Abstract:
The intermediate valence (IV) compound YbAl$_3$ exhibits nonintegral valence (Yb 4$f^{14-n_f}$ (5d6s)$^z$ where z = 2+n$_f$ = 2.75) in a moderately heavy (m* = 20-30me) ground state with a large Kondo temperature (T$_K$ ~ 500-600K). We have measured the magnetic fluctuations and the phonon spectra on single crystals of this material by time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). We find that at low temperature, the Kondo-scale spin fluctuations have a momentum (Q) dependence similar to that seen recently in the IV compound CePd$_3$ and which can be attributed to particle-hole excitations in a coherent itinerant 4$f$ correlated ground state. The Q-dependence disappears as the temperature is raised towards room temperature and the 4$f$ electron band states become increasingly incoherent. The measured phonons can be described adequately by a calculation based on standard DFT+$U$ density functional theory, without recourse to considering 4$f$ correlations dynamically. A low temperature magnetic peak observed in the neutron scattering at ~ 30meV shows dispersion identical to an optic phonon branch. This 4$f$/phonon resonance disappears for T > 150K. The phonons appear to remain unaffected by the resonance. We discuss several possibilities for the origin of this unusual excitation, including the idea that it arises from the large amplitude beating of the light Al atoms against the heavy Yb atoms, resulting in a dynamic 4$f$/3$p$ hybridization.

We have studied the physical properties of Nd$_2$O$_3$ with neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, heat capacity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Nd$_2$O$_3$ crystallizes in a trigonal structure, with Nd$^{3+}$ ions surrounded by cages of 7 oxygen anions. The crystal field spectrum consists of four excitations spanning the energy range 3-60 meV. The refined eigenfunctions indicate XY-spins in the $ab$ plane. The Curie-Weiss temperature of $θ_{CW}=-23.7(1)$ K was determined from magnetic susceptibility measurements. Heat capacity measurements show a sharp peak at 550 mK and a broader feature centered near 1.5 K. Neutron diffraction measurements show that the 550 mK transition corresponds to long-range anti-ferromagnetic order implying a frustration index of $θ_{CW}/T_N\approx43$. These results indicate that Nd$_2$O$_3$ is a structurally and chemically simple model system for frustration caused by competing interactions with moments with predominate XY anisotropy.

We report a detailed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study of the skyrmion lattice phase of MnSi under compressive and tensile strain. In particular, we demonstrate that tensile strain applied in the skyrmion lattice plane, perpendicular to the magnetic field, acts to destabilize the skyrmion lattice phase. This experiment was enabled by our development of a versatile strain cell, unique in its ability to select the application of either tensile or compressive strain in-situ by using two independent helium-actuated copper pressure transducers, whose design has been optimized for magnetic SANS on modulated long-period magnetic structures and vortex lattices, and is compact enough to fit in common sample environments, such as cryostats and superconducting magnets.

Intermediate valence compounds containing rare earth or actinide ions are archetypal systems for the investigation of strong electron correlations. Their effective electron masses of 10 to 50 times the free electron mass result from a hybridization of the highly localized $f$-electrons with the more itinerant $d$-electrons, which is strong enough that their properties are dominated by on-site electron correlations. To a remarkable degree, this can be modeled by the Anderson Impurity Model, even though the $f$-electrons are situated on a periodic lattice. However, in recent years, there has been increasing evidence that the dynamic magnetic susceptibility of intermediate valence compounds is not purely local, but shows variations across the Brillouin zone that have been ascribed to $f$-band coherence. So far, this has been based on simplified qualitative models. In this article, we present a quantitative comparison of inelastic neutron scattering from a single crystal of CePd$_3$, measured in four-dimensional (Q,$ω$)-space, with ab initio calculations, which are in excellent agreement on an absolute scale. Our results establish that the Q-dependence of the scattering is caused by particle-hole excitations within $f$-$d$ hybridized bands that grow in coherence with decreasing temperature.

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a single crystal of the intermediate valence compound CePd3. At 300 K the magnetic scattering is quasielastic, with halfwidth of 23 meV, and is independent of momentum transfer Q. At low temperature, the Q-averaged magnetic spectrum is inelastic, exhibiting a broad peak centered near Emax = 55 meV. These results, together with the temperature dependence of the susceptibility, 4f occupation number, and specific heat, can be fit by the Kondo/Anderson impurity model. The low temperature scattering near Emax, however, shows significant variations with Q, reflecting the coherence of the 4f lattice. The intensity is maximal at (1/2, 1/2,0), intermediate at (1/2,0,0) and (0,0,0), and weak at (1/2,1/2,1/2). We discuss this Q-dependence in terms of current ideas about coherence in heavy fermion systems.

The Kondo temperature deduced from the quasielastic linewidth is 17 K for Ce$_3$In and 40 K for Ce$_3$Sn. The low temperature behavior of the specific heat, magnetization, and susceptibility can not be well-described by J=1/2 Kondo physics alone, but require calculations that include contributions from the Kondo effect, broadened crystal fields, and ferromagnetic correlations, all of which are known to be important in these compounds. We find that in Ce$_3$In the ferromagnetic fluctuation makes a 10-15 % contribution to the ground state doublet entropy and magnetization. The large specific heat coefficient $γ$ in this heavy fermion system thus arises more from the ferromagnetic correlations than from the Kondo behavior.

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a CePd3 single crystal show a magnetic response at 300 K that is independent of momentum transfer with a Lorentzian quasielastic energy spectrum with a half width of 23 meV. This is in agreement with the Anderson impurity model (AIM), that predicts local moment relaxational behavior in this temperature regime. The 7 K magnetic response has an inelastic Lorentzian spectrum, with characteristic energy of 53 meV and half width 32 meV at the (h, 1/2, 0) zone boundary. Such an inelastic spectrum is expected for the AIM at low temperature. Unlike the Q-independence of the impurity model, a variation of intensity with momentum transfer, including intensity maxima at the zone boundary, is observed in the data. However, this variation is only of order 20 percent, which is much smaller than that predicted by the Anderson lattice model (ALM). The large shifts in spectral weight expected for the ALM as Q varies from zone boundary to zone center are not observed in the experimental spectra.
