Year 1 results of the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will provide tighter constraints on small-scale cosmology, beyond the validity of linear perturbation theory. This heightens the demand for a computationally affordable prescription that can accurately capture nonlinearities in beyond-$Λ$CDM models. The COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration (COLA) method, a cost-effective \textit{N}-body technique, has been proposed as a viable alternative to high-resolution \textit{N}-body simulations for training emulators of the nonlinear matter power spectrum. In this study, we evaluate this approach by employing COLA emulators to conduct a cosmic shear analysis with LSST-Y1 simulated data across three different nonlinear scale cuts. We use the $w$CDM model, for which the \textsc{EuclidEmulator2} (\textsc{ee2}) exists as a benchmark, having been trained with high-resolution \textit{N}-body simulations. We primarily utilize COLA simulations with mass resolution $M_{\rm part}\approx 8 \times 10^{10} ~h^{-1} M_{\odot}$ and force resolution $\ell_{\rm force}=0.5 ~h^{-1}$Mpc, though we also test refined settings with $M_{\rm part}\approx 1 \times 10^{10} ~h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ and force resolution $\ell_{\rm force}=0.17 ~h^{-1}$Mpc. We find the performance of the COLA emulators is sensitive to the placement of high-resolution \textit{N}-body reference samples inside the prior, which only ensure agreement in their local vicinity. However, the COLA emulators pass stringent criteria in goodness-of-fit and parameter bias throughout the prior, when $Λ$CDM predictions of \textsc{ee2} are computed alongside every COLA emulator prediction, suggesting a promising approach for extended models.

Screening mechanisms are often deployed by dark energy models in order to conceal the effects of their new degrees of freedom from the scrutiny of terrestrial and solar system experiments. However, extreme properties of nuclear matter may lead to a partial failure of screening mechanisms inside the most massive neutron stars observed in Nature, opening up the possibility of probing these theories with neutron star observations. In this work we explore equilibrium and stability properties of neutron stars in two variants of the symmetron model. We show that around sufficiently compact neutron stars, the symmetron is amplified with respect to its background, cosmological value by several orders of magnitude, and that properties of such unscreened stars are sensitive to corrections to the leading linear coupling between the symmetron and matter.

In particular, we consider the Born-Infeld electrodynamics coupled to gravity as described by General Relativity. Following the steps that lead to these inequalities, we study the absorption of a charged test particle by the black hole and verify that the entropy bound is violated. We find a modified upper bound for the entropy that depends on the maximum field parameter of the Born-Infeld theory.

We devise a procedure to recover the curvaton model that provides the desired $f_{NL}$ parameter. We then present a concrete example of $f_{NL}$ and construct its parent model. We study the constraints applied to this model based on considerations taken on $f_{NL}$. We show that the hemispherical asymmetry can also be used to constrain the scale-dependence of $f_{NL}$ and the model parameters.

In this work we determine a lower bound to the mean value of the quantum potential for an arbitrary state. Furthermore, we derive a generalized uncertainty relation that is stronger than the Robertson-Schrödinger inequality and hence also stronger than the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. The mean value is then associated to the nonclassical part of the covariances of the momenta operator. This imposes a minimum bound for the nonclassical correlations of momenta and gives a physical characterization of the classical and semiclassical limits of quantum systems. The results obtained primarily for pure states are then generalized for density matrices describing mixed states.

Bekenstein's inequality sets a bound on the entropy of a charged macroscopic body. Such a bound is understood as a universal relation between physical quantities and fundamental constants of nature that should be valid for any physical system. We reanalyze the steps that lead to this entropy bound considering a charged object in conformity to Born-Infeld electrodynamics and show that the bound depends of the underlying theory used to describe the physical system. Our result shows that the nonlinear contribution to the electrostatic self-energy causes a raise in the entropy bound. As an intermediate step to obtain this result, we exhibit a general way to calculate the form of the electric field for a given nonlinear electrodynamics in Schwarzschild spacetime.

Within the effective field theory approach to cosmic acceleration, the background expansion can be specified separately from the gravitational modifications. We explore the impact of modified gravity in a background different from a cosmological constant plus cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) on the stability and cosmological observables, including covariance between gravity and expansion parameters. In No Slip Gravity the more general background allows more gravitational freedom, including both positive and negative Planck mass running. We examine the effects on cosmic structure growth, as well as showing that a viable positive integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect crosscorrelation easily arises from this modified gravity theory. Using current data we constrain parameters with a Monte Carlo analysis, finding a maximum running $|α_M|\lesssim 0.03$. We provide the modified {\tt hi\_class} code publicly on GitHub, now enabling computation and inclusion of the redshift space distortion observable $fσ_8$ as well as the No Slip Gravity modifications.

Our construction relies on Wands' duality, which shows that the Mukhanov-Sasaki equation has a symmetry transformation by changing appropriately its time-dependent mass term. One of the advantages of this constructive method is that one can control every contribution to the primordial power spectrum and check how far we can emulate a given primordial model with a different scenario. In particular, we show that map** the Starobinsky inflation into a quasi-matter bounce gives the correct relation between the scalar spectral index $n_s-1$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$.

We study the formation of classical singularities in Generalized Brans-Dicke theories that are natural extensions to Brans-Dicke where the kinetic term is modified by a new coupling function $ω(\varphi)$. We discuss the asymptotic limit $ω(\varphi)\rightarrow\infty$ and show that the system generically does not approach General Relativity. Given the arbitrariness of $ω(\varphi)$, one can search for coupling functions chosen specifically to avoid classical singularities. However, we prove that this is not the case. Homogeneous and spherically symmetric collapsing objects form singularities for arbitrary coupling functions. On the other hand, expanding cosmological scenarios are completely free of Big Rip type singularities. In an expanding universe, the scalar field behaves at most as stiff matter, which makes these cosmological solutions asymptotically approach General Relativity.

This theory modifies Maxwell's electrodynamics by eliminating the hypothesis of locality that assumes an accelerated observer simultaneously equivalent to a comoving inertial frame of reference. In this scenario, the transformation between an inertial and accelerated observer is generalized which affects the properties of physical fields. In particular, we analyze how an uniformly accelerated observer perceives a homogeneous and isotropic blackbody radiation. We show that all nonlocal effects are transient and most relevant in the first period of acceleration.

In addition, we address subtle issues in order to propagate the primordial BAO scale to present epoch. The combined analysis of BAO+SNIa offers a stringent test for these models. We use two distinct parameter estimation approaches, namely, the $χ^2$ and the complete likelihood functional. It has been argued that these two approaches are not equivalent and indeed our analysis shows a specific example of their departure.

The main goal of the present work is to analyze the cosmological scenario of the induced gravity theory developed in previous works. Such a theory consists on a Yang-Mills theory in a four-dimensional Euclidian spacetime with $SO(m,n)$ such that $m+n=5$ and $m\in\{0,1,2\}$ as its gauge group. This theory undergoes a dynamical gauge symmetry breaking via an Inönü-Wigner contraction in its infrared sector. As a consequence, the $SO(m,n)$ algebra is deformed into a Lorentz algebra with the emergency of the local Lorentz symmetries and the gauge fields being identified with a vierbein and a spin connection. As a result, gravity is described as an effective Einstein-Cartan-like theory with ultraviolet correction terms and a propagating torsion field. We show that the cosmological model associated with this effective theory has three different regimes. In particular, the high curvature regime presents a de Sitter phase which tends towards a $Λ$CDM model. We argue that $SO(m,n)$ induced gravities are promising effective theories to describe the early phase of the universe.

We consider a Bohmian approach to the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker model and investigate the question whether or not there are singularities, in the sense that the universe reaches zero volume. We find that for generic wave functions (i.e., non-classical wave functions), there is a non-zero probability for a trajectory to be non-singular. This should be contrasted to the consistent histories approach for which it was recently shown by Craig and Singh that there is always a singularity. This result illustrates that the question of singularities depends much on which version of quantum theory one adopts. This was already pointed out by Pinto-Neto et al., albeit with a different Bohmian approach. Our current Bohmian approach agrees with the consistent histories approach by Craig and Singh for single-time histories, unlike the one studied earlier by Pinto-Neto et al. Although the trajectories are usually different in the two Bohmian approach, their qualitative behavior is the same for generic wave functions.

In a previous work we obtained a set of necessary conditions for the linear approximation in cosmology. Here we discuss the relations of this approach with the so called covariant perturbations. It is often argued in the literature that one of the main advantages of the covariant approach to describe cosmological perturbations is that the Bardeen formalism is coordinate dependent. In this paper we will reformulate the Bardeen approach in a completely covariant manner. For that, we introduce the notion of pure and mixed tensors, which yields an adequate language to treat both perturbative approaches in a common framework. We then stress that in the referred covariant approach one necessarily introduces an additional hyper-surface choice to the problem. Using our mixed and pure tensors approach, we were able to construct a one-to-one map relating the usual gauge dependence of the Bardeen formalism with the hyper-surface dependence inherent to the covariant approach. Finally, through the use of this map, we define full non-linear tensors that at first order correspond to the three known gauge invariant variables $Φ$, $Ψ$ and $Ξ$, which are simultaneously foliation and gauge invariant. We then stress that the use of the proposed mixed tensors allows one to construct simultaneously gauge and hyper-surface invariant variables at any order.

We study the Wheeler-DeWitt quantum cosmology of a spatially flat Friedmann cosmological model with a massless free scalar field. We compare the consistent histories approach with the de Broglie-Bohm theory when applied to this simple model under two different quantization schemes: the Schrödinger-like quantization, which essentially takes the square-root of the resulting Klein-Gordon equation through the restriction to positive frequencies and their associated Newton-Wigner states, or the induced Klein-Gordon quantization, that allows both positive and negative frequencies together. We show that the consistent histories approach can give a precise answer to the question concerning the existence of a quantum bounce if and only if one takes the single frequency approach and within a single family of histories, namely, a family containing histories concerning properties of the quantum system at only two specific moments of time: the infinity past and the infinity future. In that case, as shown by Craig and Singh \cite{CS}, there is no quantum bounce. In any other situation, the question concerning the existence of a quantum bounce has no meaning in the consistent histories approach. On the contrary, we show that if one considers the de Broglie-Bohm theory, there are always states where quantum bounces occur in both quantization schemes. Hence the assertion that the Wheeler-DeWitt quantization does not solve the singularity problem in cosmology is not precise. To address this question, one must specify not only the quantum interpretation adopted but also the quantization scheme chosen.

In this paper we show that there exists a new symmetry in the relativistic wave equation for a scalar field in arbitrary dimensions. This symmetry is related to redefinitions of the metric tensor which implement a map between non-equivalent manifolds. It is possible to interpret these transformations as a generalization of the conformal transformations. In addition, one can show that this set of manifolds together with the transformation connecting its metrics forms a group. As long as the scalar field dynamics is invariant under these transformations, there immediately appears an ambiguity concerning the definition of the underlying background geometry.

We show that Maxwell's electromagnetism can be mapped into the Born-Infeld theory in a curved space-time, which depends only on the electromagnetic field in a specific way. This map is valid for any value of the two lorentz invariants $F$ and $G$ confirming that we have included all possible solutions of Maxwell's equations. Our result seems to show that specifying the dynamics and the space-time…

This map is valid for any value of the two lorentz invariants $F$ and $G$ confirming that we have included all possible solutions of Maxwell's equations. Our result seems to show that specifying the dynamics and the space-time structure of a given theory can be viewed merely as a choice of representation to describe the physical system.

Abstract:
We show that non-linear dynamics of a scalar field φ may be described as a mod- ification of the spacetime geometry. Thus, the self-interaction is interpreted as a coupling of the scalar field with an effective gravitational metric that is constructed with φ itself. We prove that this process is universal, that is, it is valid for arbi- trary Lagrangian. Our results are compared to usual analogue…

Our results are compared to usual analogue models of gravitation, where the emergence of a metric appears as a consequence of linear perturbation.

In this paper it is shown how to obtain the simplest equations for the Mukhanov-Sasaki variables describing quantum linear scalar perturbations in the case of scalar fields without potential term. This was done through the implementation of canonical transformations at the classical level, and unitary transformations at the quantum level, without ever using any classical background equation, and it completes the simplification initiated in investigations by Langlois \cite{langlois}, and Pinho and Pinto-Neto \cite{emanuel2} for this case. These equations were then used to calculate the spectrum index $n_s$ of quantum scalar perturbations of a non-singular inflationary quantum background model, which starts at infinity past from flat space-time with Planckian size spacelike hypersurfaces, and inflates due to a quantum cosmological effect, until it makes an analytical graceful exit from this inflationary epoch to a decelerated classical stiff matter expansion phase. The result is $n_s=3$, incompatible with observations.

Abstract:
We develop a theoretical framework that allows us to compare electromagnetism and gravitation in a fully covariant way. This new scenario does not rely on any kind of approximation nor associate objects with different operational meaning as it's sometime done in the literature. We develop a theoretical framework that allows us to compare electromagnetism and gravitation in a fully covariant way. This new scenario does not rely on any kind of approximation nor associate objects with different operational meaning as it's sometime done in the literature. We construct the electromagnetic analogue to the Riemann and Weyl tensors and develop the equations of motion for these objects. In particular, we are able to identify precisely how and in what conditions gravity can be mapped to electrodynamics. As a consequence, many of the gemometrical tools of General Relativity can be applied to Electromagnetism and vice-versa. We hope our results would shed new light in the nature of electromagnetic and gravitational theories.

We perform a detailed investigation of the simplest possible cosmological model in which a bounce can occur, namely that where the dynamics is led by a simple massive scalar field in a general self-interacting potential and a background spacetime with positively curved spatial sections. By means of a phase space analysis, we give the conditions under which an initially contracting phase can be followed by a bounce and an inflationary phase lasting long enough (i.e., at least 60-70 e-folds) to suppress spatial curvature in today's observable universe. We find that, quite generically, this realization requires some amount of fine-tuning of the initial conditions. We study the effect of this background evolution on scalar perturbations by propagating an initial power-law power spectrum through the contracting phase, the bounce and the inflationary phase. We find that it is drastically modified, both spectrally (k-mode mixing) and in amplitude. It also acquires, at leading order, an oscillatory component, which, once evolved through the radiation and matter dominated eras, happens to be compatible with the WMAP data.

A stiff matter-dominated universe modeled by a free massless scalar field minimally coupled to gravity in a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) geometry is quantized. Generalized complex-width gaussian superpositions of the solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation are constructed and the Bohm-de Broglie interpretation of quantum cosmology is applied. A planar dynamical system is found in which a diversity of quantum bohmian trajectories are obtained and discussed. One class of solutions represents non-singular inflationary models starting at infinity past from flat space-time with Planckian size spacelike hypersurfaces, which inflates without inflaton but due to a quantum cosmological effect, until it makes an analytical graceful exit from this inflationary epoch to a decelerated classical stiff matter expansion phase.

The causal interpretation of quantum mechanics is applied to a homogeneous and isotropic quantum universe, whose matter content is composed by non interacting dust and radiation. For wave functions which are eigenstates of the total dust mass operator, we find some bouncing quantum universes which reachs the classical limit for scale factors much larger than its minimum size. However these wave functions do not have unitary evolution. For wave functions which are not eigenstates of the dust total mass operator but do have unitary evolution, we show that, for flat spatial sections, matter can be created as a quantum effect in such a way that the universe can undergo a transition from an exotic matter dominated era to a matter dominated one.
