are Web of Science and Scopus. Besides searching the literature, these two databases used to rank journals in terms of their productivity and the total citations received to indicate the journals impact, prestige or influence. This article attempts to provide a comprehensive comparison of these databases to answer frequent questions which researchers ask, such as: How Web of Science and Scopus are different? In which aspects these two databases are similar? Or, if the researchers are forced to choose one of them, which one should they prefer? For answering these questions, these two databases will be compared based on their qualitative and quantitative characteristics.
