Confined motions in complex environments are ubiquitous in microbiology. These situations invariably involve the intricate coupling between fluid flow, soft boundaries, surface forces and fluctuations. In the present study, such a coupling is investigated using a novel method combining holographic microscopy and advanced statistical inference. Specifically, the Brownian motion of softmicrometric oil droplets near rigid walls is quantitatively analyzed. All the key statistical observables are reconstructed with high precision, allowing for nanoscale resolution of local mobilities and femtonewton inference of conservative or non-conservative forces. Strikingly, the analysis reveals the existence of a novel, transient, but large, soft Brownian force. The latter might be of crucial importance for microbiological and nanophysical transport, target finding or chemical reactions in crowded environments, and hence the whole life machinery.

The unsteady hydrodynamic drag exerted on an oscillating sphere near a planar wall is addressed experimentally, theoretically, and numerically. The experiments are performed by using colloidal-probe Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) in thermal noise mode. The natural resonance frequencies and quality factors are extracted from the measurement of the power spectrum density of the probe oscillation for a broad range of gap distances and Womersley numbers. The shift in the natural resonance frequency of the colloidal probe as the probe goes close to a solid wall infers the wall-induced variations of the effective mass of the probe. Interestingly, a crossover from a positive to a negative shift is observed as the Womersley number increases. In order to rationalize the results, the confined unsteady Stokes equation is solved numerically using a finite-element method, as well as asymptotic calculations. The in-phase and out-of-phase terms of the hydrodynamic drag acting on the sphere are obtained and agree well to the experimental results. All together, the experimental, theoretical, and numerical results show that the hydrodynamic force felt by an immersed sphere oscillating near a wall is highly dependent on the Womersley number.

We study the diffusion of particles confined close to a single wall and in double-wall planar channel geometries where the local diffusivities depend on the distance to the boundaries. Displacement parallel to the walls is Brownian as characterized by its variance, but it is non-Gaussian having a non-zero fourth cumulant. Establishing a link with Taylor dispersion, we calculate the fourth cumulant and the tails of the displacement distribution for general diffusivity tensors along with potentials generated by either the walls or externally, for instance gravity. Experimental and numerical studies of the motion of a colloid in the direction parallel to the wall give measured fourth cumulants which are correctly predicted by our theory. Interestingly, contrary to models of Brownian-yet-non-Gaussian diffusion, the tails of the displacement distribution are shown to be Gaussian rather than exponential. All together, our results provide additional tests and constraints for the inference of force maps and local transport properties near surfaces.

The treatise of Abū Ja'far al-Khāzin (Xth century), entitled "Commentary on the introduction of the tenth book of the treatise of Euclid" ("tafsīr sadr al-maqāla al-'āshira min kitāb Uqlīdis") exists in eight manuscripts. In this paper we present a study of this treatise, based on a first edition we have made, according to the copies of the manuscripts of Paris, Leiden and Tunis, Ahmadiya. A reading of this treatise of al-Khāzin proves that this mathematician did a profound study of the Xth book of Euclid Elements, in order to gain a global comprehension. In effect, he presented a condensed commentary, the originality of which can be felt both on the formal and the contents levels. The aim of our study is to try, as much as possible, to show this originality, referring specially to Pappus commentary of the "Xth book", the works of R. Rashed on the history of algebra and a recent work of M. Ben Miled on the Arabic commentaries of the Xth book. It appears to us that the work of al-Khāzin concerning the Xth book, is situated in the current of an Arabic tradition identified, mainly due to the works of R. Rashed, by: - an algebraic representation of the geometrical work of Euclid, - a numerical interpretation of the Euclidian notions, rendered possible by the introduction of a unity for every kind of magnitude.

It is well known that Al-Khayâm, for the first time in history, formulated a complete theory to solve third degree equations using the intersection of geometric curves and moreover solved the fourteen types of equations using this method. His solution for these equations was either using the intersection of two parabolas, a parabola and a circle, a parabola and a hyperbola, a circle and a hyperbola or two hyperbolas. His style was purely synthetic lacking any analysis which may lead to deducing any motives for his choice of the curves. Our article is centered on a pointed detail which is the justification of the choice of these curves, knowing that R. Rashed studied this choice in all of the mentioned fourteen equations. As for Descartes, whose style is as synthetic as Al-Khayâm's, we ask the same question concerning the solution of the third degree equations, searching for any possible resemblance between the two methods of solution, both mathematicians having been motivated similarly in geometric resolutions. We noticed that the choice of the fourteen curves couples was made by Al Khayyâm regarding a uniform calculation technique that he applied systematically to each equation type among the fourteen. It has appeared that the choice of the curves made by Descartes is the result of distinct calculation techniques, even though the projects of the two mathematicians are of the same essence, and their motivations are the same: finding the solution of third degree equations using the intersection of conical curves and the equations of curves.

The analytical aspects of the "Traité des équations" of Sharaf al-Dîn al-Tûsî (2nd half of the XIIth century) have been underlined by R. Rashed (1974, 1986). In the present paper, we consider again some of those aspects, when studying the "second part" of the "Traité". We find out that al-Tûsî introduces certain notions, develops reasonings and uses calculating procedures that may allow his work to be an important reference in the history of the mathematical analysis. As such, one is led to examine the foundations of a J.P. Hogendijk conjecture (1989), which situates the advanced mathematics of this "2nd Part" in the only domain of Euclidian geometry. Simultaneously, we shall try to shed some light on a passage of the "Traité", made unclear by al-Tûsî style and expression. Our study is essentially based on the texts to confirm the originality and the importance of these XIIth century mathematics. I would like to express my thanks to Prof. C. Houzel (Univ. Paris VII) and B. El-Mabsout (Univ. Paris VI), for reading the manuscript and providing their precious remarks.
