We introduce a phenomenological model for a string-derived $Z'$ scenario, and study its predictions for the mass of the W boson. In the process, we compare it to collider constraints for both pair-produced particles, Higgs boson properties, and $Z'$ searches. The future of collider physics is under investigation. With the High Luminosity LHC program lasting until the late 2030s, the next machine in the energy frontier is envisioned to appear in 30--40 years, which may be too far into the future to sustain the field. In this paper we explore the physics potential of an Upgraded Superconducting Super Collider (USSC). The Original Superconducting Super Collider (OSSC) was planned to operate at 20TeV beam energy, and with improved magnet technology and/or longer tunnel, one may envision that it can be extended to 25--30TeV beam energy. Given that the decision on the OSSC construction took place in Autumn 1988 and it was planned to start operation in the 1996-1999 period, an USSC can be constructed 10--15 years from decision and fill the gap between the end of HL--LHC and the future envisioned machines. While the main mission of the USSC will be to test the Standard Model and its electroweak and strongly interacting sectors, as a specific example we illustrate the invariant mass distribution at NNLO in QCD for a 5 TeV $Z^\prime$ in the string derived $Z^\prime$ model.

Recently, we proposed that the one-loop tadpole diagram in perturbative non-supersymmetric heterotic string vacua that contain an anomalous $U(1)$ symmetry, leads to an analog of the Fayet-Iliopoulos $D$-term in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric models, and may uplift the vacuum energy from negative to positive value. In this paper, we extend this analysis to new types of vacua, including those with Stringy Scherk-Schwarz (SSS) spontaneous supersymmetry breaking versus those with explicit breaking. We develop a criteria that facilitates the extraction of vacua with Scherk-Schwarz breaking. We develop systematic tools to analyse the T-duality property of some of the vacua and demonstrate them in several examples. The extraction of the anomalous $U(1)$ $D$-terms is obtained in two ways. The first utilises the calculation of the $U(1)$-charges from the partition function, whereas the second utilises the free fermionic classification methodology to classify large spaces of vacua and analyse the properties of the massless spectrum. The systematic classification method also ensures that the models are free from physical tachyons. We provide a systematic tool to relate the free fermionic basis vectors and one-loop Generalised GSO phases that define the string models, to the one-loop partition function in the orbifold representation. We argue that a $D$-term uplift, while rare, is possible for both the SSS class of models, as well as in those with explicit breaking. We discuss the steps needed to further develop the arguments presented here.

Moduli stabilisation is key to obtaining phenomenologically viable string models. Non-geometric compactifications, like T-duality orbifolds (T-folds), are capable of freezing many moduli. However, in this Letter we emphasise that T-folds, admitting free fermionic descriptions, can be associated with a large number of different T-folds with varying number of moduli, since the fermion pairings for bosonisation are far from unique. Consequently, in one description a fermionic construction might appear to be asymmetric, and hence non-geometric, while in another it admits a symmetric orbifold description. We introduce the notion of intrinsically asymmetric T-folds for fermionic constructions that do not admit any symmetric orbifold description after bosonisation. Finally, we argue that fermion symmetries induce map**s in the bosonised description that extend the T-duality group.

The Fayet-Iliopoulos $D$-term is a common feature in $\mathcal{N}=1$ string vacua that contain an anomalous $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, and arises from a one--loop diagram in string perturbation theory. The same diagram is generated in string vacua in which supersymmetry is broken directly at the string scale, either via spontaneous Scherk-Schwarz breaking, in which case the gravitino mass is determined by the radius of the circle used in the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism, or via explicit supersymmetry breaking by the GSO projections. We analyse the resulting would-be Fayet-Illiopoulos $D$-term in the non-supersymmetric string vacua and its contribution to the vacuum energy. A numerical estimate in an explicit tachyon-free string-derived model suggests that the would-be $D$-term contribution may uplift the vacuum energy to a positive value.

This paper aims to shed light on what becomes of discrete torsion within heterotic orbifolds when they are resolved to smooth geometries. Gauged Linear Sigma Models (GLSMs) possessing (0,2) worldsheet supersymmetry are employed as interpolations between them. This question is addressed for resolutions of the non-compact C3/Z2xZ2 and the compact T6/Z2xZ2 orbifolds to keep track of local and global aspects. The GLSMs associated with the non-compact orbifold with or without torsion are to a large extent equivalent: only when expressed in the same superfield basis, a field redefinition anomaly arises among them, which in the orbifold limit reproduces the discrete torsion phases. Previously unknown, novel resolution GLSMs for T6/Z2xZ2 are constructed. The GLSM associated with the torsional compact orbifold suffers from mixed gauge anomalies, which need to be cancelled by appropriate logarithmic superfield dependent FI-terms on the worldsheet, signalling H-flux due to NS5-branes supported at the exceptional cycles.

The Swampland Program aims to address the question, "when does an effective field theory model of quantum gravity have an ultraviolet complete embedding in string theory?", and can be regarded as a bottom-up approach to investigations of quantum gravity. An alternative top-down approach aim to explore the imprints and the constraints imposed by the string theory dualities and symmetries on the effective field theory representations of quantum gravity. The most celebrated example of this approach is mirror symmetry. Mirror symmetry was first observed in worldsheet contructions of string compactifications. It was completely unexpected from the effective field theory point of view, and its implications in that context were astounding. In terms of the moduli parameters of toroidally compactified Narain spaces, mirror symmetry can be regarded as arising from map**s of the moduli of the internal compactified space. Spinor-vector duality, which was discovered in worldsheet constructions of string vacua, is an extension of mirror symmetry that arises from map**s of the Wilson line moduli, and provide a probe to constrain and explore the moduli spaces of $(2,0)$ string compactifications. Mirror symmetry and spinor-vector duality are mere two examples of a much wider symmetry structure, whose implications are yet to be unravelled. A map** between supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua is briefly discussed. $T$-duality is another important property of string theory, and can be thought of as phase-space duality in compact space. I propose that manifest phase-space duality, and the related equivalence postulate of quantum mechanics, provide the background independent overarching principles underlying quantum gravity.

We extend the classification methodology to both $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=0$ Flipped $SU(5)$ $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic string orbifolds with asymmetric shifts. The impact of the asymmetric assignments on the phenomenological characteristics of these models is investigated. Of particular interest is the analysis of untwisted moduli fixing for various choices of asymmetric boundary conditions. Two classes of vacua with different characteristics are systematically investigated with help from SAT/SMT algorithms, which are shown to increase search efficiency by up to two orders of magnitude, as well as providing useful tools to find contradictions between various phenomenological criteria. The general form of the partition function for the space of models is explained and given for two specific example models for different choices of asymmetric boundary conditions. Additionally, the distribution of one-loop cosmological constant contributions for samples in the two different classes of models are depicted and discussed.

Resolutions of certain toroidal orbifolds, like T6/Z2xZ2, are far from unique, due to triangulation dependence of their resolved local singularities. This leads to an explosion of the number of topologically distinct smooth geometries associated to a single orbifold. By introducing a parameterisation to keep track of the triangulations used at all resolved singularities simultaneously, (self-)intersection numbers and integrated Chern classes can be determined for any triangulation configuration. Using this method the consistency conditions of line bundle models and the resulting chiral spectra can be worked out for any choice of triangulation. Moreover, by superimposing the Bianchi identities for all triangulation options much simpler though stronger conditions are uncovered. When these are satisfied, flop--transitions between all different triangulations are admissible. Various methods are exemplified by a number of concrete models on resolutions of the T6/Z2xZ2 orbifold.

Spinor--Vector Duality (SVD) has been observed in worldsheet constructions of heterotic--string compactifications. Recently, its realisation in the effective field theory limit of string vacua in six and five dimensions has been investigated. The SVD has been used to construct a string model that allows for an extra family universal $U(1)$, with the standard $E_6$ embedding of its charges, to remain unbroken down to low scales. Anomaly cancellation of the extra $U(1)$ charges mandates the existence of additional matter states at the extra $U(1)$ breaking scale, which affects precision measurements of Standard Model parameters. I discuss the construction of non-supersymmetric sting vacua and ``modular maps'' akin to the spacetime supersymmetry map. Such ``modular maps'' provide a glimpse into the enormous symmetry structure underlying the entire space of perturbative string vacua that is yet to be uncovered.

Imprints of spinor-vector dualities have been uncovered in various string constructions. They are typically induced by changing certain free general GSO phases in the underlying string partition functions. This paper shows that spinor-vector dualities in six dimensions are constrained by a fundamental effective field theory consistency condition, namely that any six dimensional low energy theory must be free of irreducible SO(2N) anomalies. Aspects of spinor-vector dualities are analysed in four six-dimensional free fermionic models which are distinguished by two generalised GSO phases. In addition, the constraint on the number of spinors and vectors is confirmed on generic spectra which may occur in K3 line bundle compactifications of the heterotic E8xE8 string.

Spinor-vector dualities have been established in various exact string realisations like orbifold and free fermionic constructions. This paper aims to investigate possibility of having spinor-vector dualities on smooth geometries in the context of the heterotic string. As a concrete working example the resolution of the T4/Z2 orbifold is considered with an additional circle supporting a Wilson line, for which it is known that the underlying orbifold theory exhibits such a duality by switching on/off a generalised discrete torsion phase between the orbifold twist and the Wilson line. Depending on this phase complementary parts of the twisted sector orbifold states are projected out, so that different blowup modes are available to generate the resolutions. As a consequence, not only the spectra of the dual pairs are different, but also the gauge groups are not identical making this duality less apparent on the blowup and thus presumably on smooth geometries in general.

We apply Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) and Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solvers in the context of finding chiral heterotic string models with positive cosmological constant from $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifolds. The power of using SAT/SMT solvers to sift large parameter spaces quickly to decide satisfiability, both to declare and prove unsatisfiability and to declare satisfiability, are demonstrated in this setting. These models are partly chosen to be small enough to plot the performance against exhaustive search, which takes around 2 hours 20 minutes to comb through the parameter space. We show that making use of SMT based techniques with integer encoding is rather simple and effective, while a more careful Boolean SAT encoding provides a significant speed-up -- determining satisfiability or unsatisfiability has, in our experiments varied between 0.03 and 0.06 seconds, while determining all models (where models exist) took 19 seconds for a constraint system that allows for 2048 models and 8.4 seconds for a constraint system that admits 640 models. We thus gain several orders of magnitude in speed, and this advantage is set to grow with a growing parameter space. This holds the promise that the method scales well beyond the initial problem we have used it for in this paper.

The first correspond to compactifications of a tachyonic ten--dimensional vacuum, whereas the second correspond to compactifications of the ten--dimensional tachyon--free $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic string. In both cases we develop a systematic method to extract tachyon--free four--dimensional models. We show that tachyon--free configurations arise with probability $\sim0.002$ and $\sim0.01$ in the first and second case, respectively. We adapt the `fertility methodology' that facilitates the extraction of phenomenological models. We show that Pati--Salam $\tilde S$--models do not contain heavy Higgs scalar representations that are required to break the PS symmetry to the Standard Model and are therefore not phenomenologically viable. Hence, we argue that in $\tilde S$--models the $SO(10)$ GUT symmetry must be broken at the string scale to the Standard--like Model subgroup. We extract tachyon--free three generation models in both cases that contain an equal number of massless bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom, ${\it i.e.}$ with $a_{00}=N_b^0-N_f^0=0$, and analyse their one--loop partition function.

The $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic string orbifold yielded a large space of phenomenological three generation models and serves as a testing ground to explore how the Standard Model of particle physics may be incorporated in a theory of quantum gravity. In this paper we explore the existence of type 0 models in this class of string compactifications. We demonstrate the existence of type 0 $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic string orbifolds, and show that there exist a large degree of redundancy in the space of GGSO projection coefficients when the type 0 restrictions are implemented. We explore the existence of such configurations in several constructions. The first correspond to essentially a unique configuration out of a priori $2^{21}$ discrete GGSO choices. We demonstrate this uniqueness analytically, as well as by the corresponding analysis of the partition function. A wider classification is performed in $\tilde S$--models and $S$--models, where the first class correspond to compactifications of a tachyonic ten dimensional heterotic string vacuum, whereas the second correspond to compactifications of the ten dimensional non--tachyonic $SO(16)\times SO(16)$. We show that the type 0 models in both cases contain physical tachyons at the free fermionic point in the moduli space. These vacua are therefore necessarily unstable, but may be instrumental in exploring the string dynamics in cosmological scenarios. we analyse the properties of the string one--loop amplitude. Naturally, these are divergent due to the existence of tachyonic states. We show that once the tachyonic states are removed by hand the amplitudes are finite and exhibit a form of misaligned supersymmetry.

The geometrical formulation of the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi theory shows that the quantum potential is never trivial, so that it plays the rôle of intrinsic energy. Such a key property selects the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) quantum potential $Q[g_{jk}]$ as the natural candidate for the dark energy. This leads to the WDW Hamilton-Jacobi equation with a vanishing kinetic term, and with the identification $$ Λ=-\frac{κ^2}{\sqrt{\bar g}}Q[g_{jk}] \ . $$ This shows that the cosmological constant is a quantum correction of the Einstein tensor, reminiscent of the von Weizsäcker correction to the kinetic term of the Thomas-Fermi theory. The quantum potential also defines the Madelung pressure tensor. The geometrical origin of the vacuum energy density, a strictly non-perturbative phenomenon, provides strong evidence that it is due to a graviton condensate. Time independence of the regularized WDW equation suggests that the ratio between the Planck length and the Hubble radius may be a time constant, providing an infrared/ultraviolet duality. We speculate that such a duality is related to the local to global geometry theorems for constant curvatures, showing that understanding the universe geometry is crucial for a formulation of Quantum Gravity.

Recently it was proposed that ten-dimensional tachyonic string vacua may serve as starting points for the construction of viable four dimensional phenomenological string models which are tachyon free. This is achieved by projecting out the tachyons in the four-dimensional models using projectors other than the projector which is utilised in the supersymmetric models and those of the $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic string. We continue the exploration of this class of models by develo** systematic computerised tools for their classification, the analysis of their tachyonic and massless spectra, as well as analysis of their partition functions and vacuum energy. We explore a randomly generated space of $2\times10^9$ string vacua in this class and find that tachyon--free models occur with $\sim 5\times 10^{-3}$ probability, and of those, phenomenologically inclined $SO(10)$ vacua with $a_{00}=N_b^0-N_f^0=0$, i.e. equal number of fermionic and bosonic massless states, occur with frequency $\sim 2\times 10^{-6}$. Extracting larger numbers of phenomenological vacua therefore requires adaptation of fertility conditions that we discuss, and significantly increase the frequency of tachyon--free models. Our results suggest that spacetime supersymmetry may not be a necessary ingredient in phenomenological string models, even at the Planck scale.

String theory is the leading contemporary framework to explore the synthesis of quantum mechanics with gravity. String phenomenology aims to study string theory while maintaining contact with observational data. The fermionic $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold provides a case study that yielded a rich space of phenomenological models. String theory in ten dimensions gives rise to non--supersymmetric tachyonic vacua that may serve as good starting points for the construction of phenomenologically viable models. I discuss an example of such a three generation standard--like model in which all the moduli, aside from the dilaton, are frozen. The Möbius symmetry may turn out to play a central role in the synthesis of quantum mechanics and gravity. In a local version it plays a central role in string theory. In a global version it underlies the Equivalence Postulate of Quantum Mechanics (EPOQM) formalism, which implies that spatial space is compact. It was recently proposed that evidence that the universe is closed exists in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation \cite{DiVMS}.

Classification of Left-Right Symmetric (LRS) heterotic-string vacua in the free fermionic formulation, using random generation of generalised GSO (GGSO) projection coefficients, produced phenomenologically viable models with probability $4\times 10^{-11}$. Extracting substantial number of phenomenologically viable models requires modification of the classification method. This is achieved by identifying phenomenologically amenable conditions on the Generalised GSO projection coefficients that are randomly generated at the $SO(10)$ level. Around each of these fertile cores we perform a complete LRS classification, generating viable models with probabilility $1.4\times 10^{-2}$, hence increasing the probability of generating phenomenologically viable models by nine orders of magnitude, and producing some $1.4\times 10^5$ such models. In the process we identify a doublet-triplet selection mechanism that operates in twisted sectors of the string models that break the $SO(10)$ symmetry to the Pati-Salam subgroup. This mechanism therefore operates as well in free fermionic models with Pati-Salam and Standard-like Model $SO(10)$ subgroups.

Such phenomenologically viable models enlarge the space of possible string solutions, and may offer novel insight into some of the outstanding problems in string phenomenology. In this paper we present a three generation standard--like model that may be regarded as a compactification of a ten dimensional tachyonic vacuum. We discuss the features of the model as compared to a similar model that may be regarded as compactification of the ten dimensional $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic-string. We further argue that in the four dimensional model all the geometrical moduli are fixed perturbatively, whereas the dilaton may be fixed by hidden sector non--perturbative effects.

A tachyon free six generation Standard--like Model is presented, which can be regarded as an orbifold of the $SO(16)\times E_8$ heterotic--string in ten dimensions. I propose that any $(2,0)$ heterotic--string in four dimensions can be connected to a $(2,2)$ one via an orbifold or by interpolations and provide some evidence for this conjecture. It suggests that any Effective Field Theory (EFT) model that cannot be connected to a $(2,2)$ theory is necessarily in the swampland, and will simplify the analysis of the moduli spaces of $(2,0)$ string compactifications.

Systematic classification of Z2xZ2 orbifold compactifications of the heterotic-string was pursued by using its free fermion formulation. The method entails random generation of string vacua and analysis of their entire spectra, and led to discovery of spinor-vector duality and three generation exophobic string vacua. The classification was performed for string vacua with unbroken SO(10) GUT symmetry, and progressively extended to models in which the SO(10) symmetry is broken to the SO(6)xSO(4), SU(5)xU(1), SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)^2 and SU(3)xU(1)xSU(2)^2 subgroups. Obtaining sizeable number of phenomenologically viable vacua in the last two cases requires identification of fertility conditions. Adaptation of machine learning tools to identify the fertility conditions will be useful when the frequency of viable models becomes exceedingly small in the total space of vacua.

The classification method of the free fermionic heterotic string vacua is extended to models where the $SO(10)$ GUT symmetry is broken directly at the string scale to the Left-Right Symmetric subgroup. Our method involves using a fixed set of basis vectors which are defined by the boundary conditions assigned to the free fermions before enumerating the string vacua by varying the Generalised GSO (GGSO) projection coefficients. It allows the derivation of algebraic expressions for the GGSO projections for each sector that generates massless states in the models. This enables a computerised analysis of the entire massless spectrum of a given choice of GGSO projection coefficients. The total number of vacua in the class of models chosen is $2^{66}\approx 7.38 \times 10^{19}$. A statistical sampling is performed and a sample size of $10^{11}$ vacua with the Left-Right Symmetric gauge group is extracted. We present the results of the classification, noting that contrary to the previous classification of Pati-Salam models, no three generation exophobic models were found. The results obtained demonstrate the existence of three generation models with the necessary Higgs representations needed for viable spontaneous symmetry breaking, and with a leading top quark Yukawa coupling.

We extend the free fermionic classification methodology to the class of standard-like heterotic-string vacua, in which the $SO(10)$ GUT symmetry is broken at the string level to $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)^2$. The space of GGSO free phase configurations in this case is vastly enlarged compared to the corresponding $SO(6)\times SO(4)$ and $SU(5)\times U(1)$ vacua. Extracting substantial numbers of phenomenologically viable models therefore requires a modification of the classification methods. This is achieved by identifying conditions on the GGSO projection coefficients, which are satisfied at the $SO(10)$ level by random phase configurations, and that lead to three generation models with the $SO(10)$ symmetry broken to the $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)^2$ subgroup. Around each of these fertile $SO(10)$ configurations, we perform a complete classification of standard-like models, by adding the $SO(10)$ symmetry breaking basis vectors, and scanning all the associated GGSO phases. Following this methodology we are able to generate some $10^7$ three generation Standard-like Models. We present the results of the classification and one exemplary model with distinct phenomenological properties, compared to previous SLM constructions.

The dark matter issue is among the most perplexing in contemporary physics. The problem is more enigmatic due to the wide range of possible solutions, ranging from the ultra-light to the super-massive. String theory gives rise to plausible dark matter candidates due to the breaking of the non--Abelian Grand Unified Theory (GUT) symmetries by Wilson lines. The physical spectrum then contains states that do not satisfy the quantisation conditions of the unbroken GUT symmetry. Given that the Standard Model states are identified with broken GUT representations, and provided that any ensuing symmetry breaking is induced by components of GUT states, leaves a remnant discrete symmetry that forbid the decay of the Wilsonian states. A class of such states are obtained in a heterotic-string derived $Z^\prime$ model. The model exploits the spinor-vector duality symmetry, observed in the fermionic $Z_2\times Z_2$ heterotic-string orbifolds, to generate a $Z^\prime\in E_6$ symmetry that may remain unbroken down to low energies. The $E_6$ symmetry is broken at the string level with discrete Wilson lines. The Wilsonian dark matter candidates in the string derived model are $SO(10)$, and hence Standard Model, singlets and possess non-$E_6$ $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ charges. Depending on the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ breaking scale and the reheating temperature they give rise to different scenarios for the relic abundance, and in accordance with the cosmological constraints.

The spinor-vector duality was discovered in free fermionic constructions of the heterotic-string in four dimensions. It played a key role in the construction of heterotic-string models with an anomaly free extra $Z^\prime$ symmetry that may remain unbroken down to low energy scales. A generic signature of the low scale string derived $Z^\prime$ model is via di-photon excess that may be within reach of the LHC. A fascinating possibility is that the spinor-vector duality symmetry is rooted in the structure of the heterotic-string compactifications to two dimensions. The two dimensional heterotic-string theories are in turn related to the so-called moonshine symmetries that underlie the two dimensional compactifications. In this paper we embark on exploration of this connection by the free fermionic formulation to classify the symmetries of the two dimensional heterotic-string theories. We use two complementary approaches in our classification. The first utilises a construction which is akin to the one used in the spinor-vector duality. Underlying this method is the triality property of $SO(8)$ representations. In the second approach we use the free fermionic tools to classify the twenty four dimensional Niemeier lattices.

The characteristics of the required spectrum are well motivated in heterotic-string constructions that allow for a light $Z^\prime$. Anomaly cancellation of the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ symmetry requires the existence of the Standard Model singlet and vector-like states in the vicinity of the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ breaking scale. In this paper we show that the agreement with the gauge coupling data at one-loop is identical to the case of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, owing to cancellations between the additional states. We further show that effects arising from heavy thresholds may push the supersymmetric spectrum beyond the reach of the LHC, while maintaining the agreement with the gauge coupling data. We show that the string inspired model can indeed account for the observed signal and discuss the feasibility of obtaining viable scalar mass spectrum.

Additional vector-like states in the string Z' model are instrumental to explain the relatively large width of the di-photon events and mandated by anomaly cancellation to be in the vicinity of the Z' breaking scale. Wilson line breaking of the non-Abelian gauge symmetries in the string models naturally gives rise to dark matter candidates. Future collider experiments will discriminate between the high-scale heterotic-string models, which preserve the perturbative unification paradigm indicated by the Standard Model data, versus the low scale string models. We also discuss the possibility for the production of the di-photon events with high scale $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ breaking.

We discuss the construction of heterotic--string models that allow for the existence of an extra $Z^\prime$ at low scales. One of the main difficulties encountered is that the desired symmetries tend to be anomalous in the prevailing three generation constructions. The reason is that these models utilise the symmetry breaking pattern $E_6\rightarrow SO(10)\times U(1)_ζ$ by GGSO projections. Consequently, $U(1)_ζ$ becomes anomalous. The spinor--vector duality that was observed in the fermionic $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactifications is used to construct a phenomenological three generation Pati--Salam heterotic--string model in which $U(1)_ζ$ is anomaly free and therefore can be a component of a low scale $Z^\prime$. The model implies existence of matter states at the $Z^\prime$ breaking scale, which are required for anomaly cancelation. Moreover, the string model gives rise to exotic states, which are $SO(10)$ singlets but carry exotic $U(1)_ζ$ charges. These states arise due to the breaking of $E_6$ by discrete Wilson lines and provide natural dark matter candidates. Initial indications suggest that the existence of additional gauge symmetries at the TeV scale may be confirmed in run II of the LHC experiment.

The heterotic--string models in the free fermionic formulation gave rise to some of the most realistic string models to date, which possess N=1 spacetime supersymmetry. Lack of evidence for supersymmetry at the LHC instigated recent interest in non-supersymmetric heterotic-string vacua. We explore what may be learned in this context from the quasi--realistic free fermionic models. We show that constructions with a low number of families give rise to proliferation of a priori tachyon producing sectors, compared to the non--realistic examples, which typically may contain only one such sector. The reason being that in the realistic cases the internal six dimensional space is fragmented into smaller units. We present one example of a quasi--realistic, non--supersymmetric, non--tachyonic, heterotic--string vacuum and compare the structure of its massless spectrum to the corresponding supersymmetric vacuum. While in some sectors supersymmetry is broken explicitly, i.e. the bosonic and fermionic sectors produce massless and massive states, other sectors, and in particular those leading to the chiral families, continue to exhibit fermi-bose degeneracy. In these sectors the massless spectrum, as compared to the supersymmetric cases, will only differ in some local or global U(1) charges. We discuss the conditions for obtaining $n_b=n_f$ at the massless level in these models. Our example model contains an anomalous U(1) symmetry, which generates a tadpole diagram at one loop-order in string perturbation theory. We speculate that this tadpole diagram may cancel the corresponding diagram generated by the one-loop non-vanishing vacuum energy and that in this respect the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua should be regarded on equal footing. Finally we discuss vacua that contain two supersymmetry generating sectors.

In this paper we aim to provide a pedagogical presentation of the proof of the Möbius symmetry underlying the cocycle condition. The Möbius symmetry implies energy quantization and undefinability of quantum trajectories, without assigning any prior interpretation to the wave function. As such, the Hamilton--Jacobi formalism, augmented with the global Möbius symmetry, provides an alternative starting point, to the axiomatic probability interpretation of the wave function, for the formulation of quantum mechanics and the quantum spacetime. The Möbius symmetry can only be implemented consistently if spatial space is compact, and correspondingly if there exist a finite ultraviolet length scale. The equivalence postulate approach to quantum mechanics aims to formulate quantum mechanics from a fundamental geometrical principle. Underlying the formulation there exists a basic cocycle condition which is invariant under $D$--dimensional Möbius transformations with respect to the Euclidean or Minkowski metrics. The invariance under global Möbius transformations implies that spatial space is compact. Furthermore, it implies energy quantisation and undefinability of quantum trajectories without assuming any prior interpretation of the wave function. The approach may be viewed as conventional quantum mechanics with the caveat that spatial space is compact, as dictated by the Möbius symmetry, with the classical limit corresponding to the decompactification limit. Correspondingly, there exists a finite length scale in the formalism and consequently an intrinsic regularisation scheme. Evidence for the compactness of space may exist in the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Surprisingly, however, the construction of heterotic--string derived models that allow for an extra Z' to remain unbroken down to low scales has proven to be very difficult. The main reason being that the U(1) symmetries that are typically discussed in the literature are either anomalous or have to be broken at a high scale to generate light neutrino masses. In this paper we use for that purpose the self duality property under the spinor vector duality, which was discovered in free fermionic heterotic-string models. The chiral massless states in the self--dual models fill complete 27 representations of E6. The anomaly free gauge symmetry in the effective low energy field theory of our string model is $SU(4)_C\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_ζ$, where $U(1)_ζ$ is the family universal $U(1)$ symmetry that descends from E6, and is typically anomalous in other free fermionic heterotic-string models. Our model therefore allows for the existence of a low scale Z', which is a combination of $B-L$, $T_{3_L}$ and $T_{3_R}$. The string model is free of exotic fractionally charged states in the massless spectrum. It contains exotic SO(10) singlet states that carry fractional, non--E6 charge, with respect to $U(1)_ζ$. These non-E6 states arise in the string model due to the breaking of the E6 symmetry by discrete Wilson lines. They represent a distinct signature of the string vacua and cannot arise in E6 Grand Unified Theories. They may provide viable dark matter candidates.

The free fermionic construction of the heterotic string in four dimensions produced a large space of three generation models with the underlying $SO(10)$ embedding of the Standard Model states. The $SO(10)$ symmetry is broken to a subgroup directly at the string scale. Over the past few years free fermionic models with the Pati-Salam and flipped $SU(5)$ subgroups have been classified. In this paper we extend this classification program to models in which the $SO(10)$ symmetry is broken at the string level to the $SU(4)\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_R$ (SU421) subgroup. The subspace of free fermionic models that we consider corresponds to symmetric ${\mathbb{Z}}_2 \times {\mathbb{Z}}_2$ orbifolds. We provide a general argument that shows that this class of SU421 free fermionic models cannot produce viable three generation models.

We study heterotic ground states in which supersymmetry is broken by coupling the momentum and winding charges of two large extra dimensions to the R-charges of the supersymmetry generators. The large dimensions give rise to towers of heavy string thresholds that contribute to the running of the gauge couplings. In the general case, these contributions are proportional to the volume of the two large dimensions and invalidate the perturbative string expansion. The problem is evaded if the susy breaking sectors arise as a spontaneously broken phase of N=4 -> N=2 -> N=0 supersymmetry, provided that N=4 supersymmetry is restored on the boundary of the moduli space. We discuss the mechanism in the case of Z_2 x Z_2 orbifolds, which requires that the twisted sector that contains the large extra dimensions has no fixed points. We analyse the full string partition function and show that the twisted sectors distribute themselves in non-aligned N=2 orbits, hence preserving the solution to the string decompactification problem. Remarkably, we find that the contribution to the vacuum energy from the N=2 -> N=0 sectors is suppressed, and the only substantial contribution arises from the breaking of the N=4 sector to N=0.

The observation of a scalar resonance at the LHC, compatible with perturbative electroweak symmetry breaking, reinforces the Standard Model parameterisation of all subatomic data. The logarithmic evolution of the SM gauge and matter parameters suggests that this parameterisation remains viable up to the Planck scale, where gravitational effects are of comparable strength. String theory provides a perturbatively consistent scheme to explore how the parameters of the Standard Model may be determined from a theory of quantum gravity. The free fermionic heterotic string models provide concrete examples of exact string solutions that reproduce the spectrum of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Contemporary studies entail the development of methods to classify large classes of models. This led to the discovery of exophobic heterotic-string vacua and the observation of spinor-vector duality, which provides an insight to the global structure of the space of (2,0) heterotic-string vacua. Future directions entail the study of the role of the massive string states in these models and their incorporation in cosmological scenarios. A complementary direction is the formulation of quantum gravity from the principle of manifest phase space duality and the equivalence postulate of quantum mechanics, which suggest that space is compact. The compactness of space, which implies intrinsic regularisation, may be tightly related to the intrinsic finite length scale, implied by string phenomenology.

We extend the classification of the free fermionic heterotic-string vacua to models in which the SO(10) GUT symmetry at the string scale is broken to the flipped SU(5) subgroup. In our classification method, the set of basis vectors defined by the boundary conditions which are assigned to the free fermions is fixed and the enumeration of the string vacua is obtained in terms of the Generalised GSO (GGSO) projection coefficients entering the one-loop partition function. We derive algebraic expressions for the GGSO projections for all the physical states appearing in the sectors generated by the set of basis vectors. This enables the analysis of the entire string spectrum to be programmed in to a computer code therefore, we performed a statistical sampling in the space of 2^{44} (approximately 10^{13}) flipped $SU(5)$ vacua and scanned up to 10^{12} GGSO configurations. For that purpose, two independent codes were developed based on JAVA and FORTRAN95. All the results presented here are confirmed by the two independent routines. Contrary to the corresponding Pati-Salam classification, we do not find exophobic flipped SU(5) vacua with an odd number of generations. We study the structure of exotic states appearing in the three generation models that additionally contain a viable Higgs spectrum. Moreover, we demonstrate the existence of models in which all the exotic states are confined by a hidden sector non-Abelian gauge symmetry as well as models that may admit the racetrack mechanism.

The space of $(2,0)$ models is of particular interest among all heterotic-string models because it includes the models with the minimal $SO(10)$ unification structure, which is well motivated by the Standard Model of particle physics data. The fermionic $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic-string models revealed the existence of a new symmetry in the space of string configurations under the exchange of spinors and vectors of the $SO(10)$ GUT group, dubbed spinor-vector duality. Such symmetries are important for the understanding of the landscape of string vacua and ultimately for the possible operation of a dynamical vacuum selection mechanism in string theory. In this paper we generalize this idea to arbitrary internal rational Conformal Field Theories (RCFTs). We explain how the spectral flow operator normally acting within a general $(2,2)$ theory can be used as a map between $(2,0)$ models. We describe the details, give an example and propose more simple currents that can be used in a similar way.

The discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC supports the hypothesis that the Standard Model provides an effective parameterisation of all subatomic experimental data up to the Planck scale. String theory, which provides a viable perturbative approach to quantum gravity, requires for its consistency the existence of additional gauge symmetries beyond the Standard Model. The construction of heterotic--string models with a viable light $Z^\prime$ is, however, highly constrained. We outline the construction of standard--like heterotic--string models that allow for an additional Abelian gauge symmetry that may remain unbroken down to low scales. We present a string inspired model, consistent with the string constraints.

The equivalence postulate approach to quantum mechanics entails a derivation of quantum mechanics from a fundamental geometrical principle. Underlying the formalism there exists a basic cocycle condition, which is invariant under D-dimensional finite Mobius transformations. The invariance of the cocycle condition under finite Mobius transformations implies that space is compact. Additionally, it implies energy quantisation and the undefinability of quantum trajectories. I argue that the decompactification limit coincides with the classical limit. Evidence for the compactness of the universe may exist in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation.

We explore the phenomenological viability of a light Z' in heterotic-string models, whose existence has been motivated by proton stability arguments. A class of quasi-realistic string models that produce such a viable Z' are the Left-Right Symmetric (LRS) heterotic-string models in the free fermionic formulation. A key feature of these models is that the matter charges under U(1)_Z' do not admit an E6 embedding. The light Z' in the LRS heterotic-string models forbids baryon number violating operators, while allowing lepton number violating operators, hence suppressing proton decay yet allowing for sufficiently small neutrino masses via a seesaw mechanism. We show that the constraints imposed by the gauge coupling data and heterotic-string coupling unification nullify the viability of a light Z' in these models. We further argue that agreement with the gauge coupling data necessitates that the U(1)_Z' charges admit an E6 embedding. We discuss how viable string models with this property may be constructed.

We show that if space is compact, then trajectories cannot be defined in the framework of quantum Hamilton--Jacobi equation. The starting point is the simple observation that when the energy is quantized it is not possible to make variations with respect to the energy, and the time parameterisation t-t_0=\partial_E S_0, implied by Jacobi's theorem and that leads to group velocity, is ill defined. It should be stressed that this follows directly form the quantum HJ equation without any axiomatic assumption concerning the standard formulation of quantum mechanics. This provides a stringent connection between the quantum HJ equation and the Copenhagen interpretation. Together with tunneling and the energy quantization theorem for confining potentials, formulated in the framework of quantum HJ equation, it leads to the main features of the axioms of quantum mechanics from a unique geometrical principle. Similarly to the case of the classical HJ equation, this fixes its quantum analog by requiring that there exist point transformations, rather than canonical ones, leading to the trivial hamiltonian. This is equivalent to a basic cocycle condition on the states. Such a cocycle condition can be implemented on compact spaces, so that continuous energy spectra are allowed only as a limiting case. Remarkably, a compact space would also imply that the Dirac and von Neumann formulations of quantum mechanics essentially coincide. We suggest that there is a definition of time parameterisation leading to trajectories in the context of the quantum HJ equation having the probabilistic interpretation of the Copenhagen School.
